Understand the procedures for launching an application on MS Windows XP.

Used to access applications, files, folders, and computer settings.

OPEN AN APPLICATION
START MENU BY THE NUMBERS

Place the mouse point on the start button and single left click.

Single left click ALL PROGRAMS.

Look for your desired Application.

Note: Items with an arrow to their right are folders and when the mouse pointer is placed over them another menu will open.

Click the desired application.

Place the mouse point on the start button and single left click.

Single left click ALL PROGRAMS.

Single left click ACCESSORIES.

Single left click on WORD PAD.

The Task Bar allows you to quickly start programs and manage tasks on your computer.

THE TASK BAR

Shows you which programs are running and allows you to switch between them.

Is empty when you turn on the computer.As you open programs they will Taskbar.

A window is a framed region on the Desktop.

Each window contains a different program or document.

The types of windows are:

Application Windows

Document Windows

APPLICATION WINDOW

Each time you launch/open an application/program, the Operating System creates a window through which you interact with the program.

APPLICATION WINDOW

The more programs you start, the more windows you have open.

Several program windows can be open on your Desktop at the same time.

DOCUMENT WINDOW

A document is any information you create with a program, such as a letter, spreadsheet, or database file.

ELEMENTS

TITLE BAR

The title bar is a horizontal bar directly below the windows top borders between the Control Menu Box and the Resize Button.

The title bar lists the windows name.

SCROLL BARS

Vertical Scroll Bar:

Is the vertical bar on the right side of the window with arrows. It is used to scroll up and down the window.

Horizontal Scroll Bar

Is the horizontal bar at the bottom of the window above the status bar with arrows at its ends. It is used to scroll to the left or right of the window.

RESIZING AND CLOSE BUTTONS

The resize and close buttons appear in the right top corner of the window.

MINIMIZE

RESTORE DOWN

MAXIMIZE

CLOSE/ EXIT

MINIMIZE / CLOSE BUTTON

Removes the window from the desktop so it only appears on the Taskbar

Closes the window permanently, it does not appears on the Taskbar

MAXIMZE / RESTORE BUTTON

Enlarges the window to cover the whole screen.

Reduces the window to its previous size before it was maximized
