FRANCE

A who’s who of wines from the most famous regions in the world, including the 2004 Krug Brut Champagne and the 2016 Domaine de la Vieille Julienne les Hauts-lieux Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

BORDEAUXRED WINE

CHÂTEAU BRANAIRE-DUCRU 2015AC Saint-Julien

TASTING NOTE: This pumps lush fig, boysenberry and blackberry confiture notes along, pushed by a rather polished but ample structure. Lots of anise and violet details cascade in on the finish, giving this extra aromatic dimension. Best from 2020 through 2038. 15,000 cases made. Ranked #33 in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines of 2018. Score: 94 (James Molesworth, winespectator.com, March 31, 2018)

472019 (XD) 750 mL $140.00

CHÂTEAU CANON-LA-GAFFELIÈRE 2015AC Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé

TASTING NOTE: Composed of 55% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Franc and 7% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged in French oak, 55% new, for 17 months, the 2015 Canon la Gaffeliere features a deep garnet-purple color and a cedar-laced nose to begin, giving way to fragrant underlying scents of roses and violets with a core of crushed black currants, blackberries and Bing cherries plus hints of fallen leaves and dusty earth. Medium to full-bodied, the seductively perfumed red and black fruit fills the mouth, framed with plush tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing very long and minerally. Score: 97 (Lisa Perrotti-Brown, MW, robertparker.com, Feb. 21, 2018)

475608 (XD) 750 mL $256.00

CHÂTEAU HAUT-BAGES LIBÉRAL 2015AC Pauillac

TASTING NOTE: This is one of the three biodynamic estates that are owned by Gonzague and Claire Lurton. The wine is generous while also firmly structured in the style of this property. A dense, dry core surrounded by blackberry and black-currant fruit promises great things. It finishes clean, clear and crisp. Drink from 2024. Editors’ Choice. Score: 94 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, Feb. 1, 2018)

666925 (XD) 750 mL $91.00

CHÂTEAU NENIN 2015AC Pomerol

TASTING NOTE: Classic Pomerol character of black olives, wet earth, violets and dark fruit. Full-bodied, tight and silky-textured with fabulous texture. Stones and dark berries. So serious and real. The depth is like looking down a well. Give it three to four years to integrate but already beautiful. Try in 2023 and onwards. Score: 97 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, Dec. 27, 2018)

983536 (XD) 750 mL $160.00

CHÂTEAU VILLEMAURINE 2015AC Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

TASTING NOTE: The 2015 Villemaurine is blended of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, aged in 70% new and 30% one-year-old oak barrels for 16 months. Medium garnet-purple in color, it is scented of crushed black cherries, mulberries and blackberry preserves with cedar chest and rose hip hints. Medium to full-bodied with firm, grainy tannins, it’s tightly knit with loads of layers and wonderful purity, finishing with great length and depth. Drink Date: 2021-2043. Score: 94 (Lisa Perrotti-Brown, MW, robertparker.com, Feb. 21, 2018)

323030 (XD) 750 mL $93.00

CHÂTEAU GAZIN 2014AC Pomerol

TASTING NOTE: The 2014 Gazin was stubborn and broody when tasted in bottle, but give it a few swirls and there comes forth gravel and black truffle scents alongside sultry black fruit. These aromatics are so engaging and involving, drawing you in towards it charms. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp and taut with great precision and sappiness towards the focused, almost symmetrical, black truffle-laced finish. This continues Gazin’s fine run of form, a great Pomerol from an estate predisposed these days to create sophisticated, classic wines. Drink Date: 2020-2045. Score: 94 (Neal Martin, robertparker.com, March 31, 2017)

88542 (XD) 750 mL $176.00

CHÂTEAU MALARTIC-LAGRAVIÈRE 2014AC Pessac-Léognan

TASTING NOTE: The 2014 Malartic-Lagravière is a gorgeous wine, but it is also flamboyant and exotic, especially in its flavor profile. Super-ripe red cherry and plum make a strong first impression. Sweet floral and spice notes, along with ripe, silky tannins, add to the wine’s sensuality. A rich, powerful wine with soft contours and striking depth, the 2014 is a real beauty. It will be even more compelling once the new oak tannins soften a bit further. The blend is 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. Tasted two times. Drinking window: 2022-2039. Score: 94+ (Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, Feb. 2017)

7 VINTAGES

CHÂTEAU TROPLONG MONDOT 2014AC Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé

TASTING NOTE: The 2014 Troplong Mondot is unquestionably one of the wines of the vintage, and this beauty has more intensity, richness, and exuberance than just about every other wine in 2014. A blend of 90% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc brought up in 85% new French oak, it sports a deep purple/plum color as well as a smorgasbord of blackcurrants, blackberries, scorched earth, toasty oak, graphite, espresso, and earth. With full-bodied richness, beautiful purity of fruit, and a rich, yet weightless texture, it’s a big, yet classy, elegant, and seamless wine from Xavier Pariente that should be snatched up by readers. It’s already drinking well but has 20-25 years of prime drinking to go. Drink Date: 2018-2043. Score: 96 (Jeb Dunnuck, jebdunnuck.com, Nov. 30, 2017)

