PITCHER & PIANO

For a long time, the people of Birmingham have desired a sophisticated bar, where they can relax and have a chilled night out and The Pitcher and Piano fits the bill perfectly.

Situated on the water’s edge of the award winning business and leisure destination Brindley Place, the bar prides itself on producing a relaxed and entertaining environment for

people to enjoy.

From the moment you walk into the bar you can feel the smooth vibe around the surroundings as a mixture of swing and jazz music fill the ears with a calm tone. Combining this with the colour scheme of cream, teal and red, and you really start to feel the nostalgic effect of the bar. The interior inside is extremely interesting as it’s a cross between modern and contemporary art.The downstairs area is a perfect example of this as there is modern wall art covering

half of the surface, with the phrase ‘P & P’ in bold and vibrant colours, striking out across the room. Next to this lies an old fashioned fire place over-looked by an eye catching crystal chandelier hanging from the roof. The works of art also follow on with this theme, as there are a mixture of unique created letter forms, combined with classical Victorian designed paintings in the corner of the room, meaning one can really try and get connected with what the bar has to offer.

Upstairs the main focus of the room is the bar, as it’s spread across the far wall offering a varied amount of alcoholic beverages such as spirits, wines and much more. Once again there’s a prominent influence of an old vs new twist, as the bar is overlooked by modern and contemporary lighting which as a whole really does bring a cosy atmosphere to the surroundings. On the same floor there is a larger seating area available with a mixture of tables and stools, chairs and leather seats available to relax in. The leather seats are accompanied by modern

electrical fireplaces, allowing you to really make yourself at home. Outside, next to the water’s edge the exterior is very natural, with wooden seating and tables spotted in between many plants and trees. Neutral colours such as green and brown are very frequent around the decking, and this adds a sense of calmness and maturity to the outdoor surroundings. All in all The Pitcher and Piano bar is a sharp, mature bar, which will allow you to unwind after a hard day, and will give you everything that is required to have a calm and enjoyable evening.

Luxe is a limited edition magazine containing a select amount of valuable information that aims to engage many viewers and hopefully alert the public of what’s out

there and what should be established, in terms of nightlife, food, art and fashion. This section of the magazine focuses purely on fashion. As well as informing you with facts, we want to expose the work of talented fashion designers and their brands so that you are aware of distinctive inventions and admirable designs. Alternatively, these few pages of the magazine will show you an inside to a fantastic brand and its lavishness designs. The term ‘high fashion’ is typically used as a way of describing fashions that are trend-setting, unique, and exclusive. High fashion products are defined in part by their quality materi-als and high cost. However, people often think that the more expensive the clothes are the better the brand and quality will be. This is not true. Brand name products are usually over-priced. The price isn't always reflected by the quality of the product but simply the name. Whether you care about fashion or not, the clothes you wear, reflects your personality to a certain extent. For many people fashion is an integral part of their life and identity. Some peo-ple live and breathe for fashion whereas others couldn’t care less. Getting into the hostile world of high fashion is a great accomplishment for those that are passionate about it as the industry is undying and it gets bigger by the minute. When it comes to fashion, everyone’s a critic. ‘High-fashion’ means taking things to the next level, going over-the-edge and seeing designs in an unusual or unique way that would actually gain signature. Jaeger was the distinctive brand chosen to be advertised for this magazine. Being unique is a challenge in itself. However Jaeger accomplishes it by having an eccentric clothing range, a diverse price range and consuming a distinguishing theme running throughout the store. What really makes Jaeger stand out from other brands is the high quality used to create the garments. They will use noth-ing less than luxurious fabrics to create such refined clothing. Attention to detail is definitely important to them. The design-er aims to enrapture buyers. The store embodies a classic modern look. The clothes are clean cut, sophisticated and glamorous. Jaeger opened its first West End retail store at 3-4 Princess Street in London and continued launching their products throughout the globe. However Jaeger is a United Kingdom based high-end fashion brand and retailer of menswear and womenswear. The brand has always been associated with smart classic clothing but by the end of the 1990’s the company felt that the buyers were losing interest as it was portraying an old-fashioned im-age. This is when they decided to introduce a larger variety of designs into the brand. The photos portraying these garments can be found on the next couple of pages. A mixture of class and grace best express the brands futuris-tic clothing range.

THEY SELL EVERYTHING EXCEPT FRIDGES?

Here at LUXE we’ve been looking at the best shops around the city of Birmingham for our readers to get the best quality and variety of food there is to offer. There’s clearly only one place

for it - Selfridges & Co

There is no doubt about it that in any city you can buy food anywhere and everywhere, and Birmingham is no exception. However here at Luxe we

are all about exploring the finer things in life which means, for us, the local supermarket just isn’t going to cut it.

