2019 YOUTH RALLY SCRIPT

CHRIST OR CULTURE: The Choice is Yours

SCOPE

A young high school senior named Jaden who is the product of a broken home finds himself wrestling with

the challenges of maintaining his popularity with friends. He finds himself an unlikely ally in PK, who is the

son of a Pastor. Jaden soon discovers that despite his own issues he is in the unique position to encourage

PK towards a better way of life. The story takes an interesting turn when Jaden takes a love interest in

PK’s sister Lindsey, who is also dealing with the peer pressure to be liked and noticed. They all eventually

find the answers they need as message of Christ is preached in the Crossover Baptist Church; a progressive

church with ministry geared towards Youth & Young Adults.

CAST of CHARACTERS

PK- musically talented and gifted son of a Pastor, who is thinks he is getting away with living a double

life, simply because people don’t suspect him of his wrongdoings.

JADEN- Mister Popularity to friends and peers. Football and baseball all-star from King High that comes

from a dysfunctional home.

BRYCE- PK and Jaden’s homeboy; a member of the crew.

RON- Another one of PK and Jaden’s homies who is also a member of the crew.

JADEN’S MOM- doing her best to raise Jaden and balance the dynamics of an abusive, alcoholic and

handicapped husband.

PASTOR PHONZ- Cool, down to earth and kind- hearted Pastor of the Crossover Church. PK and

Lindsey’s father.

LINDSEY- PK’s sister. Beautiful and bodied yet falls victim to the peer pressures of social media likes and

attention.

Dude…Those are the same clothes he had on yesterday!

Ron

Bryce you’re right, except for the fact that yesterday they weren’t wrinkled! What’s up with that Jay?

PK

Let me talk to them Jay. I got this one. [PK talks in a preacher type voice]

Now, we all know he is the football and baseball all-star at the school. And we also know the honeys are

throwing everything they got at him daily! So, can I get an AMEN?! Ok, so picture this [as he holds his

hand in the air and takes a selfie]

I believe he went over to some honey’s house and fell asleep there. When he woke up it was almost

morning so he had to jump out the window so he wouldn’t get caught by her parents! We all know how

he is a dedicated student, so he just headed straight to school and here we are… wrinkled in yesterday’s

clothes and all. Now, Jay, you know I am living vicariously through you since I am just a preacher’s kid

that can’t have fun, so please tell me that I’m right?

[They all four give each other a hand slap]

Jaden

Uh…well…you know…YEA! You’re right. What can a brother say?!

[Then the three guys all start to jump around and howl for Jaden and chant his name]

Jaden [speaking under his breath]

If only they knew the truth.

Guys check this out before the bell rings. Have yall seen that new Anthony Brown video on YouTube? It’s

pretty dope…watch this. [They gather around his ipad and begin to dance]

Jaden

Man chill out! Y’all too churchy for me. [The bell rings for class]

PK

Thanks guys we’ll meet after school.

No can do. I have a dentist appointment today.

Ron

Me either I’ve got to work today.

PK

Well Jay, it’s just me and you kid.

Jaden

Cool, that’s a plan.

PK

Meet me at my car after school. It’s parked by the fence at the end of the parking lot. I don’t want

anybody hitting my whip. Oh, by the way, I might be skipping 6th period. There’s a lil chica that wants to

meet me in the locker room…you know that’s everybody’s honeycomb hideout!

Bryce

Yea man…but remember you’re not everybody.

[PK shakes his head and waves Bryce off. They all walk away from center stage to the right]

SCENE 2- FAMILY HOME

[PK and Jaden are clearing the dishes from the table]

Jaden

Hey PK…thanks for inviting me to dinner. Your mom is a great cook! Almost as great as my mom. Plus

sitting across from one of the finest girls in school makes it even better!

PK

I’ll remember to tell my mom how her you how love her cooking. And as for my sister…finest girl in the

school? Dude you are tripping, so we’ll keep that just between us.

Jaden

So, is this the norm for your family eating together every day?

PK

Yup, everyday my mom demands it.

Jaden

Bro, you don’t know how lucky you are to have your whole family sitting down eating together every

day. What I wouldn’t give to have just one day eating as a family at my place. Or even having a full meal

for that matter.

