PAGE EIGHT - SECOND SECTION - THE WAYNE COUNTY NEWS -WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2014 Call 931-722-5429 15 Words (JUST) $5.00 Wayne County News WCHS / CHS Girls Soccer Team Finishes 2014 Season On Tuesday, Sept. 30th, the combined WCHS/ CHS girls soccer team traveled to Adamsville to face the Lady Cardinals. Wayne County was missing several starters, and Adamsville dominated the rst half. The ball was mostly in Wayne County’s half, with goalie Jessie Ray needing to make 15 saves to keep the ball out of the net. With only a minute left in the half, Karli Witt got a feed pass to her sister Presley, who got a quick shot past the Lady Cardinal goalie to give Wayne County a 1-0 lead at half-time. The second half was a bit more balanced, with Wayne County generating more offense, but luck was on the side of Adamsville, as they scored 4 unanswered goals to win the game 4-1. Jessie made a total of 22 saves in the game. On Monday, Oct. 5th, the team travelled to Selmer to face the McNairy Central Lady Bobcats. Again, the game was unbalanced in favor of the opponents. McNairy controlled the ball most of the time, tho Wayne County did get several fast breaks generated by striker Reagan Skelton. McNairy scored 2 goals to go into half-time with a 2-0 lead. The second half started with 2 more quick goals for McNairy, followed by 3 in the middle of the half. Finally, with about 6 minutes left in the game, Reagan got a hard left-footed shot that the McNairy goalie could only deect. Presley was there to put in the rebound for a goal. McNairy got one last fast break goal to win 8-1. Jessie had 15 saves in the game. On Thursday, Oct. 8th, Wayne County traveled to Brentwood to face the top-ranked Christ Presbyterian Academy Lady Lions in the quarternal round of the district tournament. Wayne County was without goaile Jessie Ray, who had been injured in the McNairy game; backup goalie Taylor Bevis started in goal. CPA dominated the game, with crisp passing and lots of overlapping runs that gave the WC defense a lot of trouble. They scored 5 goals in the rst 20 minutes, and got one more later in the half on a high shot over Taylor’s hands to take a 6-0 lead into half-time. The second half continued like the rst, with CPA controlling the game. After CPA scored 3 more goals in the early part of the second half, luck turned toward Wayne County. Because of pressure from strikers Reagan & Presley, a CPA defender attempted to pass the ball back to her goalie. The pass was out of reach of the goalie, and went past her into the CPA goal. One last CPA goal made the nal score 10-1 CPA. Taylor had 6 saves in the game. With this loss, the team ended the 2014 season with an overall record of 1 win, 14 losses, and 1 tie. They were hampered by injuries to key players, which kept them playing below their best level. They will lose 7 seniors to graduation: Jayden Clanton, Tyler Downs, Cassie Mathis, Jessie Ray, McKenzie Rich, Reagan Skelton, and Karli Witt. Top scorer again this year was Reagan Skelton, with 5 goals and 3 assists. Presley Witt got 4 goals in her rst season, and McKenzie Rich got 2 goals and an assist. Cassie Mathis got a goal before her season was cut short by injury. Karli Witt got 2 assists, and Riley Sanders and McKenzie Lay each got one. The district coaches selected Reagan Skelton to represent Wayne County on the regular season All-District Team, and sweeper Tyler Downs was selected for the All- Tournament Team. Head coach Harvey Baker and assistant coach Shawon Fisher would like to thank all the parents, family, and other fans who supported the team throughout the season.