10163 (XD) 750 mL $185.00

LA SERRE 2014AC Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé(Jean-Pierre Moueix)

TASTING NOTE: Extremely perfumed with flower and crushed-berry character. Hints of chocolate. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and savory acidity. Juicy and fresh. Almost Burgundian in texture. So approachable but better in 2021. Score: 92 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, Feb. 13, 2017)

900183 (XD) 750 mL $90.00

CHÂTEAU LA CARDONNE 2010AC Médoc Cru Bourgeois

TASTING NOTE: A superb blend of 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc, the 2010 from this well-known property has performed as well as I’ve ever tasted. A sleeper of the vintage, this endearing style of wine has copious quantities of ripe black cherry and black currant fruit interwoven with hints of forest floor, licorice and subtle background oak. It is medium to full-bodied, rich, textured and, overall, an enormously seductive style of wine to drink over the next 7-8 years. A member of the Alliance

des Cru Bourgeois du Medoc. Drink Date: 2013-2021. Score: 90 (Robert Parker Jr., robertparker.com, Feb. 27, 2013)

699116 (XD) 1500 mL $73.00

CHÂTEAU LA CABANNE 2009AC Pomerol

TASTING NOTE: Ripe and exotic wine with lots of ripe fruit such as plum and berry. Chocolate too. Full body, chewy tannins and a long finish. Walnut. Chocolate finish. Decadent. Score: 93 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, July 20, 2017)

275065 (XD) 750 mL $85.00

CLOS DU MARQUIS 2008AC Saint-Julien(Château Léoville-Las Cases)

TASTING NOTE: Treated now as a separate wine, rather than a second wine, with its own vineyard, Clos du Marquis has developed a dense, concentrated style. It is firm, chewy, the tannins in suspension in the rich fruit. Good aging potential. Cellar Selection. Score: 93 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, April 1, 2011)

647032 (XD) 750 mL $120.00

CHÂTEAU HAUT-BERGEY 2006AC Pessac-Léognan

TASTING NOTE: Consistently one of the top, under-the-radar wines of Pessac-Leognan, Haut-Bergey’s beautiful 2006 boasts a deep ruby/purple hue as well as a classic bouquet of hot rocks intermixed with graphite, cassis, incense, and charcoal. Medium to full-bodied with noticeable but sweet tannin, impressive purity, and an alluring texture, it is relatively evolved for a 2006, so consumption over the next 15 years is recommended. Drink Date: 2009-2024. Score: 91 (Robert Parker Jr., robertparker.com, Feb. 24, 2009)

516161 (XD) 750 mL $54.00

CHÂTEAU LYNCH-BAGES 2005AC Pauillac Grand Cru Classé

TASTING NOTE: Textbook, with mouthfilling and slightly gutsy black currant, fig and blackberry fruit flavors bound together by singed cedar, iron and tobacco notes. Features a tug of loam followed by a second wave of fruit through the finish. This is just starting to stretch out. Blind ’01/’03/’05 Bordeaux retrospective (December 2017). Best from 2020 through 2040. Score: 96 (James Molesworth, winespectator.com, 2018)

699181 (XD) 750 mL $540.00

BURGUNDYCÔTE DE NUITSRED WINE

LOUIS LATOUR LES SUCHOTS VOSNE-ROMANÉE 1ER CRU 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: Blackberries and black tea with wet earth and roses on the nose. Medium-bodied, tight and focused with silky tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Shows focus and beauty already. Better after 2021. Score: 93 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, Feb. 12, 2019)

8 VINTAGES

LOUIS JADOT LA DOMINODE SAVIGNY-LÈS-BEAUNE 1ER CRU 2014AC

TASTING NOTE: The restrained nose is slightly riper with a darker fruit profile and copious amounts of warm earth character along with subtle spice and sauvage elements. There is an impressively intense and attractively textured palate impression to the sleekly muscular and well-concentrated flavors that culminate in a serious, long and beautifully complex though mildly austere finish. Worth considering if you’re willing to cellar it. Drink: 2021+. Score: 89-91 (Allen Meadows, burghound.com, April 15, 2016)

634949 (XD) 750 mL $58.00

DOMAINE DE COURCEL POMMARD GRAND CLOS DES ÉPENOTS 1ER CRU 2009AC

TASTING NOTE: Here too there is a hint of menthol to the less elegant but more complex nose that displays a dazzling array of spice, floral, earth, underbrush and red currant aromas. There is outstanding richness to the powerful and velvet-textured big-bodied flavors brimming with ample amounts of dry extract that relegate the firm tannic spine to the background on the mouth coating and hugely long finish. This is a burly and quite serious effort that is not especially rustic though one that will require plenty of cellar time to reach its peak. Drink: 2029+. Outstanding. Score: 94 (Allen Meadows, burghound.com, April 1, 2012)

