Beauty- by E-Yeh-Shure

Beauty is seenIn the sunlight,

The trees, the birds,Corn growing and people working

Or dancing for their harvest.

Beauty is heardIn the night,

Wind sighing, rain falling,Or a singer chantingAnything in earnest.

Beauty is in yourelf.Good deeds, happy thoughts

That repeat themselvesIn your dreams,

In your work,And even in your rest.

Critical Analysis of the Poem “Beauty”

Let us read the poem and analyze it (the poem is read once before a detailed study on it):

The poem is very simple yet beautiful.

The rhyming scheme used in the poem is quite unusual. Only the last lines of each stanza rhyme with regularity. There are other lines wherein we find many similar sounding words.

Similar sounding words like growing, working, dancing, sighing, falling, chanting, etc. are used in the first two stanzas to create a sense of rhyme.

Choice of vocabulary and language used in the poem is very simple and easy to understand.

The use of figures of speech, Personification, is found in the poem in the first two stanzas mainly through the words, such as, beauty seen and heard, wind sighing, rain falling, etc.

Critical Analysis of the Poem “Beauty”

Through the first stanza the poetess stresses upon the fact that beauty is present there in the sunlight, the trees, the birds, the crops, the people’s work, and so on.

All these various aspects of nature perform their respective task for the wellbeing of all beings, in the sense, that there is a certain mutuality among all these aspects. Each of them do good to each other and thus strike a proper balance which is a beauty in itself.

In the second stanza she goes a step further and says that beauty is heard, as if being a human person or something, in the night, in the winds, in the rains, and in the singer with a sincere and intense chanting and singing.

Night is the time for rest and the poetess hears the presence of beauty in the silence of dark nights and other aspects of nature, which is further enhanced by the enchanting voice of the singer.

Critical Analysis of the Poem “Beauty”

The sense of the presence of beauty gets intensified in the third stanza wherein the poetess states that there is beauty in you, in others, in me, and in all beings, in their good deeds, happy thoughts, in the dreams, in all sorts of work, and even in the moments of resting.

To stress the presence of beauty in the minuteness of all the poetess says that whether people are engaged in variety of works or sleeping there is beauty in everything, everywhere and in everyone.

The term ‘rest’ could also mean ‘the end of earthly life’ and thus entering into the realm of eternity which is the beauty eternal.

Critical Analysis of the Poem “Beauty”

Thus, the poetess, through the poem “beauty”, convinces us in a gentle yet firm manner with a sense of conviction that “beauty” is everywhere, in the things around, in the birds and insects, in the fields and crops, in every being, in every thought and in dreams, in the works, and even in the time of rest.

In short, beauty is everywhere and everywhere has beauty; beauty is in everyone and everyone is encompassed in the eternity of beauty.

The message that we get from the poem is that worldly materials don’t count much than the natural beauties that are constantly present before us. It is not only believed but known that many people are to blind to such beautiful truth. Most people can realize it though and that would be a great, beautiful accomplishment in itself.

A few questions and suggested answers

How does the poetess define beauty? Beauty is in all the aspects of nature. All good things, good actions,

and all that pleases are beautiful. Why do people dance for their harvest?

People dance for their harvest because they are pleased to gather their crops and are content with the fruits of their labour in the harvest field.

Can you name some beautiful things seen or heard? The beautiful things like chirping birds, whistling breeze, swaying

tree branches, laughing children, smiling old folks, thundering sea waves, soothing sea shores and many other aspects of nature can be seen or heard.

Beauty is in yourself. How do you say that? One can feel beauty in oneself, in others, in variety of things, and so

on. Noble deeds, kind words, generous and loving thoughts, and acts of love and charity make us beautiful.

Where does beauty lie? Beauty lies in the happy thoughts, kind words, good deeds and

actions.
