The Vicar Writes……..January 2014
Dear Friends
A woman walked into her bathroom at home. As she did, she saw her husband weighing himself on the bathroom scales, sucking in his stomach. The woman thought to herself, "He thinks that he will weigh less by sucking in his stomach." The woman sarcastically said to her husband, "That's not going to help." Her husband said, "Of course it will. It's the only way I can see the numbers."Many of us will have made New Year's resolutions. Most of us start the New Year with great expectations and new intentions. Many of us will plan to lose weight, get more exercise, or whatever. I was sorting through a bag the other day and found an old diary and remembered the thrill I used to get at having a new one. It dawned on me that life is like a diary. At this time of year I would have two, one old and used, its pages marked. The corners bent. More than a few pages would have coffee stains. The cover cracked and worn. The second one, on the other hand, fresh and new. Only a page or two touched. No coffee stains yet. The cover still stiff and clean. The one for the new year is unused. It won't remain that way for long. Those books were more than diaries. They were an illustration of life. An old year has passed. We have filled it with all kinds of activities and events. Some were important. Others just happened. The old year contains memories of good times and bad. It is marked with scars and stains of life. A new year lies before us as fresh and clean as an unused diary. It waits to record the events of life. Someday it too will be stained and bent. For now, it is new, unmarked, and overflowing with potential. There's something special about a new calendar or diary, just like there is something special about a new year. In a sense, the New Year is artificial. It is just like any other day. The sun will rise and set. The weather will change. It is just another day. But emotionally, a new year is different. It is not just another day. It is a new day, a new beginning. Parish of Killay January 20143
An unknown poet catches the spirit of this time of the year in the poem-‐-‐New LeafHe came to my desk, with a quivering lip.The lesson was done.Have you a new leaf for me, teacher.I have spoiled this one.I took his leaf, all soiled and blottedAnd gave him a new one, all unspotted. Then into his stirred heart I smiled"Do better now my child."I went to the throne with a trembling heart. The year was done.Have you a new year for me, FatherI have spoiled this one.He took my year, all soiled and blottedAnd gave me a new one, all unspottedAnd into my tired heart He smiled,"Do better now, my child."May our new year to be more than just another day. May it be a new beginning and may God give us grace to learn from the past and do better.Mary, Tom, Ben and I would like to thank everyone for their kind cards and gifts this Christmas. On behalf of myself and the family may I wish you all a blessed and prosperous new year.Every Blessing
Christmas AppealCan I remind you of my annual Christmas appeal for Wakisa Ministries in Kampala Uganda. They care for pregnant teenagers, giving pre and postnatal care and teach them tailoring, gardening and cooking and resettle them safely back into the community. Before I visited last year their hostel burnt down and they need to rebuild it. So if you would like to support this appeal please put your money in an envelope, mark it Christmas Appeal and give it to the Church Wardens as soon as possible. Thank you for your generosity.THANKSMy sincere thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make the St Nicholas Fayre, the raffle, the Christmas Tree exhibition and the Christmas services so successful.
Our Vision: A family, rooted in Christ, committed to transforming lives by:Gathering as God’s people – Growing more like Jesus – Going out in the power of the Spirit.

Parish NewsWe pray for all who are ill at this time or in Nursing Homes – particularly remembering those being cared for at home and those who are caring for them: Phyllis Harries, Emlyn Bawden, Peter Dickman, Joan Davies, Beattie Loosemore, Joyce Leonard, Olwen & John Iles, Joan Dobbs and Graham Treharne. Verona Thomas is now resident at the Old Vicarage Nursing Home. Barbara Jones is in Singleton Hospital but hopes to be home early in the new year.
Joan, Graham, Barbara and Verona send their good wishes to all their church family for 2014 and thank them for their visits, cards and gifts.
We send our sincere sympathy to the friends and family of Mrs Marjory Knight who died last month. Marjory was a regular communicant at St Martin’s Church where she will be sadly missed. She was a lady with a wide knowledge of many things: music, reading, poetry, gardening and was a great walker -‐ her friends at the funeral who accompanied her on her walks were delighted that her son-‐in-‐law made mention of this pastime. We send our love and prayers to her daughter and family.