10714 (XD) 750 mL $260.00

ROCHE DE BELLENE VOLNAY CLOS DES CHÊNES 1ER CRU 2004AC

Clos des Chênes is a distinguished premier cru vineyard in Volnay. It’s planted solely to Pinot Noir, and the wines grown in this terroir are among the very best Volnay has to offer. The grapes benefit greatly from the southerly aspect and excellent sun exposure that the hill provides. The resulting wines are typically rich and fresh, with intense ripe red fruit and excellent structure. These are wines of character and substance with great ageing potential.

MARCHAND-TAWSE MOREY-SAINT-DENIS FACONNIERES 1ER CRU 2016AC (Pascal Marchand)

TASTING NOTE: The 2016 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Faconnieres has a fine red cherry and redcurrant pastille-scented bouquet that is pure and quite Chambolle-like. The palate is well balanced with good density, fine tannin, crisp acidity and a very impressive mineralité on the finish. I like the symmetry of this Morey-Saint-Denis and it should age well over the next dozen or so years. Drink Date: 2020-2033. Score: 90-92 (Neal Martin, robertparker.com, Dec. 29, 2017)

469163 (XD) 750 mL $106.00

DOMAINE CLOS FRANTIN CHAMBERTIN GRAND CRU 2014AC(Albert Bichot)

TASTING NOTE: This wine is dense, although you hardly notice the tannins for the weight of concentrated fruit. The tannins are there, though, a power to thrust this immense wine well into the future. It is well formed, firm while rich. Drink from 2024. Cellar Selection. Score: 96 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, Aug. 1, 2016)

10185 (XD) 750 mL $572.00

CÔTE DE BEAUNERED WINE

DENIS PÈRE ET FILS PERNAND-VERGELESSES 2016AC

An archetypal Burgundian expression from what Jancis Robinson, MW, has described as “... a seriously delicious vintage” (jancisrobinson.com, Jan. 6, 2018). Look for bright, freshly articulated red fruit with underlying spice and mineral. This will be a notable addition to your cellar and a standout when paired with rabbit or braised lamb.

559906 (XD) 750 mL $47.00

The 2004 vintage was a challenging one, but as with all things, time has brought many gems to the surface, and the best are now rewarding patience and drinking very well.

636621 (XD) 750 mL $123.00

PRESTIGE CLOS DU ROI BEAUNE 1ER CRU 1995AC(Robert Ampeau et Fils)

The Clos du Roi vineyard is regarded as one of the best parcels in Beaune. It was once responsible for much of the wines served to the French kings at Versailles. This one from Robert Ampeau et Fils will have evolved flavours of dried herbs and fruit, but these are wines built for longevity, and you will encounter a wine that’s still retaining considerable freshness and vitality in its red fruit. Expect an elegant, refined wine, with mineral, earth and smoke notes wrapped around a core of red cherry. This 24-year-old will have many years ahead of it yet.

699975 (XD) 750 mL $120.00

WHITE WINE

LOUIS JADOT PULIGNY- MONTRACHET 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: Aromas of fresh peaches, lemon, blanched almonds and anise introduce the 2017 Puligny-Montrachet (Maison Louis Jadot), a medium-bodied, juicy and open-knit wine that’s already giving and expressive. This will drink well out of the gates. Score: 87-89 (William Kelley, robertparker.com, Jan. 31, 2019)

562215 (XD) 750 mL $107.00

DOMAINE BOUCHARD PÈRE & FILS MEURSAULT GENEVRIÈRES 1ER CRU 2016AC

TASTING NOTE: Residual SO2 is sufficient to dominate the nose today. Marvelously energetic and intensely mineral-driven flavors also possess excellent cut that characterizes the bitter lemon and saline-inflected finish that delivers seriously fine length. This chiseled effort

9 VINTAGES

SYLVAIN MOSNIER BEAUROY CHABLIS 1ER CRU 2016AC

Sylvain Mosnier has been family-run and -operated for over 30 years. This premier cru will be racy and vibrant, with a little more heft than one typically associates with Chablis. Expect a round, textured wine that will offer well-articulated citrus, apple, pear and a refined, shapely minerality. A great option for shellfish, seared scallops or baked crab. Given its textured style, you might also want to try it with veal.

