Little Critter lives in Critterville with his Mom and Dad. He loves spending time with them and they love him. On this particular day, Mom and Litter Critter are going on a trip into the city. Before they do, Little Critter must feed the goldfish, brush his fur and pick up his toys. The two head into the museum in the city for a special Mommy and me day. After seeing the dinosaurs, they go to the aquarium. Next, they go to look at fancy art and then on to eat at a fancy restaurant. They finish up their day with a bit of shopping- more fun for Mom than Little Critter. After a busy day, they head home to rest.

The next morning Mom and Dad have a surprise for little Critter- he is going to be a big brother! He asks many questions about the baby. Finally he requests that he name the baby! Maybe Frankenstein or Fussy Von Poopypants he says. And with that, Mom and Dad decide they’ll name the baby girl. Mom tells him all of the nest things he can do with a baby sister, liking cuddling, reading stories and telling jokes. Little Critter grows more and more curious about what the baby will be like. His imagination runs wild- will she be stinkly and wrinkly? Will her diaper be droopy because it’s full of poopy? And what if Mom and Dad like her more than me? What if they give her all my things?

Some time later, Mom has the baby and Little Critter is eager to meet her. Mom warns Little Critter not to wake a sleepy baby, but he is just too excited to wait. When Mom leaves, he sneaks- not too quietly- up on the baby and she lets out a yell. Now that she’s awake, perhaps I can hold her, he says. He holds her and puts her back to sleep all by himself.

More time goes by and Little Sister can talk. Little Critter is trying to put her back to bed. Stories are what helps him go to bed. He makes up a story about a superhero named Super Critter. Sister loves the story and it puts her to sleep. When Mom discovers Little Critter out of her bed, she is pleasantly surprised.

Little Critter and his sister become really good friends. One day Little Critter is invited to the park with his friends and Mom tells him he must take his sister. Although he loves her, having her tag along is driving him crazy. He just wants to do some things on his own but Dad tells him that he must play with her because that is what big brothers do.

Little Sister is imagining all of the different things she can do when she grows up- be a ballerina, lead a parade, join the circus, and become a mountain climber. Little Critter wants to be a cowboy. While they are playing, Dad tells them they must go to bed. After much begging and pleading, the two finally go to sleep.

Later, Little Sister is upset because Mom and Dad won’t let her do anything. Little Critter tries to make her feel better by telling her he is Super Critter and will protect her. They head to the park together. Little Critter tells sister that he is happy that she joined their family. They hug.

Mom and Dad have one last surprise for the two kids- they’re going to have a little brother!

All About Mercer Mayer

Pre-Show questions 1. Little Critter loves spending time with his family. What kinds of things do you like to do with your family?

2. Little Critter dreams about being a superhero. When you are using your imagination, who do you pretend to be?

3. The play is based on the Little Critter books. What do you think will be different in the play than in the books? What might be the same?

4. Mom and Dad have a big surprise for Little Critter. What do you think it is?

“I began illustrating books in 1966. Since that time I have published over 300 books. Most of my books are about things that happened to me when I was a little kid. Now I'm a big kid and I write about things that happen now, especially with my own children. They always remind me of what it was like.

“I was born in Arkansas in 1943. Boy, that was a long time ago! It's real fun to be an old kid. Then my parents moved to Hawaii when I was thirteen years old. After High School, I went to Honolulu Academy of Arts. Then I moved to New York City. My wife, Gina, and I write the Little Critter stories together.”

WHAT IS COMMUNITY? Linking Us All TogetherA community is a group of people who live and/or work with one another. Your classroom is a community. And your town or neighborhood is a community.

1. Tell children you’re going to make a classroom decoration that celebrates our classroom community

2. Distribute a colorful paper strip to each child. Invite them to write their names on the strips.

3. Then work together to form all the individual strips into a paper chain.

4. Discuss how the chain is like your classroom community—every link (or person) plays an important role.

WHERE DO WE LIVE? Making School MapsGauge students’ geographical understanding of your community by creating a map of the school.

1. Start by asking students to list all the different places in the school – including the front office, gym, cafeteria, classrooms and playground.

2. Provide each student with a sheet of paper. On the board draw an example of their sheet of paper and begin by drawing and labeling one landmark of the school, such as the front entrance. Have students copy this onto their paper.

3. Then, allow students time to fill in the rest of their school map by drawing and labeling the other key landmarks. Help students identify key elements, including the hallways and doors.

4. Allow students to share their maps in small groups or with the entire class.

5. Finally, pull up your school using Google Earth. Show students the relationship between the “street,” or actual, view and where your school is located on a map. Zoom out to show your neighborhood or town and any places students identified on their maps.

