Sunday, February 14. The Flap-Jack Feast is Tuesday, February 16 followed by our Ash Wednesday Service at 6:45 p.m. on February 17. Lent begins that day and we are looking to have 4 or 5 small groups to study together during the six weeks of Lent. We are entering the most sacred time of the Christian year. I hope that you can arrange your schedule to share with the church family in these days. God always has time for us, perhaps we can make some time to focus upon our faith and spiritual life in the coming 40-day Lenten season. See you on Sundays! Blessings!

~ Rev. Mark Frey

Have you noticed the little mouse on the ledge by the organ pipes in the Sanctuary? When the Epiphany art goes up (and isn’t it beautiful?), this mouse appears to celebrate the real mouse that came to the Epiphany Concert several years ago. I doubt that many of you know that we have mice in the Sanctuary throughout the year! Real live church mice!! OK, these are two-legged mice, but they are very real. Here’s what I’m talking about: Every week a volunteer goes by every pew to tend the pew racks by adding envelopes, sharpening pencils, cleaning out used bulletins, tissues and other assorted remains. They do it quietly and at different hours with no

fanfare. They offer great service to keep our worship space looking tidy and clean. I call this wonderful group of volunteers, our church mice! They look like: Joan Albrecht, Candy Boelter, Judy Meek, Ingrid Fuller and Joan Mockbee. I tip my hat to these dedicated women for this simple service that is accomplished with quiet care and expertise. If you would like to join them, contact Joan Albrecht at 330-836-8164. Mid-February is a busy time at Bath Church. Invite your friends to the Spaghetti Supper, Friday, February 12 in Fellowship Hall, then come to the Epiphany Concert at 3:00 p.m. on

Rev. Mark’s Remarks: YIKES, MICE!

Worship Schedule / Lent The Season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on February 17 and runs for 40 days, excluding Sundays. Lent is a season of personal reflection on our faith journeys. Some people give up things as a spiritual discipline. Others add

something, like special Bible readings, activities or prayer; and some do both. Lent ends with Easter.

“IHNSC IS IN A FINANCIAL CRISIS” - FEBRUARY UPDATE

Since we shared the news that IHNSC is in financial trouble we have received many inquiries and contributions.

We wish to sincerely thank everybody that has stepped up and made contributions to IHNSC. You can still send in checks directly to IHNSC. The congregation has donated an additional $225.00 to the Change Jar and this money has been sent to IHNSC. Bath Church has raised and sent IHNSC $3,379.00 since 11/09/09. Once again thank you for your heartfelt support of IHNSC.

All told, IHNSC as of 1/19/10 has raised $35,000.00 of the $65,000.00 goal. They have also received 2 pledges, one for $10,000.00 and one for $6,000.00, from 2 different IHNSC Congregations. These pledges are to be paid in 2010 and are substantial increases over the donations those 2 congregations made in 2009.

Everything is moving in the right direction, but we still need to raise more funds for IHNSC in 2010 to meet all their needs. Please participate in the 2010 Walk a Mile in My Shoes. You can either walk or make a donation.

“Walk a Mile in My Shoes” Charity Walkathon on February 28, 2010

The fifth annual “Walk a Mile in My Shoes” Charity Walkathon will be held on February 28, 2010. This fund raising event is more important than ever during the IHNSC Financial Crisis. The 2009 walkathon raised $7,587 for IHNSC. The Bath Church congregation was a major supporter of this event in 2009. We need to raise more money in 2010. All the funds raised by the walkathon go directly into the IHNSC Operating Budget. Please share an hour of your time to help raise much needed funds for IHNSC. Here is a chance to share a one-mile walk with others from the 30 IHNSC Churches who share this mission to help families secure housing during times of financial crisis. In 2009 alone, IHNSC reached out to help 21 families. Please help us kick-off a new year of supporting families in crisis. The Walk will take place at the park around Fairlawn West UCC Church, 2095 W. Market St., Akron, Ohio 44313. You can either walk or sponsor walkers. We need 15-20 walkers to represent Bath Church and as many more sponsors as possible. Family participation is encouraged. You can commit to walk or sponsor walkers by calling Dorothy Wiseman at 330-670-0540. Look for “Walk a Mile in My Shoes” Charity Walkathon posters, sign-up sheets, and event announcements in the Narthex.