488817 (XD) 750 mL $38.00

WILLIAM FÈVRE BOUGROS CÔTE BOUGUEROTS CHABLIS GRAND CRU 2016AC

TASTING NOTE: The 2016 Chablis Grand Cru Bougros Cote de Bouguerots has a very intense, quite mineral-driven bouquet with flint aromas developing all the time in the glass as it gains intensity. The palate is well balanced with fine salinité on the entry. I appreciate the vivacity of this grand cru – there is plenty of energy locked in here and an edginess on the finish that is very appealing, notwithstanding the prolonged spicy aftertaste. Superb. Drink Date: 2020-2035. Score: 93-95 (Neal Martin, robertparker.com, Aug. 31, 2017)

391268 (XD) 750 mL $133.00

is almost Chablis-like and will require at least a few years of bottle age first. Sweet spot, Outstanding. Drink 2024+. Score: 93 (Allen Meadows, burghound.com, June 15, 2015)

87049 (XD) 750 mL $123.00

LOUIS LATOUR CORTON- CHARLEMAGNE GRAND CRU 2016AC

TASTING NOTE: This is a formidable white that grows on the palate with dried apples, pears, lemons and hints of lime. Full-bodied, tight and focused. This is a tight and powerful wine. Phenolic and bright. This is an ager as always. Get it on release. Score: 96 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, Feb. 15, 2018)

41756 (XD) 750 mL $265.00

CHABLISWHITE WINE

DOMAINE PINSON FRÈRES LES CLOS CHABLIS GRAND CRU 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: This is the less wooded of the two Les Clos bottlings from the Pinsons, but it’s still quite a rich, powerful style. It’s dense and complex, with notes of baking spices, subtle stone fruit and a saline, minerally flourish. Drinking Window: 2020-2028. Score: 96 (Tim Atkin, MW, decanter.com, Oct. 16, 2018)

209049 (XD) 750 mL $97.00

ALBERT BICHOT LES CLOS CHABLIS GRAND CRU 2016AC

TASTING NOTE: Smooth and fluid with a very intense lime-citrus thread as well as some grapefruit. Long and powerful acid line. An elegant, powerful and stony finish. Drink or hold. Score: 94 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, Aug. 31, 2018)

10184 (XD) 750 mL $107.00

RHÔNENORTHERN RHÔNERED WINE

M. CHAPOUTIER LES BÉCASSES CÔTE-RÔTIE 2016AC

TASTING NOTE: The medium-bodied 2016 Cote Rotie les Bécasses is a blend of several parcels along the entire length of the appellation, from Saint-Cyr in the north through Ampuis to Tupin and Semons in the south. It offers a mixture of pepper and herbs, tart red fruit and crushed stone, supported by fine-grained tannins and ample length. Not particularly round or generous, it’s more about silk and elegance. Drink Date: 2018-2030. Score: 92 (Joe Czerwinski, robertparker.com, Oct. 31, 2018)

280420 (XD) 750 mL $100.00

WHITE WINE

ROMAIN DUVERNAY CONDRIEU 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: Duvernay’s 2017 Condrieu seems to have avoided the sunny excesses of the vintage, offering nectarine and apricot notes in a plump, medium to full-bodied format. It’s fruit-driven and zesty, with melon rounding out the mid-palate and citrus joining in on the long finish. Drink Date: 2018-2020. Score: 92 (Joe Czerwinski, robertparker.com, Dec. 28, 2018)

10221 (XD) 750 mL $86.00

LAURUS HERMITAGE 2016AC(Gabriel Meffre)

TASTING NOTE: Lovely, with jasmine, acacia and warm brioche notes leading off, followed by very pure and creamy textured flavors of white peach, yellow apple and heather. Reveals a light paraffin hint through the finish, with the fruit and floral notes pulling together. Marsanne. Drink now through 2028. Score: 94 (James Molesworth, winespectator.com, Nov. 15, 2018)

SOUTHERN RHÔNERED WINE

DOMAINE BOSQUET DES PAPES À LA GLOIRE DE MON GRAND-PÈRE CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE 2016AC

TASTING NOTE: Drawn from a single parcel in the lieu-dit of Gardiole (mostly sandy soils), half of the fruit was destemmed. It’s full-bodied and concentrated but silky and refined, with scintillating purity of cherry and raspberry fruit, backed by crisp acids and enlivening hints of orange zest on the long, reverbe-rating finish. It’s a terrific value that should drink well for more than a decade. Drink Date: 2018-2035. Score: 96 (Joe Czerwinski, robertparker.com, Aug. 31, 2018)

10405 (D) 750 mL $76.00

DOMAINE DE BEAURENARD BOISRENARD CHÂTEAUNEUF- DU-PAPE 2016AC

TASTING NOTE: More complex and nuanced as well as powerful, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Boisrenard is a field blend (two-thirds Grenache and the rest a mix of varieties) that spent 18 months in a combination of older barrels, new barrels, and foudre. Its deep purple/ruby color is followed by a sensational perfume of blackberries, black raspberries, Asian spices, and graphite. With full-bodied richness, building tannin, remarkable purity, and a huge finish, it’s going to rival the 2001 as the best vintage to date. You should have this in your cellar. Drink Date: 2021-2041. Score: 98 (Jeb Dunnuck, jebdunnuck.com, Aug. 28, 2018)

