“Winning isn't everything, but wanting to win is.”

Greetings..! and a warm welcome to the 'Founder's Issue' of the school magazine of SelaQui International School (S.I.S.). We have been working enthusiastically to compile this issue and to present before the readers a comprehensive source of information about the school and its endeavours.

Creating this issue has opened a whole new horizon of possibilities to explore in terms of the students, staff and faculty members we got to know while doing the same.

It ignites pleasure and satisfaction in us to shoulder this responsibility of launching this year's founder's issue which will take over as the Monthly Magazine by the name : “SEQUINS”.

This issue will open a window of opportunities to many who will know that as an academic institution we are bound to flourish and prosper. As we, at S.I.S., believe only in competing with self, thus we have consciously made an effort to deliver better every year.

We would like to thank all those who have, directly or indirectly, contributed their bit in breathing life into the pages of this issue.

We would also like to extend our heartiest gratitude to our Headmaster, Mr. Rashid Sharfuddin, for believing in us and empowering us to use our sense of creativity to give this issue its final shape.

Happy Reading,, (Editorial Team)

Headmaster’s Message

It is that beautiful time of the year at SelaQui with the promise of chill in the air. Founder's is the perfect time to celebrate our achievements and showcase it to our wider stakeholders. However, it is very easy to get carried away in all the celebrations and achievements, and overlook the wider vision that an institution stands for. Therefore, it is apt that this year, as we celebrate our 15th year, that we step back to revisit and reaffirm our commitments to the school and to the parents.

As you will realize from my Headmaster's report on Founder's evening that we have tried to keep our focus on delivering what matters most to students and parents. The school has grown and so have our challenges. Last year has been a story of growth not only in numbers but also in facilities. We now have a Riding school, a mini golf course, a rather well equipped amphitheater, five tennis courts, a cricket pavilion and all weather AC in dorms with 24×7 running hot water and a Volvo bus. All these were added in the last year. The girls' have been relocated to flats at the main gate which is safe, secure and very comfortable. All this has put a huge burden on our resources and we have no option left but to raise fee in the coming year to meet the growing demands for infrastructure and retaining and hiring good teachers and also to keep up with the inflation.

The school is also more visible in town and in India. We have participated in number of sporting and co-curricular activities both in town and outside Dehradun and have done remarkably well in it.

There is the promise of enormous potential in this 52 acres and my endeavor is to see how this can translate into better overall education and placements for our students. We have had a record number of foreign universities visiting us and our students have also made trips outside school to see various colleges and universities. My primary aim is on academics and disciplines related to it and I am very hopeful that we will have a great result this year as we have introduced few innovations and strengthened our academics system.

I must thank all our friends, colleagues and students in advance for putting up another great show at Founders' and most importantly the parents for their support and love. I look forward to seeing all of you at Founders' and the opportunity to have meaningful discussions about your child and the school. Enjoy the Founders and a very happy Deepawali in advance.

Best wishes!Rashid SharfuddinHeadmaster

INTERNATIONAL AWARD FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

SelaQui International School has introduced IAYP as a part of its co-curricular activity program. The International Award for Young People is an exciting self-development program for the youth, it equips the young with life skills , builds confidence and engages the youth with their communities.

IAYP aims at motivating young people aged between 14 and 25 years to become involved in a balanced program of voluntary self-development activities to take them through the potentially difficult period between adolescence and adulthood.

The Award’s concept is one of individual challenge, giving young people a balanced, non-competitive program of voluntary activities which encourage personal discovery and growth, self-reliance, perseverance, responsibility to themselves and service to their community. Those who participate in the Award are expected to follow its requirements in a non-competitive manner with a determination to succeed, either individually or as part of a team. The Award therefore is challenging, and can be undertaken at your own pace.

The Participation Age is between 14 and 25 years. The basic structure of the Award consists of 5 mandatory sections:

ServicesAdventurousJourneySkillsPhysical Recreation

There are 3 levels of the Award – Bronze, Silver & Gold. Participants must complete the four mandatory sections of Service, Adventurous Journey, Skill & Physical Recreation.Participants can undertake all three categories of the Award programme or enter directly at any of the three levels in the following age groups; Bronze Award (for those over 14), Silver Award (for those over 15) and Gold Award (for those over 16 years).

SINGING

The joy of singing is like Days with bright sunshineWith all the birds flying

And a rainbow shimmering in the sky.