PK

Wow, I guess I never thought about dinner like that before. I just thought all families had dinner

together.

Jaden

I ‘gotta be honest with you, when you asked me over for dinner, I really wanted to say no because I

knew your dad is a Pastor at the Crossover Church. I didn’t want him preaching to me about God and

everything. But it wasn’t at all that bad. He was so down to earth laughing and joking. Who would have

thought? Except when he asked me to come to the Young Adult Bible Study. What’s it called again?

PK

RESURGE!

Jaden

Oh yea…RESURGE! But when I said I would think about it he just smiled and said, ‘well if you come, we

will be so glad to see you.’ He didn’t push or pressure me at all. I guess I’m the only one with a sick

minded man for a dad.

PK

Oh wow! Sorry bro…I didn’t know.

No sweat, no one knows. That’s why I was all messed up this morning; thanks for saving me today with

the boys.

PK

I could tell on your face that something was very wrong. And besides I couldn’t let you go out like that.

We all boys but we all know that Ron’s mouth can be a little reckless. Let’s just say you owe me one.

Jaden

Dude, I spent last night at my second home, the bus station. Not some female’s house. That’s why I have

on the same clothes from yesterday. My dad is an alcoholic so when he has his ‘episodes’ as my mom

calls them, he gets very violent and mom makes me leave to stay safe.

PK

Wow, that’s crazy. What can I do to help?

Jaden

Nothing. She won’t leave him; she says she feels sorry for him because he’s handicapped. She just wants

me to get good grades and graduate so I can go to college and get as far away from him as I can.

PK

I hear that. So, what about accepting my dad’s offer to come to Bible Study? Then you can spend the

night here to get away for a while.

Jaden

PK, I don’t need your pity bro, even though there is something I’m confused about. How is it that you

can do all the things that you do and keep a straight face with your parents?

PK

That’s for me to know and you to find out. I’m just a preacher’s kid…so it’s easy to get away with.

Jaden

Really PK? In other words, selling weed is ok because you’re a preacher kid?

PK

Yes, that the preachers kid code. You know how you hear all the old people say, ‘leave him alone. He’s

the Pastor’s son.’ Then they look the other way until we get caught. Then they’re the first ones to say, ‘I

knew it! All preachers’ kids are bad. They just can’t help it.

[PK and Jaden get an iPhone alert. They look at their phones]

Jaden

I guess this pic is cool with you then huh? Because it’s cool with me!

Jaden

Well, she got my vote! If me and you wasn’t boys I would… [PK steps close to Jaden’s face] but I respect

the crew code.

PK

Alright then. Now, let me send her a text to take that crap down right now!

Jaden

Oh, now you mad? What’s up with that? Is the preacher’s kid code only for the sons and not the

daughters to do stupid things?

PK

Really dude? She is still my sister and the FAMILY code goes way deeper than the PREACHER’S KID code.

Jaden

Well I guess your message worked… she just deleted the pic.

PK

Yea for now. No telling what she is going to do next. Now, getting back to you spending the night.

Jaden

Like I said, I don’t need your pity.

PK

It’s not even like that. You are my boy and there is nothing I wouldn’t do for any of ‘yall. Now let’s go get

your clothes and get ready for church.

Jaden

Man, I don’t have church clothes. And I don’t know if I can handle the creepy organ music and the

preacher having an asthma attack. [Whooping preacher voice] And…God said…he coming in a Honda!

Then He diiiied!

PK

Dude, trust me, my church is nothing like that. The music is not olgy folgy, the preaching is down to

earth and on a level that we can relate to and best of all, you can come dressed down. No one has to be

suited and booted to worship God. Besides all of that traditional churchy stuff is the main reason why

it’s hard to keep millennials interested in church.

Jaden

Don’t you need to ask your parents?

Good evening everyone, and welcome to the RESURGE here at the Crossover Church. I’m glad to see so

many of you out tonite. I’m going to jump right into tonight’s message. I wouldn’t dare let ‘yall get

bored. Tonight, I want to talk about, ‘Christ or Culture: The Choice Is Yours.’ Now I already know what

‘yall are thinking. No, I am not here to tell you what you can and can’t do in church. I’m sure you already

know that because you’ve been hearing those type of things all your lives. So, grab your smart devices

and let’s go to John 3:16.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him

should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Now jump over to Romans 5:8

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners. Christ died for us...”