964585 (D) 750 mL $97.00

DOMAINE DE LA VIEILLE JULIENNE LES HAUTS-LIEUX CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE 2016AC

TASTING NOTE: A true “wow” wine, the deep, concentrated 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Hauts-Lieux (there’s 20% Mourvèdre) offers awesome notes of blackcurrants, smoked meats, graphite,

crushed rocks, and licorice. Extra-ordinarily concentrated, perfectly balanced, structured, and long, it’s another sensational wine from this estate. It needs 4-5 years of bottle age and will cruise for 15-20 after that. Drink Date: 2022-2042. Score: 99 (Jeb Dunnuck, jebdunnuck.com, Aug. 28, 2018)

446815 (XD) 750 mL $142.00

TARDIEU-LAURENT CUVÉE SPÉCIALE CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE 2016AC

TASTING NOTE: The tiny production 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Spéciale is Grenache dominated and comes from 100-year-old vines planted in the sandy portions of the famed la Crau lieu-dit. It looks to be one of the stars in the vintage. Blackberries, pepper, violets, and earth all emerge from this full-bodied, massively concentrated Grenache that has sweet tannin, no hard edges and the opulence and purity of this sensational vintage. Score: 95-97 (Jeb Dunnuck, jebdunnuck.com, Oct. 19, 2017)

DOMAINE BARVILLE ROUSSANNE CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: There are just over 200 cases of the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc Roussanne, sourced from a limestone-rich parcel in the Beau Renard lieu-dit. Mostly barrel fermented and aged in new oak, it’s a full-bodied, luscious wine that some tasters may find too rich and too ripe (I certainly found that to be the case last vintage). This year, in addition to the honeyed waves of tropical fruit, pineapple and tangerine, there’s a zesty edge of citrus that helps drive the wine forward and provides energy on the finish. It should drink well for 6-7 years, although why wait? Drink Date: 2018-2025. Score: 92 (Joe Czerwinski, robertparker.com, Aug. 31, 2018)

The grapes for this wine were sourced from soils featuring limestone, marl and sandstone and were grown using organic and biodynamic practices. After being hand-picked and fermented with indigenous yeasts, they spent 10 months in barrel. The resulting wine will have a refined elegance and will suggest smoke and butter notes atop the honeyed fruit tones. The producer recommends pairing with foie gras or caramelized pork ribs.

Then dense, tactile and tight in the mouth, communicating superb energy and perfume to the concentrated flavors of ripe citrus fruits and powdered minerals. The penetrating, slowly rising finish offers an almost magically mouthcoating combination of roundness and vibrant acidity; this seamless wine is loaded with insidious sweetness. TASTING NOTE: Laurent-Perrier has always preferred to keep its prestige cuvée as a nonvintage blend. With eight years aging after bottling and plenty of reserve wines in the blend, it is a mature wine that is yeasty and toasty in character. TASTING NOTE: Bara’s 2006 Brut Grand Cru Comtesse Marie de France, 100% Pinot Noir, is superb. Ample and creamy on the palate, with terrific freshness and overall intensity, the 2006 is incredibly expressive today. Hints of lemon confit, chamomile, dried herbs, yellow orchard fruit and dried flowers all grace this exquisite, inviting Champagne. TASTING NOTE: The 2017 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese is made from grapes harvested at a full 96° Oechsle in the prime Lieu-Dit Wertspitz, Keller and Münzlay. It reveals some delicate and refined scents including anise, yellow peach, candied grapefruit, spices and herbs. These are joined by a touch more ripeness as pineapple and pear join the party. The wine is elegantly smooth and creamy on the palate and develops more presence and density in the long and playful finish. Although full-bodied and undeniably ripe (the alcohol is 15.5% but there’s no heat), it’s far from monolithic, showcasing complexity and elegance rather than brute power. I’ve been deliberately conservative with my aging estimate because of the wine’s lack of track record and relatively young vine age in the Syrah and Mourvèdre components, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see it drink well for longer. TASTING NOTE: The red flagship 2006 Viña Tondonia Reserva was inspired by the vineyards of the Médoc but produced with local grapes, 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacho, 5% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo, which achieved 13% alcohol in 2006. It always matures in used American oak barriques for some six years. The oldest of all the reds I tasted, it was also the one with more freshness, which speaks to the quality of the vineyard. ONTARIORED WINE DOMAINE QUEYLUS RÉSERVE DU DOMAINE CABERNET FRANC 2016VQA Niagara Peninsula

TASTING NOTE: “I think the best grape in Ontario is Cabernet Franc,” says Charest. This Cabernet Franc (with a touch of Merlot) is simply beautiful in every aspect. Just a fabulous nose of savoury red fruits, black currants, anise, graphite, iron and integrated herbs and spices. It’s rich, layered and textured on the palate with a range of red fruits, black currants, herbs, spice, minerals and length through a clean and polished finish. This is already showing well, so can’t wait for it to be released. Score: 94 (Rick VanSickle, winesinniagara.com, Oct. 11, 2018)