It's like I'm at the top of the world And from up so high

What a beautiful world I can see from the sky

The music is so sweet And the voice so beautifulLike the stars are shining In the darkest black night.

When I am singing I start dreaming

Of being the greatest singer Will only be the beginning.

SeQuins visit Universities and Colleges in Delhi

At SelaQui International, we make all possible efforts to provide our students the best that they want. Apart from inviting representatives from various universities to visit us and meet our students, another initiative by the career department this year was to take students for campus visits. The interested students were taken for a visit to Delhi University's colleges and to the popular liberal art university Ashoka. For those who had a keen eye on Law experienced O.P Jindal and the creatives of SIS enjoyed at the Pearl Institute.

The campus visit was not just fun but educational. The students started with aptitude test, then a career awareness session. After a break they were sent to experience and live History. "The history session could not have been more engaging that it was"- quoted by a student. To add the icing to this tour, they were given independent college life experience at college dining halls, gyms and hostels for a night.

The overall experience was so overwhelming that the career department can not wait but organize another university visit soon for students.

Page 14: Founder's Issue

The day started very early for SeQuins on Wednesday as they were goaded into a very engaging interaction with some of the BEST US Universities which was organized by the careers department of SelaQui International school. Universities like:-

Agni

Pastoral

Dear Agnians,“ Home is a place you grow up wanting to leave, and grow old waiting to get back to.” John Ed Pearce. The metaphor of 'home' is strongly suggestive of the kind of ambience and atmosphere which Agni House generates and yet another glorious year comes to its conclusion, nostalgia seeps in. The bond, generated six year ago has become even stronger. “Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen and a push in the right direction”. This year again Agni House has demonstrated a turn around, as from last to last year Agni, a struggling House became the 2nd leading House of the School, and I am proud of all my Agnians. The spirit of the Agnians drew praise from teachers and students alike. The motto "FROM A LITTLE SPARK BURST A MIGHTY FIRE" worked wonders as the house spun its web of strategies and action. Palak Pandey as Head Girl, Praful Gupta as the Captain and Abhishek Siddhant as the Prefect took on mantle from where their senior left. Another prominent feature of Agni's success has been the commendable contribution from the house associates - Mrs. Shilpi Agarwal, Mr. Satish Sah, Mr. Satya Shrava Sharma, Mr. Shiv Sahai, Mr. Akash Agarwal and Mr. Mohan Singh Rawat and all the new students of Agni House. As a silent observer, I can only hope, the legacy that they all created and carried so proudly lives forever. In the end, I would like to say to all my Agni House family members that: "IT IS YOUR ATTITUDE, NOT YOUR APTITUDE, THAT DETERMINES YOUR ALTITUDE".

Jal

Just like a leader is as good as his followers, a military commander is as good as his soldiers, just like a chain is as good as its weakest link, we all today are the leaders only because of our belief in ourselves and under the able guidance of Shivam Sisodia, House Captain & Akash Maloo, Prefect. Our house boasts of excellent support system with Mr Karan Pahuja as the Resident Tutor and Mr Hussain Rizvi, Mr Ajay Kapoor, Mr Anurag Sharma, Ms Bhavana Mehrotra as House Tutors. We learnt how to stay confident yet humble in character. Sometimes at the top and at times, at the bottom. But that did not deter our spirits. What really matters to us is the participation in all the events and competition with paramount enthusiasm. Since we are here not to safeguard our little self but to experience, experience life in its variety. And variety is the spice of life. It is this experience that will eventually make us the leaders for future. It is this experience that we bank upon and thrive for. Winning and losing is part of this experience and we cherish every bit of it. Dare to be different. Being different means :- “ Not being afraid to challenge the norm - Being willing to take a chance - Asking why - Making your own track, not just following the well trodden path - Charting your own course and destiny - Being the person that you were meant to be “.

We intend to stay focused and trust our instincts and we will never go wrong : Today and Forever….

Proud to be a Jalites..…

Report of trip to Sursingdhar (25/09/2015-27/09/2015)

Going on a Educational trip means more than simply leaving the school grounds. Educational trips should always have a major educational element, but the impact of Educational trips can extend much further. The importance of Educational trips includes giving students the chance to build closer bonds with their classmates, experience new environments and enjoy a day away from the classroom.

The students of class XIth and XIIth went to Sursingdhar, after the completion of their half yearly examination. It is a place to unwind and do nothing. The property is located in the jungle which is 2kms off the road with a panoramic view of the Himalayas and a sneak peek view of Tehri lake. It's a place away from the hustle bustle and fast paced city life. Nature gets the most of you and you take the best of natural views from there. The students enjoyed a lot and did their bit to the social service also.

An Educational Tour to IMA

A group of 21 students, keen to know and experience the life of an IMA trainee, because that's what they dream to be in the near future, were taken to live their dream for a day.

SelaQui International School has always valued the dreams that its students have. The career department plans to let the students experience a day of their future and then take an informed decision and be selective about their career choices. Not only for the sole purpose of selectivity but also to motivate its students, the career department is taking a lead and providing visits to various places.

We began in the month of July with IMA tour, where the students visited the campus and met many important officials too. We plan to provide such more tour to various universities in the coming months.

Page 45: Founder's Issue

When I joined SelaQui I was at a crossroad of my life when things didn't seem very positive for me. I had been asked to repeat my academic year. It was then I decided I need a change. People still ask me why I joined a boarding school when instead there were so many options in Delhi. I wanted to experience something new in my life. I was jaded with the routine of waking up, going to school and returning from tuitions. I don't know what had got the better of me- the monotonous schedule of my everyday life or my inability to keep up with my studies. The first time I stepped into SelaQui International School I was blown away by how scenic it is. The greenery was a refreshing change from the hustle bustle of the city. The buildings seemed like just out of an architecture and design magazine. SelaQui had me from the word go. My parents, grandparents and sister loved it. After the disaster that happened in my previous school, I felt this would be the best place for me to start again. Yes I took admission here looking at the infrastructure, the greenery and the hills. But SelaQui is more than that. It is the people who make a place, not the bricks. The students here are like brothers, and they treat you like one. Perhaps because we are all on the same boat, each away from the comfort of our homes and familial relationships, we are there for each other in a way that I have never experienced in my life as a day scholar. There are happy days and difficult days, but my friends are there with me at every step. I have heard that people get homesick in boarding schools, but this school feels like my second home. And this is just the beginning of a journey for relationships of a lifetime. Life in a boarding school is a little like life in a nutshell- we meet all kinds of people, students and teachers, we nurture some relationships, we 'handle' the rest; we are thrown at the deep end and we swim, we survive. When you think about it, everyday has the same schedule, but each day brings new challenges, and we overcome some, we struggle with some, but we never stop and never give up or give in. My family tells me I am a changed person now; that I look happier, am more talkative, and have a “ready to do anything attitude”. Life at SelaQui has given me a confidence that I didn't I know I had. And in the days to come I look forward to discovering more about myself.

Abhay Wadhwa, Class - XI (Humanities).

A school counselor plays a pivotal role in educational system and provides assistance to students in the form of psychological, emotional and social aspects of life. My initiation has always been to work on the holistic development of a child. Since the day I joined SelaQui International School a fully residential school I have rejoiced and relived my own experience of a boarding school. Therefore it was easy for me to tap the emotional crises and different lifestyle of a child living in a boarding school. The very first thing I did was to conduct Anti-Bullying program in the school which helped the students to identify and stop the bullying behavior. as a part of my job I have also started taking life-skills classes for classes 6th, 7th and 8th which is based on ten life skills led down by World Health Organization (WHO). To identify and provide remediation for problematic behaviors and academics delays some of the Intelligence test, Learning Disability test and Behavioral screening are also administered around the year. I have also integrated a helpful remedial teaching-learning strategies and suggestive Individual attention accordingly for every Child with the Special needs. Seemingly in boarding school Children are usually found with homesickness and typical adolescence issues which I have resolved by giving Counseling and therapeutic sessions. These Counseling sessions comprises of introspection of problems and behavioral-environmental modifications tailored accordingly. Until now some of the Psychological based workshops have been conducted such as Anger Management, Relationships problems among teenaged girls, Infatuation and maintaining healthy relationships. Moreover there has been a start-up of group counseling for focused groups including girls, Mindfulness sessions and Panchatantra story sessions for classes 6th, 7th and 8th residing holding house. The main agendas for these sessions are to release stress, share personal problems, help in academic deficiencies and modify their behaviors. Apart from promoting and enhancing student's life at boarding school, I have also managed to bring better understanding towards Issues pertaining to Scholastic Delays, Common Adolescence issues and Life skills education for Adults through Faculty Development Program (FDP). As I am specialized in Child and Adolescence Psychology my main focus is entirely based on provision of psychological intervention and remediation to build today's children to become the productive and well-adaptive adults of future.
