“Spirit Awards” were presented to individuals that have made significant contributions to the betterment of the com-munity outside their profession. They were Amelia Smith and Donaly Brice. The recipient of the “2015 AgriBusiness Person of the Year” was Reinhart “Cooper” Homann, pre-sented by 2014 Agribusiness Person of the Year, Doug Spill-man. “2015 Business of the Year” was presented to Pegasus Schools, Inc. by 2014 Business of the Year, Kimberly Zach-ary of Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union. The prestigious “Most Worthy Citizen” award is given to a person who stands out in the community by going above and beyond the call of duty. The 2014 recipients, J.J. and Janet Grigar presented the 2015 “Most Worthy Citizens” award to George and Bonnie Hazelett. The Chamber Staff and Board of Directors would like to congratulate all the award winners and thank them for the hard work, dedication and spirit that they have exhibited throughout the years. 81st Annual Lockhart Chamber of Commerce Banquet

The 81st Annual Chamber Banquet was again at capacity at the Embassy Suites Hotel, Spa & Conference Center in San Mar-cos, Texas on Saturday, January 23rd. This was the sixth year for the Chamber to hold this annual event in San Marcos due to attendance and capacity crowd. The program opened with an invocation and Pledge of Allegiance lead by Kenneth Sneed. During the sit down meal with both steak and grilled salmon, the audience viewed advertising “spots” sponsored by Cham-ber members until the award program started. Angela Rawlinson, the Chamber President, opened the program by welcoming our attendees and introduced elected officials in attendance. Keith Hester took the stage and spoke about a year of growth that took place at the Chamber under the leadership of the 2015 Chair, Hoppy Haden. Mr. Hester then presented Mr. Haden with a plaque for his year of service as Chairman of the Board. Mr. Haden spoke of the accomplishments in 2015 at the Lockhart Chamber of Commerce, and also recognized the efforts and contributions of outgoing Board Director Missie Hagan. The program continued with the introduction of the 2016 Chair, Keith Hester, who outlined his goals for the coming year. He then introduced the 2016 Board of Directors: Re-becca Pulliam, Chair-elect; Hoppy Haden, Past Chair; Abel De La Cruz, Vice Chair, Media & Public Relations; Tommy Bar-ron, Vice Chair, Business & Economic Development; Martin Ritchey, Vice Chair, Community Development; Donald Schneider, Vice Chair, Membership Development; Clint Rob-erts, Director; Ken Doran, Director; Clint Mohle, Director; Bobby Herzog, Director; Angela Meitler, Director; and Anice LeBeouf, DC, Director. Mr. Hester also talked about the new “Annual Sponsorship Packages” being offered by the chamber, which includes sponsorships for the 44th Annual Chisholm Trail Roundup, Rodeo & Music festival – Lockhart’s largest tourism event.

The Consideration of Elementary Attendance Zones

Lockhart ISD is growing, and the District will open its 5th elementary campus (Alma Brewer Strawn Elementary) in the fall of 2016. The Dis-trict must determine which students will attend the campus, which is the only District campus that will be located outside of the central part of the

District and outside the City of Lockhart. In addition, a review of this open enrollment system reveals that the transportation experience of

District students is not optimal. The problems identified with the trans-portation of students are:

Students’ bus rides are long, and it is estimated that the requirement that our buses stop at 8 campuses each morning to drop off students and 8 campuses each afternoon to pick up students adds an estimated 1.5-2 hours per day to each route Elementary students riding the same bus as secondary students is not an optimal way to group students Students must wait a substantial amount of time before school starts

after being dropped at campus by the bus and after school before the bus arrives to pick up the students.

In addition to the need to assign students to attend Strawn Elementary, the District believes that we can make improvements in the Lockhart

ISD student experience by making changes to how we assign students to attend elementary schools in the District. It is our expectation that atten-dance zoning will reduce the length of bus rides and before- and after-school wait times for students. In addition, the change should make the

District's transportation system more effective and efficient.

The deadline for newsletter inserts is the 25th of each month and is only $40. We will need 400 copies on 8.5 x 11 paper. For more information about monthly inserts, call us at 512-398-2818.

STATEMENT FROM THE CHAIRMAN: Hello Chamber Members, The award recipients at the banquet were all well deserving, but one made a big impression on me. I do not know George & Bonnie Hazelett personally, but when I heard the way JJ & Janet spoke of the Hazlett’s and their contributions to Lockhart, I was overwhelmed with inspiration. I only hope I can begin to serve this community the way they have. The Hazelett’s, like many others, personally inspire to me to approach my position with the dedication it deserves. Onward into 2016…. Our next major undertaking will be securing sponsorships for CTR. This will be the biggest factor that determines our suc-cess this year. I am optimistic that the new “Annual Sponsor-ship Packages” are the future of our Chamber’s success; these new packages were designed in the best interest of the sponsor. The goal is not to get more out of you, but to give you MORE for what you already spend, a lot more! It also comes with the convenience of a one-time commitment for the year and the ability to pay in 3 installments, or all at once. If your business spends $2,000 or more on an annual basis, this program will absolutely benefit you in a major way.