GIANT STEPS APPLEJACK PINOT NOIR 2017Yarra Valley, Victoria

TASTING NOTE: The bouquet is a perfumed mix of red fruit blossom, the red berry flavours of the palate symbiotically joined with the bouquet. It is a wine of exquisite purity and detail in its texture, and as befits a pinot of this quality, the palate is very long, the peacock’s tail opening on the finish. Drink By: 2027. Astonishing colour, all dark ruby and bright with purple tinges, the tannins velvety and savoury, the finish long. Every detail taken care of and the end result a complete wine. TASTING NOTE: Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2014 Run Rig opens with a bang, delivering intense fruits of the forest and blackberry preserve notes with hints of sandalwood, cardamom, dried Provence herbs, Indian spices and garrigue. Full-bodied, rich, concentrated and oh, so satisfying, the beauty ticks all the great Barossa Shiraz boxes and then some. fermentation. I get more ripeness and more relevance of the fruit here. There is no irrigation here, and the grapes get concentrated, even if the alcohol is lower. This has more concentration, depth, power and potential – it’s very fine but discreet, a little shy and in need of time in bottle. There is an extra dimension here compared with Refugio, and it’s juicy, with perfectly ripe tannins. The difference is that they had so very little grapes that they had to use two 700-liter concrete eggs, where the fermentation temperature never reached above 20 degrees Celsius; so, the fermentation was also very slow, akin to cooking at low temperature in a cocotte instead of in the microwave. This has incredible aging potential – it’s still super young and primary, and André Ostertag described it as the proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove. It has a tasty, almost salty finish. Only 1,500 bottles were produced from two small concrete eggs, because they had almost no grapes! It was bottled in February, before the 2018 harvest. Drink Date: 2018-2024. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, ripe and demonstrating impressive density plus a firm grip. This really coats the mouth in tannin, although it is still balanced. It just needs another 4-5 years in bottle, the stubborn little lady. Tasted January 2016. Drink Date: 2019-2035. Score: 91 (Neal Martin, robertparker.com, May 29, 2016)

CHAMPAGNE

MOËT & CHANDON MCIII CHAMPAGNEAC

TASTING NOTE: ... Moët seeks the perfect “balance between harmony and generous complexity” by blending young vintages aged in stainless steel vats (I), with matured vintages aged in oak casks (II), and rare vintages aged in glass bottles (III) ... steel-fermented vins clairs of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the vintage 2003, which were blended together in 2004 and comprise 40% of the cuvée (I); another 40% blends the declared vintages 2002, 2000 and 1998 that were mainly fermented in large oak vats and kept as vins clairs for Moët’s Grand Vintage (II); and the final 20% assembles the Grand Vintage Collection Champagnes 1999, 1998 and 1993, which had already undergone the second fermentation, but had not been disgorged yet (III). The “ultimate expression of blending” was created in 2004 and kept for ten years on the lees of the second (respectively third) fermentation. The cuvée 001.14 was disgorged in 2014 as Brut with a dosage of four or five grams per liter. The expensive wine offers a fascinatingly deep and concentrated bouquet that is very clear and fresh in its fruit aromas, but also delivers complex secondary aromas of coffee, nougat, biscuits and many more flavors. Full-bodied, ripe and intense on the palate, this is a rich and powerful, yet round and highly elegant cuvée of great complexity and persistence. ORNELLAIA 2016DOC Bolgheri Superiore

TASTING NOTE: The 2016 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia is a wine of extreme complexity and precision. It offers monumental depth with profound layers of black fruit, coffee, licorice and baking chocolate. I tasted this 2016 vintage beside the less-impactful 2015 vintage (which was reviewed last year). These two editions are very different when compared side to side, and this 2016 release is clearly superior in terms of the quality, clarity and intensity of its offerings. This Ornellaia delivers glossy shine and a polished texture that segues to important richness, concentration and textural fiber. It wraps thickly over the palate, imparting waves of sweet dark fruit and dark spice that linger for many long minutes. TIGNANELLO 2016IGT Toscana

TASTING NOTE: To hit the market in June, the 2016 Tignanello is a rock-solid wine and a stunning beauty. The wine offers an impeccable level of precision and laser-focus delivery of fruits, spices, tilled earth, espresso beans and Mediterranean herbs. This vintage follows the classic blending formula of 80% Sangiovese with about 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Cabernet Franc. The vines are now 15 to 20 years old. Compared to the 2015 vintage that ultimately appeared more chewy and succulent, this expression from the iconic 2016 vintage is more vibrant, nervous and jazzed. It shows more savory spice, saltiness and minerality, with a beautifully integrated quality of tannins. Some 320,000 bottles were produced. It is principally, for identified grapes, mainly Alvarelhão, Tinta Pinheira, Touriga Nacional, Jaen and Tinta Amarela. Plus, since 1991, Castro uses some Jaen and Touriga Nacional. It was aged for 24 months in well-used French barriques (five to seven years old) and comes in at 13.3% alcohol. This was sourced from Pellada’s Block 4 of Mata (forest) and Block 2 of Casa (house). ALTOS LAS HORMIGAS GUALTALLARY MALBEC 2016Uco Valley, Mendoza

