The Vicar Writes……February 2014

ear Friends

Firstly,  can  I  thank  you  all  for  your  good  wishes  on  my  50th  birthday  and    Roy,    Val  and  Eileen  for  the  surprises  on  the  Sunday.  Over  the  past  month  I  have  come  to  appreciate,  even  more,  the  value  of  friends  and  family  and  making  time  to  get  together.  I  have  enjoyed  chatting  and  laughing  with  them.  I  got  to  thinking  a  good  belly  laugh  really  makes  you  feel  better  and  I  remembered  reading  that  laughter  was  good  for  you.  Dr.  Michael  Miller  of  the  University  of  Maryland  School  of  Medicine  writes,  ”While  laughter  should  not  replace  exercise,  we  do  recommend  that  you  try  to  laugh  on  a  regular  basis.  Thirty  minutes  of  exercise  three  times  a  week,  and  15  minutes  of  laughter  on  a  daily  basis  is  probably  good  for  the  vascular  system."    His  recommendation  was  based  on  research  in  which  volunteers  were  shown  a  funny  film  and  a  grim  one.  Average  blood  flow  increased  22  %  during  laughter.

Through  Comic  Relief,  laughter  has  also  helped  to  raise  money  for  projects  at  home  and  overseas  which  benefit  people  in  need.  So,  here  too,  laughter  is  helping  sustain  the  flow  of  life  blood  to  those  who  struggle  to  maintain  the  basic  necessities  of  life.

Laughter  comes  in  many  shapes  and  sizes.  It  can  be  mocking  or  affectionate,  uproarious  or  secretive;  it  can  come  in  response  to  fear  or  embarrassment  as  well  as  to  wit  or  slap-‐stick.  People,  whose  struggles  seem  to  be  almost  overwhelming,  often  find  strength  to  share  a  good  laugh;  those  who  look  as  if  they  have  it  made  can  sometimes  appear  to  be  rather  humourless.

Jesus  delighted  in  parties  and  fun.  These  were  not  extras.  They  were  not  distractions  from  what  life  was  really  all  about.  The  number  of  times  we  know  he  attended  meals  or  celebrations  of  one  sort  or

another,  and  the  frequency  with  which  he  used  stories  about  them  in  his  teaching,  make  them  central  to  his  life,  part  of  his  life  blood.

So  let’s  delight  in  humour,  in  the  people  who  make  us  laugh  and  in  times  of  fun  with  family  and  friends.  They  are  gifts  to  be  grateful  for  and  to  build  into  the  regular  pattern  of  our  lives.

Yours  in  Christ

Our Vision: A family, rooted in Christ, committed to transforming lives by:Gathering as God’s people – Growing more like Jesus – Going out in the power of the Spirit.

Farmhouse Breakfast Week 2014Sunday  26th  January  to  Saturday  1st  FebruaryThe  Parish  of  Killay  joined  in  the  annual  celebration  championing  the  importance  of  breakfast  which  aims  to  get  the  nation  to  Shake  Up  Their  Wake  Up!47%  of  people  regularly  skip  breakfast  during  the  week  so  the  aim  is  to  encourage  people  to  enjoy  a  healthy  breakfast  more  regularly.Father  Tim  urged  people  to  think  where  their  food  came  from  and  encouraged  us,  when  possible,  to  shop  locally.  He  thanked  local  suppliers  Phil  Chaplin  for  their  ‘Happy’  eggs  and  Prime  Cut  Butchers  for  their  low  fat  sausages  and  bacon. Many  thanks  to  all  who  helped  in  the  kitchen  and  presided  over  the  tables.  The  service  was  excellent  and  food  cooked  to  perfection.

Parish NewsWe  pray  for  all  who  are  ill  at  this  time  or  in  Nursing  Homes  –  particularly  remembering  those  being  cared  for  at  home  and  those  who  are  caring  for  them:    Phyllis  Harries,  Emlyn  Bawden,  Peter  Dickman,  Joan  Davies,  Beattie  Loosemore,  Joyce  Leonard,  Olwen  &  John  Iles,  Joan  Dobbs  and  Graham  Treharne.    Barbara  Jones  is  in  Singleton  Hospital  but  hopes  to  be  home  soon.

We  send  our  love  and  sympathy  to  Denise  Rogers  on  the  death  of  her  dear  daughter,  Sue.    Sue  had  been  ill  for  some  time  and  we  pray  for  her  brother,  Geoffrey,  her  family  and  Denise.

We  were  sad  to  learn  of  the  death  of  Bettina  Jones  (Betti)  and  we  send  our  sympathy  to  Shan,  Kathryn,  Llewela  and  families.    Betti  had  lived  in  Dunvant  all  her  life  and  had  great  knowledge  of  the  history  of  the  area  and,  in  particular,  St  Martin’s  Church  (she  had  worked  there  when  it  was  a  shop).    She  was  always  delightful  to  listen  to.

Sympathy  is  extended  to  the  nephews  and  nieces  of  Verona  Thomas  on  her  death  at  the  Old  Vicarage  Nursing  Home.    Verona  was  born  in  Ystalyfera;  she  had  2  sisters  and  5  brothers.    Her  father  named  her  because  Ystalyfera  was  surrounded  by  mountains  and  he  had  read  that,  so  she  was  Verona.    She  loved  her  family  dearly;  she  was  faithful  to  her  friends  and  to  her  neighbours  and,  above  all,  for  over  40  years  she  was  a  devoted  member  of  St  Hilary’s  Church  and  the  Mothers’  Union.Verona  graduated  in  Biology  at  Aberystwyth  University;  taught  in  Ystalyfera  Grammar  School;  Cefn  School,  Merthyr;  Maesydderwen,  Ystragynlais  and  Glanmor  Girls  School,  Swansea.    She  retired  in  1981.    She  took  up  art  and  she  displayed  some  paintings  on  the  walls  of  her  home. She  will  be  sadly  missed  by  everyone  who  had  touched  her.    Her  family  (she  took  on  the  role  of  Matriarch  -‐  she  was  the  glue  that  kept  everyone  together),  her  pupils,  her  colleagues,  her  friends. The  family  of  Verona  wish  to  express  their  sincere  thanks  to  Phyllis  &  Mike  Smith  and  to  Pat  Stratton  for  their  loyalty,  particularly  during  her  stay  in  hospital  and  at  the  Nursing  Home.    Thanks  are  also  extended  to  Eileen  Nielsen  for  her  regular  visits  with  the  Sacrament  to  Verona  for  over  2  years.    God  bless  you  all.

Church  was,  again,  saddened  by  the  death  of  Bob  Massey-‐Shaw.    We  send  our  sympathy  to  his  children,  Jeremy,  Felicity,  Nick  and  Alison  and  grand  children,  Alex  and  Bethan.Parish of Killay February 20149

Bob  was  born  in  1923  in  India  -‐  his  father  was  manager  of  Assam  Tea  Plantation.    The  family  returned  to  Britain  and  Bob  attended  the  Grammar  School  in  Gainsborough.    He  joined  the  RAF  and  went  to  the  Bombing  and  Gunnery  School  in  Toronto,  Canada.    On  his  return  to  UK,  he  joined  207  Squadron  Bomber  Command  in  Spilsby,  Lincs.  Returning  from  a  bombing  raid  on  Geissen,  he  was  shot  down  and  was  captured  by  the  German  Home  Guard.    He  was  released  in  1945.    His  first  job  after  the  war  was  with  Nyasaland  Tea  Plantation.    Here  he  married  his  first  wife  Betty  and  had  one  son,  Jeremy.    When  Nyasaland  became  independent  as  Malawi  in  1964,  they  returned  to  UK.    He  was  then  involved  in  building  Singleton  Hospital.1972  saw  Bob  becoming  a  County  Councillor  and,  in  1996,  he  became  the  Leader  of  the  Opposition.    Sadly,  Betty  died  in  1977.In  1980,  Bob  married  Muriel  at  St  Hilary’s  Church;  she  was  his  neighbour  in  Heaseland  Place  and  he  was  a  wonderful  father  to  her  3  children,  Felicity,  Nick  and  Alison.    He  qualified  for  a  BA  in  Humanities  in  2003.    We  could  go  on  and  on.    Before  her  death,  Muriel  &  Bob  were  always  to  be  found  in  St  Hilary’s  Church  -‐  they  were  both  faithful  members  to  the  end.    We  all  miss  Bob  and  his  funeral  was  testimony  to  his  popularity.

May  they  all  rest  in  peace  and  rise  again  in  glory.

To  any  member  of  our  church  family  who  is  not  feeling  well  or  is

distressed  at  this  time,  please  contact  Father  Tim.  There  are  a  small  number  of  trained  pastoral  care  visitors  in  our

Parish  who  will  always  try  to  accommodate  a  request.

Thanks  to  Jeremy  for  organising  the  Parish  Dinner  in  January.    We  had  a  lovely  meal  at  Tapestri  with  dancing  and  a  raffle. The  fruit  bowl  was  won  by  Mary  Williams  this  year.

JEREMY AND SARAH  would like to thank their many friends in St. Hilary’s Church for their Best Wishes, Cards, and Gifts, received on the occasion of their Engagement.

Music Societye  There  were  22  members  present  at  the  AGM  of  the  Music  Society,  held  on  the  14th  January  at  the  Parish  Centre. The  Chairperson  gave  the  report  on  2013’s  very  successful  meetings;  the  Treasurer’s  report  showed  that  we  need  to  watch  our  finances.Once  again,  Eric  Thomas  has  put  together  a  very  impressive  programme  for  2014.    The  Committee  remains  unchanged  -‐  Eric  Thomas  Secretary/Treasurer,  Haulwen  Chairperson,  Jane  Riseborough  Vice  Chair  and  the  rest  of  the  Committee,  Barbara  Thomas,  Pat  Stratton,  Barbara  Roberts  &  Julie  Cole,  will  continue  with  the  Tea  Rota. We  decided  that  our  subs  would  remain  at  £5  per  annum  but,  to  boost  our  funds,  we  would  hold  a  monthly  raffle  which  will  be  organised  by  Barbara  Roberts.

Business  over,  our  guests  were  Dr  Jim  Proudfoot  assisted  by  his  wife,  Jan,  talking  and  playing  discs  on  Scottish  Dance  Music.    Jim  explained  about  the  music  for  the  different  dances  and  also  where  the  different  instruments  were  needed. He  introduced  us  to  different  bands  and  artists  and  quite  a  lot  of  toe  tapping  was  going  on.    I  am  sure  that  quite  a  few  of  us  who  enjoy  watching  Scottish  dancing  would  take  the  music  for  granted  but  now,  will  think  differently  especially  when  each  piece  of  music  has  such  lovely  quaint  names  like  “Far  O’er  the  Sea”,  “Gaelforce  Wind”,  “Miss  Hamilton  of  Pencaitland”  and  “Clementina  Loughnan”.Thank  you  to  Jim  &  Jan  for  a  very  interesting  evening. Our  next  meeting  is  February  10th  when  David  Morgan  returns  to  give  a  presentation  on  “Concertos”

Ladies GuildOn the first meeting of 2014 we were delighted to welcome one of our favourite speakers, David Morgan.Dave began with a story about a question, posed to children at Dunvant School before Christmas, to name “the seven wonders of Swansea”. The answers were more or less predictable, in seventh place was the view looking over Three Cliffs bay, 6th Oxwich bay, 5th Langland bay, 4th Mumbles and the lighthouse, 3rd the top of the Tower, 2nd Swansea market and, unsurprisingly, number one “Joe's Ice Cream” On the Tuesday before the Christmas holiday, the children were taken by coach to all their chosen places, to have lunch at The Oxwich Bay hotel, ending up at Joe's Ice Cream Parlour. We were then asked to imagine that we were taking a walk along the old roads of Gower, with Dave as our guide; from Upper Killay village which is over a hundred years older than Killay, we went on towards the Gower Inn which, at one time, was a poor-house for men. We went through Ilston Valley, with our guide telling us the history of the woods and ancient chapels and the preachers who once lived there. He said that Penrice was once the capital of Gower and that in the churchyard there is one of only three graves in Britain with the word “murdered” on the headstone. As usual it was a fascinating talk delivered with enthusiasm and humour. Our sincere thanks to David.