Why an art show? Why in January/February? Here’s why:

The Bath Church Epiphany Arts Festival Statement of Purpose

The Christian Season of Epiphany opens with the light of the stable star and the gifts of the Magi.

The offering of our commitments and talents are manifestations of God’s light and thus they

become a major theme of these weeks. Epiphany occurs as nature begins to move from shorter and darker to longer and brighter days. It is in this special time that the church seeks

to celebrate the artists among us who offer their insights and talents to the world. Through the visual arts we hope to promote

a more profound sense of beauty and greater communication with our Creator, nature and each other.

In this way we expand our veneration of God’s creation, our self-understanding and our attention to the world.

Lenten Study:

Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on February 17. As part of the Lenten observance, the congregation will study the book, “Gospeled Lives: Encounters with Jesus” by John Indermark (Cost $10). This six-week study will include chapters entitled: Called, Challenged, Rejected, Transformed, Empowered, and Open-Ended – all looking at the people who encountered Jesus.

We hope to form 4 or 5 small groups to study this book together in Lent. So, we are seeking 4 or 5 in-dividuals, couples or groups to facilitate a group discussion during Lent (February 17 – April 4). If you are interested, contact one of the pastors.

Watch for groups and times!

A Personal Story

Sunday, January 10th, several lay people talked about their Christian faith and how it informed his or her daily walk with Christ. Chris Parker, Stephen Minister at Bath Church, gave his testimony about how he reached out to Stephen Ministry during a difficult time in his life. We would like to share a part of this heartwarming story with you. Chris began with, “Mark asked me right before they were leaving for the Holy Land; he actually left a voice mail at work - ‘Hey, we’re looking for two lay people at each service to give a testimony as to what the Christian faith means to them and how it has made a difference in their life. Can you do that?’ I said, O.K., sure, I can do that.” Chris continued, “What does faith mean to me? Faith to me means that when everything else appears to be gone, God’s there. It gives me perspective and it tells me what’s really important. It gives me direction, not advice, and lets me ‘be’ when I just need to ‘be’, knowing that He is there and no matter what, everything will be O.K. Psalm 46:10 - ‘Be still and know that I am God.’” Chris noted that he had been brought up in a Christian home with extended family surrounding him each Sunday as they attended church together. During college he left the church only to return with “a vengeance” after law school. He ended up at Bath church and dove right into serving in various ways. Then life took a turn. He continued, “Then in 2003 the wheels started to come off a little bit for me. I lost my stepfather to Lou Gehrig’s dis-ease. I lost both of my grandfathers in the same year and in 2005, I got divorced and lost my job. If there ever was an ‘aha’ moment, a surrender moment, it was then. Thank God for Stephen Ministry. Thank God that people had the ability to come to me and say, ‘Hey, you need help. We see you in church, know that you’re there but we also know that you’re hurting.’ As I testified about two months ago, I had to be ready and I was, finally. All I can say is thank God for Stephen Ministry because as a care receiver, I surrendered myself to my faith and through that program, and through the support system of that program, I have become a much better person, a much better friend, a much better father and a much better Christian.” Stephen Ministry is ready to support you if you are wrestling with life’s inevitable ups and downs. Could you use a Stephen Minister? Make the call - our Stephen Ministers are ready to answer.

The Mission Board would like to share a letter of thanks they received:

To the Bath Church United Church of Christ, This morning our Confirmation class learned about your ministry with Open M as detailed in the Calendar of Prayer. As we continue to grow in our faith, it is exciting to learn how other churches are innovative in responding to Christ’s message of social justice and compassion. We remembered you in our morning prayer together. May the peace of Christ be with you. Sincerely, Daniel E. Mission Board Report:

Health Ministry: The Joyful Health Note

ATTENTION LADIES and all those who love them:

There’s a life-saving opportunity on Sunday, March 7 at 10:10 a.m. in the Community Room!!!

The Red Dress pin you see above is to warn women of their #1 health threat: Heart Disease. The Heart Truth created and introduced the Red Dress as the national symbol for women and heart disease awareness in 2002 to deliver an urgent wakeup call to American women. The Red Dress reminds women of the need to protect their heart health, and be proactive in learning how you can do that.

