    Well done to our KS3 Badminton Town Champions, whorepresented the town with disncon at the county round of the

    Naonal Schools Badminton Tournament. They nished a

    respectable third place against some tough compeon .  

    John Bell Lecture This year we host the Thirty-h Annual John Bell Lecture. This

    Lecture is now an established tradion of the school and is given

    as a tribute to the school’s rst Headteacher, the late CanonJohn Bell. The lecture this year is being delivered by local

    businessman and former student Daniel Robinson.

    Tickets are free and are available from the School Oce. 

    Message from the Chair of Governors Following Mr. Lee's decision to rere as Headteacher at the end of the summer term, the Governors of the school have

    appointed Mr. Stephen Hammond to be Headteacher from 1st. September 2015. Mr. Hammond, a resident of Hartlepool, is

    currently Headteacher of St. Aidan's Catholic Academy in Sunderland. The Governors wish him every success in his new post

    and look forward to working with him to ensure the connuing progress of the school.

    Congratulaons to our three students who performed

    brilliantly against other Catholic schools in the Catenian

    Public Speaking Compeon. Lois Joynt was runner up inthe Junior secon, Eve Coates was third in the Intermediates

    and Connie Sullivan was runner up in the Seniors. Connie now

    goes on to represent the north east in the naonal nal whichwill be held in Manchester in September.

    The English Martyrs Associaon The next EMA meeng will be held on 

    Monday 2nd March 2015.

    All parents / friends of the school are most welcome to

    aend. All support is greatly appreciated. 

    Going the extra mile for charity 

    A member of our sta is running this year’s London

    Marathon to raise money for CLIC Sargent which is the House

    charity of Blessed John Ingram. In 2011, Steve Hope’s young

    cousin Becky Bell was diagnosed with cancer. Aged only 7

    the cancer was too strong for her and she lost her ght in

    January 2012. That same year he decided to take up running

    and aimed to complete the Great North Run in her memory.

    CLIC Sargent is a charity dedicated to supporng children

    with cancer. They looked aer Becky and her family right through her treatment,

    helping them to understand what was happening and what to expect. Aer a couple

    more GNR’s and raising a lot of money for CLIC he has decided to jump up to the next level and take on a Marathon. His

    target is to raise over £2,000 for this race. CLIC Sargent is an outstanding service that needs funding to help other children

    like Becky so if you can, please donate to this unbelievable cause. Thank You.

    The English Martyrs School and Sixth Form College is hosng a Micro Beer and Wine Fesval onFriday 20

    thFebruary, 7.00 pm - 11.30pm. Aer last year’s success this will be the second me the

    school has hosted such an event. The event takes place to raise money to take a group of students to

    the Scosh Isles of Mull and Iona for a week o f outdoor acvies and spiritual reecon.

    Tickets are £7 and include a fesval glass, programme and entertainment.

    Ampleforth Lent Retreat A fantasc chance to step back from the craziness of everyday life; this year’s theme is

    Superheroes! Open to all at the cost of only £45. March 27th

    Chaplaincy Trips and Opportunies Students have been oered places on a number of

    trips recently and there are sll a few spaces on most. 

    The Source is a monthly youth event held in

    Newcastle on the rst Wednesday of every month. It’s

    open to all students Year 9+, no cost involved but students MUST sign up in the Chapel. Flame – A trip to Wembley Arena on

    Saturday March 7th

     where we will meet 10,000 other young Catholics for the largest Catholic Youth event in the UK. Open to

    all Year 10+, a fantasc day cosng only £30. YMT Summer Fesval - Forms for this three day fesval experience

    (aka God Camp) held at The Youth Village will go out shortly; there is already a sign-up sheet in the Chapel. If students

    would like any more informaon they should see Naomi in the Chapel. 

    Would parents please avoid dropping their children o in any of the sta car parks at any me during the

    school day.  It is in the best interests of all students’ safety if the number of vehicles entering the site is kept

    to a minimum.

    Medicines / Tablets Please remember that students must not carry any tablets / medicines in school. If students need tobring tablets to school they should hand them in to Mr Craddy for safekeeping. Thank you 

    FREE SCHOOL MEALS Children whose parents are in receipt of one of the following are entled to receive free school meals (FSM):

    Naonal Insurance number before they car ry out a simple test v ia their Eligibility Checking Service.  

    Remember * School can provide packed lunches or a hot meal as part of the Free School Meals service 

    * In the 2014 / 2015 nancial year schools will receive £935 per secondary pupil who ha s ever been eligible for free school

    meals. This could help your child in a wide range of ways.  

    Online e-payments for school meals and other school purchases You may be aware the school is introducing online payment to help reduce administraon and cash handling in school and

    also to allow pupils to reduce the amount of cash they carry to school. For school meals, each pupil has an account. If they

    are to purchase from the cafeteria you will be required to top up this account with money. There are now three ways to pay

    money into this account:

    Cheques made payable to Hartlepool Borough Council. Please put pupil name and year group on reverse of cheque. 

