GeneralDescriptionThe Model TY-FRFS, TY-FS Special, and TY-FS, Upright and Pendent, Flat

Spray Sprinklers described in this datasheet are intended for installation inaccordance with CEA 4001 SprinklerSystems Planning and Installation orEN12845 Automatic Sprinkler Sys-tems - Design, Installation and Mainte-nance, as applicable. They produce aflatter spray pattern than standardspray sprinklers enabling them to beused with lower clearance above thesuspended open ceilings and in racks.

As necessary the 80K and 115K, FlatSpray Sprinklers may be outfitted withguards, shie lds, or guards wi thshields. The guards may be used inareas that make thesprinklers suscep-tible to mechanical or physical dam-age, whereas the shields may be usedto help prevent the sprinklers from be-ing wetted (cold soldered) from waterspray of higher elevation sprinklers.Table A provides a detailed matrix ofthe allowable combinations.

The Model TY-FRFS with its 3 mmdiameter heat sensitive bulb elementis rated quick response, the Model TY-FS Special with its 4 mm diameter heatsensitive bulb element is rated specialresponse, and the Model TY-FS withits 5 mm diameter heat sensitive bulb

    element is rated standard responseA.

CEA 4001 Sprinkler Systems Plan-ning and Installation and EN12845Automatic Sprinkler Systems - De-sign, Installation and Maintenance

permits flat spray sprinklers to be usedin concealed spaces, suspended openceilings, and in racks.

WARNINGSModel TY-FRFS, TY-FS Special, andT Y- FS S pr in kl er s, a s w el l a s guard/shield accessories, describedherein must be installed and main-tained in compliance with this docu-ment, as well as with the applicablestandards recognized by the Approvalagency, in addition to the standards ofany other authorities having jurisdic-tion. NOTESDo not install any bulb type sprinkler ifthe bulb is cracked or there is a loss ofliquid from the bulb. With the sprinklerheld horizontally, a small air bubbleshould be present. The diameter of theair bubble is approximately 1/16 inch(1,6 mm) for the 135F/57C to 3/32inch (2,4 mm) for the 360F/182Ctemperature ratings.

A leak tight 1/2 inch NPT sprinkler jointshould be obtained with a torque of 7to 14 ft.lbs. (9,5 to 19,0 Nm). A maxi-mum of 21 ft. lbs. (28,5 Nm) of torquemay be used to install sprinklers with1/2 NPT connections. A leak tight 3/4inch NPT sprinkler joint should be ob-tained with a torque of 10 to 20 ft.lbs.(13,4 to 26,8 Nm). A maximum of 30ft.lbs. (40,7 Nm) of torque is to be used

to install sprinklers with 3/4 NPT con-nections. Higher levels of torque maydistort the sprinkler inlet and causeleakage or impairment of the sprinkler.

Do not attempt to make-up for insuffi-cient adjustment in the escutcheonplate by under- or over-tightening thesprinkler. Readjust the position of thesprinkler fitting to suit.

Step 1. Pendent sprinklers are to beinstalled in the pendent position, andupright sprinklers are to be installed inthe upright position.

Step 2. With pipe thread sealant ap-plied to the pipe threads, hand tighten

the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting.

Step 3. Tighten the sprinkler into thesprinkler fitting using only the W-Type6 Sprinkler Wrench (Ref. Figure 10).With reference to Figures 1, 2, and 3the W-Type 6 Sprinkler Wrench is tobe applied to the wrench flats.

    SPRINKLER WITH GUARD

With reference to Figure 4, the ModelG1 Guard must be installed as follows:

    S t e p 1 . The G1 Guard i s to be

mounted on the sprinkler after thesprinkler has been installed in accord-ance with the Sprinklers Only sub-section.

Step 2. With the Clips loose, firstspread the two halves of the SprinklerGuard just enough to pass by thesprinkler deflector from the side. Then, once again spread the two halves ofthe Sprinkler Guard just enough topass over the sprinkler thread reliefportion of the sprinkler. (Refer to Fig-ures 2 and 3.)

Step 3. With the Sprinkler Guard posi-tioned on the thread relief portion ofthe sprinkler, as applicable, engagethe Clips and then slide the Clips untilthey seat against the Base to completethe installation as shown in Figure 4.

To help assist with the sliding of theClips, the Guard Installation Tool maybe used as shown in Figure 9. In addi-

tion, pliers can be used to facilitate thefinal seating of he Clips.

NOTESThe Clips must seat against the Basein order to be considered fully seated

and in order to complete the installa-tion.

The G1 may be located in any positionrelative to the sprinkler frame arms.

    SPRINKLER WITH SHIELD

With reference to Figures 5, 6, 7, or 8,the Model H1 or Model H2 Shield mustbe installed as follows:
