This year’s American Indian Higher EducationConsortium (AIHEC) was held March 18 through March 21 in Rapid City, SD. South Dakota’s four tribalcolleges – Oglala Lakota College, Sinte GleskaUniversity, Sisseton Wahpeton College, and Sitting BullCollege – served as the host institutions, planning andorganizing the conference. If you are a new SGU readeror friend we like to give a little brief overview of whatAIHEC is. AIHEC was founded in 1972 by the presi-dents of the nation’s first six tribal colleges as an informalcollaboration among member colleges. Through AIHEC,tribal colleges nurtured a common vision and learned tosee themselves as a national movement. Their work –research, advocacy and lobbying – was done throughvolunteerism and came almost exclusively from the presidents, community members, and other tribal andlocal leaders. Today, AIHEC has grown to represent 37 colleges in the United States and one Canadian institution and is the lifeline of these tribal colleges.

The conference kicked off with Student festivities onSaturday, the evening of March 18 with a T-shirtexchange. Students traded school apparel, rekindledfriendships and made new ones. The fourth annualpoetry slam followed. Student competitions began onSunday with the science bowl, hand games, knowledgebowl, web construction, business bowl, speech, the one-act play, and student film. Off-site, at Douglas HighSchool, tribal colleges battled it out on the boards for theAIHEC basketball championship – Indian Country’s version of March Madness.

The annual Parade of Flags opened the morning ofMarch 20. The opening ceremony began with a pipeceremony by traditional healer Richard Moves Camp, abachelor’s and master’s graduate of Sinte Gleska. SGU

President Dr. Lionel Bordeaux addressed the students, staff and conference attendees with the opening remarks.

The AIHEC powwow was held Monday evening and the5K run Tuesday morning. The conference concludedTuesday evening with the AIHEC student awards banquet recognizing the first, second and third placewinners of each event, and an evening dance with musicprovided by a DJ.

Students from Sinte Gleska partook in the art show, science bowl, hand games, chess, archery, and businessbowl. Sinte Gleska University students brought homeseveral first place awards, as well, as placing in theirrespective competitions.
