5.Chateau Lynch Bages 1988Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe“One of the big surprises is how delicious this wine has turnedout. It is a beautiful, classic claret. Dark ruby-colored with purplehues, it reveals aromas of dried herbs, smoke, leather, grilledmeats, and copious black cherry and currant fruit. Medium-bodied, powerful, rich, and surprisingly evolved, this vintage hashit its plateau of maturity, where it should remain for another 10-12 years.” R. 7.Chateau Montrose 1990St. Estephe, 2eme Cru Classe“In several tastings last year, the 1990 Montrose clearly revealedits incredible complexity and massive character. I was especiallypleased when, at a large lecture I gave in London at the end ofMarch, the 1990 Montrose, in very tough company (Cheval Blanc1989 and 1990, Pichon-Lalande 1989 and 1990, Certan de May1989 and 1990), proved the over-whelming choice of a crowd ofnearly 400 British tasters. The wine is remarkably rich, with adistinctive nose of sweet, jammy fruit, liquefied minerals, newsaddle leather, and grilled steak. In the mouth, the enormousconcentration, extract, high glycerin, and sweet tannin slideacross the palate with considerable ease. It is a huge, corpulent,awesomely-endowed wine that is still relatively approachable, asit has not yet begun to shut down and lose its baby fat. Itthoroughly embarrassed the 1989, itself an exceptional wine. The1990 needs 10 more years of cellaring; it should last for 25-30,possibly 40-50 years.” R. Parker, 100 pts. 02/975 bottles$1,400-2,000

The saturated, dark ruby color reveals a hint ofamber at the edge. Full-bodied, succulent, and velvety, thisgorgeously-proportioned, decadently-styled Vega Sicilia is fullymature, yet its balance, freshness, and thrilling level of flavorextraction suggest it should easily glide through 15-20 moreyears. If readers have the financial means to drink one fullymature vintage of Vega Sicilia’s Unico Riserva, it should be the1966 or 1953.” R. Parker, 95 pts. 02/952 bottles$400-600
An array of the finest Bordeaux purchased as futures (with a caseof DRC for good measure) from a Massachusetts Collector, removed from professional climate controlled storage by Skinnerstaff.
Cheval Blanc doesn’t scream out for attention, rather it ispassionately pursued by a knowing few. Unquestionably worthyof “First Growth” stature. In keeping with the Right Bank scene, the beautiful park-like setting feels surprisingly casual. Formal to apoint, but not overly so. Cheval Blanc is comprised of cabernetfranc and merlot. The vinous equivalent of grace and good taste.-PhM
50.Chateau Cheval Blanc 2000St. Emilion, 1er Grand Cru Classe (A)“This closed, backward blend of 53% Merlot and 47% CabernetFranc boasts a saturated purple color along with a reticent butstriking bouquet of blackberries, blueberries, truffles, and mocha. In spite of its tightness, aeration reveals scents of licorice, menthol, and saddle leather. Opulent and full-bodied, with lowacidity, sweet tannin, and a 60-second finish, it is unquestionablyas profound as the 1990 and 1982. I still believe the 2000 hasthe potential to be the most compelling Cheval Blanc since themythical 1947 and 1949, but patience is required. It should merita three digit score in 7-10 years, but it is closed at present.Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030+.” R. Parker, 100 pts. 04/034 bottles$2,300-3,400

55.Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1996Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe“Tasted three times since bottling, the 1996 Lafite-Rothschild isunquestionably this renowned estate’s greatest wine. As Iindicated last year, only 38% of the crop was deemed grandenough to be put into the final blend, which is atypically high inCabernet Sauvignon (83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% CabernetFranc, 7% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot). This massive wine maybe the biggest, largest-scaled Lafite I have ever tasted. It willrequire many years to come around, so I suspect all of us pastthe age of fifty might want to give serious consideration as towhether we should be laying away multiple cases of this wine. Itis also the first Lafite-Rothschild to be put into a new engravedbottle (designed to prevent fraudulent imitations). The wineexhibits a thick-looking, ruby/purple