President’s Message
Greetings accounting students, welcome to a new semester and a new year for Athens State University and the Accounting Club! Since our last newsletter the club has been engaged in several events, including charities like our canned food drive and angel tree. In early November we sent several of our officers to the IMA Student Leadership Conference where we visited different industries and listened to many interesting speakers about topics ranging from leadership to changes that will impact future accounting like blockchain. We also won the IMA Gold Award of Excellence and Outstanding Student Chapter due to our efforts towards being the best student chapter accounting club

we can be. Finally, in our final meeting for the fall semester we enjoyed our potluck party. This ongoing semester we hope to be just as successful and busy in providing the best opportunities for students in our club! We have several educational meetings
planned for the semester, ranging from leadership to new
accounting topics and information on the CPA and CMA. On February
28th for the first time we will take our club on the road to Crabtree,
Berger and Rowe, PC to witness professional accountants in action in
their working environment and learn what we need to be able
to succeed in the workplace. In March we plan to go to the Decatur
campus of Calhoun Community College and
promote our club to new accounting students. We also plan to have our
own cart in the Athens Mardi Gras Parade once again this year! I hope
everyone will have another successful semester and sign up for
the upcoming Accounting Club officer elections!

She discussed the CPA exam, advantages of having the certification and pointed out strategies students could use to to pass the exam. Karen shared about the Wiley CPA prep mate-rials available for aspiring CPAs. She drew names for free Wiley study materi-als. IMA Student Leadership Conference
Members of the Athens State University IMA Student Chapter Accounting Club attended the IMA Student Leadership Conference in St Louis, MO from November 1st - 3rd, 2018. During the conference, participants had the opportunity to attend one of the following industry tours; St. Louis Cardinals Bush Stadium, The Feder-al Reserve Bank of St. Louis, and Nestle Purina Headquarters. Following the industry tours, a Wel-come Reception was held where participants were able to network with each other, along with compa-nies in the exhibit hall. The conference offered a variety of topics, ranging from interviewing skills to information on blockchain technology. On November 2nd, during lunch IMA held their award ceremony recognizing various achievements of different students and student chapters. This year, our student chapter won the IMA Gold Award of Excellence and Outstanding Student Chapter. The second day closed with a very informative and moti-vational roundtable, titled Advice from the C-Suite: Lessons on Leadership, Learning, and Life. While each panelist journey differed, their message was the same. This message was to always present your best, and most important, don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Following the roundtable, IMA hosted a night social, with line dancing, school t-shirt contest, and a mechanical bull. Our chapter won the t-shirt contest along with 500-dollar prize for the accounting club. Attending the IMA Student Leader-ship Conference was a great experience.
While attend-ing the IMA Leadership Conference in
St. Louis, Dr. Ham-mon, Jacob Perdue, and Kalie Ferris toured the Federal Reserve. The tour started with a brief explanation of the Reserve’s history and overview of what the Reserve does. This was followed by in-teractive activities which provided exam-ples of economic choices. Afterward, CFO Marilyn Corona gave a brief lecture on things she has encoun-tered during her varied work ex-perience.