TASTING NOTE: My favorite of the collection, the 2016 Malbec Appellation Gualtallary is a wild and structured expression of the grape, place and vintage. Produced with grapes grown at 1,300 meters in altitude, it fermented in concrete vats with indigenous yeasts and aged in untoasted 3,500-liter French oak foudres for some 22 months. It comes from two selected plots in Gualtallary and has a very perfumed nose that is intoxicating, with notes of decayed violets, wild herbs and an

earthy touch. The palate is pure chalk, with mineral notes, ultra refined tannins and a dry, tasty finish. This has a similar character to the Reserve, with higher minerality and the added freshness of 2016. This has to be one of the best wines ever produced at Altos Las Hormigas. ZORZAL WINES EGGO TINTO DE TIZA 2016Uco Valley, Mendoza

TASTING NOTE: The incredible 2016 Eggo Tinto de Tiza was cropped from one of the coolest years in recent times, which provided a slow ripening of the grapes and resulted in wines with higher natural acidity. This wine is now exclusively Malbec from Gualtallary (it used to have some Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon before). It fermented with 10% full clusters and indigenous yeasts in egg-shaped concrete vats, where the wine matured for ten months. It’s super aromatic, with notes of thyme, oregano, spices and something earthy, like the countryside after the rain. It’s young and has an explosive, vibrant palate with electric acidity and chalky tannins. 2016 could very well be the finest vintage to date, one of those vintages that will be legendary. It’s very floral, gentle, with fine tannins with a good structure based on a combination with superb acidity. This is also lighter colored, the more Pinot of the three. Some 3,000 bottles were filled in December 2015. Drink Date: 2016-2023. Score: 96 (Luis Gutiérrez, robertparker.com, Dec. 30, 2016)

MONTES FOLLY SYRAH 2015Colchagua Valley

TASTING NOTE: Such ‘wow’ factor from the 2015 Montes Folly. The grapes are dry-farmed from an exceptionally steep single vineyard in Colchagua, and this

never fails to impress. It’s purple hued from rim to core, steadfastly opaque. Intense blueberry and blackberry aromas unfurl from the glass, while the dense, fruit-laden palate exhibits pepper, juniper, bilberries and kirsch, providing a long, hedonistic finish. 24 months ageing in new French oak has been completely subsumed by the welter of ripe, full fruit, lusciously upholstered with sleek, glistening tannins and life-giving acidity. Magnificently compelling. Drinking Window: 2020-2032. Score: 96 (John Stimpfig, decanter.com, Nov. 16, 2018)

VIÑA SEÑA 2015Aconcagua Valley

TASTING NOTE: Stunning aromas of blackcurrant, stone, blueberry and licorice. Also iodine. Floral. Perfumed. Full body, fantastic density of fruit and ripe tannins. It goes on for minutes on the palate with such energy and focus. Touch of chewiness on the finish. A complex and complete wine that delivers a generosity with firmness. Drink in 2021 but already a classic to drink. Score: 100 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, May 29, 2017)

MAQUIS FRANCO 2013Colchagua Valley

TASTING NOTE: Again, the cooler vintage seems to have favored the 2013 Franco, which came through as complex, compact, powerful and elegant. This time it’s not a pure varietal, as it contains some 6% Cabernet Sauvignon in the final blend. This is a Cabernet Franc all about finesse but with enough power and character. It’s very floral and exuberant, very showy, a little riper than the Viola from this same year. 9,800 bottles produced. Drink Date: 2017-2023. TASTING NOTE: Deep garnet-purple, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Rattlesnake gives up notes of baked blackberries, crème de cassis and blueberry pie with hints of Marmite toast, chocolate box, menthol and cigar box. Full-bodied, the richly fruited palate delivers mouth-filling black berry preserves and savory layers with a compelling backbone of freshness and velvety tannins, finishing on a lingering minty note. TASTING NOTE: A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, 6% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Poetry needs a little coaxing to begin to unfurl the tightly wound yet exciting scents of blackcurrant cordial, blackberry preserves, warm redcurrants and kirsch plus fragrant nuances of candied violets, underbrush, cigar boxes, menthol and star anise. Full-bodied and built like a brick house in the mouth, the palate features an almost impenetrable structure of super ripe tannins framing the taut, muscular fruit, finishing long. This beauty needs at least 5-6 years to begin to blossom, after which it may well warrant a perfect score. Drink Date: 2021-2051. FEL SAVOY VINEYARD PINOT NOIR 2016Anderson Valley, Mendocino County

