February 2014
Dear Quilting Friends,
With winter being so cold and somewhat snowy, it keeps us inside, happily quilt-
ing. There are lots of projects on my list, finishing things for the quilt show, and
making gifts for family and friends but displaying them at the quilt show first!
The quilt show is well under way, with many members planning and preparing
for our next Quilt Show, May 2 and 3. There are lots of things to do to help, so
plan to help out in any way you can. Between now and then, look for people
who might place an ad in the booklet, distribute flyers and bookmarks to every-
one you see, and sign up in the next few months, to work at the show.
The annual UFO Auction will be underway February 20th. It’s always fun to
look over the items donated, and come home with a treasure or two. Look ahead
to future programs on the blog, and sign up for a workshop to learn a new quilt-
ing trick. Maybe by the next workshop, the snowy season will be over, and you
won’t have to drive home after clearing 8 fluffy
inches of snow from your car! We were having
such a good time, we didn’t want to go home early!
Keep quilting! Bev
February 20 UFO AUCTION Come one come all! Bring your relatives and friends. The guest fee
is free in February for the annual UFO auction. We are loaded with treas-
ures and we will all have some fun at the auction buying them. There is
something for everyone. Cash or checks only and all purchases must be
paid for that night. We will need some helpers the night of the auction:
come early to help set up (6:10), be a runner to distribute purchases, be a
Vanna to show the auction items, or help with checkin or checkout. Re-
member, bid early and bid often!
Part 5 of the Mystery Quilt has been posted on the MVQ website – under Projects
There will be some paper copies on the back table for those who do not have
access to a computer.
The Raffle quilt will be at MQX in Manchester April 10, 11 and 12
Would you please contact Betty Hastings if you are willing to work on the raffle table or white glove on any
of those days. A sign up sheet will be available at the February meeting.
Copies of the financial report for January will be available at the back table at the
February meeting.
Please take one. It will be on the blog for those who will not be at the meeting.

help sell ads for the program booklets. There is a letter for this purpose posted on our website. Forms must be returned by
3/31/14. Quilt submission forms will also be available on our website soon. The next Quilt Show meeting will be Mon. Jan. 20 th at
7 P.M. at the Plaistow Library. Committees’ members should be prepared to discuss their budgets.
Challenge Quilts: Carol Sullivan is seeking quilts that reflect the Show’s theme “Art of Quilting, Painting with Fabric and
Threads,” so she’s expecting lots of interesting embellishments. These quilts should be limited in size to a 120” perimeter.
Penny Raffle: Kathy Pearse is asking members to make up small themed baskets with notecards listing the contents, wrapped in
something see-thru; shrink wrap, clear film, tulle .., and submitted on “set-up Thursday” May 1st. Please make a copy of the in-
dex card for Kathy.
Kennebunk Retreats: The reservation form, for the March 26th – 30th retreat, is on the Blog. People will be accepted on a first
come, first served basis. The money is due by Jan. 31.
Program Committee: Sue Richards talked about the Spring speakers and workshops. Sign up soon, unfilled spaces for the work-
shops are being offered to non-members. [email protected]
Mystery Bus Trip: Bev asked, for the last time this year, for someone to lead this popular get-away. There were no immediate
volunteers.
Block Raffle: Ann Stobbs, Mary Stobbs; pay $1.00 for an approx. 12” sq. piece of the required fabric, make a 12.5” sq.
(unfinished) block using the theme “Make Me a Star.” Submit your block by the March meeting for a chance to win several
blocks made using that same fabric and theme.
President’s Blocks: Directions for the President’s Blocks continue to be available. Since Bev was President last year, she has cho-
sen to make Comfort Quilts from this year’s donated President’s blocks.
Extramural Activities: Several members have quilts hanging in the Georgetown, MA library courtesy of Betty Hastings. There
will be a reception there on Sat. Jan. 25th 10A.M. to 12 P.M. at which we will be selling Raffle Quilt tickets.
Bev and Marianne Karp will be giving a short presentation about our guild at the Tewksbury, MA library on Tues. Feb. 25th at 7
P.M. as part of the library’s “New Year, New Hobby” series.
Holiday Party: The income made by the member-vendors was shared with the Peoples’ Pantry in North Andover. Altogether,
this addition to our holiday festivities was a welcome choice. We have already received a thank you confirmation note for our
donation.
Nominating Committee: Bev asked for volunteers for this committee which must be appointed in March and present a slate of
nominees at the May General meeting.
Vendor: Bev introduced and thanked Carolyn Sprague, owner of The Victorian Cupboard. http://
www.thevictoriancupboardsewingstudio.com/Home.html
There was no additional New Business, and Show and Tell was great.
Our Speaker, Sue Richards, told us about ”My Crazy Journey;” her process when creating Crazy Quilts,
and showed us some beautiful slides of her work.

Hello Guild Members,
I am hoping that you will be able to help me out with our Penny Raffle at our Annual Quilt Show.
The Penny Raffle table will be having two door prizes during the show. On Friday, we will be raffling
off a container full of threads that you have donated for this raffle. On Saturday, we will be raffling off
a basket filled with donated fat quarters. We will have a third prize that will be placed with the other
raffle items that will include all types of quilting notions. ( needles, books, pins, scissors, buttons, em-
bellishments, etc.) These items can be brought to our monthly meetings starting with our next meeting.
I am looking for the donation of a nice large basket for the fat quarter raffle and
I am looking for a TWO nice large containers for the thread raffle and notions raffle. Please contact me,
as soon as possible, if you have a basket or container that you can donate for these raffles. (I am hoping
to not have to need to purchase these items due to the cost.) Also, if you have any empty baskets that
you are willing to for others to fill please bring them to our next guild meeting.
I will love getting donations of baskets that are already filled. Baskets can be assembled by individuals,
group of friends or sewing groups. They can have many different themes including gardening, cooking,
tea party, bird watching, golf, beach, travel, spa, children’s themes, gifts for men, mother’s day, father’s
day. If you make up a basket please wrap it with clear cellophane, netting or any other pretty see thru
protection. Please send me a list of what is in your basket and also write out a list that can be put in or
on your basket. Sometimes it is difficult to see what is in a basket.
In addition to baskets please feel free to donate any item that you feel people will take a chance on as a
stand alone item. ( for example: table runners, placemats and napkins, dolls, teddy bears, wall hanging,
seasonal door decorations, doll clothes, pocketbooks, hats, aprons, mother/daughter aprons, baby sweat-
er sets (knit or crochet). Anything special for Mother’s Day or Father’s Day.)
Please remember that the Penny Raffle is almost 100% profit for our guild. I will truly appreciate any-
thing that you donate for our Penny Raffle this year. When you know what you are planning to donate
please send me an email telling me what you are doing. I will then know what we are short on if others
call and ask what we need. Also, please send me a list of what you are donating when you have your
donation finished. Thank you so much for any help you can give me and my co -chair, Gail D’Arrigo.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
