PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

It is my great privilege and honour to be Principal of Forbes High School (FHS). It is also a tremendous responsibility to lead a school and challenge the status quo in order to continue a journey of improvement for all members of our community but especially for our children and students. I am looking forward to working alongside students, staff and parents to learn together and achieve our shared goals.

Most recently, I was the Principal at Cobar High School and am very excited to utilise this experience to ensure a leadership transition is as smooth as possible. I take this opportunity to thank sincerely, Mr Jason Nottingham for Relieving as Principal in the last three terms and acknowledge Mr Charles Dwyer for his long-time contribution during his tenure at this school. Under their leadership I have inherited a school that I am very proud to be associated with.

I would also like to acknowledge Ms Toni Edwards, Ms Isabel Cassilles and Ms Pamela McConnell for their role in relieving as Deputy Principal, Head Teacher Science and Head Teacher Secondary Studies for one and five terms respectively. The leadership capacity within our school amongst our executive and classroom teachers is very strong and contributes to the excellent tone of our school. Most recently, I have enjoyed attending our P&C meeting, The Lions Club meeting and engaged in many conversations with staff and students alike to understand important issues as related to our wider community. I have invited our new Director Educational Leadership Mr David Lloyd to our school a couple of times to introduce him to both staff and students as we work together to take our students to the next level.

So, what are my initial impressions of Forbes High School?

Since the beginning of Term 2, I am greeted by enthusiastic, friendly, respectful and dignified students who are proud of their school and community. As a Principal, I enjoy working with young people who are tomorrow’s leaders. Our student’s show leadership in the way they address staff and peers, wear uniform, follow staff directions and come to school prepared for learning.

The staff at FHS are passionate, hard-working and committed to serving our students best. The dialogue between staff and students demonstrates an earnestness to share ideas to ensure FHS is at the forefront of education. Professional learning is valued and staff accept the challenge to embrace opportunities for innovation that breeds success for our students.

Finally, I acknowledge the parent’s and carer’s in our community who have been contacted by me in the last few weeks or have taken the initiative to meet with me recently. I value the team spirit and support you extend our school and work together to advance student outcomes for our children.

As Principal at FHS I look forward to setting our students up to complete their secondary education for the purpose to prepare their transition from school and into work and further study after Year 12. I often say, if you follow school expectations you set yourself up for opportunity, choice and ultimately success.

STAFF AND STUDENTS WALK TOGETHER WITH THE COMMUNITY TO COMMEMORATE ANZAC DAY The Forbes annual ANZAC Day commemoration service and march took place during the school holidays. We had a lovely turnout of students and staff come along on the day to honor and remember the sacrifice our soldiers made for our country. Captain’s Chelsea Turner and Mitchell Ashcroft, along with Vice Captain’s Claire Maslin and Konner Ryan did a beautiful job leading the school on the day.

TOM SETS OFF TO TOUR ITALY IN 2019! During Term 1, I attended Lake Burrendong for the Central West Band Camp. After a week of working and practising each day, we played at a final concert, where awards were presented out at the end. I was nominated to apply for the State Wind Band, but was unsuccessful in making it though. I was also invited to tour with the West of the Divide tour group in January 2019. This is a fantastic opportunity for me personally, with the tour travelling to Italy and performing at places such as the Vatican and the Colosseum. Most recently I have been accepted to participate in the State Senior Music Camp to be held in July at the Sydney Academy of Sport at Narrabeen, which I am very excited to be a part of.

TOM KEMP SHIELD- U16’S MAKE IT TO ROUND 2

Forbes High School students competed in the first round of the Tom Kemp competition against The Henry Lawson High School. Winning 46-nil the team then progressed onto round two. The Forbes High School Tom Kemp Rugby League team then travelled to West Wyalong to contest the 2nd Round of the CHS knockout. The day was overcast and not conducive to fast free flowing rugby league. At half time the score was 18-4 to West Wyalong High School with Forbes High unable to capitalise on several try scoring opportunities. The second half was a tight tussle with again Forbes High School missing vital chances to close the gap. The score remained the same in the second half with neither team able to add to the half time score. Best players for Forbes were Coby Ryan (Captain), Cody Whitby and Ben Molloy.