WHO LIVES IN OUR COMMUNITY? Community Thank You'sAsk students about who lives in their neighborhood or town. What kinds of jobs do they have? Have kids tell about the jobs of people they know and how each role helps the community (e.g., doctors help sick people, police officers keep us safe, grocers sell us food).

1. Invite each student to choose one of the jobs listed to draw and write a thank you note for the people who do that job and for their hard work.

2. Once completed, research where to send the cards with students. Then address the envelopes and send them out in the mail.

WHAT GROWS HERE NATURALLY? Identifying the Plants and Animals of Our Community

Ask your students to identify trees and animals that they see in their neighborhood – perhaps on the school grounds, at the park, or in their backyards.

1. Place students in small groups and give each group word or picture cards into two categories: things that live or grow here and things that don’t. For Wisconsin, for example, you might include a palm tree, a maple tree, a polar bear, and a deer.

2. Talk about the piles kids make and the difference between things that occur naturally here and things that do not…and why they do not.

3. Next, go on a nature walk and take pictures of the plants and animals that you see. Add any new photos to your card game and invite students to play again.

HOW CAN WE HELP? Building Our Community Through ServiceRevisit your discussion of community helpers and ask students: How can kids help their community?

1. For inspiration, read a picture books about giving back, such as Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney and The Librarian of Basra by Jeanette Winter.

2. As a class, decide on a project to help your community, such as collecting canned food for a local shelter or teddy bears for a children’s hospital.

3. If children can’t accompany you to deliver goods that you’ve collected, document the trip and take pictures so that they can see directly how they made an impact.

WELCOMING A NEW BABY INTO YOUR FAMILYKids Health. Reviewed by: D'Arcy Lyness, PhD. © 1995-2016 The Nemours Foundation. http://kidshealth.org/kid/feeling/home_family/new_baby.html#

“If you're going to have a new brother or sister, you'll want to know some baby facts. Answer this question — a new baby is:

a. smelly

b. funny

c. annoying

d. great

e. all of the above

The answer is #5, of course!

“Babies are wonderful, but they can also wake you up at night. They dribble, spit, and make lots and lots of dirty diapers. They can't talk, walk, or go to the bathroom like you do! Because they need so much care, your mom and dad will be busy making sure the baby gets the rest, food, clean diapers, and love he or she needs. But just because your parents are busy with the baby doesn't mean they love you any less — they just love the baby too!

“It can be a lot of fun to have a new baby in the house, but it can be tiring, too. You might love the baby right from the start. But it's also OK if you miss the way things were before the baby came. If you feel left out or need some attention, tell your mom or dad. Also be sure to tell a parent if you're having trouble getting your homework done or you're not getting enough sleep.

BEFORE THE BABY ARRIVES“A baby takes 9 months to grow big enough to be born. Before the baby comes, ask your parents any questions that you have. Where will the baby sleep? Who will take care of you while everyone is at the hospital? Some hospitals offer classes for kids who are about to be big sisters or big brothers. These classes help kids learn about babies so they know what to expect.

“You also can learn about babies by getting books out of the library. But the best way is to spend time with a real, live baby. Maybe your mom or dad can arrange for you to visit a friend who has a young baby. Then you'll get to see how a baby looks, smells, and sounds!

WHO IS THIS LITTLE PERSON?“When it is time for the baby to be born, your mom will probably spend a few nights at the hospital. After the baby arrives, you can visit her in the maternity ward where the babies are delivered. There you can get your first look at the newest member of your family.

“Expect your brother or sister to be small, squirmy, and sleepy. When they're first born, babies are too little to play with toys or play peek-a-boo with you. They're just getting adjusted to the world. In time, your baby sister or brother will be able to smile at you, laugh, and play. But for now, babies mostly want to sleep, snuggle, and eat.

THE BABY COMES HOME“So what can you do at home with the baby? Early on, you can be a wonderful help to your mom and dad. If you're old enough, you may be able to hold or feed the baby. Your mom and dad can show you the right way to care for your brother or sister. You'll have to learn the rules for what you're allowed to do on your own and what you need to have another grown-up help you with. For instance, only grown-ups can give the baby a bath. But you might be able to do some important jobs, like put on the baby's little socks!

“Kids also can help in many other ways, like being a personal assistant to your mom or dad. What does a personal assistant do? You run all over the house getting the stuff your mom or dad needs for the baby. Diaper? You got it! Pacifier? You got it! Paper towel because the baby just spit up again? You got that, too!

