No visible glue lines, no need for hot melt adhesive, increasedproduction quality and greater productivity are just some of theadvantages offered by Döllken’s Fusion-Edge. The development of

the new laser application process for narrow surface coating meant thatthere was a need for new edging technology - achieved by Döllken withthe development of Fusion-Edge that creates a seamless union of edgeand panel - without hot melt adhesive. The development has alreadybeen issued with the M Technology Award by iF Design, Hanover.

The technical brilliance of Fusion-Edge is concentrated in thefunctional layer. Döllken’s development engineers have succeeded inensuring perfect compatibility with the customer’s lasers and Fusion-Edge, which offers the best initial adhesion combined with a low energyrequirement when compared to other products on the market. Powerfluctuations that are difficult and complex to adjust to by the processorusing new laser settings are unknown when using quality products fromDöllken. This ongoing production and application support is a directresult of the intensive testing of Fusion-Edge carried out on Döllken’sown laser edgeband machine. Döllken is the world’s first edgebandmanufacturer to have its own laser edgeband machine. It is used forprocess monitoring and for the determination of performanceparameters.

Laser technology has been in use for over two years by customers. The straight line edgebander (KAM) for rectangular components hasbeen running smoothly throughout this time and users report goodprocessing and a flawless look. This technology is now available forworking centres (BAZ), making it ideal for the office furnitureindustry. Laser BAZ machines are equipped with a diode laser and aresimilar to KAM machines but due to the increased complexity interms of required laser power, joint quality and flexibility, Döllken haschosen to concentrate on the proven PP Premium quality for Fusion-Edge for the BAZ.

The co-extruded Fusion-Edge in 28 by 3mm size has a very highinitial adhesion coupled with good flexibility that ensures that tight radiican be realised. In experiments with machine manufacturers, externalradii of 30mm at speeds of 3-4m/min were achieved.

Fusion-Edge can be ordered in quantities as small as just one roll. TheInstant Edgeband Program contains the most popular designs. Forprocessors using small to medium batch sizes it is now possible tocombine standard ABS edges with Fusion-Edge ABS Premium. Thecustomer can order edgebands in any size, colour or embossing andcombine the production of standard products with the laser edge variety.

SUPERMATTSENSATION

Döllken has underlined its pioneering role in the field of edgeband innovationwith a new effect that offers exciting new possibilities for contemporaryfurniture design. Supermatt is the world’s first nearly scratch resistant super

matt surface for thermoplastic edgebands made especially for PP. Matt surfaces arenow very much on trend after many years of domination by high gloss.

Based on the latest technology, Döllken has created a near perfect surface withextreme scratch or marking resistance. This superior surface feature gives theprocessors trouble free production and the customer a durable piece of furniture.Döllken has placed particular emphasis on snag free production so the throughputfigures of end users should show an improvement, even in super matt.

In addition to the superioroptical and mechanical propertiesof the coating, the newSupermatt surface also impresseswith its tactile, velvety feel, whichis similar to soft touch coatings. The Supermatt surface is subjectto strict quality controls and isavailable as PP edgebands and PPFusion Edge, both meeting thestrict standards of the furnitureindustry and especially kitchenmanufacturers

The robust qualities ofSupermatt make it ideal for use

by kitchen manufacturers.

The surface is highly scratch resistant.

The use of rustic woodgrain designs withfeatures such as knots, cracks and saw cutsdemonstrates the trend towards the naturallook. This is clearly seen in the new H3753ST22 Country Montana Larch, a nextgeneration softwood design that could beconsidered a modern alternative to pine.Natural material such as metal and stone arealso growing in popularity. F274 ST9 LightConcrete demonstrates this trend and is arealistic interpretation of concrete, ideal forcreating urban or industrial style interiors.

Texture is also increasingly important as the trend to usemore natural elements and to utilise texture to createcontrast with solid colours continues. This is demonstratedby the inclusion of new textures such as ST10 Authenticwhich is a realistic rough matt finish for wood and materialreproductions and ST18 Waveline – a new horizontaltexture that adds new levels of depth to solid colours.

Imperfections, especially in woodgrains, that would previously beseen as faults are now fashionable as designers seek a moreauthentic look. The variation in colour demonstrated in these new, more natural designs, allows them to work harmoniously withnatural solid colours. With mix and match still very much a trendthis creates more choice and individuality for the consumer.H3700 ST10 Natural Pacific Walnut is a new, highly realistic walnutreproduction with an authentic, natural character that is perfectfor this trend.

ST18 Waveline used with new solid colours such asW1000 Premium White.

DESIGNGOES NATURAL

Elements from nature continue to be a sourceof inspiration for design ideas within thehome as the use of natural woodgrains,

materials and solid colours becomes increasinglypopular. These trends are reflected in the Zoom2012-2013 collection from Egger. Ground-breaking advances have been made to boost thequality and realism of Egger décors, offering amore competitive and low maintenance alterativeto solid wood and real wood veneer products.

Hearts of oak…Trojan PA (left) has a warm golden brown colour with a pearlelement, giving added vitality to the finished look. This modern, fresh oak is an intricate design with subtle planking, fine woodticking and precise detailing, bringing depth and variety to theoverall effect. The design is finished with a new wood touchemboss, giving a realistic natural effect.

Luan Oak Tobacco (right) has a natural looking three-dimensional crosshatched design embellished with a saw cutemboss. Large planked cathedrals add structure to finely grainedsections which alternate with stripes and gentle growth rings.

Shown here with Luan Oak Tobacco is Mountain LarchCappuccino P, a deep embossed linear textured design.Restrained planks separate alternating sections of bi-directionalgraining, creating movement within the design. This décor willsuit a variety of different furniture styles and rooms includingbedrooms, living areas and kitchens.

Something specialThe new Moulins design is reminiscent of a concrete structure and has a

two-colour square print. Given its very subtle printed design, the finish canalso be used as a pseudo solid colour. The natural grey makes it suitable for

combining with various plain shades.Cobra is a fantasy design that picks up on the current trend towards

irregular stripes and geometric patterns. The design is modern andcontrasting. It is most suitable for combination with the three colours that

feature within the design - greys, coffees and blues all work well.