I want you to think about the stuff you would do for your friend. I hear this statement all the time, “You

my ride or die.” Well ladies and gentlemen that’s just how God feels about us. There is nothing your God

wouldn’t do for you. He is the real ride or die. Actually, He DID send his son to die for you. So, don’t you

think you should feel the same way about him? No, He doesn’t expect you to die for Him physically, but

to your old self, your bad habits and your fleshly ways. All God is asking is that you live your lives in such

a way that is God-Glorifying and Christ Centered.

1. God Glorifying means that in everything you do and say, God is pleased.

2. Christ Centered means that you show the love of Christs’ example to everyone you meet.

Oftentimes living this way is not popular to those around us. There are many times where we are tempted

to go with the crowd and to do what everyone else is doing. But remember, as children of God, you are

not everybody else. Don’t get me wrong. You don’t have to change who you are to serve God. I take my

wife out all the time for dinner and dancing. I love all types of music not just gospel.

God gave His son to us for us to have everlasting life; not to keep us in a place of unhappiness just because

culture tell us this. Culture means the customs, the norms and social institutions. Culture is also a

reflection of what is popular. Many times, serving God is not popular. But because God loves us so very

much, he gives us the freewill to decide between following Christ and following culture; and we must

choose to love him in return. Now let’s have some questions about what you just heard.

Jaden [Raises his hand; when Pastor acknowledges him, he stands up]

Pastor Phonz, you say that God loves us, then why does he allow people to hurt us?

Pastor Phonz

Great question. You see Jaden, God is not the author of evil, Satan is, and anyone who allows evil to

enter their heart must know that is not of God or Christ. But, let me just say this. When someone hurts

you, you must pray for them no matter how hard it is. Culture says, if you hurt me, then I hurt you back.

But Christ says, love your enemies, and pray for them that despitefully use you. I want to extend an

invitation for you to come to the altar. [Music begins] If there is anyone here who wants to know more

about this Christ, let me pray for you.

[As others come forward, Jaden stands and walks to the front and kneels at the altar]

[Pastor Phonz]

Let’s pray. God our Father we bow our heads and open our hearts to you. We pray that You will teach us

Your word and Your truth. So many have come seeking favor in your sight. We pray for all the people

that have come tonight. Whatever they’re going through I ask that you make way for each one of them.

God forgive us of our sins in Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Hey PK, I’m going step out and call my Mom.

Hello?

Jaden

Hi, mom you ok?

Mom

I’m good son, what about you? It’s kind of late, is everything ok?

Yes ma’am, everything is ok. Mom, I went to church tonight and I really enjoyed it. I never knew church

could be so cool, so refreshing and so down to earth! It was Bible-based, and it was spirit filled! I think it

might be a start to dealing with my feelings for Dad. I called because I want us to come to church

together on Sunday if that’s ok with you.

Mom

Now, son trying to get your dad to go to church is like me pulling his teeth out…that is just not going to

happen.

Jaden

No. not him. Just us…you and me. Before God can fix dad, we need God to work on us, then maybe it

will spill over to him. Just promise me that you’re going to pray for you, dad and me. I believe that God

will answer our prayers. I will be home tomorrow and Sunday I want us to attend church together.

Mom

You’re serious about this aren’t you Son?

Jaden

Yes ma’am, I’m so serious.

Mom

Then Sunday we will be in church.

Jaden

Thanks mom. I’ll see you tomorrow. Love you…bye.

Mom

Bye son. Be safe. I love you too.

[PK walks up behind Jaden and scares him]

PK

You okay man? [Jaden holds his hand to his heart]

Jaden

Man, what are trying to do, give me a heart attack?

PK [Laughing]

No not at all. You alright?

Jaden

Yea

Yea bro, this where I do my best song writing, arranging and packaging up these trees to sell.

Jaden

PK listen… you are the most talented guy I have ever met. You can make a hit song out of “Mary Had a

Little Lamb” and make it sound awesome. Everybody thinks and says that you’re going to be the next

Kirk Franklin.

PK

[Holds up his hand and hits his chest]

True dat, True dat.

Jaden

Then why are you taking a chance on going to jail by selling weed?

