Welcome! On behalf of the entire New York Medical College community, we are honored to welcome you to the 2012 Founder’s Dinner. Your generous support of this dinner and your presence here this evening signal your strong partnership with New York Medical College and your belief in its ability to improve our world.

Institutions cannot progress without the help of many partners, and New York Medical College is no exception. In fact, it has been through numerous strong partnerships that the College has advanced its mission throughout its 152-year history. That is why we are so excited about New York Medical College’s new partnership with the Touro College and University System under the leadership of Alan Kadish, M.D., president, and of Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor for health affairs and chief executive officer. The opportunities that this partnership presents for continuing growth and increased excellence hold great promise for the College’s future.

Tonight we are honoring two individuals who embody the spirit of committed partnership and distinguished leadership that lie at the heart of the College’s continuing evolution and success. As long-standing faculty members and academic and executive leaders at New York Medical College, Karl P. Adler, M.D., and Ralph A. O’Connell, M.D., have helped the College to achieve significant growth and advancement over the past thirty years. We are delighted to have this opportunity to recognize all that they have accomplished on behalf of this institution on this gala occasion.

Once again, thank you for helping to advance New York Medical College’s mission through your generous support of the Founder’s Dinner. We look forward to maintaining our partnership with each of you as the College continues to evolve as one of the finest health sciences universities in the country.

With our deepest gratitude and best wishes for a wonderful evening,

William Cuen Bryant Award

New York Medical College established the William Cullen Bryant Award in 1983 to recognize those remarkable individuals who, in the tradition of the College’s founder, William Cullen Bryant, demonstrate seminal leadership in health care, science, education, business, or the arts.

Bryant, the son of a physician, was an editor, philosopher, poet, lawyer, and dynamic civic leader who substantively influenced the issues of his day through the power of his pen. During the second half of the 19th century, he led a select group of influential individuals in creating New York Medical College, which today has become one of the nation’s largest private health sciences universities. Bryant subsequently served as president of the College’s Board of Trustees for more than a decade and was the medical school’s first president. The qualities of distinguished and broad leadership that Bryant demonstrated have been characteristic of all William Cullen Bryant medal awardees.

Karl P. Adler, M.D., received his B.A. from Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J., and his M.D. from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. He completed residency training in internal medicine at Bellevue Hospital, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and New York Hospital in Manhattan, and at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, New York, where he was chief medical resident.

After holding academic appointments at Albany Medical College, SUNY-Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, and Cornell University Medical College, Dr. Adler joined New York Medical College in 1981 as professor of medicine and chief of medicine at Metropolitan Hospital Center. After serving for one year as acting dean, in 1986 he was appointed dean of the School of Medicine, and from 1990 to 1994 he served as both dean and vice president for medical affairs at the College.

In 1994 he left New York Medical College to become president and chief executive officer of St. Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center in New York City, where he remained until 2001. That year he was appointed archbishop’s delegate for health care and president of Providence Health Services for the Archdiocese of New York as well as chairman of the board of ArchCare. He returned to New York Medical College in 2007 as its president and chief executive officer with the objective of charting a new course for the College that ultimately led to its joining the Touro College and University System in 2011. He subsequently served as chief executive officer from 2011 to 2012 while facilitating the College’s transition to new leadership.

A diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and fellow of The New York Academy of Medicine, Dr. Adler has held clinical appointments at Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers in New York City, Lincoln Medical and Mental Center in the Bronx, Westchester County Medical Center in Valhalla, and Kings County Hospital Center in Brooklyn, New York. He also served as chief of the Department of Medicine at Metropolitan Hospital Center in New York City and at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, and as chief of nephrology at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, New York.

Dr. Adler was appointed by Governor Mario M. Cuomo to the New York State Task Force for Life and the Law in 1987, and from 1995 to 2004 he served as a member of the New York State Hospital Review and Planning Council. He also chaired the Brooklyn Task Force for Emergency Medical Services. In addition to providing ongoing leadership in medical affairs for the Archdiocese of New York, he currently serves as a member of the boards of trustees of ArchCare, Calvary Holding Company, the Center for Comprehensive Health Practice, Inc., Fidelis Care New York, and St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie, New York. He is also a member of the Catholic Health Care Council of the New York State Catholic Conference and of its Policy Forum, as well as the Quality Performance Committee of Fidelis Care New York. In addition, he is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, the American College of Physicians, and the Association of American Medical Colleges.

Dr. Adler and his wife, Joan, have four children and two grandchildren. They live in New York City.

Dr. O’Connell was born in New York City in 1938, the son of Ralph E. and Agnes H. O’Connell. He graduated from Fordham Preparatory School in 1955 and from the College of the Holy Cross, A.B. cum laude, in 1959. He received his M.D. from Cornell University Medical College in 1963. In his senior year he received a fellowship to study blood-clotting mechanisms with Professor R. G. Macfarlane at Oxford University Medical School. He subsequently completed a surgical internship and began a residency in psychiatry at St. Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center of New York. His residency was interrupted by the Viet Nam War, during which he was commissioned as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and served as chief of neuropsychiatry at Ireland Army Hospital in Fort Knox, Kentucky.

After returning to St. Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center to finish his residency, Dr. O’Connell completed a fellowship in psychopharmacology. He then joined the St. Vincent’s medical staff, first as chief of the Psychiatry Inpatient Service and then as vice chairman and clinical director under Joseph T. English, M.D. During this time he conducted an active research program, including studies on psychiatric complications of cardiac surgery, lithium carbonate in affective disorders, the influence of biological, psychological, and social factors on long-term outcome of manic depressive disorder, and single proton emission computed tomography (SPECT) brain imaging in the diagnosis of mental disorders. In 1996 Dr. O’Connell was appointed provost and dean of the School of Medicine at New York Medical College, stepping down in 2012. He continues as professor of psychiatry and the behavioral sciences at the College.

Dr. O’Connell is a member of the American Medical Association, the New York Academy of Sciences, distinguished life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, member of the American College of Psychiatry, fellow of the American Psychopathological Association, and fellow and trustee emeritus of the New York Academy of Medicine. He is past president of the Associated Medical Schools of New York, the New York Psychiatric Society, and the University Club of New York. He is editor emeritus of Comprehensive Psychiatry, vice chair of the Board of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York, and a member of the Council of Rockefeller University. He has received a number of honors, including an Army Commendation Medal for services at Fort Knox, the Academy Plaque of the New York Academy of Medicine, faculty inductee in Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, the Distinguished Trustee Award of the United Hospital Fund, and the Community Service Award from Westchester Medical Center. In 2010 a Doctor of Science degree, honoris causa, was conferred on him by New York Medical College. He is listed in Who’s Who in America.

Dr. O’Connell is married to Jane Burke O’Connell, president of the Altman Foundation. The couple lives in New York City and has three adult children and one granddaughter.
