PURPOSE OF THE GUIDEThe Fuel Economy Guide is published by the U.S. Departmentof Energy as an aid to consumers considering the purchase ofa new vehicle. The Guide lists estimates of miles per gallon(mpg) for each vehicle available for the new model year. Theseestimates are provided by the U.S. Environmental ProtectionAgency in compliance with Federal law.

This Guide is intended to help consumers compare the fueleconomy of similarly sized cars, light trucks, minivans, sportutility vehicles, and special purpose vehicles. The vehicles listedin this Guide have been divided into three classes of cars(sedans, two-seaters, and station wagons), three classes oflight trucks (vans, small pickups, and large pickups), and threeclasses of minivans, sport utility vehicles, and special purposevehicles (2-wheel drive, 4-wheel drive, and cab chassis).

By using this Guide, consumers can estimate the averageyearly fuel cost for any vehicle. The mileage figures includedin this Guide are most useful when comparing vehicles. Theactual mileage when driving a vehicle may differ considerablyfrom the predicted mileage. The range and mileage valueslisted in this Guide should be used for comparison purposesas the actual range and mileage values will vary with options, driving conditions, driving habits, and vehicle condition.

All new car and light truck dealers are required to have copiesof this Guide available and prominently displayed in theirshowrooms. The Department of Transportation is empoweredto penalize dealers who fail to display the Guides as prescribedby law.

Check the Fuel Economy Label on the vehicle at the dealersshowroom for its mpg ratings. The mpg will vary because ofengine emission controls and fuel system differences not listedin the Guide.

HOW THE FUEL ECONOMY ESTIMATES ARE OBTAINEDThe fuel economy estimates are based on results of testsrequired by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).These tests are used to certify that vehicles meet the Federalemissions and fuel economy standards. Manufacturers testpre-production prototypes of the new vehicle models and submitthe test results to EPA. EPA then confirms the accuracy of thefigures provided by the manufacturers. The vehicles are drivenby a professional driver under controlled laboratory conditions,on an instrument similar to a treadmill. These proceduresensure that each vehicle is tested under identical conditions;therefore, the results can be compared with confidence.

There are two different fuel economy estimates for each vehiclein this Guide, one for city driving and one for highway driving. To generate these two estimates, separate tests are used torepresent typical everyday driving in a city and in a rural setting.

The test used to determine the city fuel economy estimatesimulates a 7.5-mile, stop-and-go trip with an average speedof 20 miles per hour (mph). The trip takes 23 minutes and has18 stops. About 18 percent of the time is spent idling, as inwaiting at traffic lights or in rush hour traffic. Two kinds ofengine starts are usedthe cold start, which is similar tostarting a car in the morning after it has been parked all night;and the hot start, similar to restarting a vehicle after it hasbeen warmed up, driven, and stopped for a short time.

The test to determine the highway fuel economy estimaterepresents a mixture of non-city driving. Segmentscorresponding to different kinds of rural roads and interstatehighways are included. The test simulates a 10-mile trip andaverages 48 mph. The test is run from a hot start and has littleidling time and no stops (except at the end of the test).

NOTE: To make the numbers in the Fuel Economy Guide moreuseful for consumers, EPA adjusts these laboratory test resultsto account for the difference between controlled laboratoryconditions and actual driving on the road. The laboratory fueleconomy results are adjusted downward to arrive at theestimates in this booklet and on the labels seen on new cars, light trucks, and vans. The city estimate is lowered by 10percent and the highway estimate by 22 percent from thelaboratory test results. Experience has proven that theseadjustments make the mileage estimates in this Guidecorrespond more closely to the actual fuel economy realizedby the average driver.

INTERIOR VOLUMEThe interior volume is listed in the index for each body style (2-door, 4-door, and hatchback), except two-seaters and trucks,

and is a way of estimating the space in a car. The interiorvolume is given as two numbers in cubic feet (for example: 87/12). The first number is an estimate of the size of the passengercompartment. This number is based on four measurementshead room, shoulder room, hip room, and leg roomfor boththe front and rear seats. The second number is the size of thetrunk or, in station wagons and hatchbacks, the cargo spacebehind the second seat. In a few cases, the addition ofpassenger and cargo volume numbers in the table at the endof the Guide indicate that a vehicle should be in the next higherclassification. This is not the case as the average data in thistable have been rounded to the nearest whole number.

