Throughout the week of February 8th, The Color Officers and Student Affairs sold Val-O-Grams (Valentine’s cards and a baggie of candy) in the lobby. Medical Humanities Poster Competition

In every gift card aisle….in every grocery store….in every city across America,

there is a section dedicated to "Get Well Soon" cards. But what if the recipient is suffering from a terminal illness and is not going to get well? What then? They

need an Empathy Card!

The Department of Medical Humanities and Bioethics challenges you to design the perfect Empathy card that not only breaks the “Get Well Soon” mold, but provides genuine support and empathy for our patients with terminal illnesses.

All cards submitted will be turned into posters that will be displayed in the School of Medicine Lobby. The winning posters will be displayed at the upcoming Academy for Professionalism in Health Care in Philadelphia in April 2016.

interview about their tips for starting the day off right.

Announcements FAFSA’s are out! It’s time to fill out your 2016-20 17 FAFSA

• You can locate the FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov and use school code 002518. • April 25th was the start of a new process. If you haven’t filed a FAFSA since then you

will need to go to www.fsaid.ed.gov and create an FSA ID. This will allow you to use a

user name and password for login instead of the four digit pin number you had to use in the past.

Amount: $2,000: The award which will be distributed among three students; there will be one award of $1,000 and two awards of $500. Research Opportunity Award

UMKC Orthopaedics’ Trauma Research Opportunity and Scholar Award - $1,500

This award is given to an outstanding UMKC medical student intent on pursuing a career in orthopedic surgery who demonstrates an interest in fracture care or management of traumatic injuries. The purpose of this award is to recognize the medical student’s achievements, as well as to offer support during a two-month research rotation. The award is designed for medical students in their 4th, 5th, or 6th years or a MD program student in their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th years. A commitment to 2 consecutive medical school elective research months with the department is required. Summer enrollment is preferable, but other open times will be considered. Arnold P. Gold Foundation Opportunities

The Arnold P. Gold Foundation The Arnold P. Gold Foundation is currently offering two opportunities for medical students:

1. Student Summer Fellowship

The Student Summer Fellowship offers opportunities for medical students to complete a domestic or international research or service project related to community health. Medical students at an accredited osteopathic or allopathic medical school in the US or Canada are eligible for a stipend of up to $4,000 for a 10-week project. Applications are due March 18, 2016.

2. The Gold - Hope Tang, MD 2016 Humanism in Medicine Essay Contest

The essay contest is open to current students from accredited osteopathic and allopathic medical schools in the US and Canada. Winning essays receive a cash award and the top three essays are published in Academic Medicine, the journal of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Applications are due March 25, 2016 . This year we ask medical students to reflect on the following quote and write an essay based on the prompt:

Policy for In the Know Announcement Submissions

1) All submissions must be in JPG format (if the announcement is a flyer). PDF and Word documents must be converted to JPG before being emailed to

shahmohammadin@umkc.edu

2) If the announcement is a text only announcement, please include it in the bo dy of your email . Please use black font only and include a title for your announcement

such as “Emergency Medicine Interest Group”.

3) If an announcement includes incorrect information (such as an incorrect date or time), and that week’s In the Know has already been sent out, a revision for your specific announcement will not be sent out to the school . The only time a correction email

will be sent out is if the error is on the part of Student Affairs (mistyped or forgot to include an announcement).

Submissions which do not meet the new requirements will be returned to sender requesting the appropriate edits. The announcement may then be resubmitted to

shahmohammadin@umkc.edu for inclusion in the In the Know.

4) To be included in the following Monday’s “In the Know”, announcements must be submitted by 5PM the prior Thursday.
