4FAST LANE BIKER

An old biker rumbles up to a convenience store at about 2:30 in the morning.

He walks by the cashier bitching to himself about get-ting woke up and having to pick up tampons at this God forsaken hour.

The old biker disappears down the center aisle and reappears a few minutes later carrying a bag of cotton balls and a roll of string.

The cashier having heard his grumbling starts to ring him up and says, “I know it’s none of my business, but I overheard you talking about tampons when you came in, they are about half way down isle 2 if you missed them.”

The old biker stares at him a moment and replies, “Well, last week I sent my ol’ lady out for some smokes and she came back with zig zags and tobacco, by God, that bitch can roll her own too.”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~A 5-year-old boy went to visit his grandmother one day.

Playing with his toys in her bedroom while grandma was dusting, he looked up and said, ‘Grandma, how come you don’t have a boyfriend now that Grandpa went to heaven?’

Grandma replied, ‘Honey, my TV is my boyfriend. I can sit in my bedroom and watch it all day long. The religious programs make me feel good and the com-edies make me laugh... I’m happy with my TV as my boyfriend.’

Grandma turned on the TV, and the reception was terrible. She started adjusting the knobs, trying to get the picture in focus. Frustrated, she started hitting the backside of the TV hoping to fix the problem.

The little boy heard the doorbell ring, so he hurried to open the door and there stood Grandma’s minister. The minister said, ‘Hello son, is your Grandma home?’

The little boy replied, ‘Yeah, she’s in the bedroom ban-gin’ her boyfriend.’

The minister fainted.

Well, after having to cancel Bike Night on the 13th because of the rain, Buzzy more than made up for it on the 20th! The forecast said thunderstorms were coming, but it was nothing but blue skies over JJ’s Cycles! There was great live music by Contagious, food, fun, give-aways, and great people. Oh yeah, and LOTS of bikes! The winners of the contests all took home big trophies and big smiles. Tony Tomasinni took Best Antique with his 1946 Flathead. Dennis LaMarsh won Best Modified Stock with his 2007 Soft Tail Custom. Jeff Nellis won Best Custom with his 2009 Fat Bob. And the Peoples Choice went to Mike Arnold with his 1998 Springer. Thanks to everyone that helped make the evening a success and be sure to come out for the next one on September 14th with live music from Bad Karma!

We attended two great events in one weekend where the weather was in our favor. Sunday we met at the Chrome Cafe in Cicero and were greeted by a large crowd all ready to ride on this beautiful day. Chrome Cafe added some things this time around and it made a big difference. They had boot polish and the boys to show you how good it worked, JT’s, the best painter around was showing off his work in addition to a pin striper, tattoo artist, and great food. The business inside and out was brisk. We left the shop by 12:45 and headed out to make the rounds for a return to Chrome Cafe.

Some of the stops put out food for us and it was much appreciated!! This was the first poker run for Jean. John and I counted over 125 bikes! Now that is the way to do it!!! This is just the beginning of what is to come from the shop and we are excited to watch them grow! They treat the customers great and know how to plan for an event like this. There will be more to come from this place so keep your eyes open!! AGAIN, THE PICTURES TELL THE STORY. STAY TUNED.

QUEENSBORO M.C. 2010 RODEO & BIKE SHOWAUGUST 1ST, 2010 . WANTAGH STATE PARK, L.I.

This event has turned into one of the biggest events you just shouldn’t miss. You get to party with one of the oldest clubs in the country who are on the verge of turning 100 years old this fall. They are also some of the nicest, respectable, great bunch of people who have that old school class. You want to look at what a modern club with old school roots and heritage looks like and how they act and behave, turn off those biker movies and shows and come spend a day with the Queensboro M.C.

The day was perfect; as usual it looked like no one missed this event. All of the city and Long Island came out and clubs from farther away than that rolled into Wantagh State Park. They had vendors set up, kid games, tons and tons of food, beer and great tunes to add the soundtrack of the day.

This event is great because of the awesome biker games! Not many clubs or people play biker games anymore and probably don’t remember when they were played but not the crew from Queensboro. I guess being around for 100 years means you have seen and heard a thing or two. Those biker games at the Queensboro Rodeo are spoken about all year long. You have the Port-o- Potty races, the Keg Toss, MC Skills Course, Shoot the Biker Freak, Hot Dog Catch, and Tug–of-War. Just to name a few, they always mix it up and come up with new events to keep people on their toes.