On January 15th, Mr Alan Oliver came along to tell us about Lalique Glass which he began collecting while he was in Paris for his Silver Wedding anniversary.Rene Lalique entered an art college in Paris at the age of twelve, became an apprentice at 16 and, aged 18, moved to London and attended Sydenham Art college. He returned to Paris and worked freelance designing jewellery, painting and then designing glass. He exhibited at an international exhibition in Turin in 1911 and opened his first factory, to produce his glass designs, in 1914 in Paris. This factory still exists but items are now mass produced. Following the Art Deco Exposition of 1925 he began producing mascots for motor manufacturers Bugatti, Bentley, Citroen and Rolls Royce.Alan showed slides of many beautiful pieces of Lalique; bowls, perfume bottles, vases and many other items in various colours, some moulded, others etched but all made by experts. Lalique glass is much sought after and pieces have been sold at auction for as much as £200,000. A very interesting and informative talk.

The following week, two members of Dunvant Horticultral Society, Geoff Phillips and Bernard Daniels, came to answer members' gardening questions.Nearly everyone seemed to have a question or problem to put to the experts. Hanging baskets, shrub pruning, lawn care,

viruses attacking Impatiens and many other problems were discussed and answers given. Geoff and Bernard shared their vast knowledge, giving advice on the best composts and plant foods, and methods of lining and watering hanging baskets . It was a very useful and interesting evening as a result of which, Guild members will have spectacular garden displays next summer !!

Mothers’ UnionOur  meetings  for  2014  began  on  January  21st  with  Father  Tim  chairing  our  AGM  after  communion  in  church.    During  the  service,  Father  Tim  told  us  about  St  Agnes,  a  4th  Century  Christian  martyr  and  Patron  Saint  of  Virgins.    She  was  born  in  Rome  and  killed  there  in  her  13th  year  because  she  refused  to  consider  marriage. The  AGM  was  held  in  the  Parish  Centre,  officers  were  re-‐elected,  two  new  committee  members  were  elected  to  replace  those  who  had  completed  their  term  of  office.    We  are  a  large  thriving  branch  and,  during  last  year,  four  new  members  were  enrolled.    We  are  always  happy  to  welcome  new  members;  have  a  look  at  our  programme  on  our  Notice  Board  in  the  Parish  Centre. All  are  welcome  to  any  of  our  meetings.Mothers’  Union  is  quite  a  force  worldwide.  Our  theme  for  2014  is  “Sowing  the  Future  Together”.Our  next  meeting  will  be  on  Tuesday,  February  4th  at  2:00  pm.    Mrs  Grace  Birt  will  talk  about  the  Lindisfarne  Gospels. The  Mothers’  Union  eucharist  in  St  Mary’s  is  on  February  7th  at  11:00  am.

Your  children  are  not  your  children. They  are  sons  and  daughters  of  Life’s  longing  for  itself. They  come  through  you  but  not  from  you,And,  though  they  are  with  you  yet,  they  belong  not  to  you. You  may  give  them  your  love  but  not  your  thoughtsFor  they  have  their  own  thoughtsYou  may  house  their  bodies  but  not  their  soulsFor  their  souls  dwell  in  the  house  of  tomorrow,  which  you  cannot  visit,  not  even  in  your  dreams. You  may  strive  to  be  like  them,  but  not  seek  not  to  make  them  like  youFor  life  goes  not  backward  nor  tarries  with  yesterday. You  are  the  bows  from  which  your  children,  as  living  arrows,  are  sent  forth. The  archer  sees  the  mark  upon  the  path  of  the  infinite,  and  He  bends  you  with  His  might  that  His  arrows  may  go  swift  and  far.Let  your  bending  in  the  Archer’s  hand  be  for  gladnessFor,  even  as  He  loves  the  arrow  that  flies,  so  He  loves  also  the  bow  that  is  stable.

‘THE TEST OF PROGRESS IS NOT WHETHER WE ADD MORE TO THE ABUNDANCE OF THOSE WHO HAVE TOO MUCH; IT IS WHETHER

WE PROVIDE ENOUGH FOR THOSE WHO HAVE TOO LITTLE.’

