Five Things to Teach Your Children

Our God gives us great guidance concerning things that really matter

• It should be a natural concern for parents to give their children the best upbringing.

• Societies have vastly different views on this. Some have discarded the home. (Rom 1:30-31 KJV; Deut 18:9-10; 2 Kgs 16:2-3)


• Romans 1:30-31 KJV - Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:


• Deuteronomy 18:9-10 - " When you come into the land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominations of those nations. 10 "There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer,


• 2 Kings 16:2-3 - Ahaz was twenty years old when he became king, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem; and he did not do what was right in the sight of the LORD his God, as his father David had done. 3 But he walked in the way of the kings of Israel; indeed he made his son pass through the fire, according to the abominations of the nations whom the LORD had cast out from before the children of Israel.


• A young man was working a puzzle. A boy was on one side and the country was on the other. “If I get the boy put together right, the country will be ok!”

• A group of historians spoke recently on CSPAN. All expressed shock at the rapidly changing morals in the country. (Prov 14:34; Gen 15:16)


• Proverbs 14:34 - Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a reproach to any people.


• Genesis 15:16 - "But in the fourth generation they shall return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete."


• The church began during a time of great wickedness in Roman culture.

• Even amidst persecution and social ridicule Christians were able to instill faith in their children and see a rapid growth of the church.

• Consider some basic truths each generation must teach in the home.

Respect for authority

• You cannot have a relationship with God without respect. (Deut 6:24-25; 7:9-11).


• Deuteronomy 6:24-25 - 'And the LORD commanded us to observe all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, that He might preserve us alive, as it is this day. 25 'Then it will be righteousness for us, if we are careful to observe all these commandments before the LORD our God, as He has commanded us.'


• Deuteronomy 7:9-11 - "Therefore know that the LORD your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments; 10 "and He repays those who hate Him to their face, to destroy them. He will not be slack with him who hates Him; He will repay him to his face.


• 11 "Therefore you shall keep the commandment, the statutes, and the judgments which I command you today, to observe them.


• With this basic truth as a foundation a man who fears God will also show respect in many different human relationships.

• Many are teaching a very different “god than revealed in the Bible. Many believe in a “god” that has spoken on almost nothing! (2 Cor 11:3-4)


• 2 Corinthians 11:3-4 - But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. 4 For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted -- you may well put up with it!


• Respect for governmental authority. (Rom 13:1-2; 1 Pt 2:13-14)


• Romans 13:1-2 - Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves.


• 1 Peter 2:13-14 - Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake, whether to the king as supreme, 14 or to governors, as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those who do good.


• Should we only respect a government we agree with?

• What was the response of the early church to governmental persecution?

• We must respect, obey and pray for all of those in authority over us. We must disobey our government when it goes against God’s law. (Acts 5:28-29)


• Acts 5:28-29 - saying, "Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this Man's blood on us!" 29 But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: "We ought to obey God rather than men.


• Where does this respect begin? In the home, at school, dealing with police officers and at work!

• Parents your real attitude will be revealed and transmitted to your children!

• Respect for brothers and sisters in Christ.


• The Lord commands us to have a certain attitude towards all Christians! (1 Pt 1:22; Rom 14:10, 15, 19)


• 1 Peter 1:22 - Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart,


• Romans 14:10 - But why do you judge your brother? Or why do you show contempt for your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.


• Romans 14:15 - Yet if your brother is grieved because of your food, you are no longer walking in love. Do not destroy with your food the one for whom Christ died.


• Romans 14:19 - Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another.


• You should respond decisively to any disrespect towards Bible class teachers.

• Those who lead should be given respect. (Heb 13:17; 1 Thess 5:12-13)


• Hebrews 13:17 - Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.


• 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 - And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, 13 and to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. Be at peace among yourselves.


• A young girl tried to “teach” her boyfriend by complaining about Christians.

• Respect cannot be learned when bitterness is planted in the heart. This is why some lose their young. (Deut 29:18-19)


• Deuteronomy 29:18-19 - "so that there may not be among you man or woman or family or tribe, whose heart turns away today from the LORD our God, to go and serve the gods of these nations, and that there may not be among you a root bearing bitterness or wormwood


• 19 "and so it may not happen, when he hears the words of this curse, that he blesses himself in his heart, saying, 'I shall have peace, even though I follow the dictates of my heart' -- as though the drunkard could be included with the sober.


• Parents can follow their children in departing from the Lord and His people.

How to worship God

• It is difficult for a child to seek and meditate on God when he lives in a videogame world. (Heb 11:6)

• Hebrews 11:6 - But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

• As parents you can give your children the faith that you possess. (2 Tim 1:5)

• 2 Timothy 1:5 - when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also.

• It is a great blessing when your child begins to turn to scripture and pray because he needs it and has learned to do so.

• Public worship is a time for learning.• From the youngest of age there are things

where we can involve our children.• Putting an emphasis on being at every

service teaches has an enormous impact.

How to work with others

• There are basic things necessary to establishing any relationship.

• Putting others ahead of self. • Honesty.• Learning how to listen.• Compassion.


• The kind of relationships they form will determine their future.

• How to give anger over unjust treatment to God. (Mt 5:44-48)


• Matthew 5:44-48 - "But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, 45 "that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust


• 46 "For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 "And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so? 48 "Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.


• The next generation will be under greater pressure in these areas.

• If our children let bitterness rule their hearts all will be lost. (Eph 4:26-27)


• Ephesians 4:26-27 - "Be angry, and do not sin": do not let the sun go down on your wrath, 27 nor give place to the devil.

How to make faith your own

• How can a young person stand in an ungodly society? Consider Daniel. (Dan 1:8)


• Daniel 1:8 - But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.


• Many laugh at applications concerning “external” things.

• Men of faith know that discernment must be taught and will bring great blessings! (Heb 4:12; 5:14)


• Hebrews 4:12 - For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.


• Hebrews 5:14 - But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.


• The discerning young person will pay a heavy price in the social circles of the world. (1 Pt 4:3-4, 12-14)


• 1 Peter 4:3-4 - For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles -- when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries. 4 In regard to these, they think it strange that you do not run with them in the same flood of dissipation, speaking evil of you.


• 1 Peter 4:12-14 - Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; 13 but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ's sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy.


• 14 If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified.


• Respect for God’s word will lead to a careful discernment in all things. (Col 3:17)


• Colossians 3:17 - And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.


• Does your child know the difference in the Lord’s church and the ways of man?

• Churches that fail to discern in “doctrine” will also fail in morals.

• All of the previous points are part of the kind of heart needed in the home. (Eph 5:23-25, 33)

• Respect for God’s plan limits who you can marry. (Mt 19:9)
