 Continuing the momentum from the highly successful maiden On-the-spot Build and Break Competition held in 2008, Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) in collaboration with the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) Malaysia Division sponsored by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia are pleased once again to organize Asia Pacific Universities Build and Break Competition 2011 amongst the civil and structural engineering students pursuing Civil Engineering Course in universities/colleges. This year the invitation is extended to some selected universities from Asia Pacific Countries. The Institution of Structural Engineers and its Malaysia Division The Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) is the world’s leading profess ional body for structural engineering with ov er 23,000 members in 105 countries around the world. It is a leading source of expertis e on all structural engineering and public safety issues in the built environment. The Institution was established in London in 1908 and is recognized internationally for the technical and professiona l competence of its members. Its image is one of s afety, efficiency and excellence both of its operations and in the standards of its members. The Institution qualifies its members by examinations that test professional competence in structural engineering design. The Malaysia Division was inaugurated in 2003 and is a society registered with the Registrar of Societies Malaysia. Our local membership totals 146 which comprise 12 FIStructE, 58 M IStructE, 5 AIStruct E, 1  AMIStructE, 46 Graduate members, and 24 Student members. It is governed by a committee of 13 members who meet bimonthly. It has a Memorandum of Understanding with the Institution of Engineers Malaysia where activities are jointly organized with them for the mutual benefits of both Institutions. The Department of Civil Engineering, Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) The Department of Civil Engineering, Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) is dedicated to develop UNITEN’s strong linkage s with the industry especially through its parent company, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB). The Department offers a full-time undergraduate program leading to the award of Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Honors). Postgraduate program offered includes Master of Civil Engineering and Doctor of Philosophy by research in the areas of structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, water resources engineering, environmental engineering, highway engineering and project management. The Department strives to be the leading civil engineering department in the country and to provide leadership in the field of civil engineering by focusing on technological innovations built upon the advances in basic knowledge. We work in partnership with corporations, government departments and other organizations to ensure that our work has the breadth and expertise necessary to tackle problems with economic, scientific and engineering dimensions. The Institution of Structural Engineers and its Malaysia Division

The Institution was established in London in 1908 and is recognized internationally for the technical andprofessional competence of its members. Its image is one of safety, efficiency and excellence both of itsoperations and in the standards of its members. The Institution qualifies its members by examinations that test

professional competence in structural engineering design.

Objectives

The objectives of the competition are:-

(i)  To develop creativity amongst the civil engineering students in structural design.(ii)  To apply knowledge and theory from the course study into practice.

Procedures

This competition is open to all students pursuing civil engineering course in Malaysia and some selected universities in ASIAPACIFIC Countries, preferably final year students who had completed the structural analysis and design subjects at the university.Each university is entitled to enter only one team for the competition. Each team shall comprise maximum five students.

There is no entry fee to enter this competition. IStructE Malaysia Division will provide the materials to build the model and lunch for all participating students for the competition. The participating universities shall arrange for their own transportation and logistics toattend this competition. For foreign participants, they are advised to check the visa and travel arrangements before entering thecountry and shall follow all rules and regulations by the authority.

The competition requires the teams to build on the spot, a structural model which shall have a clear span and clear headroom as

specified in the competition. Each team shall be given the same amount of building materials such as satay sticks, cardboards,strings, masking tapes etc. to build the model. The participating students shall use their creativity to build the model using thematerials given. No additional materials other than given by the competition will be allowed. Each team is given four hours to buildthe model.

Winning Criteria & Prizes

 At the end of the four hours, each team shall be judged as follows:

The model of each team will be subjected to a point load acting at a designated position until it fails. A large portion of the marks willbe given to the team whose model achieves the highest ratio of the failure load to the weight of the model. A portion of marks mayalso include the aesthetic appearance and structural viability. Other rules, regulations and judging criteria shall be made knownduring the day of the competition.

There will be three judges for the competition and they will be nominated by IStructE Malaysia Division. The decision of the judges isfinal and no appeal will be allowed.

The highest marks achieved by the team will be declared the winner. The second and third highest marks will be declared as thefirst runner-up and second runner-up.The prizes are:- Winning team RM 2000.00 + plaques

1st Runner-up RM 1500.00 + plaques2nd Runner-up RM 1000.00 + plaques

Notes for Participants from Universities in ASIA PACIFIC Countries

Entry into Malaysia is subject to rules and regulations by Custom and Immigration Department, which the participants mustobey. Please make your own travel and logistic arrangement. Recommended hotels to stay near UNITEN Campus are Residence Hotel (in the Campus compound), Marriot Putrajaya,Palm Garden Putrajaya and Equatorial Bangi (within 10 km radius).

Submission Date for Entries 

Local and some invited universities from ASIA PACIFIC Countries which are interested to participate in the competition shouldsubmit the names of their team members to the Organizing Committee either by post, fax or email before 22 August 2011.Notification for acceptance will be made by the Organizing Committee in September 2011.
