On Jan. 20, men decked out in blue, burgundy, black, and orange packed into the Ruben Arena to compete against each other in the 2011 Sailfish Cup.

Gabe Speiller, a resident assistant for Rinker Hall, sensed that there may be a little more competition in the air than last year.

But, this competition didn’t rattle the confidence of the guys from Rinker.

After finishing first during the Cup’s opening day with a snake charmer-themed Parade of Banners and a

personality-fueled dance-off, Rinker continued to hold tight to first place throughout the weekend.

At the closing ceremonies, the Rat-tlers surprised the audience with a first place finish for their “Mulan” lip synch, an event that sealed their victory.

“I feel that the best part of Sailfish Cup was seeing guys who aren’t as ac-tive in Residence Life come out and participate,” Jeff Ard, resident assis-tant for Rinker, said. “It’s good for the community.”

Jon Will,, agreed with Ard. “It was good for bringing all types of guys to-gether. We were all after the same goal,” he said.

For the first time since its founding, the Sailfish Cup welcomed the Women in Black, the ladies from Oceanview, to its winners circle.

“I think we deserved it,” Rebecca Wendt, junior graphic design major, said. “We came in as a unified team and stuck together.”

The ladies started Sailfish Cup 2011 with a “Men in Black” inspired Parade of Banners.

They then went on to win first place in the dance-off, blending ballet and hip-hop dance in a routine reminiscent of the first “Step Up” movie.

After great showings in flag football, Super Smash Brothers and Scrabble, the Women in Black took the stage for a PBA version of Mario Kart.

“Sailfish Cup is always such an amaz-ing experience and I was so very excited to be the captain of the history making team,” said Tai Cornell, sophomore jour-nalism major. “My girls worked so hard and I am so proud.”
