CHAIRMAN’S CHAT
Not too long ago I was going on about how uninspired I was and how I had not
done any decent photography. It’s funny that when you are in that frame of
mind, you don’t think that things will change. You believe that things will carry
on the way they are and nothing will change. Why should it? Then, things did
begin to change for me. It started with a trip to the Drakensberg. Now I
have always found the Drakensberg quite difficult to photograph. I think it is
because the mountains are so vast that you can always only get a small section
of them in the photograph. The photograph is never as impressive as standing
there and looking at the mountains. Anyway, I did venture out early a few
mornings. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The photographs are still not that great I
have to admit, but I began to remember why I love photography. It’s not just
about taking a good picture. Yes, that is great, but it is so much more than
that. It is the whole experience. There I was, up early, before most people
were awake and experiencing the dew on the grass, the birds, the insects, the
little river making its way over the rocks and most of all the early morning
clouds creating ever changing scenes as they drifted across the tops of the
mountain peaks.
I spent a few hours taking pictures and then still got back only shortly after
my wife had woken up. So I hadn’t wasted any “together” time, which is always
a good thing! But somehow I felt rejuvenated. I was happy to do anything
that my wife wanted (within reason of course!) because I had done what I
wanted to do. I became inspired again.
A short while later, I had to go to Cape Town, on business. I only spent one
night there. I decided to take my camera with me. I decided to go to
Kommetjie in the evening to photograph the lighthouse there. Again it was a
wonderful experience. At the risk of sounding like I am bragging, I think that
I did get some great pics. I spent a good few hours there, until it got dark.
The guard did try to chase me away earlier but I pretended I couldn’t hear
him and he wasn’t concerned enough to walk to where I was.
But that’s not all. I also recently arranged a shoot with a pretty young lady.
It was hard work setting it up because I was looking for a particular theme.
It turned out really well. When she posted some of the photos on her
facebook page, she got some really positive comments. One photographer in
Page 3 of 28
particular, who I rate very highly, said that it was some of the best work she
had done.
So from being totally uninspired, I am now thoroughly enjoying my
photography. I hope that you are too. If not, then be patient, things change.
You may not see it coming and there may not be any obvious signs. Hang in
there!

RECOMMENDED PROCEDURE
1. Select Canvas (Frame) Size under the heading “Image” in Photoshop if you wish to add a
boarder to the image and make your adjustements. If you do not wish to add a boarder, go to
Step 2.
2. Select Image Size under the heading “Image” in Photoshop. Tick the following boxes: Scale
Styles, Constrain Proportions and Resample Image.
3. The maximum size of the image must not exceed 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels high.
4. When resizing a horizontal image (Landscape) enter 1920 pixels in the Width Box and the
vertical size will be adjusted automatically if you have ticked the “Resample Image” box. If
the vertical size is 1080 pixels or less, the resizing is correct. If the vertical adjusts to a value
more than 1080 pixels (say 1096 pixels) then adjust the vertical size to 1080 pixels and the
horizontal size will automatically reduce to below 1920 pixels if you have ticked the

the Width Box will change automatically to match the original image if you have ticked the
“Resample Image” box.
6. The maximum image data file size is 1,500Kilobytes in the JPEG format. Note that if a border
is added to the image, this must be added before resizing and reducing the file size to a
maximum of 1,500 Kilobytes to ensure that the image remains within the specified 1,500Kb.
7. It is recommended that the image be displayed in the sRGB Colour Profile. This can be
selected in the camera or changed in Photoshop under Edit/Convert to Profile.

9 Photo Composition Tips, As Seen in Photographs by Steve McCurry
Published on March 16, 2015 by Michael Zhang
Here’s a great video on photographic composition, created by The Cooperative of Photography using tips and photographs by legendary photojournalist Steve McCurry. Each of the 9 composition tips is illustrated with examples from McCurry’s impressive body of work. Here are the 9 tips covered in the video:
1. Rule of Thirds: Place points of interest on the intersections and important elements along the lines
2. Leading Lines: Use natural lines to lead eyes into the picture
Page 21 of 28
3. Diagonals: Diagonal lines create great movement
4. Framing: Use natural frames like windows and doors
Page 22 of 28
5. Figure to Ground: Find a contrast between subject and background
6. Fill the Frame: Get close to your subjects
7. Center Dominant Eye: Place the dominant eye in the center of the photo
Page 23 of 28
8. Patterns and Repetition: Patterns are aesthetically pleasing, but the best is when the pattern is interrupted
Page 24 of 28
9. Symmetry: Symmetry is pleasing to the eye
“Remember, the composition is important, but also rules are meant to be broken,” Steve McCurry says. “So the main point is to enjoy yourself while you’re photographing and photograph in your own way and your own style.”
You can find more photography content over in COOPH magazine and some neat photo gear in the COOPH online store.

HUMOUR
DISTRESS AT 18,000 FEET
An air traffic control tower suddenly lost communications with a small twin-engine aircraft.
A moment later, the tower landline rang and was answered by one of the employees.
The passenger riding with the pilot who lost communications was on a cellular phone and yelled "Mayday, mayday! The pilot had an instant and fatal
heart attack.
I grabbed his cell phone out of his pocket and he had told me before we took off he had the tower on his
speed dial memory. I am flying upside down at 18,000 feet and travelling at 180 mph. Mayday, mayday!!"
The employee in the tower had put him on speaker phone immediately.
"Calm down, we acknowledge you and we will guide you down after a few questions. The first thing is not
to panic, remain calm!”.
He began his series of questions.
Tower: "How do you know you are travelling at 18,000 feet??"
Aircraft: "I can see that it reads 18,000 feet on the dials in front of me".
Tower: "Okay, that is good, remain calm. How do you know you are travelling at 180 mph?”
Aircraft:
"I can see that it reads 180 mph on the dials in front of me".
Tower: "Okay, that is good. How do you know you're flying upside down?”
Aircraft: "Because the poo in my pants is sliding out of my collar."
