Our Young Adults group will be hosting Donut Sunday this Sunday, Feb. 11. Please join other young adults and the parish community as a whole after the 8 and 10 AM Masses in the Commons.
Ash WednesdayEvery year Ash Wednesday opens the beginning of Lent for Catholics. The ashes are made from the previous year’s palms that were blessed on Palm Sunday. The ashes are blessed with holy water and then are used as a symbol for us to begin a time of penance. They remind us each year of God’s mercy and grace. It’s a symbol to help us develop a true spirit of sacrifice and humility. This humble sign is to convey that our life is not about us but is about God’s purpose for our lives.
The other purpose in Lent is to follow Jesus’ forty days in the desert. We also enter this desert during our Lenten journey. While we are in this desert, we take away all of the daily distractions. We find strength in prayer and penance as we go through our journey.
This year we will have a Lenten Mission hosted by St. Cecilia Parish. Fr. Earl Fernandes will be speaking at our mission, Feb. 25-27. On the final night of the mission, we will have a penance service — The Light Is On for You — from 7-9PM. This will give everyone a chance to go to confession before Easter.
As we enter the Lenten season, start on Ash Wednesday to prepare for your journey with Jesus through the desert. Plan on attending a holy hour and penance service or going to confes-sion during the 40 days. To really take time to appreciate Holy Week at the end of Lent takes planning and determination. Start now. With Ash Wednesday.
Amen? Amen!

Those who have been married 25 years or more are invited to a special breakfast in the St. Cecilia Commons after the 10 AM Mass on Feb. 18. Please RSVP to Colleen Donovan at [email protected] if you will be attending the breakfast. If you can’t make the breakfast, take note that all Masses the weekend of February 17-18 will include a blessing for married couples.
We are now just a few days away from the beginning of Lent. To close out Ordinary Time, we will have a half-hour prayer
service this Tuesday, Feb. 13, at 6:30 p.m., just before the annual Mardi Gras Ice Cream Social.
This prayer service will include the solemn closing of the back altar doors, the addition of violet décor to the sanctuary and the singing of the last “Alleluia.” The prayers will conclude with the burning of last year’s palms. The ashes of the palms will be used for the Ash Wednesday Masses.
Every year before Ash Wednesday, we collect the palms from previous Palm Sunday services and then burn them as part of our closing of Ordinary Time. Please bring in your palms, and place them in the bins that are located at all the doors.
Beginning this Friday, and continuing on every Friday during Lent, we will pray the STATIONS OF THE CROSS at 9:30 AM and 7 PM in the church. Consider making this devotion part of your Lenten commitment to prayer and grow closer to Christ.

Credo (I Believe)How do we form our conscience properly?
How do we form our conscience to conform to God’s will? We use the Word of God handed on in Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition as interpreted by the Magisterium as “light for our path,” and we are assisted by the Holy Spirit. The Catechism re-minds us that this is a lifelong task. It begins in childhood with the teaching of virtue. A properly formed conscience prevents or cures fear, selfishness and pride, resentment arising from guilt, and feelings of complacency, born of human weakness and faults. The education of the conscience guarantees freedom and engenders peace of heart (CCC 1784). As St. Augustine says, “A good conscience is the place of Christ; the temple of the Holy Ghost; the paradise of delight; the standing Sabbath of the saints.”
A Gospel Reflection by Father Jason Williams
MARK 1:40-45
“The leprosy left him, and he was made clean.”
Leprosy is an awful disease. It is painful and disfiguring, but,
for the ancient Jews, it was also illegal for a leper to enter the
Temple or synagogue to worship. They were completely cut off
from the rest of the community. At the time there was not
much worse for a person.
What leprosy does to a human body, sin does to the
soul. Sin causes pain and it tarnishes the beauty of the soul
that was once adorned by grace. Sin affects our relationship
with God, and if our sin is very serious, we set ourselves
completely apart from the rest of the Church, greatly
distancing ourselves from God. Sin leaves us in a miserable
state — even small sins, because they add up, and little by
little lead to greater problems.
Sin is an unfortunate reality in our wounded world, yet sin
does not have the last word. God sent his Son to save us from
sin, and as Jesus told the leper in the Gospel, he wants to make
us clean. Our part is to call out to Jesus as the leper did, humbly
acknowledging our need for healing and confidently believing
that Jesus is the one who can restore us to life. Call out to him
today, “Lord Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me, a sinner.”

MEREDITH CRANEFavorite Bible Verse: “The Lord makes
firm the steps of the one who delights
in him; though he may stumble, he will
not fall, for the Lord upholds him with
his hand.” – Psalms 37:23-24
Favorite Saint: St. Philomena
Why Do You Want to Become Catholic: I wish to receive the sacrament of confirmation in
the Catholic Church because I wish to take the next steps in
solidifying and developing my faith in Christ.
NATE WILCOXFavorite Bible Verse: “Then I heard the voice of the Lord
saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ And I
said, ‘Here am I; send me!’”– Isaiah 6:8
Favorite Saint: St. Valerian, husband
of St. Cecilia
Why Do You Want to Become Catholic: After growing up in the
Methodist church, I was introduced to
Catholicism by my wife, Jessica. As I
learned more about the faith, I found it
to be a way to ground my life in
purpose, guidance, and tranquility. If we are blessed with
children, I want them to grow up in a family that values the
teachings of the Church and lives by them every day.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK: The students and St. Cecilia staff did an excellent job of preparing the school for Catholic Schools Week (photos 1-3). We had a very successful open house on Sunday and met many new families who are interested in attending our school. The students spent the week doing some fun activities to celebrate. They decorated the halls with Olympic themes. Some of our students and teachers went with me to the archdiocesan Catholic schools Mass at the cathedral. They carried the school banner proudly as they processed in before Mass. It was a very uplifting week after the tough loss we had last week. Please continue to pray for the St. Cecilia family after the loss of a wonderful teacher, Jessica Tillery. She was a big part of the preparations for this special week.
SANCTUARY FLOOR UPDATE: Steve Sullivan and David Oertel have finished removing the adhesive from the marble floor and dismantling (with the help of Jonathan Pearson) the wooden platform that extended into the nave (photos 4-8). Ken Jackson and Steve Bowman removed the platform at the top of the high altar steps (photo 9), uncovering even more beautiful marble. It was exciting to see the original floor in such good shape after so many years. If you have a chance, check out the new/old sanctuary floor. The restoration of the sanctuary floor is made possible by a most generous gift to the Restoration Fund for this purpose.