We send our sympathy to Babs Roberts, Sarah and Simon on the death of Roy, who died at home with them on 3rd December. From the age of 15, Roy had travelled the world with the RAF for 25 years. He returned to Swansea in 1977 and, again for 25 years, worked as a laboratory technician at Olchfa School. He and Babs celebrated 50 years of marriage in August. Babs, Sarah and Simon thank all at St Hilary’s and St Martin’s for their love and support. The prayers, cards, flowers and attendance at Roy’s funeral has been a great comfort to them at this sad time.
We send our sympathy also to Denise Rogers on the death of her dear daughter, Sue who had been unwell for some time. Sue lived away for many years but will be fondly missed by her family and many friends in Killay.
We send our love and sympathy to Melinda Smith on the sudden death of her only daughter Carole Lucca. Carole was a much loved mother of Claire and Adam and a loving grandmother to Heidi and Isaac. Melinda asks to record her thanks to Father Tim and all her church family for the cards, messages of sympathy and attendance at Carole’s funeral -‐ it has helped her enormously.
Parish of Killay January 20148
We have just heard the sad news that Bob Massey-‐Shaw has died. Bob and his lovely wife, Muriel, were much respected members of our church family; we will say more in next month’s magazine. We send our prayers and love to his and Muriel’s family. May they rest in peace.
Members of the Parish of Killay wish to thank Father Tim for his work during Advent and at the Christmas services. We are so fortunate to have had so many meaningful services celebrating the birth of Jesus and ‘all the saints’. The crib service was, again, full to capacity and it was a joy to see the faces of the children. All services were well attended and appreciated. Prayers and love to Father Tim, Mary, Tom and Ben for 2014 from us all.
Thanks and appreciation to Peter Carder and the choir of St Hilary’s Church for the music and singing during Advent and the Christmas services. Although the music and singing is enjoyed during the year, it seems particularly special during church festivals. Good wishes are sent to Peter and the choir for 2014.
To any member of our church family who is not feeling well or is
distressed at this time, please contact Father Tim. There are a small number of trained pastoral care visitors in our
Parish who will always try to accommodate a request.

Christmas Trees will be taken down on Monday 6th Jan 2014.Beryl Harris will be in Church from 9.45am on the Monday (this being the last day for trees). Any extra help would be appreciated. Any problems with the day please contact Beryl, tel. 208502. A big thank you to all the people that got involved with the tree festival this year, including the local schools; all the local business who sponsored the trees. A total of £376 was raised by the festival.
Ladies GuildOn Wednesday 27th November, 45 Guild members attended our annual Christmas Dinner which, this year, was held at Tapestri. We enjoyed an excellent meal, in very pleasant surroundings, decorated for the occasion; the manager and staff could not have been more helpful. During the meal
Jonathon Lycett entertained us with well known tunes on the keyboard and after this Father Tim distributed Gift vouchers to Gwynneth and committee members in recognition of their hard work throughout the year. Later the raffle was drawn, then Jonathon sang songs from the musicals following which he became the DJ, (in his words “the first and last time”!).Our thanks to Gwynneth for arranging a most enjoyable evening.
b
Marian Williams led the “members own” meeting the following week when members were invited to make Christmas cards. Most members participated and enjoyed the experience. Expect hand made cards next year !!
b
Our final meeting of the session was the annual combined carol concert with Mothers Union which was very well attended. Our thanks to Father Tim, Canon Geoffrey and all the ladies who read the lessons. Later, we adjourned to the hall for sherry and mince pies when the church Christmas raffle was drawn. Several of those present, or family members, were fortunate to win prizes. Thanks to Dave and Mary Jones for organising a very profitable event.
b
Gwynneth and the committee would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy New Year.

Mothers’ UnionOur two meetings in December were very much celebrations for Christmas. On the 3rd, we held our annual Christmas lunch in Sketty Hall. As usual, the atmosphere was festive, the meal for 33 people tasty and well presented. We were pleased to welcome Father Tim and Canon Geoffrey as our guests. After lunch Carole, Branch Leader, welcomed and thanked all attending and gave a short talk before Father Tim entertained us with amusing stories and jokes to much laughter and applause. We ended the afternoon with our usual raffle and everyone left with a present from the Bran Tub.
aOn December 11th, we joined with Ladies Guild for a carol service led by Father Tim, who chose carols and eight readings appropriate for Advent. We retired to the Parish Centre for mince pies and sherry served by members of Ladies Guild. The parish raffle was drawn by Father Tim and the evening was enjoyed by all.