color, and a knock-out noseof lead pencil, minerals, flowers, and black currant scents.Extremely powerful and full-bodied, with remarkable complexityfor such a young wine, this huge Lafite is oozing with extract andrichness, yet has managed to preserve its quintessentially elegantpersonality. This wine is even richer than it was prior to bottling. Itshould unquestionably last for 40-50 years. Anticipated maturity:2012-2050. The wine of the vintage?” R. 59.Chateau La Mission Haut Brion 2000Talence, Cru Classe“A superstar of this great vintage, the 2000 La Mission Haut-Brion is as profound as the 1989, 1982, and 1975. It is morestructured and tannic than the 1989, more civilized and refined, but not as thick as the 1982, and sweeter as well as purer thanthe 1975. The 2000 is neither flamboyant nor accessible, butwhat upside potential it possesses! In time, one might have toreturn to the prodigious duo of 1959 and 1961 to find a LaMission with this much potential. While still tight from bottling, itsinky purple color is accompanied by extravagantly sweet aromasof blackberries, blueberries, toast, scorched earth, coffee, asphalt, graphite, and smoke. Super-intense and unctuously-textured, with a sumptuous mid-palate and finish, this is anexplosively rich, layered effort that possesses everything I couldever want from a terroir that has given me as much hedonisticand intellectual pleasure as any other wine in the world. It is anamazing achievement for administrator Jean-Bernard Delmas, hisson, Jean-Phillipe, and the entire winemaking team. Thephenomenal aftertaste goes on for over a minute. Anticipatedmaturity: 2011-2045.” R. Parker, 100 pts. 04/0312 bottles (owc)$4,500-6,500
60.Chateau Latour 1995Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe12 bottles (owc)$3,000-5,000
61.Chateau Latour 1996Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe“A spectacular Latour, the 1996 may be the modern day clone ofthe 1966, only riper. This vintage, which is so variable in Pomerol,St.-Emilion, and Graves, was fabulous for the late-harvestedCabernet Sauvignon of the northern Medoc because of splendidweather in late September and early October. An opaque purplecolor is followed by phenomenally sweet, pure aromas of cassisinfused with subtle minerals. This massive offering possessesunreal levels of extract, full body, intensely ripe, but abundanttannin, and a finish that lasts for nearly a minute. Classic anddense, it displays the potential for 50-75 years of longevity.Although still an infant, it would be educational to taste a bottle.Anticipated maturity: 2015-2050.” R. Parker, 99 pts. 06/006 magnums (owc)$5,500-8,500
62.Chateau Latour 2000Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe“There are only 14,000 cases (only 48% of the crop made it intothe grand vin) of the 2000, which flirts with perfection. Truly greatstuff, it reveals perfect equilibrium, great finesse, yet colossal size, with a thickness and density that rival the brilliant 1996. Thissaturated black ruby/purple colored wine seems almost discreeton first inspection, but with aeration, notes of vanilla, exceptionally pure, mineral-infused crème de cassis, and earthemerge. Full-bodied and tannic, it should come close torepresenting perfection. Latour’s 2000 is hard to compare withprevious vintages. It obviously does not have the opulence of the1990 and 1982, yet there is an extraordinary purity, delineation, seamlessness, and freshness to this wine that sets it apart fromprevious vintages. In any event, it is prodigious, with at least fivedecades of evolution ahead of it. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2050.” R. Parker, 98 pts. 04/0312 bottles (owc)$8,000-12,000