    Cash payments using the revaluaon unit(s) located in the school

    Student Safety 

    Please ensure that you remind your children that they must only cross Catcote Road via the pedestrian

    crossings. We have had a number of reports of students running across the road in front of cars. This is

    very dangerous and could lead to an accident.

    Year 9 Opons Evening This will take place on Thursday 26th February at

    6.00 pm. This will give you the opportunity to

    speak with subject teachers and senior sta about

    the range of subjects on oer. It will also give you

    valuable informaon about the Opons process. 

    Students need to come in school uniform. 

    Please make sure you arrive early to allow me

    for parking your car. 

    University Applicaons and Finance 

    Year 13 students can apply online now for student nance if you

    are starng a full-me course at university in academic year 2015

    to 2016.

    You can apply for a Tuion Fee Loan to help pay your fees, and loans and grants to help with your living costs. 

    You do not need a conrmed place at university or college to apply. Just use your preferred choice and if it changes you can

    update your applicaon later. To apply for a mean tested bursary parents will need to supply nancial informaon. 

    You must apply before 31 May to get your funding by the start of term in autumn 2015. If your applicaon is late, your

    money might be too. 

    Further details about entlement can be found online at www.gov.uk/studeninancesteps. 

    If your son / daughter has applied to university and met the UCAS deadline of 15 January 2015

    then they should receive decisions from all of their choices by 31 March 2015. They then have

    unl 6 May 2015 to decide which is their rst (FIRM) choice university and which is their second (INSURANCE) choice. The

    rm choice should be the place where your son / daughter wants to go. The insurance choice should be somewhere withlower oer condions but somewhere they would be happy to study if they did not meet the condions of their rm oer. It

    is important to remember that you only aend your insurance choice course if you do not meet the condions of your rm

    choice, but you do meet the condions of your insurance. Students cannot choose between their rm and insurance when

    they get their results. Students have been advised to speak to a member of the sixth form team before replying to their

    oers.

    Pre Apprenceship Workshops – Thursday 19th

     February On Thursday 19

    th February 32 aspiring apprences took part in Apprenceship Workshops where the

    y networked with

    employers and worked with them to develop their employability skills to prepare them for compeve recruitment

    processes. The day was hosted by HCFE. An employer’s market was incorporated into the day so that the students had an

    opportunity to speak to individual employers about their specic apprenceship opportunies on oer and their applicaon

    processes. 

    Year 10 Nuclear STEM Event - Wednesday the 11th

     and Thursday 12th

     February 2015 Twenty Y10 students took part in a two day event which focused upon the nuclear industry. It was a

     jammed packed two days where students worked in teams with some of the most presgious

    employers in our area to learn about their industry in detail, the careers pathways and the dierent

    opportunies available in this sector. The students worked to develop the employability skills

    required to succeed in compeve recruitment processes. Students also had the

    opportunity to look at the Naonal Apprenceship Website and on day two

    visited Hartlepool Power Staon and had a tour of the site. 

    Year 10 Catering Exam This took place on the morning of Tuesday 27

    th 

    January. Twenty students all prepared and presented

    four dishes suitable for an aernoon tea. Previous

    lessons focused on the independent research of

    aernoon tea menus, trialling recipes and creang

    suitable dishes for the students’ menus. Students

    worked with enthusiasm, determinaon and

    movaon throughout the morning to produce

    challenging dishes with high skill levels. These

    included chocolate éclairs, sausage rolls made with

    homemade aky pastry, fruit tartlets with crèmepasserie, macaroons, millionaires shortbread and

    meringue cupcakes to name but a few. This forms the

    praccal element of their coursework which will now

    be evaluated and presented as a porolio for

    assessment as part of their GCSE Catering course.

    Year 12 Business & Enterprise Students are currently well underway with compleng the

    nishing touches to their Valennes ‘In a Jar’ products. The

    Y12 students have been working so hard, ordering stock,

    assembling the products and working on the promoon of

    their product. They competed against other Young Enterprise

    groups across the region on Sunday 8th

     February at The Metro

    Centre in Gateshead, where they will sold their goods and

    competed for ‘Best Trade Stand’. Students have already had

    the opportunity to sell some of their jars at Asda, Hartlepool.

    Students are also taking orders

    from sta and parents so if you

    do have that special someone in

    your life and you have not yet

    got them a gi please speak to

    one of the Young Enterprise

    team members who would be

    happy to provide you with more

    informaon.

    St Anne Line House Mass St Anne Line House

    celebrated Mass with

    Father Adrian and the

    theme ‘Courage.’ 

    Each year group chose a

    superhero and linked them

    to their own real life heroes. 