“Kids also can fold baby clothes, answer the phone, or get their dear, sweet mothers a drink from the kitchen. That is so helpful, especially if she feels busy and tired. And if the baby is cranky, you can work your magic by smiling at the baby and trying to cheer him or her up.

“You could even read the baby a book. The baby won't know what you're talking about, but will like hearing the sound of your voice. Maybe the story will help the baby drift off to sleep. When that happens, everyone can relax a little. And it might be a good time to ask your mom or dad to spend a little time together — just the two of you.

“When a new baby joins the family, you're in for some changes. But so many of them are good ones. Not only do you have this cute little bundle around the house, before you know it, that little bundle will sit up, crawl, walk, run, and even play hide-and-seek with you. In other words, this baby just might grow up to be a lifetime pal!”

ACTIVITY1. Share with students that the class will be learning about different careers over the next few days. Ask them to share

what they want to be when they grow up. Discuss the various jobs that they know about, that their parents have, and the jobs of some of the people on the school campus. Record all responses on chart paper.

2. Read the book Career Day, by Anne Rockwell. Instruct students to take a close look at the illustrations and listen to the job descriptions outlined throughout the text.

3. Afterwards, have students recall the occupation they would like to pursue when they grow up. Allow students time to browse the provided print material about careers (books, magazines, etc.). You may wish to rotate the print material from table to table or row to row, depending on the set up of your classroom.

a. When finished, ask for a few volunteers to share which career they chose. You may need to assist some students in the decision.

4. Provide each student with a large, plain brown bag. Assist students to cut their bag into a wearable vest. a. Students may cut the brown paper bag where the teacher has marked with a sharpie. (Markings

should include 1. two rows up the front and top, to create an open vest look as well as an opening for the head, and 2. Circles drawn for arm holes.)

5. Inform students that today they will create their own Career Character Vest that displays the details of the job they have chosen to study. Explain to them that later in the week they will "become" that career person they studied as they give an oral report about the information they gathered while wearing their own poster on our Class Career Day!

a. The vest should include the Career name and any tools or characterizing tools that career uses to perform their job. The vest should also encompass the personality of that career. Show students how the craft materials can enhance the character's clothing, hair, etc. Encourage them to add as much detail as possible. You may want to ask students to bring a special prop from home that is representative of their career on the day of the oral report.

6. When the Career Character Vests are finished, have students write a first-person narrative about the career they studied. The narrative should answer the following questions:

a. What career did you select?b. Why did you select this particular career?c. What are some details about this career?

7. When their narratives are complete, they're ready for presenting at Class Career Day. Students should wear their vests, hold the prop, and read the narrative. Plan a question-and-answer session if desired.

POST-SHOW QUESTIONS 1. Little Critter had many feelings when Mom and Dad told him he was going to have a little sister. What emotions

did he feel? Can you show on your face what those feelings look like?

2. Little Sister wants to be many things when she grows up- a ballerina, a parade leader, and a lion tamer just to name a few. What do you want to be when you grow up?

3. Mom asks Little Critter to do chores before they leave for their special day. What kinds og things do you do to help out around the house?

WHO SAID IT? 1. A Critter walks into a bar and says, OWWW, I just walked into a bar. My head!

Someone get me an icepack!

2. So where is this baby? Do we have to pick it up?

3. Never. Ever. Wake a sleeping baby. Ever.

4. You my bubba.

ACTIVITY1. Discuss the concept of "feelings" by leading a discussion that invites children to reflect on their own feelings about

meeting new people and experiencing new environments. Use some of the questions below to prompt discussion:a. What are feelings? Can you name some feelings?b. Does everyone have feelings?c. Does everyone have the same feelings? Does everyone express them the same way?d. How do you feel when you meet someone new?e. How do you feel when you go to a new place and don’t know anyone?f. How do you feel when you go to a place where you know people and you know the place?

2. List all the feelings discussed on a large sheet of poster board or chart paper, leaving adequate space between the words for the "Class Collage" component of this activity.

3. Lead a discussion to help children gain an understanding of how their words and actions can promote certain feelings and/or actions.

4. While all feelings are acceptable, next help children understand that some actions are not acceptable. For example, name-calling, hitting, biting may be a result of feeling angry or hurt, but these actions do not help lead to a resolution of the original problem. Use some of the below questions to prompt discussion:

a. How do you feel when someone shares his or her toy with you? What might you do?b. How do you feel when someone will not share his or her toy with you? What might you do?c. How do you feel when someone says that he or she likes the block tower you just built? What might you do?d. How do you feel if someone knocks down the block tower you just built? What might you do?e. How do you feel if someone calls you a name? What might you do?

5. Add any feelings that had not been documented on the poster board.