A  couple  of  weeks  ago,  I  drew  my  wife’s  attention  to  a  photograph  in  the  Daily  Mail  which  showed  a  wintry  scene  of  Chicago  with  the  frozen  Lake  Michigan  in  the  background.    This  prompted  Barbara  to  look  up  the  photographs  we  took  (some  3  rolls  of  film)  during  a  holiday  we  had  spent  in  the  USA  when  we  meandered  for  22  days,  by  coach,  from  New  York  to  Los  Angeles  following,  very  closely,  ‘Route  66’.While  flicking  through  the  photographs,  I  spent  some  time  looking  at  a  series  of  6  or  so  snaps  taken  at  Arlington  National  Cemetery  in  Washington.    These  were  memorials  to  John  F  Kennedy;  a  simple  cross  in  memory  of  his  brother,  Robert;  an  extensive  memorial  listing  all  the  fallen  in  the  Vietnam  War  and  a  Korean  War  Memorial,  amongst  many  others.    However,  the  memorial  which  impressed  us  most  was  the  one  dedicated  to  the  former  President  Franklin  D  Roosevelt.    He  was  the  only  President  ever  to  be  re-‐elected  3  times,  between  1933  and  1945  viz.1936,  1940  &  1944.    His  career  was  interrupted  in  1921  when  he  was  crippled  by  polio  but  he  went  on  to  become  Governor  of  New  York  from  1928  -‐  32.As  President,  he  fulfilled  his  promise  of  a  ‘new  deal’  for  the  American  people  by  initiating  relief  programmes,  measures  to  aid  unemployment,  and  assist  industrial  recovery  from  the  Depression.Several  quotations  from  his  speeches  have  been  included  on  the  walls  of  his  memorial  but  the  one  which,  to  me,  sums  up  the  over-‐riding  nature  of  his  political  and  social  awareness,  is  printed  as  the  headline  to  this  summation.    Would  it  be  asking  too  much  that  leaders  and  statesmen  across  the  world  might  embrace,  and  put  into  practice,  the  philosophy  enshrined  therein  and  adopt  that  attitude  in  their  decision  making.

Stranger than FictionAt  an  annual  awards  dinner  given  for  Forensic  Science,  the  President,  Dr  Don  Harper   Mills   astounded   his   audience   with   the   legal   complications   of   a  bizarre  death.    Here  is  the  story:On  March  23rd,  1994,  the  medical  examiner  viewed  the  body  of  Ronald  Opus  and  concluded  that  he  had  died   from  a   shotgun  wound  to   the  head.    Mr.  Opus  had  jumped  from  the   top  of  a   ten-‐storey  building   intending  to   commit  suicide.    He  left  a  note  to  that  effect,  indicating  his  despondency.    As  he  fell  past  the  9th  floor,  his   life  was   interrupted   by   a   shotgun   blast   passing   through   a   window,  which  killed  him  instantly.Neither  the  shooter  nor   the  deceased  was  aware   that  a  safety  net  had  been

installed  just  below  the  8th  floor  level  to  protect  some  building  workers  and  that  Ronald  Opus  would  not  have  been  able  to   complete  his  suicide  the  way  he  had  planned. The  room  on  the  9th  floor,  where  the  shotgun  blast  emanated,  was  occupied  by

an   elderly   man   and   his   wife.     They   were   arguing   vigorously   and   he   was  threatening  her  with  a  shotgun!    The  man  was  so  upset  that  when  he  pulled  the  trigger,  he  completely  missed  his  wife  and  the  pellets  went  through  the  window,  striking  Mr  Opus. When  one  intends  to  kill  Subject  A  but  kills  Subject  B  instead,  one  is  guilty  of

the  murder  of  Subject  B.When  confronted  with  the  murder  charge,  the  old  man  and  his  wife  were  both

adamant,  and  both  said  they  thought  the  shotgun  was  not  loaded.    The  old  man  said  it  was  a  long-‐standing  habit  to  threaten  his  wife  with  the  unloaded  shotgun.    He  had  no  intention  to  murder  her. Therefore,   the   killing  of   Mr  Opus  appeared   to   be   an   accident,   assuming   the

gun  had  been  accidentally  loaded. The  continuing  investigation  turned  in  a  witness  who  saw  the  old  couple’s  son

loading  the  shotgun  about  6  weeks  prior  to  the  fatal  accident.    It  transpired  that  the   old   lady   had   cut   off   her   son’s   financial   support   and   the   son,   knowing  his  father’s   propensity   to   use   the   shotgun   threateningly,   loaded   the   gun  with   the  expectation  that  his  father  would  shoot  his  mother.    Since  the  loader  of  the  gun  was  aware  of   this,   he  was   guilty   of   the  murder   even  though  he  didn’t  actually  pull  the  trigger.    The  case  now  becomes  one  of  murder  on  the  part  of  the  son  for  the  death  of  Mr  Opus. Now  comes  the  twist:Further  investigation  revealed  that  the  son  was,  in  fact,  Ronald  Opus.    He  had

