The Vicar Writes……August  2014

ear FriendsAs  I  write  this,  Mary  and  I  are  preparing  for  our  annual  holiday.  There  are  two  things  that  strike  me  about  holidays. How  do  you  feel  when  you’re  about  to  set  off  on  a  holiday?  Can’t  control  the  smiles,  can’t  hold  in  the  anticipation  of  discovering  new  landscapes,  and  the  promise  of  exciting  adventures!  How  exciting  would  life  be  if  we  started  everyday  with  that  same  holiday  feeling!  Set  off  with  a  smile,  an  anticipation  of  discovering  something  new,  a  promise  of  an  adventure,  and  make  everyday  feel  like  a  holiday. The  other  thing  about  holidays  is  rest.  This  is  true  whether  you  are  retired  or  working.  How  many  times  have  I  heard  a  retired  person  say  I  don't  know  how  I  had  time  to  work!Rest.  It’s  a  word  we  hear  often  enough,  but  do  we  really  understand  it’s  importance  in  our  lives?  When  I  read  through  the  Gospels  I  am  impressed  by  the  relaxed,  calm  pace  Jesus  kept  from  day  to  day.  You  never  once  see  Jesus  in  a  hurry.  Even  when  one  of  Jesus’  closest  friends,  Lazarus,  was  on  his  deathbed,  Jesus  took  His  time  getting  to  Bethany  to  be  with  him.  How  is  it  that  Jesus  moved  through  life  so  slowly  and  yet  accomplished  so  much?  Is  there  something  we  contemporary  Christians  have  missed?  I  am  reminded  of  a  story. It  seems  there  were  two  woodsmen.  One  day  one  woodsman  challenged  another  to  an  all-‐day  tree  chopping  contest.  The  challenger  worked  very  hard,  stopping  only  for  a  brief  lunch  break.  The  other  man  had  a  leisurely  lunch  and  took  several  breaks  during  the  day.  At  the  end  of  the  day,  the  challenger  was  surprised  and  annoyed  to  find  that  the  other  fellow  had  chopped  substantially  more  wood  than  he  had.“I  don’t  get  it,”  he  said.  “Every  time  I  checked,  you  were  taking  a  rest,  yet  you  chopped  more  wood  than  I  did.”  “But  you  didn’t  notice,”  said  the  winning  woodsman,  “that  I  was  sharpening  my  axe  when  I  sat  down  to  rest?”

Mark  6:31:  Then  Jesus  said,  "Let’s  get  away  from  the  crowds  for  a  while  and  rest."  There  were  so  many  people  coming  and  going  that  Jesus  and  his  apostles  didn’t  even  have  time  to  eat.  Rest  is  not  only  vital  to  our  spiritual  lives,  it  is  imperative  if  we  are  to  be  effective.  Christ  understood  this  principle  and  made  it  a  point  to  get  away,  both  with  His

disciples  and  by  Himself  from  time  to  time  in  order  to  rest  and  rejuvenate.  It  was  Jesus  way  of  “recharging”  His  spiritual,  physical  and  emotional  batteries.  In  doing  so,  He  set  an  example  for  you  and  I  to  follow.  We  are  a  people  too  busy  for  our  own  good,  too  busy  to  stop  and  realise  that  in  our  frantic  business  we  are  actually  accomplishing  less  and  ageing  more.According  to  a  Greek  legend,  in  ancient  Athens  a  man  noticed  the  great  storyteller  Aesop  playing  childish  games  with  some  little  boys.  He  laughed  and  jeered  at  Aesop,  asking  him  why  he  wasted  his  time  in  such  frivolous  activity.Aesop  responded  by  picking  up  a  bow,  loosening  its  string,  and  placing  it  on  the  ground.  Then  he  said  to  the  critical  Athenian,  “Now,  answer  the  riddle,  if  you  can.  Tell  us  what  the  unstrung  bows  implies.”  The  man  looked  at  it  for  several  moments  but  had  no  idea  what  point  Aesop  was  trying  to  make.  Aesop  explained,  “If  you  keep  a  bow  always  bent,  it  will  break  eventually,  but  if  you  let  it  go  slack,  it  will  be  more  fit  for  use  when  you  want  it.”  People  are  also  like  that.  That’s  why  we  all  need  to  take  time  to  rest.  In  today’s  Scripture,  Jesus  prescribed  time  off  for  His  wearied  disciples  after  they  had  returned  from  a  prolonged  period  of  ministry.  And  in  the  Old  Testament,  God  set  a  pattern  for  us  when  He  “rested  from  all  His  work”  (Gen.  2:3).  Shouldn’t  we  take  His  example  seriously?  Start  by  setting  aside  a  special  time  to  relax  physically  and  renew  yourself  emotionally  and  spiritually.  You  will  be  at  your  best  for  God  if  you  have  taken  time  to  loosen  the  bow.So  I  hope  that  over  the  next  month  or  so  you  will  all  have  time  to  loosen  the  bow  so  that  together  -‐  refreshed,  we  may  meet  the  challenges  that  come  our  way  as  we  seek  to  bring  His  Kingdom  to  those  whom  we  meet.Yours  in  Christ

