Twenty years ago our industry couldbe epitomised as a ‘muscles and legwarmer’ business. The business model, which underpinned our rapid expansion, could probably be summed up by thatgreat Kevin Costner line ‘if we build itthey will come.’

Today life is very different. We look toinitiatives such as Let’s Dance WithChange4Life as a footfall catalyst, GPReferrals as a potential new revenuestream and the concept of ‘beyond thegym’ as a community engagementstrategy designed to defend and growour presence in our own ‘local markets.’These two ages of our industry are asfar removed from each other as theblack and white images on the earlyTVs are to today’s 200 channelentertainment beaming out on TVsthe size of small cars.

Today the talk in our industry is aboutpsychology and soft skills.

Every fitness professional (from theboardroom to the gym floor) has started tocontemplate how he or she can engagewith the old, the young, the recovering andthe obese. What a far cry from our past(professional) obsession with just theyoung and the beautiful.

This is why there is a growing trend to lookat our industry from all angles. We havethe TwentyTen Commission and thisconference - both are vital to our individualand collective futures. If we are to becomemore relevant, to more people, moreoften, then we need to have a very clearidea of what we have to offer, the skillsrequired to deliver it, the tools we use toassess our effectiveness, the communitieswe have to engage with if we are toachieve our goals and, most importantly, the career strategies we deploy to improveour retention of the talent we attract, nurture and grow.

In addition, the Summit sessions, delivered by Directors of Addison Leeand Sport England as well as by seniorexecutives from Harvard, Kellogg’s andthe DH will give you valuable insights fromother organisations which have becomebrand leaders in their field.

This conference is designed to be thecatalyst which will kick start this processbut, the truth is, it can only plant the seed.

The conversations which follow - bothat the conference and back at your placeof work - will be the breeding ground foryour success.

We do hope you enjoy the conference -intellectually and socially - and thatit will give you something new toconsider, as well as something old tochallenge and change.

welcome