TASTING NOTE: This concentrated and fruit-packed wine from a storied vineyard walks the line between ripeness and restraint. Flavors of black cherry and blackberry fill the palate, bolstered by a mildly firm feel. It offers plenty to appreciate now and is worth cellaring through 2024. Cellar Selection. L’AVENTURE ESTATE CUVÉE 2016Paso Robles

TASTING NOTE: A wine that flirts with perfection is the 2016 Estate Cuvée, which is 52% Syrah, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance Petit Verdot, all of which spent 15 months in new French oak. Deep ruby/purple-colored, with a masculine bouquet of crème de cassis, graphite, liquid rock-like minerality, and lead pencil shavings, it reminds me of a top 2010 Pomerol with its opulence, power, and purity. Hitting the palate with full body, a layered, seamless, multi-dimensional texture, and present yet polished tannins, this beauty is one of the finest examples of this cuvée yet produced. Give bottles 2-3 years and it will keep for 15+. Drink Date: 2018-2021. Score: 99 (Jeb Dunnuck, jebdunnuck.com, Nov. 29, 2018)

L’AVENTURE OPTIMUS 2016Paso Robles

TASTING NOTE: Moving to the wines from bottle and starting with the 2016 Optimus, which is always a great introduction into the wines of this estate, it’s a blend of 50% Syrah, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 20% Petit Verdot that spent 14 months in 60% new barrels. This full-bodied, rich yet also elegant and lively red gives up a big, sweet nose of crème de cassis, toasted spice, licorice, and graphite. With good acidity and impressive finesse and elegance as well as richness, it’s a no-brainer purchase to drink over the coming 7-8 years.

Full-bodied, rich and concentrated in the mouth, the ripe, opulent black fruit is well supported by velvety tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long and spicy. Drink Date: 2018-2038. TASTING NOTE: A blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot and 3% Merlot, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve Georges de Latour was aged for 22 months in French oak barrels, 88% new. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it gives up compelling kirsch, sautéed herbs, crème de cassis and baked plums notes with touches of tobacco, fallen leaves and dried mint. Full-bodied (14.9% alcohol) and solidly structured with firm, chewy tannins in the mouth, the palate is packed with muscular fruit lifted by herbal accents, finishing long and savory. TASTING NOTE: Bottled in December and sourced from sites mostly in the Russian River (there’s a small amount of Sonoma Coast in here), the 2016 Chardonnay One Sixteen is the larger production cuvée of the estate and could be thought of as the flagship Chardonnay. It reveals the fresher, crisper style of all the wines from Kosta Browne today and has lively notes of green citrus, stone fruits, toasted almonds, and white flowers. BRITTAN VINEYARDS CYGNUS BLOCK PINOT NOIR 2015Willamette Valley

TASTING NOTE: Sourced from a 2008 planting of the Swan clone, rare in Oregon, the new vintage is significantly riper than the 2014. Fermented and aged in 30% new French oak, it shows more of the sweet barrel spices than its stablemates, along with cured meats and muted notes of rock. Tart blackberry and cherry fruit carry the precisely defined core. The wine is stylish, powerful and supremely detailed. This quality at this price is a bargain. Editors’ Choice. FONSECA VINTAGE PORT 2016DOP

TASTING NOTE: On this second look, this Fonseca is still remarkably expressive, lifted and gloriously fresh, even with that slight closing. It has reasonable mid-palate concentration but even better intensity of flavor. Despite that intensity of flavor, it is not quite as sexy as it is in some years, at least not yet, as the tannins are firmly in charge. That isn’t changing anytime soon. This rather stern Fonseca simply revels in its brilliant structure. This is a Port that demands cellaring if you want it to be all it can be. You and it will profit from at least 10 more years of cellaring. Doubling that will help a lot more. Drink Date: 2030-2075. Score: 97 (Mark Squires, robertparker.com, Dec. 28, 2018)

WHAT AREFUTURES?

Each spring, critics and buyers from around the world sample the wines of Bordeaux’s newest vintage while they’re in barrel. When the reviews are in, customers buy the wines in advance; two years later they’re bottled and delivered. Why buy wines this way? They may cost more once they hit stores (or may never be in stores at all) and, while serious collectors buy them as an investment, it’s a great way for anyone to try top wines at potentially lower prices.

... I can tell you that 2018 is an exceptional year for Bordeaux wines.

Overall, 2018 is evolving into an exceptional vintage. It was clearly a winemaker’s vintage, where they could control concentration rather than having to chase it. It was refreshing to see many châteaux focusing on creating wines with harmony and balance that were true to their house style (rather than simply maximizing output). The result is a range of exceptional wines from the top châteaux, as well as many excellent values at the petit château level.