Our  Vision:    A  family,  rooted  in  Christ,  committed  to  transforming  lives  by:Gathering  as  God’s  people  –  Growing  more  like  Jesus  –  Going  out  in  the  power  of  the  Spirit.

Parish  NewsWe  pray  for  all  who  are  ill  at  this  time  or  in  Nursing  Homes,  particularly  remembering  those  being  cared  for  at  home  and  for  those  who  are  caring  for  them:    Phyllis  Harries,  Emlyn  Bawden,  Joan  Davies,  Beatie  Loosemore,  Olwen  &  John  Iles,  Joan  Dobbs,  Brian  Smale.    We  also  send  our  love  to  Eunice  Miron,  Gwyneth  &  Tom  Bartley.

Gwyneth  &  Tommy  send  their  sincere  thanks  to  Fr  Tim  and  church  family  for  the  prayers  and  messages  of  support  received  during  a  very  difficult  few  weeks. ✟

Congratulations  to  our  very  own  David  Morgan.    He  has  been  appointed  READ  EMIRATUS  -‐  this  honour  was  conferred  on  him  by  the  Bishop.    David  has  served  our  Parish  as  a  Lay  Reader  for  more  than  20  years  and  the  honour  is  well  deserved.    We  are  really  pleased  and  happy  for  you  David.

Once  again,  Congratulations  are  in  order  for  Elaine  &  Ken  Graves.    A  great  grand-‐daughter,  Callee,  born  to  their  grandson  Callum  and  Louise.    From  now  on,  Ken  will  not  have  a  full  wallet!

✟  It  was  with  great  sadness  that  we  heard  of  the  death  of  Peter  Dickman  -‐  a  kind,  loyal  and  caring  gentleman.    Although  he  had  been  in  Brynfield  Manor  for  a  couple  of  years,  we  all  remember  him,  and  his  dear  wife  Kay,  living  in  Ashgrove.    Peter,  who  was  born  in  1921  at  Kettering,  Northants,  met  Kay  during  his  war  service  with  the  RAF.    He  was  stationed  at  Fairwood  and  Kay  (who  lived  in  the  Uplands)    was  working  in  Sketty  Post  Office.    They  married  in  1947,  went  to  live  in  Corby,  where  Peter  worked  for  Stewart  &  Lloyds  (later  British  Steel).    They  had  2  daughters,  Lynne  and  the  late  Margaret.    On  his  retirement,  he  wanted  to  return  to  the  place  he  loved,  Swansea,  and  they  settled  in  Ashgrove.    They  both  were  regular  worshippers  at  St  Hilary’s  Church  and  Peter  was  a  sidesman  for  many  years.    He  was  passionate  about  anything  to  do  with  the  RAF  and  cars  and  he  carried  out  his  Yoga  ritual  daily.    He  supported  Kay  with  her  hobbies  and  interests  but,  sadly,  she  passed  away  two  years  ago.    Peter  found  the  years  without  her  very  hard  to  bear  but  always  welcomed  visitors  to  the  Nursing  Home  with  his  usual  courteous  manner.    We  send  our  sympathy  to  Lynne  and  to  sons-‐in-‐law  Peter  and  George  and  to  grandchildren  and  great  grandchildren.

From  September  until  the  end  of  November,  coffee  will  be  available  every  Sunday  after  morning  service  at  the  Parish  Centre.    Of  course,  volunteers  will  be  needed  -‐  please  speak  to  Beryl  or  Val  with  the  Sundays  when  you  can  help.