PK

Man, I told you it’s the PK code.

Jaden [Disgusted]

Man forget that dumb code. This is your life we’re talking about! I think this is what the Pastor meant by

Christ or culture.

PK

Jay, I know you’re not preaching to me when this is the first time you have ever stepped foot in church.

Plus, you’ve be listening to my dad way too much.

Jaden

You may be right, but when he was talking it made so much sense. If Christ could go so far as to die for

us, He should be the one we’re riding and dying for. It’s not about what the world wants from us…but

what Christ wants from us. That’s what’s most important. Plus, something happened to me when your

Dad prayed at the altar tonight. It was as if he was just praying for me. When he touched me, I felt a

warm feeling inside? I can’t explain it.

PK [Preaching voice]

Bible says it just like fire shut up in your bones!

Dude stop playing! At the table last night your Dad said that everything happens for reason. God has a

hand in everything we do. So, what if I am supposed to be here to convince you to make a change right

now, before it’s too late.

PK

What? Why? You aren’t even saved?

Jaden

You are absolutely right; I am not saved. I really don’t even know what that’s means.

Pastor Phonz

Well my son you’ve landed in the right back yard this night.

[Both boys jump in surprise]

PK

Dad! How long have you been standing there?

Pastor Phonz

Long enough. Now, Jaden I want to lift your hands and answer these questions. Do you believe that

Jesus died for your sins? And on the third day rose from the grave with all power in his hands? Do you

believe that love will always cover a multitude of sins?

Jaden

Yes, sir I do.

Pastor Phonz

Then Jaden, you are saved.

Jaden

That’s funny I don’t feel any different.

Pastor Phonz

You will when you least expect it. Something smells funny out here. I hope ‘yall a’int out here drinking

that wine and smoking them twiggs…

[Pastor hugs him and PK then walks away]

cure distillery and let them take care of it. We will just leave it at the doorstep tonight…no one has to

know.

PK

That is a lot of money to just give away.

Jaden

I bet…but look at it this way. You’re helping sick people with their pain. Plus, we will get all that money

back and more when you get your first record deal.

PK

I’m going to hold you to that bro.

Jaden

Well if that doesn’t work out then when I sign my football and baseball contracts, I’ll pay you every cent

back.

PK

Now that a deal! [They slap five and start to walk away]

Jaden

Hold up PK… there is just one more thing we need to do and that is save your sister from herself. I want

to date her.

PK

Are you crazy? I know your reputation…and did you forget the CREW code?

Jaden

No, I have not forgotten the crew code, but the reputation is fake. Bro, I’m a virgin and I plan to stay

that way until I’m married.

PK [Surprised]

Naaw?! Bro, what about all the stories with the ladies?

Jaden

YOU all made up those stories and I never tried to deny them because it made me look good in all the

fella’s eyes and very popular with the ladies. Again, another classic example of…

PK and Jaden [together]

[Jaden lifts head toward heaven]

Jaden

Ok God, I know I have never spent any time with you, and I really don’t know you. But I have been told

that you know me, and you love me. So please give me the words to say to Lindsey to change her spirit

and make her mine.

[As Jaden paces nervously back and forth, Lindsey walks in]

Lindsey

Hey Jaden…PK told me you wanted to see me. Why would the captain of the football and baseball team

want to see me? And exactly what is this about? I was surprised seeing you at church tonight. What is

really going on Jaden?

Jaden

Honestly Lindsey, I don’t really know myself.

Lindsey

What?

Jaden

One minute I’m going through some things at home with my family and the next thing I know I end up

here and your father is praying for me in your back yard and I got saved.

Lindsey

Saved?! Not you, Mister popularity of King High; the boy that every girl wants to get with. Really? Shut

up!

Lindsey listen to me. Girl I have not ever slept with anyone. Those are all lies that guys make up to seem

like we have it going on, but that really isn’t me at all. Just between me and you when you sent out

those pictures on social media that really isn’t you either. I mean, you fine and all, thicka than a snicka…

but why do you want the world to see you and get the wrong impression of you?

Lindsey

What I do with my body and pictures isn’t any of your business. Why do you care anyway? I’m really just

trying to build up my likes and followers. It’s what everybody does.

