henever I walk through the new Klyde Warren Park, I am in awe of all the exciting additions to our city and marvel that our downtown has truly become

such a vibrant neighborhood. This trend began in recent years in Uptown, has spread to the Arts District, is now expanding to new developments in Deep Ellum, the Central Business District, the west side of the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge in Trinity Groves and northern Oak Cliff, and now is exploding south of Lamar Street. What a major addition the extension of the trolley line will be when it connects to the Dart Rail and passengers will zoom all the way to the DFW Airport from the center of our city.

Dallas has always been a city of vision and solutions for the benefit of all. Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty has recently been chosen to represent one of the outstanding new additions to the world-class Arts District—the Museum Tower luxury residences. Knowing the controversy that the building has undergone with its neighbors, because of the reflectivity of the building’s glass, many have asked why I am excited and feel honored to market this building. My answer is always the same; Museum Tower is one of the finest luxury residential towers in the United States. I believe the building’s owner and development team are working diligently to find a solution that will be acceptable to its neighbors, while keeping the integrity and beauty of this extraordinary property. We recently launched our marketing efforts with two magical nights of preview, music and entertainment for hundreds of guests, and, without exception, everyone is in awe. The current residents are singing the praises of living the life we have long been dreaming of in Dallas, a life where one can walk out the front door to the world of culture, art, performance, dining and entertainment. I want to see the Arts District succeed beyond our dreams, and sometimes achieving greatness is not easy. There are challenges, but Dallas has the spirit and reputation of working together, and I am convinced that this too will be resolved. I want to be part of the solution going forward.

We often receive phone calls from Mexico, Europe and Asia, and we are always pleased to introduce our many great neighborhoods to the world. Now you can use your mobile device to connect to these neighborhoods through our enhanced site, briggsfreeman.com, and enjoy this calendar showing fun spring events that will bring Metroplex communities together to celebrate all that is great in our city.

Exploring neighborhoods in North Texas brings you to a community that is pushing the definition of luxury into a new

realm of health and fitness.

When developer David Craig envisioned Craig Ranch, in McKinney, more than a decade ago, he knew it needed

to include a top-rated golf course with the highest-quality luxury homes overlooking the fairways and creek. Craig also wanted the people who lived in the

homes at 17 Green and The Estates to have access to something new – community-based support for leading

an active, healthy lifestyle.

The homes at 17 Green and the lots at The Estates are built around the TPC Craig Ranch golf course, the on-site,

state-of-the-art Cooper Fitness Center & Spa, trails for running and cycling, as well as unique facilities for triathlete training and popular playing fields. Luxury homeowners receive access and memberships to both the golf course and the fitness center. Huntington Homes is the most recent luxury builder to sign on at The Estates, offering one-story luxury homes with oversized master suites, open bar areas and other high-end details.

The golf course is what first attracted resident Randy Hullett to the community, but the Cooper Fitness Center has become central to his daily life.

“Both my wife and I exercise daily,” said Hullett, an attorney who moved to Craig Ranch in 2007. “A big amenity is to be able to walk out my front door and walk to the Cooper facility in five minutes.”

I recently relocated to this area. My wife and I knew wewanted something that made living a healthy lifestyle easy –

close to the airport, with a fitness center, walking and biking trails, and a golf course within walking distance of our new home.

This is a neighborhood focused on health and wellness.Randy – Current Resident

Dallas-based Playtri has announced it will open what it calls the largest triathlon store in the world in Craig Ranch, providing equipment and training for triathletes at every level. The community has four mini-triathlons scheduled for 2013 and held its first mud run in 2012.

Residents can test their athletic skills at the ice rink at the Dr Pepper Star Center; The Beach volleyball facility; the Michael Johnson Performance Center, which is a training venue for multiple sports; and dozens of recreational fields and parks.

The Cooper Fitness Center has grown to close to 4,000 members since it opened six years ago. “The club’s variety of programs have all been designed through the works of the Cooper Clinic, with its science and research behind what we do,” said Roger Sargent, general manager of the Cooper Fitness Center at Craig Ranch.

That focused service at the fitness center, combined with all of the other amenities surrounding 17 Green and The Estates, make this community unique in its mission to meld luxury and healthy lifestyle.

“My experience with communities like this is that they offer multiple opportunities to find the lifestyle you want,” said Christy Berry, the Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty agent representing 17 Green and The Estates. “Whether you have an active family, want to be near your grandchildren, need a home you can lock and leave, or are attracted to the proximity to Dallas and the airport, there are many options to explore.”

hat does it take to become the next great chef? “You can choose it, or it can choose you,” said local restaurateur Tre Wilcox. “You may begin to make a living…as the passion grows, next thing you know it’s your career.” Still others believe it is a calling, and that the best chefs are born, not made. That may be the case with Tiffany Derry, one of Dallas cuisine’s superstars.

Following a series of ultra-hyped appearances on Bravo’s “Top Chef,” the spotlight on the 31-year old chef intensified. Derry was enjoying stellar reviews at Private | Social, a popular Uptown spot that opened in 2011. She left in January on good terms, she said, to focus on new projects. “There were no hard feelings,” said Derry. “I cherished my time there…and wish nothing but the best for them. I hope we cross paths again in the future.” So has life slowed down since she’s out of that kitchen? “Definitely not,” said Derry.

What’s next for the chef with the sizzling smile? Since her television appearances, Derry has fielded many offers. “I have quite a few things in the works right now, but nothing set in stone,” she said.

Her culinary career started when she was 15, at an IHOP in Beaumont. “If anyone did something particularly well, I watched, I studied and I conquered,” she said. Her first job out of school

was at Pesce, an elegant Houston seafood restaurant, where her mentor was chef Mark Holley. “He was the first African American chef I saw doing fine dining,” said Derry.

“She had it all mapped out…wanted to open a restaurant in her hometown, and be on The Food Network,” said Holley. “You know the great ones early on. One in a hundred…maybe a thousand…really has it. I am not at all surprised by her success.”

She moved to Dallas in 2000. While working as chef at Go Fish in 2010, Derry auditioned for “Top Chef.” She placed fifth, and was voted fan favorite. She calls the experience “a game changer.” Is an appearance on a reality show life altering? In Derry’s case, it appears so. She went on to compete on “Top Chef All-Stars,” making it to the final four and embracing the industry spotlight.

Last year, Derry said she really wanted to do “something in television” on a national scale. Does that mean more chef competitions or her own show? “There are a few things in the works in regards to TV,” she said rather slyly. “You will know as soon as I do! Nothing with ‘Top Chef,’ but I would love to do something with traveling and experiencing new cuisines and cultures.”

She is also working with DISD to create healthier school lunches. “I am just so amazed with all the things they do in school cafeterias with the minimal budgets they have,” she said. She believes it will be a long process, and hopes to recruit other chefs to help.

Is there a new Dallas restaurant in her future? “I do love openings and all the craziness and excitement that goes into them,” Derry said. “I love Dallas and intend on staying here…it’s no secret that if the opportunity presented itself, I would love to open something in Beaumont. It’s my hometown.”

So are chefs born and not made? “I really believe they are born,” said Holley. “Passion, hand-eye coordination, mobility…and common sense…either you have it or you don’t.”

Derry is philosophical. “The true gift I hope to give to people is my voice,” she said. “When I get a chance to speak at events or talk to aspiring chefs, a lot of times it’s a story. One way to reach them is through the food, but it gives me an opportunity to talk about something greater.” By Dave Muscari
