Professor Hassan has over 40 years of experience in the field of Archaeology and Anthropology. He is the emeritus Petrie Professor of Archaeology at one of the most outstanding centers of archaeological and cultural heritage management in Europe, the Institute of Archaeology at University College London. From 2009 he has been director of the Cultural Heritage Program at the French University in Egypt. Professor Hassan was the editor of the African Archaeological Review, and serves on the editorial board of many journals ranging from Holocene, which deals with Climatic Change, to Water Policy, revealing the breadth of Professor Hassan’s expertise. From 2003 until the present he has been a director of a geoarchaeological investigation of the Faiyum as part of the UCL Holocene Environmental Change and History of Water Management in the Faiyum Depression. In 2001, he edited A Strategic Approach to Egyptian Cultural Heritage Management – report sponsored by UNESCO WHC and UNDP - and directed the development of an action plan for the management of the sites of the St. Katherine Monastery area, recently declared a World Heritage Site. He has also written the benchmark book on Water and Civilization (with Jerri Della Priscoli), Dams and Cultural Heritage (with Steven Brandt), and The Archaeology of Farafra Oasis (with Barbara Barich) to add to his list of books including Demographic Archaeology (1981) and Droughts, Food and Culture: Ecological Change and Food Security in Africa’s Later Prehistory (2002). The last book reflects Prof. Hassan’s ongoing commitment to engage archaeology in contemporary human affairs.

Prof. Hassan has been closely engaged with UNESCO International Hydrological Program as a founding member of the ‘Water and Civilization’ Program. He has been commissioned to produce a benchmark document on Water and Civilization (with Jerri Della Priscoli). He serves as a member of the World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology on the (COMEST) Working Group on the Ethics of Freshwater Use, following his tenure as a member of the task force contributing to the historical perspective on the topic. He also served as a member of the UNESCO-Green Cross PC>CP Program (From Potential for Conflict to Co-operation Potential) contributing to the final report and the deliberations at the World Water Council in Kyoto. Professor Hassan as an archaeologist is concerned with the history and management of water heritage. He has co-edited with

Stephen Brandt Dams and Cultural Heritage Management (2006) with the aim of promoting the protection of cultural heritage endangered by the construction of dams. He has also proposed a “Water Heritage Working Group” within the World Water Council (currently under consideration) and a model project to engage peoples from the Nile Basin countries in writing their water history and protecting their water heritage. In 2005 he was elected President of the International Water History Association (IWHA) and in 2011 appointed Editor-in-chief of the forthcoming UNESCO benchmark reference series History of Water and Civilization (HWC). He serves on the editorial board of Water Policy.

Prof. Hassan is an avid fieldworker who has led and is still engaged in numerous expeditions to the Egyptian Sahara (Siwa, Farafra and Bahariya Oases), Upper Egypt (Nagada), Faiyum, Sinai, the Red Sea Hills and East Delta (Kafr Hassan Dawood) in Egypt as well as working in Algeria, Jordon and Nubia. Prof. Hassan combines his skills in archaeology with a geological background, which endows him with a scientific perspective and provides him with an understanding of geological hazards to cultural heritage as well as the tools to interpret climatic change and palaeoenvironments.
