1Krug Vintage Brut 1996Reims
The 1996 Krug Vintage remains oneof the greatest Champagnes evermade. It is also far less expensivethan either the Clos du Mesnil or ClosdAmbonnay but equally as delicious. This bottle is stratospheric, with layersof explosive fruit that flow effortlesslyto the multi-dimensional, captivatingfinish. It is another eternal Champagnefrom Krug. A. Galloni for TWA, 98 pts.07/11

7Chateau Margaux 2003Margaux, 1er Cru Classe
Am I being too stingy with the2003 Chateau Margaux? A wine ofextraordinary complexity and intensity,it reveals a deep purple color, a stylenot unlike the 1990 Margaux (possiblyeven more concentrated), a velvetytexture, and notes of spring flowersinterwoven with camphor, melted
licorice, creme de cassis, and paingrille. Not a blockbuster, it offersextraordinary intensity as well as asurreal delicacy/lightness. There isriveting freshness to this offering, whichtips the scales at a lofty (for this estate)13.5% alcohol, as well as an alluringsweetness and accessibility. It probablywill tighten up over the next fewyears. Nevertheless, it is a profoundChateau Margaux that brings to minda hypothetical blend of the 1982 and1990. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2035. R. Parker, 99 pts. 04/061 bottle

10Chateau Cos dEstournel 2005St. Estephe, 2eme Cru Classe
While I am not convinced the2005 Cos dEstournel will eclipsethe compelling 2003 Cos, it isunquestionably another superb classicfrom proprietor Michel Reybier and hisbrilliant winemaker, Jean-GuillaumePrats. Made from an unusually highpercentage of Cabernet Sauvignon(78%) and the balance mostly Merlotwith a tiny dollop of Cabernet Franc, this superb effort requires plenty oftime in the bottle. It boasts an inky/purple color as well as a gloriousperfume of licorice, Asian spices, creme de cassis, blackberries, andtoasty oak. This full-bodied St.-Estepheis exceptionally powerful, pure, anddense with a layered mid-palate thatbuilds like a skyscraper. While there aremassive tannins, they are remarkablyvelvety and well-integrated in this big, backstrapping effort that should enjoyan unusually long life. Forget it for 8-10years, and drink it between 2017-2040. R. Parker, 98 pts. 04/081 imperial (owc)

u: 2.5cm
The 1990 La Chapelle is the sexyand opulent. I had the 1990 at the
Jaboulet tasting, and again out of adouble magnum three months ago.On both occasions it was spectacular, clearly meriting a three-digit score. The modern day equivalent of the1961, it deserves all the attention it hasgarnered.
The color remains an opaque purple, with only a slight pink at the edge.Spectacular aromatics offer up aromasof incense, smoke, blackberry fruit, cassis, barbecue spice, coffee, anda touch of chocolate. As it sits in theglass, additional nuances of pepperand grilled steak emerge. There is
extraordinary freshness for such amammoth wine in addition to abundanttannin, an amazing 60-second finish, and a level of glycerin and thick, fleshytexture that have to be tasted to bebelieved.
Despite its youthfulness, the 1990 LaChapelle is lovely to drink, although itwill be even better with another 5-6years of cellaring; it should age for 35-40+ years. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2050. R. Parker, 100 pts. 06/001 magnum

Flirting with perfection, the 2010Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer ToKalon Vineyard RBS from clone 337was aged in new Darnajou barrels(80%) and the rest in new Taransaudbarrels. There were 410 cases
produced, which is several hundredcases less than the production in 2012.An unbelievable red wine, it boasts aninky/purple color as well as abundantnotes of charcoal, white chocolate, toast, new saddle leather, blueberries, blackberries, creme de cassis andlicorice. As the wine sits in the glass, some chocolaty, smoky elements alsoemerge. This virtually perfect CabernetSauvignon has been flawlessly madeand should age effortlessly for 25-30+years. R. Retasting the 2007 CabernetSauvignon was a treat as I believe itis the greatest Cabernet SauvignonSpottswoode has ever produced.Wonderful aromas of black raspberries, blueberries, black currants and flowersjump from the glass of this dark ruby/
purple-tinged Cabernet. As I havestated before, if Chateau Margauxwere in Napa Valley, it would beSpottswoode. The purity, balance anddelicacy of this wine are impressive.Perhaps slightly less dense andpowerful than the 2008, the 2007 isflawlessly put together with nothing outof place. It, too, should age effortlesslyfor 20-30+ years. R. Parker, 99 pts.12/102 bottles