    Local parishioners came into

    school to join the students

    in their celebraon.

    Students from the House

    performed to an excellent

    standard of music and

    singing. Many students also

    contributed to the readings

    and prayers.

    It was a great celebraon.

    Dance Workshop

    organised by our Year

    13 Performing Arts

    students. 

    All the Sacred Heart

    students loved the day

    and didn’t want to

    leave!

    Congratulaons to the U14 school Netball team who qualied at the weekend to compete in the schools naonal nals tobe held at Ellesmere Port in March. 

    They played some outstanding netball at Sports Central in Newcastle, compeng against the North East region’s top teams

    enabling them to gain a spot to contest against the top school teams in the country. In every game they played, they

    demonstrated enthusiasm, commitment and a ghng spirit to reach the nals. 

    Well done girls and good luck!!!! 

    Wonder and Awe Art Exhibion In January we realised our goal and vision of

    presenng a sculptural piece of artwork for our

    annual Catholic Partnership art exhibion at

    the Galilee Chapel, Durham Cathedral. The

    opening was a fantasc evening with an

    excellent turnout by parents, students and

    sta of the respecve schools. 

    It was excing to see all the hard work and

    eort of our students, teachers, and wider

    community come together to produce our

    emove sculptural poppy that commemorated

    the 100 year anniversary of the First World

    War.

    The weather conspired against us once again

    and we had to accept our freezing ngers and

    toes but it was more than worth it when we

    saw the nished outcome. 

    I have included some images of the seng and

    nal exhibion for you to see the wonderful

    work that all of our partnership schools and

    our own wonderful students produced. 

    The exhibion will close soon (Friday 13th

     

    February) so if you can, please try and

    get to see it. It is free to enter and well

    worth the visit. 

    Year 11 Art Exams Please take this last opportunity to

    try your best and work with

    diligence in producing your nal

    work for your coursework and your

    exam. We have 11 weeks le to

    complete all expected work and the

    actual GCSE exams begin in 4 week’s

    me. You have worked since the

    beginning of Year 10 and now it is

    your me to push for the best grade

    possible. We are very proud of you

    for what you have achieved so far

    and are here to help you in the next

    Cross Country Following massive success in the Town Event held in November, a number of

    students went on to represent Hartlepool in the Cleveland County round at

    Stewarts Park, Middlesbrough on 19th

     January. The students represented

    themselves, the school and the town with great disncon. 

    Individual success came to Sam Tyers who nished in 14th

     place and

    Niamh McMorris who nished 15th

    . Both of these students earned a place to

    represent Cleveland in the next County round. James Dunn and Grace Lambert

    nished 1 place outside of qualicaon for the County team. 

    Year 7 & 8 boys and girls teams qualied to the Tees Valley round of the

    Sportshall Athlecscompeon.

    An amazing achievement for

    the school to not only be

    represenng Hartlepool in all 4

    Trampoline Success It has been a busy 2 months for EMS trampolinists with 3 main compeons taking place.

    Hartlepool Schools Compeon 22 students successfully took part in the compeon held at EMS with many students compeng for the very rst me. The

    whole team completed their rounes to a high level and produced some excellent results. Highlights include KS4 Team

    Champions, KS3 Team Runners Up, Olivia Bennison: KS4 1st

     place, Lewis Rogers: KS3 1st place, Elizabeth Cooper: KS4 Elite

    2nd

     Place, Erin Dobing: KS4 2nd Place, Aimee Thompson: KS4 3rd

     Place and Alice Mowbray: KS3 4th

     Place. Congratulaons to

    all who took part.

    Tees Valley Compeon 7 students qualied to represent Hartlepool at the Tees Valley

    Championship on the 29th

     January. All students performed superbly

    on the day and came home with a variety of medals including KS4

    Novice Girls Champions. Olivia Bennison was crowned KS4 Novice 

    Individual Champion with Erin Dobing taking 2nd

     place and Olivia

    Atkinson in 3rd

    . Lewis Rogders had a superb warm up for Northern

    Ireland becoming KS3 Elite Champion and lastly Elizabeth Cooperfought o some extremely tough compeon to gain 2

    nd place in the

    KS4 Elite Girls. Congratulaons to you all.

    BSGA Zonal School Compeon Northern Ireland 

    Aer qualifying for the Zonal Finals of a Naonal Compeon back in

    November Lewis Rodgers travelled to Northern Ireland on the 31st 

    January to compete in the KS3 Intermediate Boys secon. The

    compeon as expected was extremely tough but Lewis put himself in

    a fantasc posion aer a strong rst set roune and followed it up

    with a complex voluntary roune to be placed 3rd

     overall. This is an

    outstanding achievement and Lewis now becomes the rst student

    from the school to have ever qualied for the Naonal Finals which

    will be held in Birmingham in March.