become  increasingly  despondent  over  the  failure  of  this  attempt  to  engineer  his  mother’s  murder.     This   led   him  to   jump  off   the   ten-‐storey   building   on  March  23rd,  only  to  be  killed  by  a  shotgun  blast  passing  through  the  9th  storey  window.    The  son,  Ronald  Opus,  had  accidently  murdered  himself. So  the  medical  examiner  closed  the  case  as  a  suicide.

Open the BookOpen  the  Book  is  the  name  that  has  been  given  to  a  new  initiative  that  has  come  from  Anglican  members  in  an  area  of  Gloucestershire.  Basically  it  calls  for  a  number  of  communicants  to  make  regular  visits  to  schools  in  their  area  to  read  stories  from  the  Bible,  primarily  from  the  Old  Testament.  It  is  not  seen  as  an  attempt  to  indoctrinate,  but  as  a  means  of  passing  on  the  well  loved  stories  from  the  Bible.

The  Rev.  Alison  Jones  of  St  Paul’s,  Sketty  has  started  to  try  and  introduce  this  movement  into  the  schools  of  our  area  and  in  recent  meetings  Cila  Primary  and  Penyfro  Primary  have  both  agreed  to  experience  ‘Open  the  Book’  at  either  whole  class  assemblies  or  class  assemblies.  Dunvant  and  Hendrefoilan  primaries  have  not  yet  been  approached,  but  it  is  hoped  that  they  will  respond  in  the  near  future.

In  order  to  present  the  programme,  which  is  laid  out  in  detail  in  the  guide,  it  is  hoped  that,  from  the  congregations  of  St  Hilary’s  and  St.  Martin’s,  we  might  get  enough  volunteers  to  carry  out  the  venture.  It  is  hoped  to  organise  a  small  group  of  readers  who  will  be  willing  to  visit  either  or  both  of  these  schools  on  a  weekly/fortnightly  rota.  The  days  chosen  by  the  schools  are  Tuesdays  and  Wednesdays  and  the  time  mid  morning  i.e.  between  10:00  and  11:00  am.  The  length  of  the  visit  would  not  be  longer  than  a  half  an  hour.  The  amount  of  reading  that  each  individual  will  deliver  is  not  excessive  and  comes  from  “The  Lion  Book  of  Bible  Stories”  which  will  be  given  to  you.

The  two  schools  approached  are  very  keen  to  welcome  you  all  and  we  hope  that  those  who  are  prepared  to  give  of  their  service  will  experience  a  great  degree  of  gratification  by  doing  it.

We  hope  to  start  in  the  month  of  March  and  so  will  welcome  any  volunteers  as  soon  as  possible.  For  the  present,  I  am  collecting  names  for  Rev.  Alison  and  so  can  answer  any  questions  that  you  might  have  and  record  your  interest.

Thank  youDavid  Morgan

?? Things to Ponder ??

Why isn’t ‘phonetic’ spelt the way it sounds?

How does the guy who drives the snowplough get to work in the morning?

What was the best thing before sliced bread?

How do you tell when you run out of invisible ink?

What happens if you get scared half to death twice?

Why can’t women put mascara on with their mouth closed?

What disease did ‘cured ham’ actually have?

Why is the third hand on a watch called the second hand?

Can an atheist get insurance against ‘Acts of God’?

Foul Play at TapestriThe Parish dinner was under way.

Raffle prizes filled the table. The vicar bought loads of tickets.

He had his eye on the Black Label.Oh joy! His number was first one out

But Mary had her own ideas. She chose the infamous fruit bowl.

The vicar was not best pleased.Tom Cole won the whisky.

What luck, his favourite kind.Little did he know

Father Tim had revenge in mind.

When Tom got up to danceThe vicar saw his chance.

He swopped a bottle of waterFor that golden Johnny Walker.

Fear not good Christian people,The vicar’s a really good bloke.

The whisky restored,Small drams were poured

And everyone laughed at the joke.