To many poeple Selfridges & Co is just a department store that sells all the usual things that all department stores sell. But to others it is simply known as “heaven” and the food court is every bit a part of this heaven they have created. All of the different sections have something exquisite to offer the shopper, from cupakes to pastries, indian cuisine to jams and olives and every other kind of food you can think of - Selfridges has always it. One of the most popular sections has got to be where many of us go and end up heading back to our childhoods and can only be summed up with one word... sweets! Not only is this section ful of scrumptious treats, it

has a very distinctive model of the distinctive Birmingham Bull made of beautiful jelly beans. Surprisingly no one has tried to eat it yet. It is also no surprise that the wine shop is also one of the busiest section with its fine selection of champagne which includes all the famous brands such as Moet & Chandon and Veuve-Clicquot - at times such as Christmas and the party season bottles encrusted with Swarovski Crystals will be flying off the shelves. No one here is afraid to show off their hard earned cash. Then when everyone has covered every square inch that Selfridges has to offer and fatigue has kicked in the only thing to do is indluge in the food provided by the many restaurants the food court has to offer. It is simply impossible to choose from the selection of restaurants and cafes available. Walking around is like taking a trip around the world in one day. For us here at Lucxe we believe that there is no better place for food that the “heaven” we know as selfridges & co.

Set in the heart of Brindley Place, one of the most prestig-ious, lively and cosmopolitian

hang outs in Birmingham, is Bank restaurant. With a handful of awards to its name and a full reservation book every weekend its clear to see that this res-taurant is much loved by the locals in the city and by the peo-ple that travel from round the country to come and visit it. Ask anyone around the city and they will tell you about the buzzing atmosphere and the mix of vibrant personalities that all join together to enjoy the impecca-ble service and menu that is on offer.

The decor of the restaurant is one of the main attractions. From the moment people walk through the large revolving doors they are hit by the bustling noise of the crowd of young independent professionals sipping on cocktails in the electrify-ing setting and enticing aromas. The dining area has a very intimate feel to it, where tables are spaced close together yet far enough apart so that conversations are still kept private in the relaxed and informal area. There is no doubt that Bank restau-rant employs people with a great knowledge of wine. You can tell this simply from looking at the elegant wine racks that adorn the back wall, full to the brim with bottles from all over the world. Interspersed with the wine racks are the views of the chefs working hard in action in the open kitchen - which is nice as you can see the professionalism of them and how hard they work to create such brilliant dishes. Another great aspect

of the lively brasserie is the beautiful 19th century canals that the front of the building looks over. They give the place a mature and aged feel as well as it being extremely modern, and they add to the superb views of the

alfresco terrace areas which on a hazy summers

evening make the perfect

setting for lounging in the sun with

a cooling cocktail and

a delicious meal.

By taking inspiration for the menu from around the globe, Bank man-ages to have eclectic dishes to suit every palate of people around the country consisting of only the finest and freshest ingredient. The menu varies from the usual steak and burg-ers to a more acquired taste of mus-cles, lobster, thai green curry and the classic French dish of “boeuf bour-guignon” and even a Greek mezze dish for sharing… the restaurant really does have different tastes from all over the world. The cocktail list is also something that attracts many people to Bank. The classic Mojito’s, Bellini’s and Martini’s all take pride place on the menu, however for peo-ple who find that they are bored of these drinks Bank has much more to offer including the extremely popular long drinks “Lemonvilla” and “Tequiz-zle”. Whatever you are looking for in a restaurant and bar, may it be a for a romantic dinner, a corporate lunch or a celebration with friends Bank has everything to cater for your needs, It is one hundred percent at the centre of Birminghams nightlife for the young professionals of the city - and people should definitely experience it.

Birmingham’s art scene is both

thriving and full of culture, with the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery providing classical Pre-Raphaelite art, whilst the Ikon Gallery exhibits

the works of outstanding contemporary artists. Birmingham city also boasts a collection of smaller art galleries such as the Three White Walls Gallery situated within the chic

and sophisticated Mailbox. Here customers can browse and purchase the most exquisite contemporary art by artists such as Helen Thorpe and Gail Troth.

AN INTRODUCTION

LUXE|29

Page 30: LUXE magazine

The Ikon gallery contains an outstanding range of contemporary art from sculpture, painting and installation to photography, film and sound. The gallery

was founded as a kiosk inside The Bullring during the 1960s and soon began to gain an exceptional reputation. Due to an outstanding demand it soon became

a gallery of it’s own, which is now situated in Birmingham’s cosmopolitan Brindleyplace.

The Ikon gallery is at the creative heart of Birmingham, and not only has an outstanding collection of contemporary

art, but also hosts exhibitions from influential and inspiring artists including John Salt, Robert Orchardson and currently, Bulgarian contemporary artist Nedko Solakov.

This is Nedko Solakov’s first major exhibition within the United Kingdom, and it features a chronological collection of Solakov’s work, from each year since he became known as an artist during the 1980s, its title – All in Order, with Exceptions, reflecting this. Solakov’s pivotal piece of work became thrust into fame in 1990, entitled Top Secret, and is featured within the exhibition. This piece was created during the height of Bulgaria’s political unrest and contains drawers of files and cards which

depict his shameful secret – which is that he worked with the secret police of Bulgaria during his youth. The piece is almost a form of therapy for the artist, as he’s admitted and unburdened an unwanted secret. The exhibition also contains other famous

work by Solakov, with his 2006 piece Toilets recreated at the Ikon,

which features witty inscriptions from

the artist created simply by using a black marker pen. Recognition was then given to Solakov for his

work a year after he created Toilets; this

was in Venice when he received an “Honourable

Mention to an artist exhibited in the central international exhibition”. Not only are Nedko Solakov’s most famed pieces featured within the exhibition, but a wide range of his drawings, paintings, sculptures, videos and installations are also displayed throughout.