NOTE: Some larger van, pickup truck, and sport utility vehiclemodels belong to the heavy-duty vehicle category (vehiclesabove 8,500 pounds GVWR). Fuel economy regulations donot apply to heavy-duty vehicles. These models do not havefuel economy labels in the window and are not included in thisGuide.

GAS GUZZLER TAXThe Energy Tax Act of 1978 established a Gas Guzzler Tax onthe sale of new model year vehicles whose fuel economy failsto meet certain statutory levels. The fuel economy figuresused to determine the Gas Guzzler Tax are different from thefuel economy values contained in this booklet. The tax doesnot depend on your actual on-the-road mpg, which may bemore or less than the EPA published value.

The purpose of the Gas Guzzler Tax is to discourage theproduction and purchase of fuel inefficient vehicles. The amountof any applicable Gas Guzzler Tax paid by the manufacturerwill be disclosed on the automobiles fuel economy label.

FACTORS THAT CAN RAISE FUEL ECONOMY Combine errands into one trip. Turn an engine off rather than letting it idle for more than a minute. Get tune-ups regularly--the car will run more smoothly and efficienctly. Keep tires inflated to the manufacturers recommended maximum pressure. Anticipate traffic stops.

FACTORS THAT CAN LOWER FUEL ECONOMY Jackrabbit starts waste fuel. Traveling at higher speeds lowers fuel economy. Traveling at 65 mph instead of 55 mph lowers fuel economy over 13 percent. Carrying unnecessary weight in the vehicle wastes fuel. Revving the engine before it is shut off is not necessary for todays vehicles and will use more fuel. Operating a vehicle with the front wheels out of alignment uses more fuel.

FUEL ECONOMY AND CLIMATE CHANGEThe fuel economy of a vehicle is directly related to its emissionsof carbon dioxide, the most important greenhouse gas. Thetypes of vehicles covered in this Guide are responsible for about20 percent of total U.S. emissions of carbon dioxide.Greenhouse gases from transportation are increasing fasterthan from any other source.

Many scientists believe that the rapid build-up of greenhousegases in the atmosphere, mainly from burning fuel, is raisingthe earths temperature and changing the earths climate.Climate change could have impacts on human health, weatherpatterns, and agriculture.

Even though todays new vehicles cause much less air pollutionthan in the past, their greenhouse gas emissions are as highas they were 15 years ago. A vehicles greenhouse gasemissions are directly related to its fuel economy. Every gallonof gasoline that you use in a vehicle adds about 20 pounds ofcarbon dioxide to the atmosphere.

One of the most important things you can do to reduce yourcontribution to global warming is to buy a vehicle with higherfuel economy. Choosing a vehicle that gets 30 rather than 25miles to the gallon will reduce your carbon dioxide emissionsby about a ton each year.

You can figure out about how much carbon dioxide your vehicleemits each year with this simple calculation:

Your vehicles carbon dioxide (tons per year)= (miles you drive each year) divided by (miles per gallon multiplied by 100)

FACTORS AFFECTING MPGNo test can simulate all possible combinations of conditions, climate, driver behavior, and car care habits. Actual mileagedepends on how, when, and where the vehicle is driven. EPAhas found that the mpg obtained by most drivers will be withina few mpg of the estimates in this booklet.

Additional climate change information is available on EPAwebsite: http://www.epa.gov/globalwarming.

ANNUAL FUEL COSTSFuel costs are continually changing and vary considerably byarea. The following chart enables you to estimate annual costsusing fuel prices in your area. These costs are based on 15,000miles of driving per year. The annual fuel cost displayed on thefuel economy label of 1999 cars, light trucks, and vans is basedon 15,000 miles of driving and costs of $1.30 per gallon forpremium unleaded gasoline, or $1.15 per gallon for regularunleaded gasoline, or $1.10 per gallon for diesel fuel, or $.90per gallon for M85 methanol fuel, or $1.50 per gallon for E85ethanol fuel, or $1.20 per gallon for liquefied petroleum gas, or$.75 per gallon equivalent for compressed natural gas. It issuggested that you use the chart to figure your costs by firstcalculating the cost for the estimated highway mpg for yourcar, truck or van, and then the cost for the estimated city mpg.Multiply each value by the percent of your total driving that isdone on the highway and add the two values together to yieldthe total cost. For example, for someone who did 80 percentcity driving and 20 percent highway driving and who wasconsidering purchasing a car, truck or van which was listed asachieving 35 mpg for highway driving and 21 mpg for city driving, the calculation would appear as:

city driving mpg................................$786highway driving mpg.........................$471

