The Israelites knew when the Passo- ver was coming, and so were not in fear, but had faith and courage, “putting into effect with one accord the divine institution.” In this we can see a foretelling of the Eucharist that we celebrate according to Christ’s command, “Do this in memory of me.” We see that Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, and Jacob died in faith, although they did not see fulfill- ment of the promise. We live in hope that our faith will be fulfilled every time we celebrate this sacrament. We too are not to be afraid, but to have hope that our faith will be fulfilled in the coming of Christ. FAITH AND HOPE Faith and hope are closely united in today’s readings. The Israelites knew when the Passo-ver was coming, and so were not in fear, but had faith and courage, “putting into effect with one accord the divine institution.” In this we can see a foretelling of the Eucharist that we celebrate according to Christ’s command, “Do this in memory of me.” We see that Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, and Jacob died in faith, although they did not see fulfill-ment of the promise. PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS

We will have the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Fri-day, September 6th, from 9am to 9pm. Mass will be cele-brated at 12pm. Please come and join us for Adoration on this First Friday. We invite you to sign up for an hour of adora-

tion during the 12 hours. The sign-up sheet is on the parish bulletin board in the church hall. Please consider signing up for an hour to ensure we have every hour covered, and hopefully more than one person per hour can come.

BLESSED SACRAMENT ADORATION

Sunday afternoon, August 18th in the Church Hall, from 4-6 PM, Deacon Jim and Maureen Eckert will be present-

ing an illustrated talk on their recent pilgrimage to the Holy Land. They will be sharing stories and slides of their travels from the Sea of Galilee to Jerusalem including Bethlehem and Naza-reth. Please sign up on the bulletin board in the back of the Church so we know how many chairs to set up. There is no charge for this event.

HOLY LAND PILGRIMAGE TALK

I have noticed that students are getting ready to get back to school. Some students are happy and others not. I understand that many of us do not like change; it can throw some of us off with what we are comfortable with. In our parish, there are also many changes that are taking place. The back wall in the parish was recently painted. We are looking into creating and utilizing the lighting in the sanc-tuary in our church in the best possible way with a grant that we received. The gardens around the church property are getting done and the irrigation system has been a work in progress so that it would be effective and not be wasting water. We are also dealing with many other maintenance needs of our parish. Keep supporting our parish as we continue to deal with the changes that need to take place. Let us all pray for those who are getting ready to start school and pray for those who have been affected by the recent shootings.

May God continue to bless you and our parish of St. Thomas, Fr. Abel

PASTOR’S MESSAGE

The dogma of the Assumption of Mary – also called the “Dormition of Mary” in the Eastern Churches – has its roots in the early centuries of the Church. The Catholic Church teaches that when Mary ended her earthly life, God assumed her, body and soul into heaven.

Gospel: Lk 12:32-48 Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not be afraid any longer, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the king-dom. Sell your belongings and give alms. Provide money bags for yourselves that do not wear out, an inexhausti-ble treasure in heaven that no thief can reach nor moth destroy. For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be. “Gird your loins and light your lamps and be like servants who await their master’s return from a wed-ding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks. Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival. Amen, I say to you, he will gird himself, have them recline at table, and proceed to wait on them. And should he come in the second or third watch and find them prepared in this way, blessed are those servants. Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour when the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.” Then Peter said, “Lord, is this parable meant for us or for everyone?” And the Lord re-plied, “Who, then, is the faithful and prudent steward whom the master will put in charge of his servants to distribute the food allowance at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master on arrival finds doing so. Truly, I say to you, the master will put the servant in charge of all his property. But if that servant says to him-self, ‘My master is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, to eat and drink and get drunk, then that servant’s master will come on an unexpected day and at an unknown hour and will punish the servant severely and assign him a place with the unfaithful. That servant who knew his master’s will but did not make preparations nor act in accord with his will shall be beaten severely; and the servant who was ignorant of his master’s will but acted in a way deserving of a severe beating shall be beaten only lightly. Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.”
