Michael’s First Take

Is First Church your church? Is First Church your church? Is First Church your church? Is First Church your church? Then please let your family members and care givers know so that we will be contacted when you need us and can’t call yourself. We are here to support you and your family in all the ways that we can, but you need to let people know to give us a call. Thank you.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Romans 15:13

Dear First Church Community –

May. May Day. Mother’s Day. Pentecost. Graduation Sunday. Memorial Day. May is a wonderful month. Summer is before us while spring, after a crazy April, is in full bloom. Easter is fresh in our memory even as the promised Holy Spirit comes upon us. Appreciation is shown to mothers as well as those who have gone before us. Celebrations abound.

May is also a verb. May asks for permission. When I was a child we played a game called “Mother, may I?” It was a version of “Simon says”. The Bible is full of examples of what we may do or may become. run the race, so that you may obtain the prize (1 Cor. 9:24) may grow up into Him in all things (Eph.4:15) that I may speak boldly (Eph.6:10) whereby we may serve God acceptably (Heb.12:28) that our joy may be full (2 Tim. 1:12) that they may rest from their labors (Rev.14:13) .

May I? Sometimes a parishioner asks permission to do something that I assume they know they may do…vacuum after an event…wash dishes…pull weeds… sign up to teach Sunday School…attend an Action Team meeting…clap or stand or sit or sing during a song…ask me questions about the sermon…the list goes on and on.

Being a part of a church family means “Yes, you may.” Having a church home means “Yes, you may.” It is in doing - that our faith comes alive, that enables our church body to function, that satisfies our need to contribute. So thank you to each of you who “step up” in countless ways.

Looking ahead…SUNDAYS THIS MONTH WILL BE SPECIAL.

MAY 6 – Communion Sunday. Sermons continue on “Life’s Essentials”.

MAY 13 – Mother’s Day. Last day of Sunday School.

MAY 20 – Pentecost. ONE 10am SERVICE (wear red). Graduation and Recognition Sunday. All Church picture and brunch. An update on Ebenezer Too will be given.

MAY 29 –Memorial Day weekend.

So…may you? Yes, you may. This is your month.

Pastor Michael

SHIJKLMNO SKPO

Our Hand Bell Choirs will be having another Signature Sale on Pentecost Sunday, May 20th. Members of both bell choirs will be donating baked goods and different items they make to raise funds for the refurbishing of our Malmaark Hand bells. Unlike the 4 1/2 octaves of Schulmerich hand bells that we have refurbished twice previously, the Malmaark hand bells, our littlest and largest hand bells, have never been worked on and updated. We would like to protect our investment of these beautiful instruments. Your support will be appreciated!!!

ONE GOOD MEAL...we collect cookies on the fourth Sunday of each month for this program. Please bring cookies, individually wrapped (one large or two small), to church on May 27 (Memorial Day weekend). Thanks for your support of this program! For more information, contact Barbara Stone at (816) 509-8681.

A Huge Thank You… To everyone who came out to support the Youth Fundraiser, “A Night at the Movies.” What a wonderful night it was, raising over $6,200 to support our youth! Thank you to everyone who made the evening possible including those who performed, those who prepared the food, those who did countless acts of running around in preparation of the evening, those who donated items for the Silent and Live Auctions, and to those who purchased tickets to share the evening with us! There are not enough words to express our appreciation to all of you!

H.O.W. - HOSPITALITY ON WHEELS. We offer a few meals for those in need from surgeries, illnesses, bereavement, and more. If you are interested in preparing meals for someone, or if you have a need for a few meals yourself, contact Sharon Pyburn at the church, 524-3933, or email [email protected].

CARING MINISTRIES...Here at First Pres., we are all family and we are here for each other! Through volunteer efforts we offer many “Caring Ministries:” During difficult times, people often feel very alone. They may have no one to talk to who will really listen. Stephen Ministries give them a listening ear—someone they can talk to about things they wouldn’t discuss with anyone else. The We Care team meets once a month. Members of this team reach out to our shut-ins. Contact Sharon Pyburn if you feel you have time to visit with any of our members who can’t make it out to church. Did you know...we are a Stephen Ministries Congregation? We are one of more than 12,000 congregations throughout the world that have equipped lay people to care for those experiencing grief, divorce, hospitalization, and many other life crises. Stephen Ministry is our ”one to one” compassionate care team. Stephen Leaders go through extensive training and they meet weekly with those who have concerns. If you have questions about the program, please contact Pastor Michael, John Fields or Sharon Pyburn.

SRNHJI HS TONO!...With that comes a chance for storms and tornadoes. Do you know where our safety areas are located in the church? If you are upstairs and cannot make it downstairs, please use the bathrooms and church lounge. If you are able to take the stairs down to the lower level, (do not take the elevator!) the following rooms are considered a safety shelter: the library, the center room, room 100 and room 110. The nursery uses their bathroom as a storm shelter. All rooms should have a red sign on them that says Storm Shelter. The rooms should also have a flashlight.
