FIRST CLASS OFFICER OF THE MERCHANT NAVY (01MM) ENGINEER-LEVEL SEAFARER The French Maritime academy trains officers of the merchant navy. Following a five-year-and-a-half dual–purpose training course, both deck and engine, after the bac- calaureat, the students obtain the merchant navy higher education diploma (DESMM) and an engi- neer-level title. They will hold the highest positions onboard: Chief Engineer and Master. The success in graduating and completing navigation time on board sea-going vessels, first as a cadet then as an officer will lead to the first class captain certificate. This international certificate gives the prerogatives to supervi- sion and management positions on all ships and oceans worldwide. OPPORTUNITIES The French Maritime Academy’s (ENSM) students are recruited by pri- vate shipping companies as officers on vessels of all types : container ships, crude oil tankers, chemical tankers, ferries, gas carriers, seismic and oceanographic vessels, cruise ships, offshore supply vessels… on all the oceans worldwide. In ports, they are mainly recruited for towage and pilotage. TRAINING The training consists of lectures, practi- cals, simulation exercises and onboard internships. The students spend two months on board as navigation time in 1st, 2nd and 3rd years. The first three years are done on the Marseille campus. The rest is done on the Le Havre campus over five semesters of which eight months are dedicated to navigation time. The students who wish not to sail anymore have the possibility to choose Marine engineering at the end of the third year: Ecoship Management (EGN) and Off- shore Maintenance Manager (DMO) SUBJECTS TAUGHT Navigation, Charts, Weather, Mecha- nical Propulsion, Diesel Engines, Hydraulics, Displacement Machine, Turbomachine, Safety, Environment Security, Electricity, Electronics, Maths, English, Mechanics of fluids, Thermo- dynamics… Right from the first year, the students carry out practical courses to prepare their onboard internships: personal sur- vival techniques, fire-fighting… RETRAINING Merchant navy officers retrain ashore within shipping companies, ports and waterways services, the industry, marine insurance, expertise…Their ability to manage technical and human factors independently, their sense of responsibilities, their safety and securi- ty awareness as well as the protection of the environment and their expe- rience in multicultural management give them this attractiveness highly prized by the industrials. Former students can integrate the Marine Engineering programmes (EGN-DMO) or become maritime lec- turers.

OPPORTUNITIESThe French Marit ime Academy’s

(ENSM) students are recruited by pri-

vate shipping companies as officers on

vessels of all types : container ships,

crude oil tankers, chemical tankers,

oceanographic vessels, cruise ships,

offshore supply vessels… on all the

oceans worldwide.

In ports, they are mainly recruited for

towage and pilotage.

TRAININGThe training consists of lectures, practi-

cals, simulation exercises and onboard

done on the Marseille campus. The rest

is done on the Le Havre campus over

five semesters of which eight months

are dedicated to navigation time. The

students who wish not to sail anymore

have the possibility to choose Marine

engineering at the end of the third year:

Ecoship Management (EGN) and Off-

shore Maintenance Manager (DMO)

SUBJECTS TAUGHTNavigation, Charts, Weather, Mecha-

nical Propulsion, Diesel Engines,

Hydraulics, Displacement Machine,

Turbomachine, Safety, Environment

Security, Electricity, Electronics, Maths,

English, Mechanics of fluids, Thermo-

dynamics…

Right from the first year, the students

carry out practical courses to prepare

their onboard internships: personal sur-

vival techniques, fire-fighting…

RETRAININGMerchant navy officers retrain ashore

within shipping companies, ports and

waterways services, the industry,

marine insurance, expertise…Their

ability to manage technical and human

factors independently, their sense of

The 2019 competitive exam will take place in May 2019 on the Le Havre, Saint-Malo, Nantes, Marseille campuses but

also in Bordeaux and Paris as well as in the overseas territories. It is open to high-school final year pupils as well as to

the holders of the baccalaureat and consists in four examinations : French, English, Maths and Physics.

In 2018, there were 110 places available. There is no motivation interview.

ADMISSION ON RECORDSThe admission on records is open to holders of a

higher education diploma of a scientific or tech-

nical nature of a level at least equal to the one of

the end of the first cycle of higher education or

candidates who followed the second year of a

science preparatory class to the ‘grandes écoles”.

The registrations will open at the end of January

2019 on www.supmaritime.fr where you will find the

conditions and decrees related to the recruitment.

FOR YOUR OWN INFORMATIONThe French Maritime Academy’s students are

seamen. They are not part of the student’s social

security system but they belong to the seafarers

system. A student guide is available on www.enim.eu

COMPETITIVE ENTRANCE EXAM IN MAY 2019

ORGANISATION OF STUDIESThe first three years are done on the

Marseille campus in Pointe Rouge

which is equipped with rooms dedi-

cated to marine charts, multimedias

labs, IT, electrotechnic engineering,

hydraulics, mechanics, automation,

navigation simulators with a panoramic

view, machinery simulators, Dynamic

Positioning simulator, loading simulator,

radar simulator, radiocommunication

simulator…

The steam plant with diesel engines,

boilers and turbine is unique in France.

For the M1 and M2 specialisation, the

students will benefit from the Le Havre

campus, quai Frissard, a five-minute

walk from the train station where the

Ship-in School, concept which trains

to navigation in real-life conditions,

enables the operation of up to four ships

in situation and to network the deck

and machine simulators in dedicated

premises over four levels.