65.Chateau Margaux 2003Margaux, 1er Cru Classe“Am I being too stingy with the 2003 Chateau Margaux? A wineof extraordinary complexity and intensity, it reveals a deep purplecolor, a style not unlike the 1990 Margaux (possibly even moreconcentrated), a velvety texture, and notes of spring flowersinterwoven with camphor, melted licorice, crème de cassis, andpain grille. Not a blockbuster, it offers extraordinary intensity aswell as a surreal delicacy/lightness. There is riveting freshness tothis offering, which tips the scales at a lofty (for this estate) 13.5%alcohol, as well as an alluring sweetness and accessibility. Itprobably will tighten up over the next few years. Nevertheless, itis a profound Chateau Margaux that brings to mind ahypothetical blend of the 1982 and 1990. Anticipated maturity:2011-2035.” R. 118.Chateau le Pin 1989Pomerol“It is a toss-up as to whether Le Tertre-Roteboeuf, Lafleur, or LePin is Bordeaux’s most exotic and kinky wine. Le Pin has takenon a mythical reputation, as evidenced by the absurdlystratospheric prices top vintages tend to fetch. There have beensome great vintages of this wine, which possesses one of themost dramatic and ostentatious bouquets of any Bordeaux.Additionally, the micro-production of 500-600 cases guarantees achic rarity that has also helped propel the price to astronomicallevels. When it is great (1982, 1983, 1989, 1990, and 1995), LePin provides one of the most gloriously hedonistic mouthfuls ofwine produced in Bordeaux. Critics of Le Pin feel it is tooobvious, too tasty, and perhaps not as long-lived as its near-byneighbors of Petrus, Lafleur, and L’Evangile. Yet my experiencesuggests Le Pin improves significantly in the bottle. Tasted justbefore or just after bottling, the wine can often reveal a blatant, aggressive oakiness that dominates the wine’s fruit. After 5-6years of bottle age, the toasty, pain grillee aromas become lessaggressive and better-integrated in the wine’s personality. Thishas happened with every vintage to date. With that in mind, I amnot surprised by just how splendidly the 1989 and 1990 haveturned out. Both wines appeared in the blind tasting in the sameseries as Petrus, and they were not out-classed. The 1990 Le Pinis a point or two superior to the 1989, but at this level of quality, comparisons are indeed tedious. Both are exceptional vintages, and the scores could easily be reversed at other tastings. The1989 is slightly tighter, with more noticeable tannin than thesofter, lower-acid 1990. Both take flavor intensity and exoticismto the maximum. The huge, coconut, exotic spice, jammy blackfruit, sweet, expansive flavors of these two vintages of Le Pin areto die for. The oak in both wines is more well-integrated than itwas only a year ago, and thus the wines no longer seemdisjointed. At present, the 1990 reveals a more expansive, chewier texture than the more firmly-structured 1989, but bothwines are decadently rich, hedonistic, and opulently textured. Irealize the pricing of Le Pin (can a top vintage of this wine reallybe selling at $4000 a bottle?) precludes most rational people frompurchasing it, yet forgetting the hoopla and surreal pricing, theseare great wines that are capable of two decades of cellaring. Iwould opt to drink them earlier rather than later. The 1989 shouldbe drunk over the next 12-20 years.” R. Parker, 96 pts. 02/971 bottle$1,000-1,500
Petrus - In the renowned village of Pomerol, pack-leaderChateau Petrus is unassumingly modest. Close by the road, lacking some formal alley, it is easy to overlook when contrastedwith some architecturally grander neighbors. The robin’s-egg-blue shutters against the limestone creates a hushed anddignified exterior to the chai. Of course the hedonistic treasurescrafted within are anything but reserved... On average, onlyabout 4,000 cases are made each vintage. -PhM

This huge, massively-endowedwine is packed with alcohol, glycerin, and high tannin. There isstupendous extraction of fruit and amazing length. The onlycriticism is that it is perhaps too big and robust for its own good.Lucky owners of well-stored bottles are advised to cellar it for afew more years. The1992 is a majestic young port that should ultimately rival, perhapseven surpass this house’s most recent great efforts (1985, 1977,1970, 1963). This colossal vintage port reveals a nearly opaqueblack/purple color, and an explosive nose of jammy black fruits, licorice, chocolate, and spices. Extremely full-bodied andunctuously-textured, this multi-layered, enormously-endowed portreveals a finish that lasts for over a minute. It is a magnificent portthat will age well for 30-40 years.” R. 186.Chateau Cos d’Estournel 1982St. Estephe, 2eme Cru Classe“A spectacular performance for this wine, Cos d’Estournel’s 1982exhibits a dark ruby/purple color with light pink at the rim. Sweetaromas of jammy black fruits intermixed with roasted espressoand vanillin jump from the glass of this young, concentrated, full-bodied, succulent effort. An