aWe start our meetings again on Tuesday, January 21st, 2014 with corporate communion in church at 2:00 pm and then the Annual General Meeting in the Parish Centre.
aDon’t forget the monthly M.U. communion in St Mary’s Church on January 3rd 2014 at 11:00 am. Sandra Banks, Secretary

Timothy and Tituswhat local church leadership should look like!Timothy and Titus are the saints for you if you’ve been a Christian for some time, and now realise that God wants you to move into some form of leadership. A daunting prospect! The books of First and Second Timothy and Titus are what are known as the
three pastoral letters, where Paul writes to ministers in charge of important churches instead of writing to the churches themselves. Paul gives both Timothy and Titus explicit instructions for how to shepherd the sheep in their care. Timothy had been given the responsibility of the church at Ephesus, and Titus the care of the church at Crete. Both Timothy and Titus were young men, and both felt quite daunted at the task ahead of them!
Timothy, half Jewish, had met Paul when he was still a child, living with his mother Eunice at Lystra. Paul had come to their city and preached, and they had both become Christians. Timothy had then accompanied Paul on his second missionary journey – a great training experience. But experience is given to us so that we might in turn become productive – and, in due course, Paul entrusted the vastly important church of Ephesus into Timothy’s care. This church was so vibrant in its faith that within 50 years, so many Ephesians became Christians that the city’s pagan temples were almost forsaken. A huge responsibility!Titus was a gentile, almost certainly another convert of Paul’s. Paul had used Titus as a trouble-‐shooter with the Corinthians, and when Titus was successful in that, gave him a real bit of trouble -‐ the church at Crete. Again, Titus served his Lord faithfully, even in this most difficult of situations. So if you are going to attempt any leadership for God, why not make time to read the three pastoral epistles first? They have been an invaluable handbook for Christian leaders for 20 centuries, and are full of spiritual wisdom and good common sense. If they worked for Timothy and Titus, they may work for you as well!Timothy became the first bishop of Ephesus, and was finally martyred when he opposed pagan festivals (probably in honour of Dionysius). He was killed by stones and clubs, easily to hand during the pagan festival of Katagogia. His supposed relics were translated to Constantinople in 356.Titus went on to become the first Bishop of Crete, and is believed to have died there, though history does not tell us how. His relics are supposed to be buried in Crete except for his head which was, allegedly, taken to Venice in 823.Both Timothy and Titus were good and faithful servants, and could look back on lives well spent. Imagine -‐ one day you will stand before the Lord, as well, and say: “This is what I did with the leadership role you entrusted to me. Was I a good and faithful servant, too?”Parish of Killay January 201413

How will the after-effects of the credit crunch affect your life in 2014?
We all know the story: in August of 2007 the economic boom went bust, when the worldwide credit crunch began with the troubles of a French investment bank. The credit crunch turned into a financial crisis, which turned into a nasty and deep recession. Businesses collapsed, salaries were frozen, interest rates were slashed and the age of austerity arrived. Now we are told that economic prosperity is around the corner. But how did the credit crunch affect you? The life you now see as ‘normal’ may have been affected in some of the following ways:
1. The £10 Friday feast. When we could not afford restaurants, canny supermarkets stepped in with a new trend: dine-‐in-‐for-‐£10. The upmarket ready meal’s day had come: now it is a staple of millions of us on a Friday or Saturday night.
2. Bricks and family life. We couldn’t afford to move up, and our children could not afford to move out. So we crawled into our lofts and cellars and ‘did them up’ instead. Meanwhile, divorce fell by 23 % – who could afford another home?
3. Sobriety. We drank less: from, on average, 9.2 litres of pure alcohol a year to less than 8 litres. The hike in VAT helped here.
Parish of Killay January 201414
4. Cleaner air. We couldn’t afford new cars, and we drove our existing ones less. Government statistics suggest that particle pollution fell by 14 per cent in towns, and now an extra one million people cycle regularly.
5. Grow your own. Buying and eating local produce and growing-‐your-‐own soared in popularity. Now we are proud to make our own sandwiches; there has even been a boom in lunch-‐box sales!
6. Bad teeth. We stuffed ourselves with sweets and chocolate to cheer us up, but also cut back on expensive visits to the
dentist. The result was predictable, as the British Dental Association recorded a rise in emergencies...
