Term 3 - Week 3 “Education for a Better Quality of Life” Page 1 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Welcome Back to Term 3 I am pleased to share that we have started the term well with all staff engaging in professional learning that is linked to our school plan for the purpose to deliver excellent education to our students. Our School Learning Support Officers went to a conference in Bathurst and strengthened their knowledge about their roles, Trauma, Behaviour Management and Sensory Processing as well as practical strategies for Literacy and Numeracy support. Our teaching staff and Administration Officers remained at school and reviewed the amended school plan focussing on delivering differentiated assessment. Students returned the following day refreshed and ready to learn with more than 90% of students exhibiting the values of positive behaviour for learning over the first three weeks of this term already. I encourage all students to show leadership by being in uniform, prepared to learn with correct equipment and show respect through positive communication all the while doing their best. You can see the amended school plan at the end of this newsletter and I welcome further feedback from parents and students before I move to publish this on our school website later this term. New Staff I welcome Mrs Cheryle Copland to our school this term as the Relieving Head Teacher English/HSIE/LOTE. She comes with a wealth of experience and expertise in her Key Learning Area. She has replaced Mr Jason McKee who has stepped into a teaching position for personal reasons related to health. I take this opportunity to thank Mr McKee for his contribution to the faculty and the school and welcome the imminent leadership change. White Ribbon Day Our annual community event for the second time running in partnership with Parkes High School and local Police to promote awareness of Domestic Violence was hosted by Parkes High School at Pioneer Park in Parkes last week and coordinated by our Deputy Principal Mr Jason Nottingham. It was a great day that showcased solidarity and harmony amongst locals who can and will make a difference with the words and actions they choose to make a better world and stand up against men and women who inflict violence of any kind against their partners and family. We celebrated the occasion with food and fun. The fun was provided by the footy match between Forbes High School and Parkes High School in which Forbes High School triumphed again winning 42-10. We look forward to hosting this event next year in Forbes. I take this opportunity to acknowledge our three female students who refereed this match with confidence, flare and professionalism thank you Shanika Harpur, Tahlia Harpur and Jessica Ashcroft. Gratitude is extended to both our Deputy Principal Mr Daniel West and our Aboriginal Education Officer Mr Barry Merritt for coordinating the Boys’ Night In later that evening. I was proud to witness a group of boys and their fathers engage together with male staff at this event to consolidate our resolve to stand up against Domestic Violence and act as leaders in this change. I was humbled by the respect and maturity demonstrated by our students whilst they were confronted with difficult concepts and experiences. I genuinely was left in awe of them all. C-Moc North Parkes Mines remains a sponsor for this significant event and both Adam and Chase presented awards to our students who act as ambassadors for White Ribbon. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT cont. Parent Teacher Night (PTN) Success Out Term 3 PTN was a huge success thanks to our families and friends that came out on the night to collect Year 7-11 reports and engage in conversations about their children’s progress with our talented staff. The number of parents from last PTN to this event had almost doubled. The faculties showcased a sample of the students work. Hospitality students served great food and coffee through our newest asset ‘The food Van’ (yet to be officially named). The following parents won the lucky door prize, congratulation Anna Mraz, Melissa Cowan and Hannah Vonthien and the community voted Science as the best display on the night. Well done, Ms Edwards and the Science Team.

Semester One Assembly Celebrations It was a great occasion last week in which the local Mayor Graham Miller, P&C President Raewyn Molloy and Joanne Rath and Anne Bolton from Evolution mines who presented $15,000 worth of scholarships that were awarded to 5 students who finished Year 12 last year to go into further study at TAFE and University. I acknowledge the hard work of Maddie Cowan, Isobelle Herbert, Nicholas Mulligan, Tim Dukes and Baedon Isbester and congratulate their commitment to learning. Other students in the school were awarded prizes for their academic progress and their attendance. I encourage all students to be inspired by these student leaders of learning and aim to achieve your potential best.