opulent texture, low acidity, andsplendidly pure, concentrated, blackberry and cassis fruit suggestthis 1982 can be drunk now, or cellared for another 15-20 years. An awesome wine!” R. Opulent, with forward aromatics (gobsof black fruits intermixed with toasty pain grille scents and aboatload of spice), this terrific Cos possesses remarkableintensity, full body, and layers of jammy fruit nicely framed by thewine’s new oak. 198.Chateau Montrose 1990St. It is hard to choose a favorite, although the 1995 is a smoother, more immediately sexy andaccessible wine. It is an exquisite example of Pichon-Lalande withthe Merlot component giving the wine a coffee/chocolaty/cherrycomponent to go along with the Cabernet Sauvignon’s andCabernet Franc’s complex blackberry/cassis fruit. The winepossesses an opaque black/ruby/purple color, and sexy, flamboyant aromatics of pain grille, black fruits, and cedar.Exquisite on the palate, this full-bodied, layered, multidimensionalwine should prove to be one of the vintage’s most extraordinarysuccess stories. 212.Guigal La Mouline 1985 La Turque 1985Rhone“One of the all-time great La Moulines, this still youthful andunevolved wine does not have the tannic ferocity of the 1988, orthe sheer force and intensity of the 1978, 1976, and 1969, but itrepresents the epitome of this single-vineyard wine. Everything fitsperfectly in this full-bodied, black/purple-colored wine that revealsno garnet or amber at the edge of its color. The nose offers up aformidable array of overripe black raspberries and cherriesintertwined with scents of cedar, chocolate, olives, and toast.Extremely full-bodied, with an unctuosity and opulence that mustbe tasted to be believed, this velvety-textured wine’s finish lastsfor over a minute. It is one of the most concentrated butprofoundly endowed and well-balanced wines I have ever tasted.Like so many of the wines Guigal has produced from thisvineyard, no matter how hard one tries to articulate its glories, words are simply inadequate. The 1985 is just beginning toachieve full maturity, where it should remain for another 15+years. Anticipated maturity: now-2012. Last tasted 8/96.” R.Parker, 100 pts. 01/97“The debut vintage for this wine was especially impressive in viewof the fact that the vineyard was so young. The 1985 La Turque’scolor remains a dark purple, with no signs of amber or lightening. The nose explodes from the glass, revealing scents of jammyblack fruits, licorice, lead pencil, and smoke. Sweet, thick, highlyconcentrated flavors contain enough acidity and soft wood tanninto give the wine a well-focused feel. La Mission lies just across the road from Haut Brion. Thedescendents of American banker Clarence Dillon now run bothproperties (previously owning just Haut Brion). Given this fact, there exists an inevitable fixation to contrast the properties. Still, the arrangement between them is not really one of sibling rivalryat all. What is striking is how these wine estates and adjacentvineyards exist so close to the city center of Bordeaux (4 miles).Mercifully the unusually deep gravel soils so ideal for viticulturewere never paved over! -PhM

258.Fonseca 1963labels mostly missing and chips to wax capsule, vintage barelylegible“Fonseca is one of the great port lodges, producing the mostexotic and most complex port. If Fonseca lacks the sheer weightand power of a Taylor, Dow or Warre, or the opulent sweetnessand intensity of a Graham, it excels in its magnificently complex, intense bouquet of plummy, cedary, spicy fruit and long, broad, expansive flavors. With its lush, seductive character, one mightcall it the Pomerol of Vintage ports. When it is young, it oftenloses out in blind tastings to the heavier, weightier, more tannicwines, but I always find myself upgrading my opinion of Fonsecaafter it has had 7-10 years of age. The 1963, one of the greatmodern-day classics of vintage port, is an incredibly aromatic, sublime, majestic port that simply defines Fonseca’s styleperfectly.” R. Their tawnys are alsoamong the very best, though somewhat expensive. The 1963 isquite fabulous yet still seemingly capable of developing foranother decade or more.” R. Heitz Cellars - The late Joe Heitz was unquestionably one of theprimary reasons the Napa Valley gained modern day notoriety asa wine region. Heitz Cellars has been one of the Valley’s standardbearers for many years. In addition, a lengthy and impressive listof alums has gone on to important careers. In a cruel twist offate, their world-famous Martha’s Vineyard was torn out andreplanted just as the late ’90s wine boom developed. –PhM

