Tip 1 - Use PLCs and Knowledge Organisers

Break it down into sections

Know your topics - check the syllabus

Revise subjects piece by piece

Have a check list for each topic

Tick off the successes one at a time

Page 12: FCC Revision Plannerfluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/File... · FCC Revision Planner Short term sacrifice for long term gain Year 11 Student Guide Preparation and Exams

Tip 2 - Black Pen and Red Pen

Write a set of bullet points in a black pen, giving everything you know

about the subject you are revising - ie cells

Turn over the information page taken from BBC bite size and read it

through

Then turn it over so you cannot see it

Now write down everything you can remember using the red pen

Forcing yourself to remember

things helps store information

in long term memory

Page 13: FCC Revision Plannerfluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/File... · FCC Revision Planner Short term sacrifice for long term gain Year 11 Student Guide Preparation and Exams

Tip 3 - Thinking maps

Mind map or thinking maps can be useful,

or they can be a waste of time

Just putting words on a page, even if they

look pretty will not help you remember

You need to think about how to organise

knowledge if maps are to help you revise

Page 14: FCC Revision Plannerfluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/File... · FCC Revision Planner Short term sacrifice for long term gain Year 11 Student Guide Preparation and Exams

Tip 4 - Reduce it

Turn your key words into a tweet

Try this for one of the topics you have worked with today

Condense your notes into a set of bullet points

Turn your bullet points into a set of key words

Page 15: FCC Revision Plannerfluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/File... · FCC Revision Planner Short term sacrifice for long term gain Year 11 Student Guide Preparation and Exams

Tip 5 - Hierarchy

Draw out your notes as a pyramid

Put the theme at the top

Write 4-6 key ideas under the main theme

Write other related details under that

5 Theme

Main Ideas

Details

Page 16: FCC Revision Plannerfluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/File... · FCC Revision Planner Short term sacrifice for long term gain Year 11 Student Guide Preparation and Exams

Tip 6 - You will forget - spaced practice

You will forget at least 60% of what you revise

But if you re-revise you will remember more and more

Revising with a little space between each session gives maximum effects

Page 17: FCC Revision Plannerfluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/File... · FCC Revision Planner Short term sacrifice for long term gain Year 11 Student Guide Preparation and Exams

Tip 7 - Flash cards

Flash cards are for testing not summarising

One idea, one flash card

Boost your memory by combining pictures and words

Page 18: FCC Revision Plannerfluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/File... · FCC Revision Planner Short term sacrifice for long term gain Year 11 Student Guide Preparation and Exams

Tip 8 - Memory Journey

1. Pick a familiar location for your

memory journey such as your house

2. Choose objects that are special to you

in some way, the more emotional you

can make things, the more memorable

it will be

3. Draw a line from object to object so you know

what path to take

4. Commit the list to memory by walking through

it in real life or in your mind

The main memory technique that is used by memory champions is

called anchoring

Page 19: FCC Revision Plannerfluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/File... · FCC Revision Planner Short term sacrifice for long term gain Year 11 Student Guide Preparation and Exams

Tip 9 - Exam question and red pen

Regular testing has a powerful positive effect on future retention. If students

are tested on material and successfully recall it, then they have a much better

chance of recalling it in the future, in a mock or real exam for example

The papers will always be structured in the same way, often with different

sections covering different parts of the specification. This ensures that each

paper covers a wide range of topics from across the specification.

Tip 10 - Exam Technique - BUG

Box command word

Underline key words

Glance back

Page 21: FCC Revision Plannerfluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/File... · FCC Revision Planner Short term sacrifice for long term gain Year 11 Student Guide Preparation and Exams

What is the topic on the question?

If stuck...write down something about

the question

Hannah’s sweets…

It is a probability question

Tip 11 - Exam Technique - Spot the topic

Can you ‘predict’ future

questions / topics..?

Page 22: FCC Revision Plannerfluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/File... · FCC Revision Planner Short term sacrifice for long term gain Year 11 Student Guide Preparation and Exams

Writing - hours of handwriting. Neat but also fast.

Like any muscle practice

Make a plan (essay, topic first…)

Answer questions you can do first

Focus (do not waste time - toilet breaks,

day-dreaming)

Keep going - never give up

Tip 12 - Timing

Page 23: FCC Revision Plannerfluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/File... · FCC Revision Planner Short term sacrifice for long term gain Year 11 Student Guide Preparation and Exams

Command words

Command words are the words and phrases used in exams and other

assessment tasks that tell students how they should answer the question

Analyse

Break down the content of a topic, or issue, into its constituent elements in

order to provide an in-depth account and convey an understanding of it

Annotate

Add notation or labelling to a graph, diagram or other drawing

Justify

Support a case with evidence

Suggest

Present a possible case

On the day...

Make sure they get up in plenty of time (preferably after a nice early night).

Encourage them to eat a good breakfast, or take a banana or similar energy giving food with them

to eat before the exam. The brain does not function well on an empty stomach - this is probably

the biggest piece of advice we can give for on the day.

If they are going to be at school all day make sure they have a good lunch and plenty or water, or a

water bottle to fill up.

Help them to try and keep anxieties at bay.

Make sure that they know where they have to be and at what time.

Do they have a pre exam session with their teachers?

Where will it be?

Where should they be before the exam?

Make sure they have all the right equipment with them:

3 good/comfortable black pens, 2 pencils, eraser, ruler, compass, protractor and calculator

(not just for maths).

These must be in a clear pencil case or plastic bag.

Page 26: FCC Revision Plannerfluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/File... · FCC Revision Planner Short term sacrifice for long term gain Year 11 Student Guide Preparation and Exams

7 Ways that Parents can help

1 Have high expectations and provide plenty of support

Both are needed to help your child improve, perform and develop resilience.

2 Help them work smarter

Not all revision techniques are equal.

Spacing out their revision and quizzes are better than cramming and highlighters.

3 Cope well with their setbacks

There will be highs and lows.

How you react to their lows will impact on how many highs they have.

4 Minimise distractions

Provide a revision area with minimum distractions (this includes mobile phones!)

5 Rise and dine

Make sure that they eat breakfast. It plays a big role in concentration and memory.

6 Regular bedtimes and lots of sleep

If they sleep right, they will think right the next day.

7 Avoid cabin fever

Encourage them to get fresh air each and every day.

Hints for Parents from Parents

‘Spend some time helping to create a realistic plan with plenty of breaks. Factor in some time for your child to meet

up with friends for a short while.’

‘Find a place for your child away from their room so that you can keep an eye on how much they are doing. It is too

easy to text or sleep when they should be revising!’

‘Be available and set aside some time to sit with them and help if necessary.’

‘Going through past papers online with your child, is very useful in science and maths. The same questions tend to

turn up again and again.’

‘Keep a good supply of biscuits, healthy drinks and regular food handy.’

‘Be realistic about the amount of time your child needs to revise for i.e. not the bare minimum but not every waking

hour of each day.’

‘Support your child without being overbearing. Do use traditional methods such as having a quiet atmosphere for

study e.g. no TV blaring in the background. Have them study in chunks with breaks and get them to plan their leisure

time and support their leisure time.’

‘Give lots of praise for work done and give special rewards. A treat of some kind for good revision work, but also an

easy-to-apply sanction - such as removing their mobile phone for a number of hours, if not enough revision was being

done.’

‘It is ok occasionally to revise in the company of a friend but be prepared to monitor this. Discussion and sharing

notes can be helpful but endlessly gossiping is not.

‘Most of all stay calm and don’t be panicky.’