Prize Donation for Attendance Awards We know there is a strong correlation between attendance at school and performance in learning. For this reason it is fitting to have an award for improvement in attendance. Lyn Ward representing the Forbes Neighbourhood Watch community visited the principal to donate $500 for two prizes each worth $250 to be awarded at visited the principal to donate $500 for two prizes each worth $250 to be awarded at Presentation Day to a Year 7 and Year 8 student progressing into the following year and demonstrating improved or strong attendance. The prize money will support the purchase of school supplies, uniform and access to school excursions. I encourage all students to strive for their highest personal achievement demonstrating care for self and others and work cooperatively with staff and parents to achieve your goals. This prize is committed to the school for 2018-2020. Thank you again, Forbes Neighbourhood Watch for the sponsorship.

BEANIES FOR BRAIN CANCER DAY

On Friday 29th June students and staff wore beanies to support the Mark Hughes Foundation with Beanie for Brain Cancer. Along with donations we sold bacon and egg rolls on the day, FHS beanies and had a lolly guessing competition. Congratulations to Claudia Cheney who was successful with the guessing competition, winning a massive container of lollies. The SRC handed out Beanie for Brain Cancer Purple slips for every student who wore a beanie, they then went into a draw to win a Mark Hughes beanie. Congratulations to winners Claire Maslin, Melissa Taylor, Iesha Sinclair, Emily Gartner. The day was very successful with our school raising about $400 for the foundation. It is not too late to go to https://beanie.markhughesfoundation.com.au/ to buy a beanie to support a great cause. Many more funds are needed to help with research to find a cure for brain cancer. Thank you to everyone for a successful fundraising day on Friday. Congratulations to the students who were the winners of the MHF Beanies. Top effort Forbes High.

PBL STATE OF ORIGIN EXCURSION

On Sunday 23rd June 45 students were lucky to be taken to Sydney to watch the mighty NSW Blues take on QLD in the second State of Origin match. Much to Mr Bainbridge and Mr Byrnes’ disgust, NSW went away with a very successful and entertaining win. Our students got into the cheering spirit and enjoyed some donut, dagwood dogs, and great seats in the middle of the screaming NSW fans.

Credit goes to our Qld supports who were great sports and helped push the bus for the long trip home! A massive thank you to the staff that gave up their weekend to help make this excursion possible. Mrs Neville, Mrs Price, Ms Hall, Mr Merritt and Ms McConnell who all did an exceptional job, thank you for your commitment and enthusiasm in organising and taking our students to the game. Our 45 students were selected through exceptional behaviour and attendance, along with the other 150 students who were eligible. You guys rock and are continually displaying our school values of being respectful, responsible, honest and doing your best. Keep up this awesome effort and keep your eyes and ears peeled for the next exciting acknowledgement excursion which is brewing by the PBL Team. Ms McConnell and the PBL Team

WHITE RIBBON CUP

On Monday 30th of July, students travelled to Parkes to cheer on the FHS team in the annual White Ribbon Cup match against Parkes High School. The aim of the day was to create awareness of domestic violence and to give our youth a chance to speak out in the community. Forbes were once again victorious, with an outstanding win of 42-10.

Charlie Staines was the recipient of the Louise

Cole Memorial Award, and Harrison Ford from

Parkes High School received the Oliver Carlisle

Memorial Award.

All students represented Forbes High School to a

high standard of which we are proud. We look

forward to defending the cup again next year on

home turf.

WHITE RIBBON CUP GUERNSEY

Recently Tessa Pymont was presented with her own White Ribbon Guernsey from a design she created for the Forbes High School White Ribbon Cup Team. Tessa based the design on the Aboriginal colours as a way to show respect for Aboriginal people as they play on their traditional land.

Tell Them From Me I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department

of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known

to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student

wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

You may remember that our students also participated in a Tell Them From Me student survey in Term 1 this year.

Asking students to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify trends in student responses as well as

track engagement and motivation across the school year.

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think

about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More

than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students.

Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au

I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30

minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 27 August and 26 October. Participating in

the survey is entirely voluntary.

A consent form will be sent home with students prior to the survey. If you do not want your child or children to

participate, please return the form to school. Copies of the form and FAQs are available from:

http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents.

The consent form and FAQs are available in 23 languages.