80Chateau Cos dEstournel 2009St. Estephe, 2eme Cru Classe
One of the greatest young wines Ihave ever tasted, the monumental2009 Cos dEstournel has lived up toits pre-bottling potential. A remarkableeffort from winemaking guru Jean-Guillaume Prats and owner Michel
Reybier, this blend of 65% CabernetSauvignon and the rest Merlot (33%)and a touch of Cabernet Franc (2%)was cropped at 33 hectoliters perhectare. It boasts an inky/black/purplecolor along with an extraordinarybouquet of white flowers interwovenwith blackberry and blueberry liqueur, incense, charcoal and graphite. Thewine hits the palate with extraordinarypurity, balance and intensity as well asperfect equilibrium, and a seamlessintegration of tannin, acidity, woodand alcohol. An iconic wine as wellas a remarkable achievement, it isthe greatest Cos dEstournel ever
produced. It is approachable enoughat present that one could appreciateit with several hours of decanting, butit will not hit its prime for a decade, and should age effortlessly for a halfcentury. R. Parker, 100 pts. 02/121 magnum

82Chateau Montrose 2010St. Estephe, 2eme Cru Classe
The 2010 Montrose is a fabulouswine, and I was leaning toward givingit a three-digit score, which it mayultimately merit after it resolves someof its very sweet tannin. It is not assoft or flamboyant as the 2009, but itis a great classic, coming in at 13.9%natural alcohol. Representing 64% of
the total production, the final blendis 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37%Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 1%Petit Verdot (which is one percentdifferent than the barrel sample blendsthat were presented). Inky bluish/purple in color, with classic blueberry, black currant, crushed rock and floralnotes, hints of graphite, and lots ofwild mountain berry fruit, this wine isextravagantly rich, has very sweet butnoticeable tannin, laser-like precision,a massive, full-bodied mouthfeel anda finish of close to 50+ seconds. This remarkable wine will probablytighten up somewhat in the bottle, and need most of a decade to shedsome tannin and i ts rather grapy, primary personality. The finish blew meaway, and the overall power, richnessand balance of this wine are virtuallyperfect. Look for it to drink well for halfa century or more. R Parker, 99 pts.02/1312 bottles (owc)

87Chateau Pontet Canet 2010Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe
An absolutely amazing wine, fromgrapes harvested between the endof September and October 17, thisblend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon,30% Merlot and the rest CabernetFranc and Petit Verdot has close to15% natural alcohol. It comes fromone of the few biodynamic vineyards
in Bordeaux, but you are likely tosee many more, given the successthat Tesseron seems to be having atall levels, both in his vineyards andin his fermentation/winemaking. Anastounding, compelling wine withthe classic Pauillac nose more oftenassociated with its cross-streetneighbor, Mouton-Rothschild, cremede cassis, there are also some violetsand other assorted floral notes. Thewine has off-the-charts massivenessand intensity but never comes acrossas heavy, overbearing or astringent. The freshness, laser-like precision, and full-bodied, massive richnessand extract are simply remarkable tobehold and experience. It is very easy,to become jaded tasting such greatwines from a great vintage, but it isreally a privilege to taste something asamazing as this. Unfortunately, it needsa good decade of cellaring, and thatsassuming it doesnt close down overthe next few years. This is a 50- to 75-year wine from one of the half-dozenor so most compulsive and obsessiveproprietors in all of Bordeaux. Is thereanything that proprietor Alfred Tesseronis not doing right? Talk about an estatethat is on top of its game! Pontet-
Canets 2010 is a more structured, tannic and restrained version of theirmost recent perfect wine, the 2009.Kudos to Pontet-Canet! R. Parker,100 pts. 02/1312 bottles (owc)

The 2009s nearly 14% naturalalcohol, exquisite ripeness, andincredible complex bouquet of Asianspices, fruitcake, licorice, smoke, blackberries and black currants are todie for. A blend of 84% Merlot and therest equal parts Cabernet Franc andCabernet Sauvignon, it possesses a
viscous texture as well as a freshnessand vibrancy that are remarkablegiven the wines weight, richnessand potential massiveness. Thisextraordinary effort is one of the finestVieux Chateau Certans made over thelast sixty years. It will undoubtedly shutdown in bottle, requiring a decade ormore of cellaring. It should keep for 50years thereafter. Proprietor Thienpontthinks it is a modern day version of the1948. R. Parker, 99 pts. 02/1212 bottles (owc)