COMBINED HIGH SCHOOL TOUCH FOOTBALL COMPETITION On Friday 4th May, 17 students travelled to Mudgee with Mr Bainbridge and Miss Stewart to compete in the Combined High School Touch Football competition. The girl’s team played their first round competing against Kandos High School. It was an extremely close game, ending in a tie. This resulted in a drop off. With only 3 players left on each side, Kandos scored a goal and won the game. Result 3-4 Kandos way. This unfortunately eliminated the girls and they played in an eliminated game where the score was a tie. The boys played their first round against Kandos High also, with Forbes coming out the winners by several goals.

The second game the boys played Mudgee High. This was an extremely tough game, and unfortunately Mudgee proved to be too good for Forbes coming out the winners.

ART FOR OTHERS- NSW OPERATION ART The current Yr. 8 Art classes have been making artworks of their own subject matter choice, for the NSW Operation Art initiative. Our new Principal, Ms Bristina chose the four students works to represent the school at the Homebush Bay selection centre. The lucky students were Elyas Merritt, Billy-Jo Crisp, Cooper Young and Trent Tyne. These works will now be exhibited with the other 800 or so submitted works from all over the state, to help raise money for children's hospital wards. An audience of over 10,000 will view this exhibition. A selection will be shown at the Art Gallery of NSW and then will tour to Regional Galleries. A final selection will be chosen to hang within the hospitals to cheer up young patients. A lucky few will be chosen to represent Australia internationally in the Australian Embassy's. Ms Bristina, commented on the quality of all the works presented and saying “it was a very hard to choose just four”. I would like to wish the students the best of luck with their entries.

YEAR 9 & 10 GETTING VISUAL WITH ART! We are making life size plastic people in Visual Arts this term. A major part of why we are doing this is that we are learning how to collaborate in group work, and create a sculptural piece that will communicate meaning to our audience. As we are also looking at artists who relate to the environment in our theory work, it made sense that we should address the issue of plastic waste in our school, community and world. Many plastics are not recyclable and this must change. Most plastics take around 500 years to become natural again and in the meantime they damage our wildlife, waterways and aquatic creatures. They also break down into smaller and smaller particles called micro plastics and enter the bloodstream of the creatures we eat. Many of these chemicals then cause cancer. We hope to educate our audience and encourage recycling. If people can try to use the same plastic multiple times rather than just once. Take carry bags for shopping, try not to buy cling wrapped foam tray food and use the mushroom paper bags for your vegies. Maybe the shops will then get the hint too. Saving beautiful Forbes is worth the hassle! -Mrs Hill

WESTERN OPEN NETBALL On Thursday the 29th of March the open girl’s netball team travelled to Orange to compete in the Western Opens Netball carnival. The girl’s team consisted of Claire Maslin, Mikaylah Dukes, Sophie Cowan, Libby Mylecharane, Janssen Mores, Jess Alcorn and Shanika Harpur. The girls played three games in their pool and were successful in winning two games and just went down in the last game. This sent them into second position in their pool which put them in the finals. The girls put up a good game and only just lost the finals game. A good day was had by all players. The girls would like to thank Mathilda Langham for umpiring on the day and Mrs Price and Mrs Maslin for taking their time to help the girls travel to Orange to compete.

TEACHERS SUPPORTING TEACHERS IN ASSESSING ASSESSMENT WORKSHOPS

During Term 1, my role as mEsh Stage 6 Mathematics Virtual Network Coordinator was a busy one. I organised five face-to-face professional learning workshops around the Wagga Wagga Directorate for teachers of Stage 6 Mathematics. I recruited Stuart Palmer (over 20 years’ experience teaching Mathematics) to assist me in presenting these workshops. We visited places such as Narrandera, Parkes, Dubbo, Goulburn and Bateman's Bay. Over these 5 days, we had a total of 117 teachers from both government and non-government schools attend. This was a first! During the workshops, our learning intention was to increase teacher knowledge, skills and understanding of assessment in terms of planning, programming, writing and marking, sharing resources and creating networks. We focused mainly on the new Stage 6 Mathematics Syllabuses and touched on Stages 4 & 5 Mathematics too. We encouraged teachers to present too with samples of assessment tasks they have conducted at their own schools. The feedback we received was very positive as many of these teachers work in rural and remote schools which mean they very rarely have the opportunity to interact face-to-face. It was great seeing so many teachers come together and create networks which, I hope will continue into the future. I thoroughly enjoyed working with Stuart and my experience in presenting has improved, which will benefit my role at Forbes High School, supporting students and other staff. It’s great that I am able to bring back all the learning I have gained to share with staff at our school. Overall, I loved meeting all the wonderful teachers and hearing about all the great work they do.