The whole event was a blast! Motorcycles, music, food, beer, biker games, good people and great afternoon…what else could you want? Remember to keep a look out for info on Queensboro M.C.’s 100th Anniversary Party, for more info go to www.queensboromc.com

Once again, the Tack Room Bike Night was a BLAST! It is incredible that the Tack Room keeps packing them in with all the bike nights and other summer events going on. Thank you to the awesome chicks, the unmatchable sounds of Sea Monster, the hot ladies behind the bar, and

the people that keep coming back. It is the great combination of all of the above tha make this bike night an awesome time!

This month, Kim and Vinny did all the cooking, thanks guys! The food, as always, was amaz-ing. With so many nice bikes in the parking lot, choosing trophy winners was no easy task. But, by the end of the night, Richie’s 79 FXE won Best Paint, Best Chrome went to Frank with his spar-kling T/C Fatboy. The 62’ flamed Panhead rode off with Best Custom, and Chulo of Condemned Few M.C. “Hung In” for Best Overall with his un-believably high ape hangers on a 92’ Softail with a very sweet paint job. The Best Represented Club plaque went to the now three time reigning winners... Sovereign Brotherhood M.C. Can they be stopped before November’s last bike night? Stay tuned...

38FAST LANE BIKER

I had the reason to do this article. In part, it was that I needed a mag rebuilt for that BSA project I have been telling you about, plus the fact that I always wanted to see how a mag was made. So, my buddy Mitch and I got in my old hot rod and took a road trip up to see the magneto guru, at MORRIS MAGNETO up in Morristown, NJ. When I first pulled into the place, I have to admit, it didn’t look like much of a manufacturing kind of place. Actually, it really looks like an old time bike shop, which is how the whole thing started, I guess. So anyhow, we go in and meet one of the guys, Jesse, who happens to be the owners son. Then we meet the owner, DAVE SHAW, and we go into the shop to have a look. Let me tell ya, this place is really cool. You would expect a big fancy joint, but what you see and get is a couple of guys that are into what they do, and do it well, in a regular kind of shop. Small, a lot of machines, bikes and magneto parts all around the shop. It was like the old time shops I used to go to when I was a kid. That is what impressed me the most. So, we meet Dave and start to ask questions

about magneto’s and stuff. But the first thing (or one of them) I asked of Dave, is how he got into this.Well the answer was quick--- he got tired of other magneto’s problems and failures, and I guess took matters into his own hands and started to fix all the screw ups. Being that there are only a few companies that make magneto’s, I ain’t gonna put company names here and hang my butt out to dry, but if you have been around this bike thing for a couple of decades or three, you probably know the deal. If you don’t, you ain’t been around long, sorry. So Dave seemed to get a hair up his butt to make a mag that was reliable, not like others of the time. Oh yeah, he started his shop in 1969, if I heard him right. His first mag came out in 1971, give or take, for the iron head sportsters, and his mag had advance and retard, which was something that not many had, if any. Mags of yesteryear, were usually manual advance or fixed advance. The first meaning that you would have to retard the mag by hand, kick your ass off, when it lit off, manually advance the mag and go on your way. The other type was for

GOT SPARK? GET A MAGNETO AND YOU WILL!!

Page 41: Fast Lane Biker - Sept Issue

39 www.fastlanebikerny.com

guys that liked to fly. These mags were set up at full advance right from idle. Henceforth, the flying part. If you did not get the routine correct to start your bike, it could, and would, kick back and shove your knee up around your collar bone, or just shoot you up over the bars, over the seat. Man, I remember that feeling and it ain`t good. So, I got lost there for a second. Dave corrected a lot of those problems by having auto advance and retard on his stuff. But along with that, he corrected a lot of other problems that made other mags unreliable. Gotta bear with me here... While talking to Dave, he was hitting me with so much info, I could not get it in my head fast enough, so Mitch grabbed a piece of paper and wrote down some stuff. What he wrote, I don’t have a clue, but I will do the best I can. There were alignment problems with shafts bonding, rotors binding, small magnets to create spark, machining problems, and more. But Dave found a better way. He put bearings where bushings were. Better machine cuts to keep everything spinning free. He uses magnets that are probably twice as large as the others. Dave stuck one of his magnet assemblies to an arbor press and told me to pull them off with one hand. Let me tell ya, I was surprised how powerful they were. With a magneto, it is all about the magnets and the coil, and how much power is generated by them. Other mags, when you turn them by hand, you can feel the magnets try to stick to each other, making it hart to turn. This also means your engine has to use some power to turn it. Daves mag is set up so when the magnets pass each other, they repell away from each other, needing less force, if any, to make the mag work. I spun one by hand. It was supprisingly smooth. They build all thier mags right there in Morristown. They also do the machining for the cases,

