We completed our last year with unprecedented success. I have faith that our organization willcontinue to pursue this long standing tradition of business excellence throughout this comingyear.

Last month, CO FBLA did an outstanding job of representing our state chapter at the NationalLeadership Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. I would like to personally congratulate our 24national finalists, along with all the other NLC attendees.

Their exceptional leadership and professional businesslike demeanor made me proud to befrom Colorado.

The national theme for this year is: FBLA-PBL "Breaking Barriers". And our state theme is:CO FBLA "Breaking Barriers, Moving Mountains".

As we leap forward into our next year in FBLA, we will strive for business excellence and con-tinue to "Break Barriers and Move Mountains"!

As the 2010-2011 State Officer Team, one of our main goals is to increase interactions be-tween Colorado FBLA members and State Officers. It is very important to us that we remainapproachable and accessible to all members. In order to accomplish this goal, we have cre-ated a Colorado FBLA Facebook page where members are encouraged to communicate withus. Our profile will provide connections to news updates throughout the year as well as im-portant, up-to-date information for Colorado FBLA members.

In addition to our Facebook page, weve also created a Formspring account. Formspring is a

new type of social networking site where people can ask users questions without creating aprofile beforehand. The purpose of our Formspring is to give all of our members the oppor-tunity to open up questions for us, whether they are FBLA related or simply to learn moreabout the State Officer team as individuals. We each will answer our own questions person-ally so that the questions are adequately and appropriately answered.

Colorado FBLA is excited and eager to finally be embracing these new social networkinggateways! So give it a shot and give us a shout! Join the Colorado FBLA Facebook page atwww.facebook.com/coloradofbla and follow us on Formspring at www.formspring.me/ ColoradoFBLA today!

Hello, Im Hali Furley and am currently going to be a senior atPlatte Valley High School. Im glad to be elected once again asyour State Vice President Representing District 1 and am lookingforward to meeting new people and bettering Colorado FBLA.

In my free time I enjoy reading, being with my family and spend-ing my time in the business department of my school. Im also in-

volved in other things in my school such as being the Class Repre-sentative in FCCLA, the NHS secretary, and executive vice presi-dent in our FBLA Chapter. After high school I plan to attend col-lege at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln to study BusinessEducation.

Expand FBLA: Up and Coming Middle Levels

Future Business Leaders of America has created an objective to expand

and encourage schools to create a middle level so students are aware of the opportunities and experiences FBLA has to offer. Schools have notbeen able to proceed with this objective because there has not beenenough funding to support the middle level. This could be a great op-portunity for the high school division to help expand and develop themiddle level. This leadership project will help guide the middle levelinto the right path.

There must also be a responsible adviser that will be willing to fosterthe new generation of FBLA. This will give a great advantage to Colo-

rado FBLA in the future National Leadership Conferences, but also forthe students to be better qualified in the business world. Giving the stu-dents the opportunity to attend a Leadership Conference would givethem a taste of what to expect in FBLA. If all goes well, sometime inthe near future there could be leadership conferences being establishedfor the bright students, and potentially state conferences. It is time tobreak the barriers for middle school students to help them move theirown mountains!

Career and Technical Student Organizations is one of the greatest experience an office gets, while further learning how to lead Colorado FBLA we also build the relationships that are soimportant to being such a great officer team. One of the most important things that you learnis how to be the best public speaker you can possibly. Most of the tricks you need to know tospeak are taught by the TRI leadership speakers. Through all the team building activities andexercise on speaking and all aspects of being a leader you learn how to most benefit yourstates organization. The state officer team walked away from this training ready to lead Colo-rado FBLA in the 2010-2011 year.

A baby born too soon and too small is a premature baby, also known as a preemie. Prematurebirth is an escalating crisis in our country. More than half a million babies in the United Statesare affected by this every year. These babies lives vary from living many weeks and evenmonths in the neonatal intensive care unit, or living their life with many complications, thenagain, others are lucky enough to live a healthy life.

One out of every eight babies born is born prematurely. Unfortunately the problem is escalating. The rate of premature births has increased thirty-six percent since the 1980s. Many Americansdont even know that prematureity is a problem. A devastating birth like this can happen at anypoint in time of the pregnancy, for unknown reasons. Doctors are making tremendous steps to-ward caring for preemies, and researching ways to prevent premature birth.

Because of the little amount of education that Americans have of prematurity, the March of Dimes is a nationally renowned profit 501 (3) organization and has committed to a multi-yearnational prematurity research, awareness, and education campaign. The month of November isnow to be recognized as Prematurity Awareness Month. This month of recognition was namedas a national effort to inform America of prematurity and its affects, as well as help fund re-search and families with babies in intensive care.

FBLA is one of many organizations that partner with March of Dimes. Whether its parentalcare, prematurity, or research, FBLA has helped save babies for years. Not only does this part-nership provide benefits for the March of Dimes foundation, but it also serves as a buildingpoint for FBLA members. FBLA members are able to build ties with the community, work to-gether with others toward a specific goal, and develop character.

FBLA, we are the heroes of babies. Please visit the March of Dimes website,www.marchofdimes.com , and take action. Challenge your chapter to become informed and in-form others of March of Dimes. Include March of Dimes activities in your program of work.Together, we can make a difference in babies lives.

Business Achievement Awards (BAA) is a program to help Future Business Leaders of America

develop and strengthen their leadership skills. There are four levels of BAAs: The FutureAwards, The Business Award, The Leader Award and lastly The America Award. Each level fo-cuses on the words of Service, Education, and Progress and has a set amount of required andadditional activities that students must also complete in order to complete the level. The dead-line for submitting BAAs is March 1 st. If members correctly complete all required and addi-tional activities and submit them before March 1 st they will complete the level and receive thepin. Members that complete the America level and attend the National Leadership Conferencethat year will also be recognized with the America ribbon and a certificate of accomplishment.

Business Achievement Awards require students to complete activities that build their leadershipskills. From my experiences of finishing the Future and Business Awards, I have learned timemanagement, patience, persistence, and gained a sense of accomplishment. After completingmy service projects for both levels, I also learned that helping the people around me can providea great sense of pride. Overall, the levels I have completed thus far, have made me not only abetter leader, but a better person in general. I encourage all members of Colorado FBLA to par-ticipate and acquire some of the many rewards FBLA and BAAs offer.

Institute for Leaders, (IFL), began before the National Leadership Conference with about 500members in attendance. This program is designed for the top 1% of members and those in atten-dance are now better business leaders because of their dedication. IFL started off with an intro-duction of speakers which included Ryan Underwood, from TRI, Josh Coleman, who owns atop financing firm, and many other great business leaders of America. IFL then continued with

keynote speaker Patrick Grady who got the audience excited and got members interacting withone another. After, members in attendance, were split into smaller groups and participated innetworking and team building activities to get to know one another on a better level. After theactivities were over, members than split off into the major that they had selected which includedEntrepreneurship, Business Management, Career Success, Officer Trainings, Financing andmany others. Not only did members sit through an intense lesson, they got to meet people fromall over the country and make life lasting friendships. The session ended with the speakersopening up the door for potential careers in each major. At the end of the track, members felt asif they knew enough about certain career paths to know what direction they wanted to take withthe rest of their lives. The second day of IFL was dedicated to teaching members about the mi-nor they had selected. Minors included everything from career planning to etiquette. After themembers had completed their minor they then graduated from IFL and received a pin of rec-ognition along with words of wisdom for each and every speaker. Overall IFL was an experi-ence of a lifetime and although it was intense, every member in attendance is a better leaderwith enough networks to make big things happen.
