Fatigue

• Can you remember the last time you were fatigued?

• How many people in the room are tired now?

• Do you remember a time when you were driving and you find yourself asking yourself. How did I get here so fast, I don’t remember going past ( a certain landmark)

The following video is a reminder of what could happen when we become fatigued and attempt to perform regular

tasks.

• Attempting to work after inadequate sleep ( the duration and the quality of sleep is important)

• Sleeping against the natural biological sleep patterns –Humans are not designed to stay up all night, but have the ability to adapt.

• Duration of Daily duties

• Work load – Too much on our plates?

• Sleep patterns – Are we going to bed when we need to?

• Monotony of the task – doing the same thing day in and day out.

Tips for managing fatigue

Employees and Management should discuss fatigue-related risks in the

workplace and find ways to reduce these risks.

Some simple things you can do at work are:

• vary work tasks so you stay alert

• take regular breaks

• tell your supervisor or manager if you’re feeling fatigued.

Reduce the Risk

Outside of work you can reduce your risk of fatigue by:

• making sleep a priority; avoid cutting back on sleep in order to fit everything

else in.

• improving the quality and quantity of your sleep; have a regular bed time

routine, make sure your bedroom is dark, cool and comfortable; get

treatment for sleep disorders.

• choose what you eat and drink carefully: eat light nutritious meals (heavy

meals make you drowsy); drink plenty of water; minimise your caffeine and

alcohol intake.

• learn the warning signs of fatigue and to recognise them in yourself, so that

you can take a break or have a powernap.