and the cam covers the mag bolts to at the shop. They are all done by hand, and all run and checked out before being shipped. Dave showed us a mag running on one of the test machines. the mag made 20,000 volts at the coil at 350 rpm! From that point, the faster the mag turns, the more voltage at the coil. They said it could get to 40,000 volts or more. They have changed and improved so many things over brand x and y, it was hard to keep track of what Dave was telling us. Proof is, I know the problems I have had with mags on my bikes over the years, and on customers bikes. So you can do like I do. You can send pretty much any magneto, bike wise that is, up to these guys. Trust me, when it comes back, that bad boy will definetly build a fire in your bike. Electronics are ok, but when they quit, you’re done. That is the same with pretty much any ignition. But magneto’s have been around forever. With todays machining, high quality magnets, and materials, think they will outlast most, and look real good doing it. So, Morris Magneto makes mags for any Harley. From Flatheads to Twin Cams, and English bikes. I think if you put Dave to the test, he will fire any bike with one of his mags. So that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. I wish I had more time to spend there to get more info. When I get more time, I will take another ride up, if they aren’t swamped with work. Thanks Dave, for lettin’ me see how it works. I learned a thing or two. that’s always a good thing. So screw all these electronic things that go up in smoke when you need them. Go back to tried and true stuff------magneto (they look killer, too. Better than a bunch of transistors in a module you can’t even see). Give them a call, you might be surprised!!! Gonna have my buddy hold these plug wires while I spin this mag up with a drill... A jump start if you will. See ya at Split Rock......... j.p. fager

WURTSBORO H.O.G. & O’TOOLES HARLEY-DAVIDSON16TH ANNUAL POKER RUN & BIKE RAFFLE TO BENEFIT ST. JUDE CHILDREN’S RESEARCH HOSPITALJULY 25TH, 2010 The 16th year of this event kept up with the tradition of growing bigger year after year. The parking lots at O’Toole’s Harley Davidson were packed with motorcycles, row after row and end to end. People were everywhere, inside and out, taking advantage of the great deals O’Tooles offers while mingling. The day and weather were perfect to say the least and by the look of the crowd and the official head count I took later, I could easily see this was even larger than last year, which is true testament to Wurtsboro H.O.G, O’Tooles Harley and all of you who come out to show your support for and contribute to a great cause… and have fun while doing it! These two organizations have made it their selfless quest to help the children of St. Jude’s, and because of this effort and compassion for others, there are children and parents that are resting a little easier tonight, during an incred-ibly tough time. There is not enough room on this page for me to tell you about all they do for St. Jude’s, Toys for Tots, and so much more. As the old Russian Proverb says.” A man is judged by his deeds, not his words”. That is the type of Club or Dealership I would want to be friends with and do business with. Actually it’s and honor. Remember that the next time a Wurtsboro member is selling tickets for a raffle or event or you need a part for your motorcycle or a new one all together and you’re from their neck of the woods. I was fortunate enough to spend a little time with Dan and Digs from O’Tooles, but they were so busy greeting customers and answer-ing questions about bikes I decided to make my way back to the parts counter where I found Mike and Dan O’Hagan. These two are masters at what they do, and I swear I once saw them guess which part a customer needed just by the expression on his face! I went over to the park and set up my booth near friends from sponsors David Lerner and Associates. We had a good time talking and catching up all day, and by the end of it all I had some good fi-nancial tips and advice from Brian and Chris. You guys think it’s a coin-cidence that I set up next to them every year and get a few free tips. These guys are great and if any one of our readers needs any financial services, look for their card inside the magazine. The day went on with the motorcycle raffle, great food, trophies, a band, free Italian Ice, vendors and it was just a great afternoon to be rid-ing, hanging out, and having a good time, all while helping the St. Jude’s cause. I need to start off by giving a HUGE thanks to everyone that came out to the SWAP MEET FOR THE CURE that took place at Latham Circle Mall, Latham NY on July 10th 2010. Proceeds were donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of New York. We had a very rainy start while setting up, but by 11:00 am the weather broke right on time. The day heated up which brought out the bikes. We had a great crowd.

