Dressed in a vividly-coloured ‘yukata’ (a casual kimono-like dress worn for summer festivals), she showed the students a game called ‘suika-wari’ which is popular in Japan in the summertime. It involves guiding a blindfolded person holding a stick towards a watermelon (suika). The guided person must then try to hit and break open the watermelon (waru). The split watermelon is then shared around and enjoyed by everyone. Using Japanese, the students guided their blindfolded classmates to the watermelonin order to try and hit it. There were varying degrees of success. Rumiko-san also showed some of the students origami, the art of paper-folding. She showed them how to fold a ‘tsuru’ (Japanese bird), which is actually quite complicated, but which most Japanese people are able to do. Rumiko-san, arigatou gozaimashita! Western Australia’s New Intimate Image Laws On the day that our Years 11 and 12 Politics and Law ATAR students visited Parliament House, the State Government passed the new Criminal Law Amendment (Intimate Images) Bill, making it illegal to distribute an intimate image of a person without consent. In the case of someone under 16, the law says they cannot legally consent to an image of themselves being shared. The law aims to strike a balance between protecting young people from this harmful behaviour, and not unduly criminalising them. The new intimate image laws will come into effect following the commencement of the Criminal Law Amendment (Intimate Images) Act 2018 (WA) on 15th April 2019. As young people under the age of 16 are not exempt from this new offence, it is imperative that information regarding these new laws is shared with our students and their parents. The key messages for young people are:

• It is against the law to take, keep, send or ask for an intimate image of a person under the age of 18.

• It is against the law to share an intimate image of a person of any age without their consent.

The Department of Justice has provided all education providers in Western Australia with FAQs which can be found on the website https://department.justice.wa.gov.au/I/intimate-images-law.aspx Legal Aid can provide free legal education sessions and resources for young people between 10 and 18 years old. These sessions can be viewed and booked on the website https://www.legalaid.wa.gov.au/resources/r-u-legal With the increasing use of digital technology and social media, it is important that we continue to ensure that our Colleges and homes are safe places of learning and development for all our students. Child safety requires a consolidated approach from teachers, parents, friends and the community, and I encourage you to discuss these laws and cybersafety issues with your children.

Year 11 Hospitality & Tourism Certificate Crown Complex Tour

On Tuesday, 19th February the Hospitality and Tourism Class attended a Hospitality Tour at the Crown Casino Complex. On arrival at Crown, we were treated to a coffee at the Lobby Lounge, where we could enjoy the atmosphere and settle in for the day. Our tour guide briefed us on all the possible hospitality and tourism careers that are available in the complex. We were fortunate to see various hotel rooms at the Crown Metropol and the Crown Towers. We could see how the little finishing touches provided the customer with a signature hospitality experience at Crown. The highlight was exploring the Crystal Suite in the Towers, where celebrities such as Pink and Ed Sheeran have stayed. There was a strict no photos policy as the $2,500 per night suite is kept confidential. The day concluded with lunch at the Atrium Restaurant ,where students were encouraged to try new foods including oysters and prawns. The class was enthusiastic, well-mannered and a delight to take on the excursion.

"To experience the Crown Complex was a valuable opportunity. It was great to be able to see the hospitality industry and its operations. Seeing all the luxurious hotel rooms and beautifully prepared food at the Atrium was excellent. We were very fortunate to see a hotel of this standard and calibre in real life. Overall we gained a lot of information about hospitality, while having a great time". ~ Aaliyah Johari, Year 11 Hospitality & Tourism Student. Miss Rachel Thomson Home Economics Teacher

Politics & Law Excursion to Parliament House

On Wednesday, 20th February, the Year 11 and 12 ATAR Politics and Law class embarked on what was an incredibly informative and enjoyable excursion to the Constitutional Centre and Parliament House. Firstly, students enjoyed two sessions at the Constitutional Centre, looking at the makeup of the Constitution and therefore of Australian Parliament, and also significant High Court cases since Australia’s federation. After a short lunch break at a local café, the students were greeted by the Attorney General Mr John Quigley MLA at Parliament House. They had a brief conversation with Mr Quigley and then enjoyed a guided tour of Parliament House. Students were able to observe both the Legislative Council and the Legislative Assembly on a Sitting Day and even managed to watch the first five minutes of Question Time – a very loud, but entertaining experience. The excursion was invaluable to the students’ understanding of Australia’s political system and will enrich their understanding of the course. The students were joined on the excursion by Politics & Law teachers, Mrs Mery Jones and Mr Kieran Parkes. Mr Kieran Parkes Politics & Law Teacher

Student Wellbeing – Resources for Parents The Australian Government has provided information about resources to assist parents with the challenge of parenting where risks to students’ safety can appear not only on the street but online. The government has developed the resources to help parents protect children and prepare them to be resilient, responsible and respectful adults. The resources include:

- www.esafety.gov.au – materials that promote online safety including tackling image-based abuse and complaints service for young people who experience serious cyberbullying.

- www.studentwellbeinghub.edu.au – support for students, parents and schools to create a learning environment that promotes student wellbeing and the development of respectful relationships.

- www.bullyingnoway.gov.au – for education and advice on how to combat and respond to bullying.