7. Shopping. Food was expensive! So we turned to funny sounding supermarkets like Lidl and Aldi – and fell in love with them. Value ranges became a huge success, as did round-‐pound pricing (£2 rather than £1.99, so we could more easily watch our budget as we went up the aisles.)
8. Farewell to puddings. When we ate out, we trimmed our bills, and the sweet trolley suffered. 96 million fewer puddings were consumed on restaurant premises in 2012. (Instead, we enjoyed making cupcakes at home.)
9. Adverts on TV. The broadcasters put pressure on Ofcom, the regulator, to help them attract revenue and so channels were allowed to up the ads. Now, TV dramas share their hour with not seven minutes of adverts, but 12. (Which is why you seem to spend so long on those Viking River Cruises.)
10. Bye-‐bye pets. Many of us were not willing to share the hard times with our pets -‐ the RSPCA reported that the number of abandoned cats and dogs rose by 65 %.
11. Fashion changed. We spent less time out on the town, and more time in on the couch; the sale of pyjamas went up. (And curiously enough, Y-‐fronts for men.)
12. Staycations and Glamping. We thought up new exotic words such as setjetting, sofalize, glamping and staycations to persuade ourselves that two weeks on a damp campsite in Norfolk was as glamorous as St Tropez. It wasn’t.
What will you change in your lifestyle when times get better?

RESIDENTS OF TY CILAThis article is to highlight the plight of some of the residents in Ty Cila, Killay. Our four long term residents of Ty Cila, Killay have been informed by Social Services that they will have to leave what they feel is their home and be integrated into the community in other parts of Swansea. These residents, who have severe physical disabilities, are very anxious and upset at this prospect and have contacted me to help “fight their corner”.A number of meetings have taken place between the residents, Social Services, disability groups and myself but these have drawn a blank. Social Services are adamant in their stance which is making the residents more anxious.Social Services are maintaining that they are using a policy statement by the CSSIW (Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales) that Ty Cila must be a respite facility or a residential facility only. They then however say that the facility can be unitised (physically divided) but this is not financially viable. I have looked at the last two CSSIW reports which do not mention the make up of the home and a further telephone call to the CSSIW resulted in me being told that it is up to the Local Authority to decide on the make up of the home. Evidently we have a difference of opinion!Returning to the residents, they are part of our community in Killay and would really welcome the support of our community. We can all play our part in supporting their corner by writing to the Evening Post, signing a petition that is being drawn up and generally showing our displeasure in the treatment of what are vulnerable adults. The involvement of the press and television in this campaign would I am sure highlight the residents dilemma. Personalities who would support us would be most welcome. My wife Mary and I understand the way Social Services are currently provided needs to change. The evidence is that younger adults should be integrated into the community. Our residents in Ty Cila are not however young adults and are really frightened of proposed changes to their lives. They have always felt happy, safe and secure in Ty Cila.
Please support them when the opportunity arises.Jeff Jones

PramgroupOur annual Nativity & Carol service followed by the usual party was held on December 2nd this year as Inset Days for the Primary schools clashed with our original date later in December. Our numbers have been very low at times this year, more so than usual so we really had no idea how many little ones we were likely to see. In the event we welcomed 17 children & their families so we were delighted. Some had brought party bits with them as well which is always welcome.Once all had arrived Margaret led them into church singing the usual Jingle Bells. We must try to acquire some more bells as they do enjoy ringing them. Father Tim was waiting for us & once all were more or less settled he started to tell us the Nativity Story. This was interspersed at appropriate times with carols accompanied by Tim’s “magic Box”! The woollen figures are surviving with some running repairs from Geraldine and as the story progressed the little ones gained in confidence & were soon sitting with Tim on the kneelers in front of the Communion Rail. One shepherd was very obstinate & kept wandering off with the sheep going in another direction. The Kings kept trying to arrive early but Baby Jesus actually remained in the manger throughout. The biggest problem was the donkey who definitely wanted to be elsewhere. We would like to appeal once again for a knitted cow if only to keep the donkey company. At the end they all sang the songs they had been practicing: ”Away in a Manger” & “ Once a Star Shone” before trooping back up to the hall for the party. Goodies galore had been laid out by Jan, Susan & Margaret & the food disappeared quite rapidly.Once again we should like to comment on how all the little ones sat around the tables to start with & although a few of the younger ones went to play with the toys the serious eaters stayed! The sound of a bell was heard & Father Christmas appeared with his sack. Only one tiny one had to be comforted the rest were very happy to talk to him & to receive their books. It was nice that Father Tim was able to spend some time with us this year. All hands to the pump & the clearing up was done with Margaret & Joan leading them in their usual singing time at the end with a rousing rendition of “Baa Baa Black Sheep” to end what had been a very happy afternoon. Balloons were distributed & the Christmas story had been told to another group of children. Our thanks to Father Tim, Margaret & Joan for the Singing & general support, assorted gentlemen who put the toys out & away every week, to our tea ladies & to the Mums, Grandparents & the children themselves for supporting us.A Happy & Healthy New Year to all.