Our  final  evening  before  the  summer  break,  was  a  visit  to  Llanelly  House,  a  grade  1  listed  Georgian  manor  house  in  Llanelli.  The  house  was  a  finalist  on  the  BBC  programme  “Restoration”  and  was  championed  by  Laurence  Llewelyn  Bowen. The  house  was  home  to  seven  generations  of  the  Stepney  family.  Restoration  began  in  2003  and  was  opened  to  the  public  ten  years  later.  We  were  given  a  tour  of  the  reputedly  haunted  house  and  shown  a  video  of  the  restoration  work.  It  was  most  interesting. Our  last  stop  of  the  evening  was  to  the

Ashburnam  Golf  club  for  a  meal  and  fellowship.  The  evening  was  very  enjoyable,  the  warm  and  friendly  atmosphere  compensated  for  the  food,  which  although  delicious,  was  a  little  cool.

Gwynneth  and  the  committee  wish  everyone  an  enjoyable  summer  holiday  and  look  forward  to  seeing  you  all  on  3  September  for  our  service  in  church  at  7.30pm.

Around  the  main  inscription  are  four  Bible  texts:

THE  LORD  KNOWETH  THEM  THAT  ARE  HIS  (top)  2  Timothy  2:19

UNKNOWN  AND  YET  WELL  KNOWN,  DYING  AND  BEHOLD  WE  LIVE  (side)  2  Corinthians  6:9

IN  CHRIST  SHALL  ALL  BE  MADE  ALIVE  (base)  1  Corinthians  15:22

GREATER  LOVE  HATH  NO  MAN  THAN  THIS  (side)  John  15:13

These  four  Bible  verses  were  chosen  because  many  of  those  who  fought  and  died  100  years  ago  believed:

•  God  exists

•  We  are  known  individually  by  him

•  Jesus  Christ  made  it  possible  for  us  to  know  God

•  Because  of  Jesus,  we  can  have  life  after  death

When  we  are  silent,  sometimes  we  can  become  more  aware  of  God’s  presence.  Just  as  troops  on  the  battlefields  called  out  to  God,  you  can  talk  to  him  about  the  big  issues  in  your  life.

Most  people  pray  at  some  time  in  their  lives.  In  war  and  in  peacetime,  throughout  history,  men  and  women  have  called  out  to  God.  Prayer  connects  us  with  God.  You  can  use  your  own  words  or  the  following  words  of  King  David,  written  around  3,000  years  ago.

Hear  my  prayer…  When  I  am  in  distress,  I  call  to  you,  because  you  answer  me.

Psalm  86  verses  6  &  7

Many  soldiers  and  their  families  found  comfort  and  strength  in  Psalms  like  these  and  in  talking  to  the  God  who  promises:  ‘You  will  seek  me  and  find  me  when  you  seek  me  with  all  your  heart.’  Jeremiah  chapter  29  verse  13

Mothers’  UnionOn  July  1st,  we  held  our  summer  tea  party.    The  committee  assembled  early  in  the  Parish  Centre  to  prepare  the  repast  and  set  the  tables,  which  were  laid  with  white  lace  cloths  and  looked  very  festive  set  with  scones,  jam  &  cream  and  plates  of  assorted  cakes. The  raffle  table  soon  had  a  variety  of  donated  prizes  with  a  queue  forming  to  buy  raffle  tickets.    The  Bring  &  Buy  table  was  well  stocked  and  trade  was  brisk  to  purchase  many  bargains.  Before  tea  commenced,  Branch  Leader,  Carole,  welcomed  members

and  friends,  explaining  the  purpose  and  aims  of  the  Mothers’  Union.    Father  Tim  was  unable  to  be  with  us  but  we  were  fortunate  to  be  joined  by  Canon  Geoffrey,  who  gave  an  amusing  dialogue  between  a  baby  camel  and  his  mammy  in  Africa,  an  explanation  of  why  camels  have  humps  and  large  feet.    We  don’t  quite  understand  how  the  kangaroo  became  involved! After  the  tea,  which  was  enjoyed  by  all,  Canon  Geoffrey

called  the  winning  raffle  numbers,  bringing  an  end  to  an  enjoyable  afternoon  of  fellowship.

d

Remember  Mary  Sumner  on  August  9th,  the  founder  of  the  Mothers’  Union,  and  on  August  23rd,  the  wave  of  prayer  will  be  held  in  church  between  9:00  am  and  10:00  am.    This  is  always  a  very  calm  and  enjoyable  hour  with  music  and  readings.

d

We  will  commence  again  in  September  with  a  quiet  hour  on  September  1st  in  St  Mary’s,  Swansea  at  2:00  pm  and,  on  September  2nd,  our  meeting  will  start  with  corporate  communion  in  church  at  2:00  pm  led  by  Father  Tim.

d

Finally,  all  members  of  St  Hilary’s  Mothers’  Union  wish  Carole  and  Alan  Pickard  a  very  Happy  50th  Wedding  Anniversary  on  August  1st  and  thank  them  for  their  hard  work  on  our  behalf.