Every time Ihave this wine it is undeniable that Mouton made a richer, morepersuasive wine in 1959 than in 1961. Astonishingly young andunevolved, with a black/purple color, the wine exhibits a youthfulnose of cassis, minerals, and new oak. It is exceptionally powerfuland super-extracted, with the fruit supported by high levels oftannin and some lusty quantities of alcohol. This mammoth, full-bodied Mouton-Rothschild should continue to evolve for another20-30 years. It may well be a 100-year wine! Last tasted 3/97.”R. Parker, 100 pts. 01/981 bottle$800-1,200

It is fatand full-bodied, with considerable tannin, structure, and musclein the finish. Flamboyantly rich and precocious early in life, it isgoing through an awkward stage where the tannin is present, butit is also sexy, juicy, and formidably-structured. Extremely elegant, medium-bodied, withintense concentration, richness, and sweet tannin, it appears tobe on a rapid evolutionary track, at least in comparison to recentLafite vintages that have been far more backward and powerful. The classy 2001 should be at its finest between 2007-2020.” R.Parker, 94 pts. 06/046 bottles$1,400-2,000

Medium to full-bodied, with exceptional purity, superbconcentration, and a long, intense, ripe, 40-second finish, this isa magnificent example of Latour. As the wine sat in the glass, scents of roasted espresso and toasty new oak emerged. Thisclassic will require considerable cellaring. Anticipated maturity:2012-2050.” R. Ullage of wines of vintages fifteen years and younger may be assumed to be of bottom neck or better unless otherwise noted.Similarly, regarding older vintages, lack of notation indicates acceptable and appropriate ullage, clear label and sound cork; potentialbidders must be prepared for reasonable variations in ullage in all vintages older than 15 years. Bidders with specificcondition questions should contact the Fine Wines department. Conditions generally not noted on group lots.
Bordeaux wines are catalogued referencing the 1855 classification. Chateau Petrus cataloguing reflects the practice of granting it 1erCru Classe and other notable Pomerol Chateaux are designated Cru Classe. All Bordeaux wines may assume to be chateau bottledunless otherwise stated.
It is standard practice for Skinner/Lower Falls Wine to open all original wooden cases (owc) for visual inspection. The opening ofbanded cases will be determined on an individual basis.
For Burgundy, German wines and all other more gradually slope-shouldered bottles, the ullage measurement is taken in centimetersfrom cork base, e.g. 3cm, 5cm, 7cm.
Bottle Sizes
bottle (750 ml) jeroboam (4xbt); Burgundy, Champagne half bottle (hbt)magnum (2xbt) jeroboam (6xbt); Bordeaux split (1/4 bottle) Champagne marie jeanne (3xbt) imperiale (8xbt); Bordeaux double magnum (4xbt) methuselah (8xbt); Burgundy
Buyers’ Caution: Levels are as when catalogued; ullage may change due to cork deterioration; other bottle conditions may occurduring storage and shipment. Risk of ullage variation and cork deterioration and/or failure is assumed by the buyer at time of saleand no sale cancellations, price negotiations, or bottle substitutions will be undertaken by either Skinner or Lower Falls Wine.Similarly, no substitutions will be made due to inaccurate descriptions.
Flights of Lots: Are of the same type, vintage and bottle count and follow one after another numerically, though ullage and bottleconditions may vary. The auctioneer may exercise discretion to offer, in consecutive lot order and at that same price, the followinglots in the flight to the first successful bidder of that flight. Subsequently, those lots not purchased will be offered anew and so on.Absentee bids placed on any lot in a flight will be applied to the next lot in the flight (if unsuccessful) until the flight concludes.
Environmental Note: It has only been in the last 15-20 years that the wine industry has moved away from using lead capsules tocover the cork and neck of a bottle. When opening an older wine, if you do have a lead capsule, give consideration as to how youdispose of it.
