As we enter into the working part of the Auxiliary year, we reflect on how our actions and appearance reflect on the Coast Guard and the Coast Guard Auxiliary. You remember from the words of your swearing in ceremony: “As an Auxiliarist, you enjoy certain honors and privileges, among them, wearing the Auxiliary uniform and flying the Auxiliary Ensign. Wear the uniform neatly and correctly and fly the Blue Ensign proudly. Remember that your conduct reflects directly upon the image of both the Coast Guard and the Auxiliary.” As a help to all of us in applying the above words, use as an important reference, the “United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Manual, (COMDTINST M16790.1F)”. In this manual, refer to Chapter 10 on uniforms. Some helpful sections revolve around Figure 10-25, Figure 10-27, Figure 10-29, Figure 10-42, and Figure 10-44. Repeating thoughts from above, wearing the Auxiliary uniform neatly and correctly will enhance the image of both the Coast Guard and the Auxiliary. Jumping way ahead to our year end ceremony (the Change of Watch), the Flotilla 4th Cornerstone will be making plans now on when and where to hold this Change of Watch (COW). To help with these plans we are asking for your input or comments. Basically, we need to know if

you will attend a December 2008 COW, or a January 2009 COW. Will you attend a Friday dinner, or Saturday lunch, or Saturday dinner, or Sunday lunch, or Sunday dinner? Would you prefer live entertainment, or recorded music? Any other comments will be appreciated. We will continue with a guest speaker program until we hear your comments on the program. We also need your comments or thoughts on what you want or expect to get from the Auxiliary, and what the Staff and I can do to help you. In any case, I am asking all of you to be leaders by becoming involved in the Flotilla’s many programs. For members that need to participate in Specialized workshops, plan to attend the Division 3 Training Day workshops at the Pompano Beach Civic Center on Saturday March 1, 2008. An 8 hour Team Coordination Training program will be held on Saturday March 15, 2008. Coming up mid year is the National Safe Boating Week. All safety programs will be emphasized during this special week. I appreciate your efforts. Thank you.

Tom Thayer Vice Flotilla Commander [email protected] The Boca Raton Marine

Advisory Board continues to host the Lagoon Keepers 20 ft. pontoon boat. It is available to interested individuals to clean the various waterways in the Boca/Delray/Highland Beach area. We can use it for MSO Missions in the Coast Guard Auxiliary. This is done without orders and thus does not have to have qualified Coxswain and Crew. It can also be used for school, scout, church or family missions. It provides an opportunity to get on the water and help to preserve our marine environment. Please give me a call if you are interested. Ideal crew is 3 or 4 individuals. Lagoon Keepers is a non-profit organization that provides most of the support for our vessel. Let me know if you would like to be a supporting member of Lagoon Keepers. The Lagoon Keepers vessel is still being considered as a Lake Boca Raton Information boat on certain weekend days. This is the idea of this month’s guest speaker, Karen Akers. The

Auxiliary will be invited to participate in promoting boating safety, public education, etc. The progress of getting things through City channels can be painstakingly slow. We will keep you advised. “The more we have the more that we can do”. This means more interested and qualified members and more Auxiliary Facilities (Vessels). Please invite your friend, neighbor, boat club member, etc. to look us over. I think that we have fun and have an ever increasingly important mission. Till next month…….

Gail Edelman Public Education [email protected] Public Education – We had our first ABC class of the year with six students who all passed the

exam. Many thanks go to the instructors, Rick Celestino, Andrea Rutherfoord, Scott Ellington and Tony Quesada. Thanks also to the class aids, Jerry Edelman, Christie Colina and Fred Gless. Fred is a new member who is hoping to become our newest instructor and he comes to us with a lot of experience teaching boating safety in New York. All instructors should make plans to attend the Instructor’s Workshop on Feb., 9, 2008 at 09:00. This is a mandatory workshop in order to maintain the instructor’s qualifications. Anyone interested in becoming an instructor should attend. I will schedule an instructor’s class based on the amount of interest. Don Fisher AUXOP TRAINING [email protected] We have kicked off the first lesson in our new AUXSEA course.

Commander Tony did a great job defining nautical terms, comparing boat building materials, old and new, and comparing the 6 types of boat steerage systems. The only disappointment is that only 4 of the 31 members who have not taken this fundamentally important course attended. Come on people, did you really join the auxiliary to don a uniform once a month and come to a meeting? Of course not! You and I joined to become better boaters and to help others to do the same. However, the flotilla does not have the resources to teach courses on demand, so you need to jump on the opportunity to take them when they are available. This is the season for Seamanship, and small boat handling. You can easily catch up, covering the first chapter on your own, or with our help AUXSEA will not be offered again for some time. The last time it was offered was in 2006. So no more excuses, come to class on March 5th, and in a couple of months you can earn your “working on AUXOP ribbon”, or add another star to the one you have. .
