What is CARNAVAL? Save the date:
November 5, 2010Chicago Cultural Center
CARNAVAL is the annual fundraiser that supports the work of the Latino Policy Forum, the only organization in the Chicago area that
facilitates the involvement of Latinos at all levels of public decision-making.
But having such an important mission doesn’t mean we can’t have a fun…
CARNAVAL 2009
Latinos are Illinois’ economic engine.
Latinos have represented 90% of the state’s population growth over the past decade.
Latinos are the state’s largest ethnic minority. Latinos bought half of the homes in the state
between 2000 and 2008. Latinos represent 1-in-4 children under age 5
& 3-in-4 entrants to Chicago’s labor market. More than 90% of Latino children are U.S.-
born citizens.
But state investment has not kept pace.
Less than half of Latino-led nonprofit organizations received a grant from the state in FY08.
Latino youth lack access to quality, culturally-relevant preschool programs in predominately Latino neighborhoods.
The mortgage foreclosure crisis has hit Latinos communities especially hard, with foreclosures up nearly 150% in Latino city wards since 2007.
Latino workers represent 4% of the state employees, despite being nearly 15% of the state labor force.
What we’re doing to shape our future.
The Forum conducts analysis to inform, influence and lead.
Its goals are to improve education outcomes,
advocate for affordable housing, promote just immigration policies,
and engage diverse sectors of the community, with an understanding that
advancing Latinos advances a shared future.