Please join us on Sunday, March 7 between services at 10:10 a.m. in the Community Room where, thanks to Meg Matejkovic, our speaker Mitzi Horn will facilitate a “Go Red for Women Educational Session”. Please do not miss this opportunity; for the life you save through education and awareness may be “your own or one of somebody you love”.

Heart Health Tips from anonymous others: “I know we women have a busy lives; always taking care of others. Never forget to take care of yourself. If you are not in top health, you can’t take care of the rest”. “I had a heart attack on January 6, 2004 so I am getting this for my own 5-year anniversary. My heart attack made me very much aware of my life and health. I gave up smoking and drinking (because of the meds) and am just happy to be here today”. “It was not going to happen to me, I was sure of that. I thought I led a healthy lifestyle. If you feel the same as I did, please join the bandwagon to educate others on heart disease. One never really knows…. as I found out”. Hope to see you on March 7th! Please call with any questions. The church’s 2009 fiscal year ended on a positive note with a General Fund surplus of $16,423. The Finance Board greatly appreciates the strong support provided by the congregation the past few months. We should be pleased to have reversed an April deficit of $42,000 into a yearend surplus. On January 10 at a special congregational meeting, the 2010 General Fund budget of $670,000 was approved. This budget is funded by pledges of $572,000 and an estimated $98,000 of non-pledged income. You can see details of our finances and the 2010 budget at the church’s website under the Stewardship tab at www.bathucc.org. The chart below shows that payroll costs are by far our largest expense.

The church Building Fund also had a good year in 2009. We received contributions and other income totaling $251,142. Expenditures were $353,808 which included $167,712 in Fellowship Hall renovation costs. Our out-standing loan was reduced from $1,082,204 to $897,201. We have sufficient cash on hand plus outstanding pledges to cover our needs for the next 2-3 years. We will be exploring long-term financing during the first half of 2010.

You are welcome to contact me with any questions. ~ Gerry Flinn, Treasurer 330-666-5146 or [email protected]

Thank you to the folks who cheerfully and faithfully prepare and serve the Wonderful Wednesdays suppers. The meals are simple but tasty and varied. It’s such a pleasure to look for-ward to this midweek chance to gather with family and friends and take a break from the responsibilities of home, school and work.

Thank you! Arne and Betsy Hosbach

Dear Friends of H.M. Life Opportunities (supported by our Giving Tree program): H.M. Life Opportunity Services is very grateful for your generous donation of Christmas gifts for the families in our program. These gifts, received December 15, 2009, will greatly impact the lives of the parents and children cur-rently participating in the HMLOS transitional housing program. It is through the kindness of people such as yourself that HMLOS can offer homeless, single-parent families the opportunities to become economically self-supportive. In the past twenty years, this program has served over 365 fami-lies. On behalf of the parents and children that we serve, I’d like to thank you for your generosity and support of our work with homeless families. To break this cycle of homelessness and poverty, we offer programs to address their need for increased education, life skills, affordable housing and childcare. Your donation helps to ensure that these parents and their children have the opportunities needed to lead successful and independent lives. With your help we were able to provide a wonderful Christmas for many deserving families. Please know that you help make their dreams possible. Sincerely, Melissa Massey-Flinn, Program Director

Once again, Bath Church members have reached out to comfort me during my last operation. Prayers, get- well cards, many visitors, medical equipment, warm bread, and soup all lifted my spirits and I am grateful for your Christianity. Paul Simmons

The light continues to shine brightly at Bath Church! On a very cold and blustery day, Mary Jo arrived at our door with a delicious loaf of bread and vegetable soup. Marilyn and I could not wait for mealtime, we had to sample (a big sample) it right away. I think it was responsible for chasing away the last of my infection. Many thanks to the Breadwinners for their thoughtfulness. Jerry Woodling

Dear Breadwinners, Your warm bread and the soup that Susan B. dropped off just “hit the spot”. It was so good and makes wonderful toast, too. Thank you, Ann Winland

Your generosity put smiles on the faces of some very precious chil-dren in my life and added a hand to regain needed household items. Thanks so much, Patricia B. (Giving Tree recipient)
