How Mass wascelebrated in the year 150 A.D.

In the early Church, around the year 150 A.D., JustinMartyr described how the Christians celebrated what wecall “The Mass.”

“On Sunday we have a common assembly of allour members, whether they live in the city or theoutlying districts. The recollections of the apostles or the writings of the prophets are read, as long asthere is time. When the reader has finished, the president (presbyter or priest) of the assembly speaks tous (the homily). He urges everyone to imitate the examples of virtue we have heard in the readings. Thenwe all stand up together and pray.”

This corresponds to our “Liturgy of the Word.” “Then we all stand up together and pray” refers to our “Prayersof the Faithful” which was restored to the Mass after the Second Vatican Council.

“When the prayers are over, we embrace each other and exchange a kiss.”The kiss, or “sign of peace” as we call it, was restored to the Mass following the Second Vatican Council, although it was placed later in the Mass, shortly before Communion.

“On the conclusion of our prayer, bread and wine and water are brought forward. The president offersprayers and gives thanks to the best of his ability, and the people give assent by saying, “Amen.” TheEucharist is distributed, everyone present communicates, and the deacons take it to those who areabsent.”

This corresponds to our “Liturgy of the Eucharist.”“...bread and wine and water are brought forward” refers to our “Offertory Procession” or “Presentation of theGifts” which was restored to the Mass after the Second Vatican Council.“...the people give assent by saying, “Amen.” We, too, say “Amen” at the conclusion of the Eucharistic Prayer. The word “Amen” means “So be it!”“...and the deacons take it to those who are absent.” After several centuries of non-existence, the permanentdiaconate was restored to the Church after the Second Vatican Council.

“The wealthy, if they wish, may make a contribution, and they themselves decide the amount. Thecollection is placed in the custody of the president, who uses it to help the orphans and widows and allwho for any reason are in distress, whether because they are sick, in prison, or away from home. In aword, he takes care of all who are in need.”

Charity grows naturally out of the Eucharist.

“We hold our common assembly on Sunday because it is the first day of the week, the day on which Godput darkness and chaos to flight and created the world, and because on that same day our savior JesusChrist rose from the dead. For he was crucified on Friday and on Sunday he appeared to his apostlesand disciples and taught them the things that we have passed on for your consideration.”

Justin did not only describe the rite of the Eucharist. He also explained what it meant. In his letter he writes:

“We call this food Eucharist. We do not take it as ordinary food and drink. According to our doctrinethis nourishment, consecrated with a prayer of thanksgiving composed of Christ’s words, is the Flesh andBlood of Jesus.”

Pope Francis has a great devotion to St. Joseph.

He has placed his pontificate under St. Joseph’s protection and was inaugurated aspope on March 19, 2013, the primary feast day of St. Joseph. Last year the popeconsecrated the whole of the Vatican City State to St. Joseph.

One of the few things Pope Francis had sent over from Argentina after his electionwas a wooden statue of St. Joseph. Unfortunately, the head of the statue came offduring the journey to Italy, but the pope saw to it that it was fixed.

The statue is just outside Pope Francis’room in St. Martha’s House (the hotel helives in) and depicts St. Joseph lyingdown and asleep, positions symbolic ofthe Gospel: it is always in his sleep thatJesus’ adoptive Father receives messengers from heaven about Mary, andwhich name the child should take, and warnings about the danger Herodrepresents, causing the flight into Egypt.

The pope writes prayer requests on slips of paper and places them underthe pedestal of the statue, and he has placed so many slips of paper that thestatue is slowly rising in the front!

But Pope Francis said that we have to patient with St. Joseph! He toldsomeone: “You know, you have to be patient with these carpenters. Theytell you they’ll have a piece of furniture in a couple of weeks, and it endsup taking more than a month. But they get the job done, and they do itwell! You just have to be patient!”

The Father loves you!“If the written word of the Bible could be changed into a spoken word and become one single voice, this voice, morepowerful than the roaring sea, would cry out: The Father loves you!”

Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa, Papal Preacher

What’s the Good Word?I was returning on a trip on an airplane, and as I was coming back to Detroit, part of the time I spent reading myScriptures. When we landed and got up, the gentleman standing next to me, who had been seated next to me, said,“Well, Father, what’s the good word?”, and I thought, “Well, how do you summarize what’s in the Scriptures?” Whatever you’re reading, the good word always is: God loves us.That’s the good word, the blessed word - God loves us - and we need more and more, again and again, to makeourselves conscious of that: “God loves me. God loves me. We wouldn’t even be here unless God loved us. God hasloved us into being. That’s why we exist, because God loves us. God sustains in us in our very being.”That’s the kind of love that God shows for us and expects us to show to one another: that we love without exception, without condition, without limit. We love one another. Jesus takes it so far as to tell us we must love not just thosewho love us, but we must love even our enemies. Forgive; bring about reconciliation; forgive sin and restrain evil. That’s what we do when we love.”

Bishop Thomas Gumbleton

It is true to say that God’s love for us is like that of a

mother... God’s love is tender and merciful, patient andfull of understanding. In the Scriptures and also in theliving memory of the Church, the love of God is indeeddepicted and has been experienced as the compassionatelove of a mother.“Does a woman forget her baby at the breast, or fail tocherish the child of her womb? Even should she forget,I will never forget you.” (Isaiah 49:15)Jesus himself expressed a compassionate [motherly]love when he wept over Jerusalem, and when he said:“O Jerusalem... How often would I have gathered yourchildren as a mother hen gathers her brood under herwings.”

St. John Paul II

Each and every one of us is an object of God’s undying

love. We know that God’s eyes are always upon us,even when things seem very bleak. God is, indeed, ourFather. Even more, God is our Mother – not wanting tohurt us, but only to do good for us, all of us.

Pope John Paul I

Like a small child still totally dependent on his mother,

but old enough to recognize his need, Christians mustacknowledge their dependence on God. The image ofthe mother and child is a sign of the tender and maternallove of God.

Pope Benedict XVI

Just as a mother finds pleasure in taking her little child

on her lap, to feed and caress him, in like manner ourloving God shows his fondness for His beloved soulswho have given themselves entirely to Him and haveplaced all their hope in His goodness.

St. Alphonsus Ligouri

Mary, Our Mother,Queen of Peace,

Pray for us now.

Grant to us the priceless giftof peace,of forgiving all wrongs andharboring no grudges, for the reconciliation of allpeople as brothers andsisters.

May violence and warfare cease. May dialogue grow

and may people live in peace with each other.May new ways of justice and prosperity open up.We ask this of you whom we invoke as Queen of Peace now and at the hour of our death!

We entrust to you the victims of injustice and violence,

and all those who have died in naturaldisasters, all those who at the hour of their deathturn to you as mother and patron, so that with youwe may glorify together the Father, Son and theHoly Spirit. Amen

St. John Paul II
