JE SUIS PRÊTRE After the sponsored walk at the weekend for AID TO THE CHURCH IN NEED (i.e. for Christians persecuted for loving Jesus). Fr Cornelius remarked that it is “Christians of sub- stance” that are targeted by those who side with evil. The result is that evil targets priests. This is because priests, through the Sacrament of Holy Orders, are configured to Christ to stand in Christ’s place. History is the evidence of this - Jesus is murdered, the apostles are murdered, the Diocletian persecutions, the Recusant Era in our own country, the French Revolution, the Communist Revolutions. When the 4 Missionary of Charity Sis- ters were slain in their convent their priest chaplain, Fr Tom Uzhannalil was kidnapped and threatened with being crucified on Good Friday. He is still captive. After Father Jacques Hamel had his throat slit in Rouen, France this week by Daesh (ISIS), Arch- bishop of Rouen Domineque Lebrun said that “The Catholic Church has no weapons but prayer and the brotherhood of men and women”. The Parish Aid to the Church in Need Society gives thanks for the people of the Parish who donated, spon- sored and took part in the sponsored walk for our suffering brothers and sisters around the world. Saint Paul has a beau- tiful phrase for those Christians who are together in fellowship: “open wide your hearts” (2: Cor 6:11). After the Charlie Hebdo attacks we saw the solidarity displayed against such violence with the phrase “Je suis Charlie”. We should be saying that violence towards Christians, physical or verbal or economic or social, is also intolerable: “Je suis prête, je suis chrétien, je suis catholique” - “I am a priest, I am a Christian, I am Catholic”. The Parish Aid to the Church in Need Society meets once a month for prayers (next meeting Wednesday 17th August, 6pm in the Parish Church). To find out more please see the Parish Website. This symbol is the Arabic letter “nun”, the first letter of the word Nazarene. It is painted on Christian properties so that terrorists can identify them. Some Christians wear this symbol in solidarity with their brothers and sisters: “I am a Christian” REDDITCH CARMELITE SPIRITUALITY GROUP …. would like to express its gratitude to Father David Doran for including the first ever Recep- tions into the third Order of Carmel, Secular, during the celebration of Mass on our Patronal Feast Day. SAINTS & FEASTS FOR THE WEEK …

Monday Saint Alphonsus Mary de’Ligouri

(1696-1787) St Alphonsus was born in Naples, Italy. As a young man he was a lawyer, but later became a priest. He founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists). He was given the title Doctor of the Church for his writings on Moral Theology. A tireless apostle of the Eucharist and of our Blessed Mother, he worked with great zeal for the poor and the sick.

Tuesday Saints Eusebius of Vercelli or of

Saint Peter Julian Eymard

(+371) St eusebius was born in Sardinia and brought up in Rome. Around 340 he was named Bishop of Vercelli in Piedmont. He fought staunchly against the Arian heresy which denied the divinity of Jesus Christ. The Arians tortured and exiled him. (1811-1868) St Peter Julian eymard was born at La Mure, Isere, France, and joined the Marist Fathers. He dedicated his life to promoting Eucharis5tic devotion and founded both the Congre-gation of the Blessed Sacrament and the Servants of the Blessed Sacrament. Canonised in 1962 he is known as the ‘Apostle of the Eucharist’.

Thursday Saint John Mary Vianney

(1786-1859) He was born near Lyons, France, and ordained a priest in Grenoble. He was assigned to the parish of Ars-sur-Froman where he spent 42 years. He was outstanding for his steadfast care of souls, for his spirit of prayer and mortification, but above all, for his tireless dedication to the Sacrament of Penance. He spent most of his life in the confessional, drawing energy from his intimate and constant friendship with our Lord in the Eucharist. Pope Pius XI declared him Patron of the Univer-sal Clergy.

Friday Dedication of the Basilica of St

Mary

After the declaration of the dogma of the divine Maternity of the Blessed Virgin in the Council of Ephesus (431), Pope Sixtus III dedicated this Basilica in Rome in honour of the Mother of God. It was later called ‘St Mary Major.’ It is considered the oldest church in the west dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