There was something for everyone at this event. We had face painting and a bounce house for the kids. (Although, it was high jacked by some local hot-ties!) Later in the day the Section 518 boys tore up the asphalt with numerous stunt shows showing off some incredible tricks. Thank you to all the vendors and sponsors for your participation. It was an honor to have you all attend the FIRST ANNUAL SWAP MEET FOR THE CURE. I can only hope to see you all again next year. It was you that made the show!

My favorite part of the event was that the whole day was drama free! There were MC’s from all sides of the spectrum that paid their respects and came out to the show. Never a bad or rotten word was spoken. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Thank you all for your support.

I especially need to thank Fast Lane Biker New York Magazine, Lamination Preservation & Mr. Marine Bike Larry for coming out in the heat. We all had a blast hanging out all day and into the night. Big Frank from Fast Lane, you are the man with the plan! Thanks to you I got the word out to all the readers of your magazine. Thanks again bro. When it was all said and done, a GREAT friendship arose.

Thank you to Dino Petrocelli Photography (518) 785-7656 that took all the shots for the advertising. If you ever need a photographer, he is your man. One of the best I have ever had the pleasure of working with. To Ismile Studios: Bob, Steph and Staff… WOW! I mean, WOW!!! The father’s day photos you took of my daughters were amazing. Then the pictures from the show, edited and printed live on location and shot from a portable green screen were excel-lent! I have to say it one more time, WOW!!!

I would like to say thank you for the use of the bikes in our advertising. Tim from Mohawk Motorsports LLC (518) 883-8785, thank you for the use of the 1996 Harley Davidson Springer Soft Tail and for bringing the fabulous custom built bike, Krystal Method. You and your staff did a phenomenal job. It was an honor to have you at the show. Mr. Bruce Levens, thank you for the use of your super sweet 2007 Iron Horse Texas Chopper (also found on the cover of this months FLB NY.)

Thank you to Jessica, our beautiful model seen in the advertising and also fea-tured as Fast Lane Biker New York’s Babe of the month for August, I love you honey sorry again for all the late nights setting up the event. To see more of Jessica, log on to http://www.modelmayhem.com/1578448.

After the event we rode over to Chico’s BBQ for some great food and music. Thank you Chico for your hospitality. (Why eat a BAD PIG when you can eat at Chico’s and have the Best pig, 518-456-0904) The crowd rocked it with the band Madison late into the night. To book Madison please call (518) 577-7397.

If you missed out this year due to prior engagements or the weather, we look forward to having a bigger and better show next year. Please take a moment and browse through our event photos. See you all next year!

Sincerely, Vic Trippodo, Owner: NYMotorcycleShows.com. Please contact me to help you plan your motorcycle show, rides and charity events. (518) 598-8369

What a great turnout for a first time run! The sun was out to welcome all to the site of Jumping Jacks in East Syracuse the first biker bar of its kind in the area. We all had special stories and a few laughs about Jumping Jacks. Many in the crowd were regulars but a few who weren’t even born yet during its heyday and when we asked them why they were there the reply was that it was such a legend so why not come out!! Mary’s son, the oldest boy was there along with the past mayor of East Syracuse who spoke a few words on the local news channel. We took off from Jacks site to the cemetery to say a short prayer and leave a wreath. From then on we had a great ride .The music was of course by Cousin Jake. The bike show was good and Corney was cooking up a storm. During this day there were a few special things that should be mentioned. The original Jumping Jacks sign was brought out and we all filled the empty spot and had a great picture taken. See Biker Alley for that. Carl had the picture of Mary standing with an officer and was selling copies to go toward next year’s run. Carl had also lined up Mary Foley’s best friend and she gave us some inside stories and pictures and had a few laughs. It was a great touch. Many thanks go out to all involved who helped make this a very special day and we look forward to it again next year. As a foot note to this story we collected a good amount from the sales of tickets purchases and t-shirts that was present-ed to the two business that will make a difference in what they stand for. The Vera House and The East Syracuse Food Pantry received a nice check to be put to good use in Mary’s name. This was an honor and we know we made her proud. Let the pictures tell the rest of this story.