Jaden

Yea, but you’re not everybody. You come from a good Christian home, and you know better. So, what’s

more important? What Christ wants or what the culture wants?

Lindsey

OMG…Boy you have been listening to my dad way too much!

Jaden

Maybe so. But to answer your question, because I am crazy about you and I don’t want anyone looking

at what I asked God for…ok?!

Lindsey

You can have any girl in school what makes me so special?

Jaden

I don’t know, but you are. The truth is we have a crew code that wouldn’t let any of us date you because

you are PK’s sister.

Lindsey

What?! And all this time I thought something was wrong with me because nobody wanted to ask me

out. I ought to kill him! [She screams] PK get out here right now!

Jaden

Lindsey! Don’t be mad with your brother. He is supposed to look out for his little sister. That’s the way

of the world. You showed yourself all over the internet because the world says this is how you get

noticed right? So, let just call it even.

[He put his hand out for Lindsey to shake with him]

Lindsey

Ok, I guess you’re right. Am I really beautiful to you?

My one and only. [They hug and Jaden looks up toward heaven] Thank you God.

[PK walks back into the scene, Jaden and Lindsey jump]

Hey, you two what’s going on out here?

Lindsey

I should smack your face after what you done. Crew code says no one can date your sister huh? Boy

please.

PK

I didn’t think anyone was good enough until now and besides…that is what big brothers do.

Lindsey

You are Impossible, but I still love you anyway!

[She hugs and walks away]

PK

Well while you were out here being Mackavelli, I went and dropped off the weed sacks. Jaden, it took all

I could because that was a lot of money. Stacks on racks…

Jaden

Cool…that’s what’s up. Everything is going to be fine…I just have that feeling. I’m going to bed now…

you coming?

PK

I’ll come in shortly. Good night man. [Jaden leaves and music starts]

Well God I’m going to do this your way instead of the world’s way…please help me. I’m gonna do my

[Scene opens with Praise and Worship]

[While praise and worship is going on Jaden and his mom enter. They go and sit next to PK, his mom

and sister]

PK

Hi man…so glad you came with your mom.

[He shakes PK’s hand and hugs his mom]

Jaden

Me too! Mom I want to introduce you to my girlfriend Lindsey this is PK’s sister.

Pastor Phonz

Good Morning church I’m so happy to see all of you this morning. I have to say God has answered my

prayer. I see my son’s good friend Jaden is worshiping with us and for that reason I just want to give God

a hand clap of praise, Amen. This week we had Jaden over to the house and we had an interesting talk

about what Christians should and shouldn’t do, he shared with me that he feels that is why young people

are just afraid to become Christians; for fear of what they can and cannot do. So, I’m going to pick up

where I left off on Wednesday night discussing “Christ over Culture. Keeping with that thought grab your

smart devices and head to John chapter 15 and verse 19. And it reads:

‘If ye were of the world, the world would love his own; but because ye are not of the world, but I have

chosen you out of the world therefore the world hateth you.’

Now there is where most people stop; they feel that they don’t want to be hated so I’m just going to keep

on doing what everybody else is doing. But you must read on because God commands that we love one

another. Once you learn how to love yourself loving your fellowman comes easy. Culture tells us if you

love me, I love you back. If you hate me, then I hate you back. But Christ tells us to love everyone. God

gave his son for all of us because he loves us much, even when we don’t treat him the same. So why can’t

we love each other no matter what. I bet if you start to treat your enemy as your friend, with love you’ll

experience a change in them, or they will leave you alone.

[Music starts]

Now is a great time if anyone wants to be saved or to join the Crossover Church. Here is a place that not

only will you experience Christs’ love, but love for one another as sisters and brothers IN Christ. I also

want to make an appeal if there is anyone here who says I’ve been following the way of the world for way

too long. Doing what is popular with the culture, instead of what is pleasing to Christ. You too can come.

Is there anyone who will say yes to the Lord today? Will you say yes?

[Jaden and his mom stand and join the church as others come and embrace to welcome them.

Eventually, Jaden comes forward and finally Lindsey too. Mom, comes at the end to complete the

scene at the altar]

Welcome both of you. Lindsey and PK, I love you and thank God for you too. This is the greatest

decision that all of you will ever make.

From time to time we all need to be born again. And Christ loves us so much that He makes it simple for
