Pastor’s Letter February 28, 2021 Dear Parish Family, A few weeks ago I challenged the readers of this weekly letter to think about Lent and whether or not the days from Ash Wednesday to Easter actually added up to 40. Did you figure it out? If you count the days from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday, the day before Easter, you actually come up with 46 days, which is almost a week longer than 40! How can we reconcile this? Catholics and most Episcopal and Protestant denominations solve this by considering Lent to be the days from Ash Wednesday to Holy Thursday, adding in Good Friday and Holy Saturday as special days of fasting but subtracting the six Sundays between Ash Wednesday and Palm Sunday. I remember as a child being told that whatever I gave up for Lent, I could still have on Sunday. Eastern Rite Catholics count all the Sundays but start Lent on the Monday after Ash Wednesday. This still brings them to 42, a discrepancy which they solve by considering the 5th Sunday of Lent and Palm Sunday as not really being a part of Lent—but celebrated as days of fasting on their own. So that gives them 40 days—but no free days from your Lenten fast. Sundays still count. So what is really going on here? Why not just say that Lent is 46 days and be done with it? Because in the minds of the biblical writers, the number 40 has a powerful significance that connects us to the faith and religious experience of those who have gone before us. The list of connections to the number 40 is long but here are the most important connections. ♦ The great flood lasted 40 days and 40 nights, and after that God granted people a new covenant. ♦ Moses fasted for 40 days and nights to prepare himself to receive the Law. ♦ Moses was atop Mount Sinai for 40 days and nights receiving the Law. ♦ The Jewish people wandered in the desert for 40 days awaiting their entrance to the promised land. ♦ We read in the gospel last week that Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness lasted 40 days. ♦ It is a traditional belief that there were 40 hours from the death of Jesus on Good Friday to his

resurrection. ♦ After the resurrection, Jesus appeared to his disciples for 40 days before his Ascension into heaven. Some church feasts have also been derived from the significance of the number 40. ♦ We celebrate the feast of the presentation of Jesus in the temple 40 days after the celebration of his birth. ♦ The keeping of a 40 hours devotion (Eucharistic Adoration) honors the time that Jesus spent in the tomb. Used in this way, the number 40 is a symbol for going the whole distance, fulfilling every obligation, and taking advantage of every opportunity in our relationship to God. Our traveling the distance from Lent to Easter is a way of expressing the completeness of our devotion and preparation to honor the Feast of Easter. I wish you 40 full days of readiness for the new life that Easter brings us.

Counting the Days

Sincerely yours in Christ!

Join our religious education students

in making prayer a part of your Lenten practice.

O God, you call me from my settled ways,

out of old habits and rutted traditions.

You call me into the land of promise,

to new life and new possibilities.

Make me strong to travel the road ahead.

Deliver me from false security and comfort.

May I know that I am not now, and never were, alone.

Let your Word and Spirit dwell in me.

You will show me the path of life;

in your presence there is fullness of joy,

in your hands, happiness forever.

What to Expect

Our Parish Lenten Mission Week 2 :: Tuesday, March 2, Mass Begins at 7 PM

St. Joseph: The Story St. Joseph lived all three levels of life to the fullest: My Story, Our Story, and The Story of God. My Story is our personal world; we learn to relate and connect in Our Story; and The Story reminds us that we are part of something that is much bigger than ourselves. On March 2, Sister Cathy Stare will talk about these three places of grace in the life of St. Joseph and will ask us to look for those same patterns of grace in our own.

Week 3 :: Tuesday, March 9 Msgr. George Ryan

St. Joseph: Protector of the Holy Family and Protector of the Church

Joseph was the protector of the Holy Family. His was an extraordinary vocation and he fulfilled it with courage and fidelity. 150 years ago, Pope Pius IX proclaimed him protector of another family, the family of God, the Catholic Church. He was to become a special intercessor, a support and a guide for the Church in times of trouble. The Church is living some 50 years after the Second Vatican Council. Renewal and change have not been easy. Joseph is the saint we need in 2021.

Gloria (not read during Lent) Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father; God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God; begotten not made, consubstantial with the Father; through Him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation He came down from heaven. By the power of the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered, died, and was buried. On the third day He rose again, in fulfillment of the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, He is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Sunday Readings—Second Sunday of Lent First Reading: Genesis 22: 1-2 , 9a, 10-13, 15-18

God put Abraham to the test. He called to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am!” he replied. Then God said: “Take your son Isaac, your only one, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. There you shall offer him up as a holocaust on a height that I will point out to you.” When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. Then he reached out and took the knife to slaughter his son. But the LORD’s messenger called to him from heaven, “Abraham, Abraham!” “Here I am!” he answered. “Do not lay your hand on the boy,” said the messenger. “Do not do the least thing to him. I know now how devoted you are to God, since you did not withhold from me your own beloved son.” As Abraham looked about, he spied a ram caught by its horns in the thicket. So he went and took the ram and offered it up as a holocaust in place of his son. Again the LORD’s messenger called to Abraham from heaven and said: “I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that because you acted as you did in not withholding from me your beloved son, I will bless you abundantly and make your descendants as countless as the stars of the sky and the sands of the seashore; your descendants shall take possession of the gates of their enemies, and in your descendants all the nations of the earth shall find blessing—all this because you obeyed my command.”

Second Reading: Romans 8:31b-34 Brothers and sisters: If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but handed him over for us all, how will he not also give us everything else along with him? Who will bring a charge against God’s chosen ones? It is God who acquits us, who will condemn? Christ Jesus it is who died—or, rather, was raised— who also is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us.

Gospel: Mark 9:2-10

Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them. Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here! Let us make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified. Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; from the cloud came a voice, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone but Jesus alone with them. As they were coming down from the mountain, he charged them not to relate what they had seen to anyone, except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead. So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what rising from the dead meant.

Reflection On the Gospel

February 28, 2021

Can God say the same to us as God said to Abraham in Sunday’s first reading? How devoted to God are we? Thankfully, God is not asking any of us to sacrifice a child or other loved one, but what are we willing to sacrifice to God? Elsewhere--in Isaiah 58:6-7—we learn what God really wants of us: to release those bound unjustly, to set free the oppressed, to share our bread with the hungry and bring the afflicted and the homeless into our homes, to clothe the naked and not to turn our backs on our own. In this Sunday’s Gospel, God says it even more simply: “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” St. Paul assures us “God is for us,” so “who can be against us?” Now, will we be as devoted to God as God is to us?

Eucharistic Adoration on Fridays from 9 AM to Noon Pope Francis has declared this year to be time of inter-cessory prayer to St. Joseph. Joseph protected Mary as she gave birth to Jesus, he guarded Jesus from Herod’s attempts to destroy him, and he watched over the life and growth of Jesus with fatherly care. Now we ask Joseph to watch over and protect the lives of all, especially our children, born and unborn. Join us each week immediately following the Friday 9 AM Mass.

In Sympathy

Father John J. Denniston We mourn the passing of Father John Denniston on February 22, 2021. Fr. John was one of our weekend assistants during the past two summers. He was an professor of theology at Fordham University and has served in many Long Island parishes, most recently as the pastor of St. Patrick in Huntington. Fr. John will always be remembered for his quick wit, his engaging homilies and infectious laugh. The world will be a less interesting place without him. He will be missed by many and remembered by all. His funeral mass was celebrated on February 27, 2021 at St. Mary’s Manhasset. The presider was Bishop John Barres and Fr. Mike Vetrano was homilist.