I am blown away by the 1988 Comtesde Champagne. Still incredibly fresh,
the 1988 Comtes flows with intensemineral notes that frame a vibrantcore of Chardonnay fruit. The color, aromatics and flavors are all remarkablyyouthful, while the crystalline purityof the finish suggests the 1988 willdrink well for another two decades,if not longer. Readers who enjoymature Champagne will need to bepatient. Still, I see no reason to denygratification; this is a rock star wine!Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030. 217Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2000Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe
Perhaps the most beautiful packagingever on a Bordeaux bottle, BaronessPhilippine de Rothschild literallyproduced a work of art in the gold-engraved bottle of 2000 MoutonRothschild. Of course, one cantdrink the glass, but this is a top-flightMouton Rothschild, eclipsed only by
the 2006 and 2009. A rich, tannic, earthy style, with loads of creme decassis and floral notes, the final blendof 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14%Merlot is a full-bodied wine with plentyof coffee, earth, chocolatey notes, andstill plenty of tannin to resolve. I gave itan anticipated maturity range of 2015-2050 back in 2003, and that looks ontarget. R. Parker, 96+ pts. 06/1012 bottles (owc)

The 1998 Cote Rotie La Landonne isa perfect wine...at least for my palate. Its saturated black/purple color isaccompanied by an extraordinary
nose of smoke, incense, tapenade, creosote, blackberry, and currantaromas. It is densely packed withblackberry, truffle, chocolate, and leather-like flavors. The winepossesses high tannin, but perfectharmony, impeccable balance, andgorgeous integration of acidity, alcohol, and tannin. It is a tour de force inwinemaking. Anticipated maturity:2007-2025. R. 409Castello dei Rampolla Vigna dAlceo1999Tuscany
The monumental 1999 VignadAlceo is a 20,000-bottle cuvee of85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15%Sangiovese aged in oak. It boastsan exceptionally provocative nose ofliquid minerals, graphite, plums, cremede cassis, and cherry liqueur. It isfabulously concentrated yet remarkablylight on its feet, with medium to fullbody, sweet tannin, and layer uponlayer of flavor nuances. There is plentyof glycerin in this rich, but neither heavynor overbearing effort. This is a thrilling
tour de force! However, it requirescellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2025. Bravo! R. Parker, 99 pts. 10/016 bottles (oc)

500Screaming Eagle 2007Napa
As impossible as it might seem, the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon takesthings to another level. An exquisite, celestial bouquet melds into endlesslayers of fruit as this rich, voluptuouswine blossoms on the palate. Full-bodied and seductive, the 2007conquers all of the senses with itshead spinning, beautiful personality. As always, Screaming Eagle is a bitmore restrained next to Napa Valleysother heavy hitters, yet the pedigreeof this opulent vintage comes throughin spades. A kaleidoscope of aromasand flavors flows through to thecreamy, textured finish. I have tastedthe 2007 several times recently. It hasalways been perfect. My only issuewith the 2007 is that it appears to beshutting down just a touch. Anticipated

504Shafer Vineyards Hillside Select
1999Napa
The 1999 Cabernet SauvignonHillside Select is one of the finestwines of the vintage. The 14.9%alcohol is barely noticeable giventhe amazing concentration andintensity. A saturated opaque purplecolor is followed by scents of vanilla, blackberry liqueur, crushed minerals, and a hint of white flowers. There isstunning intensity, tremendous purity, full body, and a remarkable, seamlessfinish (amazing given the elevated, austere tannin). Give the 1999 another2-3 years of cellaring, and enjoy it overthe following two decades or longer. Abrilliant effort! R. Parker, 97 pts. 12/036 bottles (owc)

510Shafer Vineyards Hillside Select2004Napa
The Cabernet Sauvignon HillsideSelect has been one of Napas truefirst-growths since the early 1990s. The2004 exhibits a dense opaque purplecolor along with spectacular, almostsurreal levels of fruit that are neverheavy, overripe or flawed. Its beautiful
notes of creme de cassis, licoriceand subtle oak (this cuvee spends32 months in 100% new Frenchbarrels), skyscraper-like texture andextraordinarily long finish are all superb. This is a great wine from a great familywho has done everything necessary toproduce a world-class wine that cancompete with any wine made fromthe Cabernet Sauvignon grape. Youcant say enough positives about theShafers. Drink this 2004 Hillside Selectover the next 20-25 years, although itcould be even more stupendous in 40-50 years. R. Parker, 98+ pts. 04/146 bottles
