On November 19th, several students attended the Muscle Shoals Chapter of the IMA meeting. The guest speaker was Steve Sledge, CPA and Partner KPMG Audit. He gave an overview of the history of Blockchain and its possibili-ties. Blockchain technology is in its early stages but it is ex-pected to have a huge impact on business in the future.

Want to Join the Athens State Accounting Club? Three Easy Steps:

1. Be a student at Athens State enrolled in at least 6 hours 2. Be a student member of the Institute of Management Accountants (www.imanet.org) 3. Email your IMA member number to Professor Emily Corzine

On January 28th students attended the Muscle Shoals IMA chapter meeting with Dr. John Berzett. The subject was the new tax update taking effect this

year and the speaker was Kent Quinn, CPA. He gave an overview of the most impactful changes account-ants will encounter in pre-paring tax returns. This was excellent information for those planning to work on returns this tax season.

Amanda Bertagnolli, an HR profes-sional from Crabtree, Rowe and Berger, spoke with the club on Jan-uary 31st. She discussed Profes-sionalism Within the Workplace. Amanda covered several items stu-dents should be aware of in the workplace. Some of which are: ap-

propriate dress, social media presence, and conduct. Amanda stressed the importance of conducting yourself appropriately in the workplace, no matter how you feel about any given situation. This meeting was very informa-

Karen Reetz from Wiley spoke to the Accounting Club on Janu-ary 17th. She discussed the CPA exam, advantages of having the certification and pointed out strategies students could use to to pass the exam. Karen shared about the Wiley CPA prep mate-rials available for aspiring CPAs. She drew names for free Wiley study materi-als. Bethany Meadows, Sarah Gibson, and Pius Ap-piah were the lucky winners of free study materials.

IMA Student Leadership Conference

Members of the Athens State University IMA Student Chapter Accounting Club attended the IMA Student Leadership Conference in St Louis, MO from November 1st - 3rd, 2018. During the conference, participants had the opportunity to attend one of the following industry tours; St. Louis Cardinals Bush Stadium, The Feder-al Reserve Bank of St. Louis, and Nestle Purina Headquarters. Following the industry tours, a Wel-come Reception was held where participants were able to network with each other, along with compa-nies in the exhibit hall. The conference offered a variety of topics, ranging from interviewing skills to information on blockchain technology. On November 2nd, during lunch IMA held their award ceremony recognizing various achievements of different students and student chapters. This year, our student chapter won the IMA Gold Award of Excellence and Outstanding Student Chapter. The second day closed with a very informative and moti-vational roundtable, titled Advice from the C-Suite: Lessons on Leadership, Learning, and Life. While each panelist journey differed, their message was the same. This message was to always present your best, and most important, don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Following the roundtable, IMA hosted a night social, with line dancing, school t-shirt contest, and a mechanical bull. Our chapter won the t-shirt contest along with 500-dollar prize for the accounting club. Attending the IMA Student Leader-ship Conference was a great experience.

While attend-ing the IMA Leadership Conference in

St. Louis, Dr. Ham-mon, Jacob Perdue, and Kalie Ferris toured the Federal Reserve. The tour started with a brief explanation of the Reserve’s history and overview of what the Reserve does. This was followed by in-teractive activities which provided exam-ples of economic choices. Afterward, CFO Marilyn Corona gave a brief lecture on things she has encoun-tered during her varied work ex-perience.