Christmas greetings from BruckmühlDear Mike and Sylvia,Thank you very much for your kind Christmas greetings and the lovely pictures from St. Hilary's. We too wish you a blessed Christmas and a healthy and peaceful new year of our Lord Jesus Christ 2014.I was going to write to you anyway, as I have got one good and two sad news for you:The first sad news is that it is getting less and less likely by the day, that there will be another camp in Wales next year. Six weeks ago I have written to over 300 young people, confirmation students and ex-‐confirmation students, members of the youth choir and group members of our last three camps in Wales, asking them if they would be seriously interested in taking part (before we start the whole preparation ‘machinery’, which once running cannot so easily be stopped), and only 36 of them have answered so far. These 36 are extremely keen (and will be appropriately disappointed, if there is no camp), but still it’s only 36, and that is far too little. We need at least 50-‐55 to run and finance (!) the camp, and we are far off. This morning I sent a reminder. Maybe that will help.I will wait until the end of the Christmas holidays and the beginning of school in January. Then we will decide (and of course let you know). The second sad news, much sadder than the first, is that Lisa (our choir leader, you remember) and her husband Jan, who got married legally shortly after our last camp in 2012, are no longer together. Lisa has left Jan this summer. Her ‘feelings had changed’, was the reason she gave. The church wedding, planned for last September took no longer place. We were (and are) all very shocked, and Jan, as you can imagine, is devastated. Nobody understands it, but who can see inside peoples‘ minds? On the other hand she is still the choir leader and Jan is still one of our church elders, so the situation is sometimes difficult. But now the good news: Three weeks ago, after 11 months of preparing, practising, recording and mixing, the new CD of our youth choir came out. And it seems to become a smashing hit, very ‘modern’, youthful and full of life and joy and energy.Last Saturday, December 14th, we gave a “release concert“ in our church here in Bruckmühl, the house was packed full, and it was a huge success. In
Parish of Killay January 201418
the regional newspaper we got two enthusiastic articles which I enclose. Over the last three weeks we sold already some 400 CDs, which is very good and much better than when the first four CDs came out.The next big thing will be a concert in Munich-‐Stadelheim behind walls and bars. Since 1998 we’ve performed seven concerts in Germany’s biggest jail -‐ quite a special experience for all of us, kids and adults. The reception by the inmates has always been sensational, and we are really looking forward to it. Then it will be back to normal procedures: Sunday services, confirmation services in May, weddings in the summer and so on.Apart from that it has been a quite successful year with lots a activities, two very successful ecumenical pilgrim journeys, first the Holy Land in February with 70 people and then Rome (for the fifth time) at the end of August with 100 people, all very interesting. Coming March we will follow the footsteps of Saint Paul and spend a week in Turkey including Istanbul / Constantinople with a group of 80. As it seems we could open our own ecumenical travel agency. So all is not lost. And now we are looking forward to celebrate the birth of our Saviour. The word has become flesh, the eternal God has become a mortal human, the King of Kings a helpless babe in a crib: the biggest wonder of all and the foundation of all that we believe in.Yours sincerely in the love of Christ – and love to everyone at St. Hilary’s,Harald
Greetings to you all at Bruckmühl from all your Swansea friends
Hi Harald and friends from a very stormy Swansea! We have had much rain and gale force winds her in Killay but fortunately we are well in land and well above sea level. We have had many services in St Hilarys in this Advent season and a Christmas tree festival with 15 brightly lit trees, some of which you will see attached. It all helps to brighten the winter gloom as we await the coming of the Light of the world who came amongst us on that first Christmas. So we hope you all have a happy and HOLY Christmas and good health and happiness in 2014.With love and best wishes to you all.Mike and Sylvia PowellOn behalf of all at St Hilary's Church
