FROM THE ROMANS AND MOORS TO WOODY ALLEN AND TODAY’S GLOBETROTTER, THE WORLD JUST CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF BARCELONA, AND IT’S EASY TO SEE WHY.

With a glittering Mediterranean Sea

coastal locale, stunning architectural

masterpieces and museums, eye-popping

hotels, and culinary pyrotechnics, this

city dazzles from top to toe. Uptown is

home to modern and neat Eixample,

hip Gràcia, and the hills of Tibidabo,

while situated downtown in the winding

lanes of the old city are ambient Barri

Gòtic, bustling El Born, cool El Raval and

seaside Barceloneta. With year-round

sun, there is never a bad time to visit.

So what are you waiting for – andale!

• Balmy, perfect autumn and spring,

winter is crisp, and the sun shines

year round, but avoid August, the

place shuts down, the locals flee and

the world descends.

• El Prat airport – city centre costs

approximately 30 euros and takes

30 minutes.

• Catalán is the language of choice

in Barcelona, but everyone speaks

Spanish, though less so English.

• The best way to explore the old

city is on foot or by bicycle (see

LUXE Culture Itin.). Beyond that,

the metro and bus are efficient, and

taxis are affordable and plentiful.

• Save time and money, get a T-10

card at the metro station.

• Shop hours are approximately 10am-

1.30pm and 4.30-7.30pm Mon-Fri,

and Sat morning, give or take an

hour. Even restaurants shut on Sun,

so head to the beach, park,

museum or bar.

Blah blah• Avoid La Rambla like you would a

date with Franco. He’s gone? It’s a

shame the ugly hordes here haven’t.

• Don’t confuse the divinely florid,

art nouveau folly of modernisme

/ modernista architecture with

the later, rational and functional

modernist style.

• It’s all in the details, so look closely

at everything from doors and knobs,

to balconies and lamp posts.

• At most bars, order at the counter,

pay when you leave.

• Don’t ask for cerveza, ask for caña.

Avoid sangria with your meal and

sip regional wines or cava instead.

• Tipping is not required, though

leaving a few euros is nice.

• Reservations are essential

at most restaurants.

• If paying by credit card, have

photo ID handy.

• Beware of pickpockets and watch

your bags, especially in a crowd; the

rogues aren’t dangerous, just fast.

• Football is a religion and FC

Barcelona the god.

• International code for Spain is +34;

local calls have a 93 prefix, which

must be dialed. Most mobiles

begin with 6.

• In emergencies, call 112

or police 088.

Born and raised in Barcelona, Albert

Raurich spent 15 years at iconic

restaurant elBulli, ultimately becoming

chef de cuisine. He was part of the

intimate group of four involved in the

evolution of the restaurant, developing

new recipes, leading the creativity

behind elBulli Taller and assisting in

the publication of books among other

ventures. With an increased interest

in Asian cuisine, Albert, along with his

partners, opened the first dim sum tapas

bar in Barcelona, Dos Palillos, in 2008.

1) WHAT’S THE ONE THING EVERY VISITOR TO BARCELONA MUST DO AND WHY?

Each visitor should visit all the

modernist works including the Sagrada

Família, Parc Güell, Palau de la Música

Catalána, Casa Battló and La Pedrera –

especially Gaudi’s works. Why? Because

they are the legacy of Catalán cultural

expression. (see LUXE Loves and LUXE

Culture Itin. for all)

2) WHERE DO YOU RECOMMEND FRIENDS STAY WHEN IN BARCELONA?

Without a doubt, Hotel Casa Camper

just next door to Dos Palillos. It is a new

concept of hotel – casual, comfortable,

centrally situated but quiet, very

pleasant and

without attitude.

www.casacamper.com

3) WHERE WOULD YOU GO FOR A DATE NIGHT OUT AND WHY?

Luz de Gas by Fede Sarda. You can’t

tell whether it’s a concert hall or a

club or a bar, but rest assured you will

enjoy its great atmosphere

and its people.

www.luzdegas.com

4) WHAT ARE 3 OF YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS IN BARCELONA AND WHY? WHAT DISHES DO YOU ORDER AT THESE PLACES?

The first is without a doubt the new

restaurant of the Adrià brothers,

Tickets Bar. Albert Adrià describes it

as the elBulli of the street. Secondly,

the best informal tapas in Barcelona is

at Lolita Tapería by Juanito Martinez.

Thirdly, Ca L’Isidre for authentic

Catalán gastronomy made from

unbelievable raw materials. Tickets

Bar (see LUXE Loves).

www.lolitataperia.com

www.calisidre.com

5) WHERE WOULD YOU GO FOR A COCKTAIL AND WHAT WOULD YOU ORDER?

