By now you may be aware that there is, once again, an active Youth Group at First. There is much more to know about them and their activities.

Our first Youth Group in many years has been reading through the Gospel of John together and learning to pray and sing together.

Given the diversity of our group, some of the kids have been doing some interesting things for the first time………

- first rodeo - first time skating - first time tobogganing - first s’mores over a camp fire - first experiences with house pets - first games: four on the couch, dutch blitz, spoons

This is a warm and welcoming group of young people. They have made our time together a safe and hospitable place to be. Let’s keep them in our prayers.

CBM Missionaries in Cameroon: Dan & Melody Grove work with Wycliffe Bible Translators in Cameroon. Prayer that they be an encouragement to their Cameroonian colleagues as they share in the work together. Praise God for the recording of Luke in the language of Bafanji!! Pray that it will soon be in the hands of the people there and that many will come to know Jesus. Pray that people (inside and out of the churches) will have a hunger for God's word, and for the growth of the literacy programs in each of the villages. Pray for the translators in each village, for unity among the teams, wisdom as they translate, and health and protection for them and their families.

o April - invite someone you know somewhat, but would like to know better

o May - invite someone you don’t know very well

o June - invite someone who is new to you

o Then carry this into summer months

o July - encouraged to invite someone new or a visitor; perhaps if you’ve been

the recipient of an invitation and are now ready to invite someone yourself,

with a partner/mentor to assist

o August - invite someone new or a visitor;

o September - invite a person under age 30 (welcome to students)

o October & November – MeetUps and small groups

BAPTIST WORLD ALLIANCE (BWA) NEWS The BWA is the largest organization of Baptists in the world. Our church is affiliated with BWA through our membership of Canadian Baptists of Western Canada, which in turn is part of Canadian Baptist Ministries. Here are some recent news items from BWA. The current President of the BWA is Rev. Neville Callum, from Jamaica.

From the BWA President: I continue to be intrigued by a report that emerged in the wake of the Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops of the Roman Catholic Church, October 4-25, 2015. The report alleges that…near the start of the synod, 13 cardinals…delivered a letter to Pope Francis expressing their concern….about "how the church going forward should interpret and apply the Word of God, her doctrines and her disciplines to changes in culture." The cardinals’ concern was informed by a certain reading of the experience of some churches outside the Catholic family. This is what they said: "The collapse of liberal Protestant churches in the modern era, accelerated by their abandonment of key elements of Christian belief and practice in the name of pastoral adaptation, warrants great caution in our own synodal discussions…." By what criteria does one evaluate whether “liberal Protestant churches” have collapsed? What key elements of Christian belief can these churches be said to have abandoned? Is it true that some churches have used pastoral adaptation as the basis for changing their fundamental beliefs? Whatever we make of the cardinals’ claims, it seems to me that the church needs to hear a stark warning in what they voice. Yet, we should not fail to recognize the complexity of the process by which we can hear the voice of God as we seek to relate the teaching of Scripture to the vexed issues of contemporary life. First, we should note that discerning the mind of Christ is not simply about a Christian taking the counsel that is given in the Bible and applying it directly to a particular issue of concern. One reason for this is that, in this individualistic world, discernment of the voice of Christ is best done in community with other Christians. God can speak to each of us in the privacy of our place of prayer. But we must test what we believe we are hearing against the wider sense of the believing community. Of course, this is a principle that was firmly advocated by the earliest Baptists and it has been affirmed in several other Christian World Communions….Another reason why discerning God’s mind is a complex process is that we do not come to the process of applying biblical teaching to issues of the day with a tabula rasa. Instead, we come to the issues with our minds flooded with all sorts of ideas. Serious Christians who apply biblical insights in the process of decision making may wish to admit that among the things they bring to the process of decision-making are the values formed in them in their early development at home, school and church. They also bring the traditions of

Page 11: Fourth SUNDAY OF LENT - First Baptist Church Reginafirstbaptistregina.ca/.../2016/03/fbcbulletin_2016Mar06.pdfencouraging to see how the hand of God has guided her, and how He continues

10

biblical interpretation and the body of social teaching that they have learned in their church. Yet, another reason why the interpretive task is a complex affair is that, in God’s freedom, believers may receive “more light and truth” issuing from God’s Word than they earlier experienced. Of course, every text of Scripture needs to be read in its context. Furthermore, each text of Scripture needs to be read in the light of the whole of Scripture. Moreover, because God has witnesses in every place and every culture, God may choose to speak to us through human culture and history as well. Still, there are times when the values of culture are antithetical to what our faith teaches….

Thankfully, one thing about Baptists have made consistent affirmation: once the church has discerned the normative teaching of Scripture, whatever is inconsistent with this is an unacceptable foundation for Christian praxis….[the letter presented by the cardinals] mentioned “the Word of God [and the church’s] doctrines and disciplines” as sources for the norms enshrined in the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church. They would also concur with Baptists on the importance of reading Scripture in the light of the reality of Christ. Even so, the extent of diversity that marks the social teaching of the churches today – even when they claim priority commitment to the Lord to whom Scripture bears faithful witness – is disconcerting. Because God is Lord of history, we can be assured that, in all that is happening, “God is working [God’s] purpose out.” Yet, a return to a situation of greater consensus would be so very welcome. Who would deny that relativism hurts the witness of the church?

Baptists in South Africa: The Bantu Baptist Association was formed in 1927 and became the Baptist Convention of South Africa in 1965. BCSA's mission "is to develop and proclaim a holistic, Afrocentric, and participatory understanding of the gospel of Jesus Christ and thereby equip its constituencies to facilitate the dynamic transformation of societies." South African theology professor Louise Kretzschmar says "the Baptist Convention of South Africa (BCSA), has sought both to develop and live out a more holistic, biblical understanding of the Christian faith and its social implications…the emphases of the Convention [are] on the renewal of theological education, leadership development, church development, black economic empowerment, and national reconciliation clearly reveals its holistic understanding of the Christian faith. “Through national workshops, regular contacts with the other Baptist groups, and working together with these groups to host Baptist World Alliance meetings, in 1998 and the Baptist World Congress in the same city in 2015 the BCSA has worked to bring unity and reconciliation among all South African Baptists, who, sadly, became divided on racial and linguistic lines in the 1960’s.