Assuming gasoline is $1.10 per gallon, then ($786 x 0.8)+ ($471 x 0.2) = $723, the total cost for fuel

Please be cautioned that simply averaging the mpg for cityand highway driving and then looking up a single value inestimating may result in inaccurate estimates of the annualfuel cost.

NOTE: Because of the constant changes in the price ofgasoline, fuel economy labels may use different values inestimating the annual fuel cost.

Energy Consumption (kW-hr/100 miles)Battery Motor City Hwy Range (miles)

This section of the Guide contains the estimated city and highway fuel economy values, and the range for electric-powered passenger cars and light trucks. For electric vehicles, the city and highway fuel economy numbers areshown in kilowatt-hours per 100 miles, instead of miles per gallon. Thus, a lower number of kilowatt-hours means amore efficient vehicles.

The vehicle range is shown in miles, and represents the maximum distance the vehicle can travel under optimumconditions before the battery should be recharged. The actual energy consumption and range of the vehicle will varydepending on driving conditions, battery condition, and accessory usage, and are particularly affected by outsidetemperature and the use of heating and air conditioning. Fuel costs will vary considerably because of the differencesin electricity costs across the United States.

To determine the fuel cost to drive your electric vehicle 100 miles, multiply the city or highway energy consumed (inkilowatt-hours/100 miles) by the local cost of electricity needed to recharge your vehicles battery (in cents perkilowatt-hour). Annual fuel costs are determined by multiplying the fuel cost to drive your vehicle 100 miles, by thenumber of miles per year which your vehicle will travel, and dividing by 100.

Check with your dealer for availability, as some electric vehicles may be offered for sale or lease only in certain partsof the country.

COMPRESSED NATURAL GAS VEHICLES

This section of the Guide contains the estimated city and highway fuel economy values for passenger cars and lighttrucks designed to be operated on compressed natural gas (CNG). When refueling CNG vehicles, the fuel isnormally dispensed and paid for at the service station in equivalent gallons of CNG, where one equivalent gallonis equal to 121.5 cubic feet of CNG. Therefore, for these vehicles, the city and highway fuel economy values areshown in miles per gallon-equivalent. For dual-fueled vehicles, both the gasoline and the CNG mpg values are listed,if available.

The driving range is also shown in miles. For dual-fueled vehicles, the driving range is shown for both gasoline andCNG. It represents the distance the vehicle can travel on a full tank (or tanks) of fuel during combined city andhighway operation (55 percent city and 45 percent highway operation).

LIQUEFIED PETROLEUM GAS (PROPANE) VEHICLES

This section of the Guide contains the estimated city and highway fuel economy values and the driving range forpassenger cars and light trucks designed to be operated on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) which is commonly knownas propane. For dual-fueled vehicles, both the gasoline and the LPG mpg values and driving ranges are listed, ifavailable. Dual-fueled LPG vehicles typically have two fuel tanks.

ETHANOL FLEXIBLE-FUELED VEHICLES

This section of the Guide contains the estimated city and highway mpg values and the driving range of ethanolflexible-fueled passenger cars and light trucks. These vehicles are called flexible-fueled vehicles because they aredesigned to be operated on gasoline, E85 ethanol (a mixture of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline which isavailable at some service stations in the United States), or any mixture of the two fuels. Flexible-fueled vehiclestypically have only one fuel tank and may be refueled with either gasoline or E85 ethanol fuel.

For these vehicles, the driving range and mpg values are shown for both gasoline and E85 ethanol, if available. When operating on mixtures of gasoline and E85 ethanol, such as when alternating tank fulls of gasoline and E85ethanol, the actual driving range and mpg values will be somewhat between those listed for the two fuels, dependingon the actual percent of gasoline and E85 ethanol contained in the fuel tank.