I like Boadas in the ramblas, a

legendary place from 1933 where

you can enjoy a fantastic mojito. The

mythical and elegant Dry Martini,

open since 1972 and the place to go

for a good martini. And 41° by Ferran

and Albert Adrià for modern cocktails.

I recently had one consisting of

smoked gin tonic with red sisho. Wow!

With its year-round sun, grand historical

Romance

Gaudí’s spectacular Parc Güell (see LUXE

mosaics, art and shrubbery while savoring

your deli-ghts. After a stroll through Casa

Museu Gaudí (see LUXE Loves), pop back

in the car and carry on up into the hills of

Tibidabo, where you’ll find the splendid

Grand Hotel La Florida and its luxurious

Zen Zone Spa (see LUXE Loves) perched

high atop the city. Couples can indulge

in Greek Gods therapies, combining

purification, relaxation and energizing

facial and body rituals, then stay on to

enjoy a swim in the steel indoor/outdoor

pool with panoramic views. Wend your

way back down the hillside, stopping at

C.19th villa El Mirador de la Venta for

supper, but first sip sundowners at Bar

Merbeyé next door. You’ll need to have

booked well in advance to secure one

of the villa’s only seven prized tables,

but your forethought will be rewarded

with staggering city views and robust

modern Catalán fare. Head towards home,

stopping for a nightcap rendezvous in

Neri’s Lounge Bar, before retiring

to your suite.

Barcelona is without question numero

uno in the Spanish style stakes, with

unique fashion, fabulous art, top-notch

dining and a happening party scene all

working in its favor. For the most stylish

of stays, you can’t look past harbor-side

stunner Hotel Arts (see LUXE Loves),

with its jaw-dropping vistas and jet-set

magnetism, and given its Barceloneta

location, it would be downright rude not

to start your day with a lap along the see-

and-be-seen boardwalk. Strut south along

Passeig Marítim, then turn down Passeig

Jaon de Borbó and finally cross over into

El Born for a sweet stop at sinfully good

patisserie Bubó. You are now in the heart

of retail-land, just meters from Natalie

Capell’s (see LUXE Loves) boutique, and

ever so close to chic enamel jewelry

LUXE ITINERARY

Brunells, so make the most of your time

there. Luckily, it’s never too early for

a spot of pampering, because low-lit

exotic bath and massage house Aire de

Barcelona is just a block and half away,

and the perfect spot for some mid-shop

rejuvenation. By now you’ll be famished,

so pull up a stool at Cal Pep, where even

the crowds and queues can’t detract from

the superb seafood tapas, then taxi north

to continue the shop-a-thon in Eixample.

Stop first at Santa Eulalia for the best

men’s tailoring in town, plus a stash of

the hottest runway labels for men and

women, then push on to gent’s outfitters

The Outpost (see LUXE Loves) and

Norman Jose Vilalta, where meticulously

hand-stitched shoes can be yours via

appointment only. You’ve earned a drink,

so pitstop at Dry Martini (see LUXE Loves)

and dancing at nearby late-nighter

Culture

Romantic history, stunning art and

architecture, excellent shopping, delicious

dining and palate-pleasing wine –

Barcelona has it all, plus beaches. Begin

by checking into Praktik Rambla, offering

chic and central boutique accommodation

in an exquisitely restored C.19th building.

Since there’s so much to see and do, we

recommend speeding things up on a Bike

Rental Barcelona bicycle, for which you’ve

of course pre-arranged hotel drop-off.

First stop, bustling Mercat de la Boquería,

where hearty home-style tapas is served

at Bar Pinotxo (see LUXE Loves) from

as early as 6am. Post-breakfast, ride on

through the old city to Barri Gòtic, where

you will find the ultimate traditional

Spanish accessory – hand-woven and

finished-to-order espadrilles – at La

Manual Alpargatera. The surrounding

area is home to just some of Barcelona’s

fantastic museums, so while you’re

close, be sure to visit Museu Frederic

Marès, a blissfully crowd-free cache

of medieval and religious sculptures,

then amazing Museu Picasso. You are

not far from Barceloneta, so cycle on

for lunch at Cheriff, where you should

ignore the kitsch décor and tourists, and

simply savor the delectable rendition of

traditional Spanish paella. If you’re feeling

weary, stop for a quick spa treatment at

nearby Bliss, or ride north to begin your

afternoon of Gaudí appreciation. The

astounding edifice of Sagrada Família is

often packed with visitors, so if you’re

loathe to fight the crowds, view it instead

from the patio of Copa Café with an

afternoon coffee and slice of cake in

hand. Cycle back to Praktik via Eixample’s

‘Block of Discord’, the site of more Gaudí-

designed buildings, including La Pedrera

and Casa Batlló. After a quick costume

change, head around the corner for

some pre-dinner regional wine sampling

at futuristic bar Mon Vinic, then on to

your pre-booked (well ahead) table at

molecular tapas hotspot Tickets Bar