Music  SocietyA  very  repectable  number  of  friends  and  visitors,  together  with  a  good  turn  out  from  the  membership,  helped  to  swell  the  attendance  at  the  Coffee  Evening  organised  for  the  July  meeting  and  no  one  went  away  disappointed  after  being  beautifully  entertained  by  principal  members  of  Uplands  Arts.    The  programme  was  devoted  to  excerpts  from  the  works  of  Gilbert  &  Sullivan  with  many  of  the  chosen  numbers  taken  from  the  lesser  known  works.    Several  of  the  performers  are  household  names  when  it  comes  to  Gilbert  &  Sullivan. The  programme  opened  with  a  number  from  ‘The  Pirates  of  Penzance’  which  was  performed  by  the  whole  company.    This  was  followed  by  a  trilogy  from  ‘Ruddigore’  with  Catherine  Brown,  Claire  Hanney  and  Adrian  Williams  taking  part.    This  was  followed  by  two  numbers  from  ‘The  Mikado’  by  Andrew  Powell  and  Claire.    Amy  Hart  sang  a  number  from  ‘Sorceror’,  and  excerpts  from  ‘Princess  Ida’  were  the  next  two  selections  sung  by  Catherine  Brown  and  Bronwen    Beckett.    Andrew  Richards  then  sang  a  number  from

‘Iolanthe’  before  Adrian  Williams  and  the  whole  company  sang  the  popular  number  from  ‘H.M.S.  Pinafore’  entitled  ‘When  I  was  a  Lad’  and  Bronwen  followed  that  with  another  item  from  ‘Pinafore’.The  programme  was  rounded  off  with

several  numbers  from  ‘Yeomen  of  the  Guard’  as  a  preview  to  Uplands  Arts  forthcoming  performance  of  that  Opera  and  performed  by  Dafydd  Mills,  Andrew  Powell,  Catherine  Brown  and  the  whole  company. The  evening  was  compered  by  Ann  Cowper  with  some  amusing  anecdotal  situations  and  all  the  music  was  superbly  accompanied  by  Roger  Hart  who  was  responsible  for  devising  the

whole  programme.Father  Tim  thanked  Roger  and  all  the  artistes  for  a  very  enjoyable  evening  and  impresed  upon  the  audience  the  importance  of  supporting  amateur  musical  theatre  productions.    Slips  were  passed  around  reminding  everyone  of  this  responsibility  when  Uplands  Arts  perform  ‘The  Yeoman  of  the  Guard’  at  Taliesin  from  24th  -‐  27th  September,  2014  to  commence  at  7:15  pm.    Tickets  may  be  obtained  from  the  ticket  secretary  Tel  No:  581162.Please  support.

With  a  few  hours  of  hard  work  by  a  team  of  girls  (and  a  few  boys)  and  many  generous  donations  of  fabulous  handbags,  scarves  and  jewellery,  we  managed  to  raise  a  handsome  amount  for  church  funds,  in  the  region  of  £500.  It  certainly  seemed  to  back  up  the  well  known  saying  that  a  girl  can  never  have  too  many  bags  and  the  sale  presented  an  opportunity  both  to  have  a  clear  out  and  a  re-‐stocking  at  bargain  prices.  Many,  many  thanks  to  all  those  who  donated,  cleaned,  sorted  and  set  up;  to  those  who  baked,  made  coffee  and  washed  up;  to  those  who  cleared  up  after,  and  to  those  who  took  every  opportunity  to  sell,  sell,  sell.

APHORISM: A short, pointed sentence that expresses a wise or clever observation or a general truth.

The nicest thing about the future is that it always starts tomorrow.

Always be yourself because the people that matter don't mind and the ones that mind don't matter.

Be careful about reading the fine print - there's no way you're going to like it.

No one ever says "It's only a game" when their team is winning.

There are worse things than getting a call for a wrong number at 4 a.m - for example, it could be the right number.

Why is it that, at class reunions, you feel younger than everyone else looks?
